    Another wonderful helping of illustrator history. Fritz Eichenberg created stunning work. Beautifully crafted. I was especially thrilled to discover him after seeing all the other talented artists in this installment Thank you very much for this enlightening episode.

      Hello and thanks as usual. I hope you'll be pleased to know that I am currently making a video entirely devoted to Eichenberg's wonderful work. Probably be uploaded in a month or two.

    It is difficult to say how effective the quality of your commentaries is Pete. They are so well constructed and delivered that they seem spontaneously communicative (bit pompously expressed on my part, sorry!). Certainly they are always enlightening over the subject matter and open up new views of a familiar world but a world that I wish I had better understood creatively. Totally enjoyable.

      Hello again, and although I do get the occasional hostile comment, in the main I've been delighted by the general level of appreciation viewers have made about the content. But yours is one of the most appreciated of all those I've had. Seriously - thanks a bunch.

    What extraordinary diversity of talent you find and discuss! While once more all four are interesting and entertaining one and all, I picked a favourite in Fritz Eichenberg. Maybe because I love art that I can lose myself in, where there are details to be found that capture and need to be explored. And maybe he wrote delightful rhymes, reminiscent of Dr Seuss. Thank you - watching your videos is relaxing and calming

      Hello again and thanks once more for your commitment to the channel. I'm guessing from your comment that you are unaware (thanks a bunch, youtube) that there is a video on the channel devoted exclusively to Eichenberg's astonishing output. I recommend it but I would, wouldn't I?

    Another brilliant, thought-provoking episode. I hope art history scholars will use the many videos on your channel as springboards for deeper study - especially about artists whose biographies and artworks are not readily accessible.

    You've got to love George Petty and his glorious air-brush created "Petty Girl" pinups. Some of the more provocative ones reminded me of some of the Vargas beauties. Great episode! JJS

      Hi and thanks as usual. You're the second viewer so far to single out Herrick so that makes three of us. It may be because I originally trained as a graphic designer but I've always been a fan of 'unpainted' illustration such as this. And there's plenty more on the way.

    I have watched the entire series. So good, well researched, very interesting and great presentation. Nice to see so many illustrators who I knew nothing about. Thanks Pete, great job. Perhaps you can include an Australian illustrator such as Norman Lindsay?

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there and thanks a lot for watching. The remarkable talent of Norman Lindsay will be featured at some stage sooner rather than later. I'm a great admirer of his work and he's long overdue to appear. There are a couple of other Aussies in the pipeline too - Ida Rentoul Outhwaite and Will Dyson. It has to be said I've struggled to find that many Australian illustrators from that period of time and if you've got any more up your sleeve I'd be glad to know about them. Very nice caricature work by the way.

      Hello again and thanks for your various comments. How I used to love Drucker's film and TV parodies. And Richenberg didnt register at all in Britain so I was previously unaware of him. But I'm confused - what are 'dome artists'?

      Hello Michael and thanks yet again for watching. It was Eichenberg who was the revelation for me. I'm not usually wild about craft-based techniques but somehow his woodcuts really get to me. And watch this space for quite a few more like Herrick.

    Hi Pete.... wow, there are so many artists that I never knew about! Petty's work with the airbrush brought me back to the time that I worked with them. Most all of my work was done in airbrush, though my airbrushes were probably a bit easier to use than the ones Petty had. With today's "digital age of painting", I wonder if actual traditional art is heading in a different direction. Some digital artists can produce amazing pieces, but I wonder if they could do the same traditionally. Thanks for another great video. Looking forward to the next.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello again John. I too used an airbrush throughout the seventies and eighties. And when I got my head around photoshop's airbrush I took the old DeVilbiss out into the garden and flattened it with a hammer. I hated the damn thing. And as for not knowing about these illustrators I did some maths the other day and realised I only knew about 25% of them before I started making the videos. And still so many to go...

    • @johncollado1151
      @johncollado1151 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petebeard That's good, I'm looking forward to seeing more. My flagship airbrush was the Paasche AB turbo.... I really loved that thing. Only problem today, I don't think I could see the needle anymore to adjust it!

  • @davidsparks6146
    @davidsparks6146 ปีที่แล้ว

    George Petty has always been one of my favorite artists. His iconic pinups inspired me to get into Airbrush (more than Vargas who mostly produced watercolor with a touch of airbrushing) Later Dave Willard would become the modern equal to Petty. I just bought a nice hardcover book on Petty and am looking for more. It would be nice to learn where the originals are archived.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again and thanks for your appreciation of Petty. I suspect his originals will mostly be in private ownership so getting a look at them might not be all that easy unfortunately. I used to use an airbrish myself but I must admit when I got to understand photoshop I took the infernal contraption out into the garden and flattened it with a hammer. Happy days...

    Can you do one of your videos, on Frank Bellamy, the Dan Dare and Garth artist? He was very good at dark shadows and highlights, along with expressive hands.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again Gary. Bellamy is another who was born too late to qualify for the unsung heroes strand. But I too am an admirer of his work and if I ever do a video on British comics he'll feature for sure.

  • @blank557

    Mr. Beard, would you please tell me which of your videos were you talk about Caldecott Medal illustrators Robert McCloskey and Robert Lawson? Thanks!

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again and I'm sorry to disappoint you but McCloskey hasnt featured, the reason being that my cut-off point for the Unsung Heroes series is those born between 1850 and 1910. Sadly he wasn't born until 1914, but I've been considering making some videos about those who came a little later if only because it has meant leaving talents such as him alone. Having said that, even with that 60 year window I've still got more to do than I've already done so it might be a while. Better news regarding Lawson, who is feaured in unsung 22. Hope you enjoy it.

    I don't know if you already did, but if you didn't, you maybe should include Elizabeth Brozowska in this series.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and many thanks for the suggestion. I had never previously encountered her work and now I've seen it I'm impressed. Although there are examples of her work there seems to be almost nothing recorded about her at all - as far as I can tell not even her years of birth and death. But judging by the dates of her published work I suspect she would have been born too late for inclusion in the series - the cut off year is 1910. If I can find an excuse to feature her in another context I will so I've bookmarked her. Thanks again.

      Hello and thanks for the appreciation and question. To be honest, until farly recently the vocal track was always dogged with a high pitched electronic noise, which luckily for me, most viewers couldn't hear. And it was masked somewhat by the music track. I was at that time using a cheap (£20 or so) Sennheiser headset, and unless you want similar problems I wouldn't recommend it. I swapped it for a Tonor usb microphone (also cheap but better) and the problem is now fixed. Just make sure you are quite close to the mic or you will get reverb from the room too. And I record into Garageband as I have it for free on my mac. But you can download Audacity for free from the internet and use that. Best of luck with it.

    • @AngloSaxon1

      Sorry about that. And I'm more sorry to say it's not the only one. My hearing is far from great and I struggled for quite a while to get a sound balance. Best I can suggest is if/when you encounter another try turning the sound down or off and using subtitles.
