    A constant delight as ever. The presentation perfect in every way, with the emphasis solely on the artwork, unlike so many others that are basically glorified selfies. We know, from your bereted self portrait, that you look like the great Ernie Bilko, though you certainly don't sound like him, and that's than enough for us!
    I'm astounded at the number of artists that you've now added to the Song Book: over 240, many of whom I've never heard of. Even more astounded that you haven't mentioned many of my favorites. From the 'Golden Age': Sidney Sime, forever associated with Lord Dunsany, who so loved his work that, for The Book of Wonder, the artwork came first. And Joseph Clement Coll, with his superb illustrations for Conan Doyle and Talbot Mundy. And there were some truly wonderful artists working in the sf/fantasy Pulp magazines: the greatest, undoubtedly, being Virgil Finlay, truly beautiful artwork (much of it done on scraper board), Edd Cartier, whose humourous art adorned many Street & Smith publications, Frank Kelly Freas, and Hannes Bok amongst others. From English comics of the same period two names stand out: the brilliant R.S.(Ron) Embleton and Frank Bellamy. Oh, and I nearly forgot Hal Foster, or is he too well-sung...
    The very best resource for classic illustrator biographies is ~ www.bpib.com/illustra.htm ~ Although not updated for many years, that hardly matters!

      Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of the channel. And regarding the absentees I hope the following goes some way to addressing the list.
      Sime is in the pipeline and will be up in a few unsung instalments time. And the same is true of J C Coll.
      Hal Foster is on the list but it'll be a while before he shows up as I haven't written anything yet.
      Bok has appeared briefly in the origins of fantasy art video, and also in the pipeline as a work in progress as a video subject (possibly in more than one instalment) on the history of pulp in all its forms so Cartier, Virgil Finlay and a lot of others will feature there - if I live long enough.
      There's no reason you would know this but my cutoff d.o.b for unsung heroes is 1910 so Bellamy and Embleton (as with a host of others) were born too late to qualify.
      So thanks for your interest and for sending me the link, although I was aware of it previously.
      I hope you'll continue to watch and if others occur to you please send them along.

    I'm a huge fan of the channel but almost never have something to add because your research is impeccable. As far as Lynd Ward's later life, there's a documentary called "O Brother Man" that his family put out that covers some of that period. The influence of his preacher father, his fight against wealth inequality and poverty and work ethic/pricing. If I remember correctly they talk about him working until he died. I'd definitely recommend watching it if you like his work.
    Your videos have been the highlight of my week for the past year so thank you for all the work you put into these!

    i was really struck by the work of Charles Paine (i think his signature is so cool!) and googled him to see if i could find some prints for sale and there was a listing for him on the Christies Auction site that said he training as a stained glass artist which influenced his design style of bold, structured and high stylized images! in my head his background in stained glass draws a parallel to Henry Clarke!

      Hello to you and thanks for the appreciation of the video. And I know what you mean about the stained glass connection. Another gem in the series. I detect a bit of William Blake in Fidus work, they both have utopian and expansive ideas. And another Howard Pyle student in SS Weber. I think a video about Pyle and all his 'students' who really dominated American illustration would be wonderful. Thanks Pete for all the beautiful artwork and insightful commentary.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Albert. I hope all is well and you're making progress with the e-book. I had thought about the Pyle connection as a subject but decided to feature them individually in the unsung series instead. Still got a couple to go but I think most of the significant ones have been covered. And what I can't get over is how much Fidus was influential on the hippy poster art. And a commune in the 1880s?

    • @albertcscs
      @albertcscs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petebeard Hi Pete, thanks the ebook is moving along nicely. There were many proto-hippie groups in the US in the 19th century, like the Shakers, the Quakers and the Mormons who are still around. Not all practiced nudity and free love, but the communal spirit prevailed. I think in the US we revere the Brandywine school more than you do in the UK. You had the best of the Golden Age illustrators all in London working at the same time. It wasn't until Charles Scribner's Co. started featuring Pyle and his 'students' in their magazines and later the wonderful Illustrated Classics series did the US enjoy quality color illustration. But yes, you have covered them nicely in your series, although I never tire of NC Wyeth and his family.

    I am a huge fan of this channel, I have still a lot to learn about illustration. To get to know who illustrated in the past is fascinating. But it would be interesting to have a website who you can just see the pictures or have a larger archive for only illustratos would be amazing as a rescource for younger illustrators like me and more.There are archives like the webside Simplicisus who preserve the illustrasions of older time like Heinrich Kley(One of the Draftsmen Podcast got me into the channel, so promotion is good). Thank you so much for the research an the love for old illustrators and artists. It would be interesting how you the the resource for the art and artist.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and thanks for your appreciation. Regarding an archive the vast majority of the images I use are downloaded from the internet so if there's a particular illustrator you would like to keep the work of you could do that too. Alternatively take screen shots from the videos -the resolution shouldn't be too bad.

    What a revelation Paine and Ward's work is! Thanks for bringing these hidden gems to light. That such magnificent and brilliant work like theirs and others were so commonplace back then to taken for granted. I believe they would all be hailed with greater praise and fame had they lived today to produce such illustrations that graced everyday publications and ads back then.

      @@petebeard Just throwing in an idea:
      This wonderful series will be around for a long time, no doubt on the digital realm, but you could collate this into a published book series.
      Pretty much all of the content requires repeated viewing, on a tactile printed page, with our fingers seeking out secrets and hidden images. Not the same as zooming in and zooming out on the screen. I admit to saving some screen shots of drawings and paintings for future contemplative and meditative 'walks in the parks and forests'.
      Thank you so much !

      Hello again, and thanks very much for the reply. A few viewers have expressed a similar desire to have a physical book, but the logistics of such a production go way beyond what I'm capable of. I'd need to find a publisher or self publish, and I know from personal experience how hard that can be so I'm sorry to disappoint but I'll be sticking to the digital realm. Other viewers have suggested an e-book and that might be more suitable. But even that will have to wait until I get to the end of the videos, and it looks like that will be some time yet - providing I live that long...

      Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation. I was previously dimly aware of Von Stuck, mostly because of his marvellous head of Christ drawing, but your comment compelled me to check him out in greater detail. The bad news is that it seems he was way more of a painter and graphic artist than he was an illustrator (if at all) and despite the compelling nature of his work I confine myself to those who at least primarily worked as illustrators. Hello and I agree absolutely. The images I found had no titles but all of them including this one are downloadable at decent resolution from a google image search on Fidus or Hugo Hoppener.

    Pete, I really love these videos. I’m so glad you’re still making them after so many videos to your name. Do you think you could make a video about how magazines and posters being printed en mass managed to transfer the hand drawn and hand painted commissions? I have a hard time imagining how they did it without a scanner and jet printer!
    Also if I could make one suggestion, it’s that there is a high pitched beeeeeeeeeeeeeee sound in the background of your wonderful voice overs. If there’s a way to edit it out or prevent it from being recorded, I could play these wonderful videos on my tv and get a better look at the art without hearing the sound very loud on the tv speaker.

      Hello and thanks for the favourable comment. Funnily enough another viewer has expressed similar curiosity about the print process, and here's what I said to him. As far as print in the time of Rockwell is concerned they were all printed by what's called full colour offset lithography. This meant the artist created the picture in the chosen medium, and the image was scanned using a filter system which picked out the indivual colours in dot form. This is known as CMYK. These are transferred (etched) onto zinc or aliminium plates, one for each colour. The four runs then combine to create a faithful halftone representation of the original. There are loads of videos on youtube which show the process in greater detail, and essentially it's the same as current practice. Sorry about the noise. Other viewer feedback indicates it only happens on a few devices/computers and I haven't been able to find out where it comes from. So whatever the cause it isn't there for most viewers and I can't be any more help, I'm very sorry to say.

    Your initial illustrations have an equine theme. What is the origin of this?

      Hello, and thanks for the question. As the series uses the word 'heroes' I thought about the horse and rider as a symbolic evocation of that. In some cases it's not man and horse, as I've used others including bear on a pig and fairy on a grasshopper.

    #61 Pete,
    Your artwork by Fidus might be a bit too titillating for this old man. Pretty risque and seemedly I'd be a poor National Socialist as they seem to have frowned on Fidus's talented work.
    Hope that my pulse rate can get a bit slower and I can get to sleep tonight!
    Another fine episode, JJS

      Hello again and thanks for both your rcent comments - and a welcome bit of humour in these bleak times. Regarding close-ups and zooms thanks for noticing and I include as many as I can but in many cases the resolution of the images isn't up to closer inspection. And vis a vis titilation as a fellow sufferer from advancing years I must say it would take considerably more than Fidus has to offer to send me for a cold shower. Can I recommend my video The Illustrations of Norman Lindsay foe a more robust adult -oriented experience?

      Hi again, and you hit the mark again with Artur Watts - another favourite of mine and your observations about his compositional prowess are spot on. Regarding Peter Max he was born too late to wualify for the series (cut-off year of birth is 1910). But he appears admittedly briefly in my 1960s counterculture video.

    Absolutely awesome videos and research presented here. I really would like to chat with you about making a video segment of an artist in my family who immigrated to the United States from Prussia prior to the Civil War. How does one contact you? His name is Richard Veenfliet. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Veenfliet. I would be happy to help you with some research I have already done. Lack the time and technical knowhow prevents me from giving this artist his due in video form.

      Hello and many thanks for your appreciation of the channel content. I'm sorry that I have to give what Im sure you will find a disappointing response to your suggestion, but I hope you'll accept my reasons. Unfortunately Richard Veenfliet was born before the date I consider the beginning of the unsung heroes series, that being 1850. And I stop at d.o.b 1910. I know this may seem arbitrary but I had to give myself parameters for searching and researching. As it is I'm completely overwhelmed with subjects. And although I'm sure he would make a good subject as a stand-alone feature those are currently reserved for my own personal favourites, and therefore illustrators I'm more than familiar with. That too is a very long list I will probably never get to finish, given my age. I can see from a google search that Veenfliet was an important figure in the development of American illustration, but I was only vaguely aware of him so could hardly rank him as a personal favourite. And I'm sure it's a character flaw of mine but I dont tend to fare well in collaborations. Once again, my apologies.
