Schubert's earlier symphonies are like a clever reworking of themes from Beethoven and Mozart. In this one we hear the 4th mvt theme from Beethoven's Eroica and we also hear a lot of Mozart's techniques---the step by step rising of the string melody with tremolo strings on top, the breaks with woodwinds playing sad descending chromatic harmonies--The grandiose intros with dotted rhythms(Mozart signature as well) In fact this Symphonies intro is very reminiscent of Mozart's 36th symphony intro. But hey---Schubert was only 16 when he composed this---quite an achievement!

We visited the place on the pic when we were on vacation in Rome
Doesn't the first movement secondary theme sound like the basic melody of the 4th movement of the 3rd symphony of Beethoven?
Agreed. (Surely Schubert had heard the Beethoven's 3rd when he began sketching his 1st...)
