    I’ve been using an SM57 for vocals, acoustic guitar and amped guitars. I’ve been thinking about gettin the AT2020 and your video sold me on it. The biggest issue I have with the SM57 is having to significantly increase the gain when recording vocals/acoustic. I noticed you (probably) did too. In your clips both the amp samples and SM57 samples have a noticeable hiss in between the notes. The only one that didn’t was the AT2020. The AT2020 also sounded a lot more balanced. The SM57 definitely captures more low-end (which isn’t really a bad thing!). But Thank you for this video! Very helpful!

    I agree with your thought and also was surprised at the better quality recordings with the dynamic Shure...thanks for the time to go through the experiment and sharing, very well done

    Excellent video. I'm now sold on the AT2020...very quiet, really brings out the best in your Taylor. I also have the Loudbox mini so it will be great to try out the same experiment.

      His g string was raping my ears. What is it with players who never get better after a year? I'm 45 an have a 2 hour warm up to a metronome before I even consider noodling. Discipline guys.
      The sm57 is the classic mic if you are not reamping like normal people.

    Your video is what I was looking for, because I wanted to do a similar setup because I already have an sm57 but I was thinking in buy the at2020 to compliment my recordings. This weekend i will buy my at2020.

    AT2020 seems to capture more guitar sound, was thinking of purchasing of Zoom H2 for the mobility, but now thinking of AT2020 for home recordings. Thx for the review!

    Good compare. Try out the Audio-Technical ATR2100x-USB and see how you feel it compares to the SM57. Both XLR and USB of the ATR2100x-USB are near identical sound based on my tests and sound really good.

    why does the sm57 have a hissing sound in the background?

  • @namede6210
    @namede6210 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Is it possible to not getting the terrible hiss sound with the SM57? The tone itself is not as bad and I do like it, but the hiss is terrible and AT2020 sounded a lot better. I'm actually considering to pick up either the SM57 or AT2020, pairing up with my Scarlett 2i2. Thoughts?

      You could try using an expander plug in on the recorded audio. An expander is the opposite of a compressor and you can use it to make quiet sounds quieter. You'll probably loose the micro-detail along with the noise but you can play with it to get a balance that is acceptable to you.

    Great video! I don't have any of the equipment you used, but for what I heard, I agree with you. Mics are usually better sounding in my opinion, although there are good counter examples. It would be good to see a video with you try to use the taylor system with the eq in the amp to make it sound more like a microphone.
    My guitar has a built-in mic with a control in the preamp that allows me to blend the piezo with the mic, I always try to mix as much mic as I can, it makes the guitar sound a lot more natural.

    How to connect condenser and dynamic microphones at the same time I have phantom but I can chose if the two inputs are phantom or not not separately

    • @pougnetpedals
      @pougnetpedals  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I understand, most newer dynamic mics aren't affected by the phantom power

    How do you record the fishman? DI out XLR to XLR to interface??? If I do that will it work and give me the same sound that comes thru amp?? Thx

  • @gabrielpremont624
    @gabrielpremont624 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man! I'm stuck between the two mikes, but only have the money for one at the moment. I've got the mike that's with the studio pack in the focusrite 2i2 (a large condenser), but it's just really freaking bassy, so I'm looking for something that's got a better accent on mids and highs, and from what I hear, the sm57 seems like the kind of mike I'd want. Could you give me your thoughts? I'd run a dual mike setup using both the condenser and either one I'd pick

    Is it possible that sm57 has more hiss than at2020?

    • @pougnetpedals
      @pougnetpedals  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but I think that is due to the audiobox interface I'm using. The Shure requires more gain then the at2020 and thus you get more noise. I'm thinking of upgrading to one of their new usb Interfaces with better noise suppression and more gain.

    IMO, they both sound horrible on the fingerpicking--way too boomy. It sounds like you placed the mics right in front of the sound hole. It hurts my ears to listen to.
