At first I saw it was a 17 minute comparison video and I was like, “no way I’m watching all of this.” And then I did because it was both highly entertaining *and* informative the whole way through. Pure excellence. Thanks for this one!
This is EXACTLY the video I was looking for, been trying to figure out what to get between the SM57, 58, and AT2020, and this seals the deal for me on the SM57. I believe the tone is going to fit my voice and applications better than others, and the noise rejection is perfect for my intended applications. Thank you for doing the exact things I haven't seen anyone else doing in mic comparisons - throwing them all under a wide variety of conditions on a level playing field, and comparing "budget" mics to a more premium offering. It's nice to see them tested in different rooms with and without treatment instead of just a single treated room under optimal conditions, I was able to get a much better understanding here of how these mics are actually going to sound for me because of it. Also very nice to see the NTG5 in here. It's well beyond my price range, but I appreciate being able to compare the difference in price for sound quality present with that $400 jump.
I almost never reply to videos, especially ones on technical things.. but boy did you make a great, informative and entertaining one! I really enjoyed this, thank you!
Really entertaining and informative, with excellent bonus cat action :) My takeaway is that if you have a low budget and a crappy sounding noisy room, you can't really go wrong with an SM57 with pop/wind shield and a decent pre-amp... it's versatile, built like a tank and I personally like the crunchy peak and the sounds you can get slightly backed off from it or off-axis as it seems to sit well mixed as backing with more close up stuff :) That shotgun mic is special! I like the idea of trying to use one as a sort of "sonic pool cue" to get a really long sound path from a reflected sound in a room to get some spooky action through a compressor :)
I think you were suppose to write a conclusion, Enjoyed your video btw, Question: I want a mic for TH-cam audio and streaming, Is AT2020 a Good Choice? Or any other you would recommend?
I like it, and I see it used here and there by people who have quality audio. I originally got it cause of the quality/price ratio, and it’s not going to be replaced any time soon. I haven’t A B compared it to other mics of similar type, but if I were researching I would find audio I like and then find out what mic is being used... and if I think it’s worth spending the money. There’s a lot of good decent priced mics out there, but it might take time to learn how to best use them.
It's a CAD (EPF-15A)... It works for me, but I actually got it awhile back from this place at my garbage dump where people leave stuff they don't want... The "neck" doesn't always hold up the filter at certain angels so I have to crimp it on itself reducing it to a 7" neck. Just a thing to look out for in pop-filter reviews.
I recorded vocals on SM58 for 5 years in an untreated room....they can be used live in sub-optimal situations. If your close enough to it, it should be fine, but you might need a P-Pop filter, which you could make your own. I was having issues with up close P-losives when testing spoken dialog, but I don't remember if it was an issue with singing.
I am using SM-57 with a Shure A81WS Gray Large Foam Windscreen for a lot of my voiceovers in the past 6 months.... It's very similar to the currently popular SM7B... you just have to talk past it at 45 degree angle and stay fairly close to it. Also, I've been running it through a tube preamp to muddy up some of my mid-range nasal tones and add harmonic texture.
Hi, I have a lexicon alpha audio interface. I don't know whether to buy a shure sm58 or sm57 and use it with the audio interface or buy the At2020 USB. Any recommendation? It is only for recording voices. My interface has no phantom power.
In general the AT2020 will give you better audio. USB might limit its use in some ways like audio interface compatibility/multi-tracking, but it also lets you record anywhere without a field recorder, so I would aim for the best audio for what you need now. Regular USB is going for around the same price as SM58, and USB+ is around $50 more.

Do you think you can use SM57 for VO? I'd like to use it to make dubbing in my native language. And I'm sure it will suit my voice
