      He had the misfortune (?) of being taught by Mozart and competing with Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert. Few people remember him today ...

      Hello and my gratitude for your continued support for the channel. Here's a story you might not know about Dorne. Apparently he was in discussion with Andy Warhol (when Warhol was an illustrator) and he asserted pompously that art should be about 'more than mere drawing'. Dorne replied "Pardon me Andy but there's nothing f***ing mere about drawing". Priceless.

      @@petebeard Thank you for that story PB. That really sums up the two schools of thinking I've encountered in my life: the highly conceptual vs the highly practical. I attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (high concept) but my career has entirely been in illustration (storyboards and comics) which is exclusively composed of colleagues who attended the America Academy of Art (high practicality). But I've always leaned towards narrative art.

      Hello and thanks for your appreciation. I think we can all be accused to one extent or another of being more immersed in our own cultural identity, and in that regard it's something I'm trying to remedy. I don't want to create the impression that I already knew about all these illustrators - I haven't done the maths but I'd be surprised if it was more than 50%. It's been an eye opening and humbling experience. Regarding a master list the best I can offer for now is if you go to the channel page and select videos every one of the unsung series lists who's in each instalment. Re: 11:47 Dorne's use of photography. According to Forty Illustrators and How They Work, Dorne worked from a large library (sometimes called a morgue) of reference material. Ever aware of wasted time, Dorne's assistant, after conference, would gather what was needed into a folder for him to use. Only a specific need for photo reference would prompt him to shoot a model or props. He also never employed art specialists (for cars, for example), he painted everything. And he loathed the use of airbrushes.

      My favourite story about him is that he was arguing with Andy Warhol about the nature of illustration when Warhol claimed that "it should be about more than mere drawing". Dorne replied "Pardon me Andy but there's nothing ****ing mere about drawing." Priceless.

    I'm sure this has been commented on before, but is the theme music at the beginning of this series an arrangement of Bowie's Heroes?
    The clue is in the series name yes?

    I'm not sure about models but Albert Dorne was known for having a vast cuttings morgue and employing someone to maintain and update it.
    Ever the perfectionist, I'm inclined to think Mr Dorne would have shot reference for any assignment that required specific poses/costumes. He was particularly known for his multi figure illustrations, compiling those from scrap files I'd have thought would be very time consuming and Dorne was well known for his hard nosed but professional business attitude.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and many thanks for your comment and insight about Dorne's methods. I didn't know about his approach but the cuttings archive makes a lot of sense. It's a source of some frustration to me that biographers rarely get into an illustrator's technical and practical approaches.

    When I was a kid in the '60's I dreamed of getting the Famous Artists School course (thanks to the relentless ads in the comic books!), I even sent in my "Draw This" cartoon character to see if I had "what it took" ... well, of course I did (said the response) and for X amount of $$'s I could enroll ... well, that X amount of $$'s was a deal breaker... *sigh*

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and I too used to study those ads in the back of Superman comics in the early 60s. I must admit I'd have been more impressed if the drawing at the top of the page wasn't so poor. But being British I had no idea what a 'zip code' was so I figured it was for Americans only.

    I hope one day 50 years from now I am posted on some future unsung hero video, LOL. That would be great. I hope I don't have as grisly an end as many artists seem to have though. I will use these videos as learning material of what to watch out for.

    Uhoh, I just upclicked, and it turned to 666. The piano appears to be going through the changes of Body And Soul for the Martin Claus segment. Pete,since these are considered unsung heroes, does that mean you won't do a Robert Riggs episode? I found a good collection of his work in a double issue of Life about New York.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again and thanks for your recent comments. I must admit I had to laugh when I saw that the best selling point about the east coast was that it wasn't as wet as the west. And regarding Robert Riggs you have introduced me to yet another I had no knowledge of, and thanks for that. A casual look shows he was born in the right period to qualify, and if I'd never heard of him then that's unsung enough for me. But I'm hedging my bets because the same casual look suggests perhaps too much of an artist and not enough of an illustrator. But my genuine gratitude to you and I hope a more detailed look proves me wrong.

      Hello and thanks a lot for your suggestions. Bouda has already been featured in unsung heroes 18 and I really admire the work of Adolf Born. Unfortunately he and the others you name were born too late to qualify for inclusion. There's no reason you would know this but when I started I told myself to stop with those born 1910 or before. I had to stop somewhere and as it is I've still got more to do than I've already done.
