I “Switched to Linux” after using MX Linux on a live USB. I used Windows for 25 years and just got fed up with it. I cannot comment on Mint because I have never tried it but what I can say is the MX Linux just works for me. I find it very user friendly.

I believe you recommend it because it's a distro for beginners, I mean very similar to windows. There are so many distros out there that I believe MX wouldn't compare.

    • @lauriehartley9808
      @lauriehartley9808 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Chrob _Home - you are indeed correct it does have a lot of similarities to Windows and while I am not an absolute beginner I would class myself as being at the lower end of the Linux knowledge base. Were MX differs greatly, and why I really like it, is that it takes about a third of the time to boot up and shut down on my Lenovo laptop and I get to decide when and if to install updates.
In the past I have tried Fedora, Mandriva, Puppy, Linux Lite, and several other distros but this is the one I like. In the end I suppose it’s a bit like choosing a car.😉

@@lauriehartley9808 I guess it is like choosing a car. The whole reason for my switch to Linux, was some issues such as privacy, updates which took most of my time. Not to mention with all the bloatware on Windows, it slowed down my IdeaPad and I couldn't really have anything done without waiting. Ever since I made the switch I want nothing to do with Windows, and that would include UI, it's functionality and etc. At first I tried out Kali Linux and to be honest I enjoyed it but later switched to Ubuntu, Elementary, Pop, and "MX😒". Let's just say that I have a deep connection with the granddaddy (Debian). In conclusion I don't want anything similar to Windows cause it'll remind me of the past issues. I'm on Feren and it's her to stay🔥🔥🔥✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿

@Chrob_Home - I am definitely sticking with MX - I have it set up with my favourite packages and Virtual Box running 2 Windows only programmes that I can’t replace. Everything is responsive and working. However -----it just so happens that my wife has just given me her 13 year old Dell XPS laptop. It was top of the range spec when she bought it so -- I’ll give Feren a crack ---- I can afford to break it .😉😉😉

AND, I also mentioned the fact about live MX LINUX changes transferring during install, when you select SAVE LIVE DESKTOP CHANGES. And you can customize your installed system, and then snapshot it as a live CD/USB again.. Kinda like a mirror in a mirror in a mirror.. MX magic..

In Mxlinux i had a sound issue where the sound of say a video or music would play and then at times would stutter but just once. so you heard stuff double. I haven't tried the Linux Mint XFCE Version of Linux mint just the cinnamon and that for me didn't have any issues. Right now im on Manjaro KDE tho.

I used to be a linux mint fanboy. I really liked the way everything worked out of the box. The community had solutions for basically every problem out there and at some point I just got used to linux - after a while I uninstalled every Windows partition I had and only use Linux operation systems ever since (even on my work laptop - which runs tuxedo os, an ubuntu based distro by tuxedo computers). I know how to update my system, I know how to compile from source, I know how to partition my hard drive so that I can easily switch distros without losing my /home folder every time - this is who I am as a linux user right now.
A few months ago I noticed that my old laptop was having a hard time using windows 10 with all the updates and new features that came with it after not using it for basically a year - i.e. online-conference software out of the box, cloud stuff, weather apps, etc. and my laptop was gasping for air. So I searched for a new distro for old laptops that can also be used on new hardware and which is similar to ubuntu/linux mint and I found MX Linux which is also based on Debian, just like Ubuntu. I also wanted to try antiX Linux but did not have the chance yet since MX Linux worked perfectly right away and I could not bring myself to uninstall a perfectly working operating system.
It is super fast, I can use all commands I know from linux mint, except the command-aliases such as "ll" but I now know how to define those myself (and you should learn, too).
A few weeks ago I tried Fedora since I heard it's wonderful but for me it's a bit unstable. I enjoy the stability of my debian based systems such as tuxedo-os (based on ubunut) or mx-linux and so I installed MX Linux on all my other machines.
My bottom line: if you are a beginner you can use either or. Personally after switching to MX Linux I have no ambition to go back to Linux Mint. You have a good documentation and a large community that helps with problems. And you can even use debian / ubuntu based search hits to fix your problems since it's all based on Debian.

There is an option to save all the modifications you made during the live session so that they are kept when you install the system.
The way you installed the latest version of LO is dangerous because you have defined in a permanent way a new source for your packages (buster backports).
The way MX does it through the MX Package Installer is to enable temporarily any source other than the stable branch and then to close that source once you have installed all the packages you wish/need from that source. The MX way prevents you from getting a borked system.
You have forgotten to define a priority through apt pinning for the LO package.
    Cheers

My laptop does not have much power (4GB RAM, dual-core 1.1GHz processor, no dedicated graphics card) so I switched to Linux Mint from windows 10. Mint seemed to run slightly better than Windows 10. Then I switched from Mint to MX Linux and the performance improved dramatically. Everything loaded faster, and I could watch HD videos! Something that as far as I know, was not possible on Mint or Windows. So yep, I'm a MX fan, and I would recommend MX to anyone.

I'm laughing at some of the comments. The only reason to distro hop is because you prefer the philosophy and direction that particular distribution team has or uses. If your hardware isn't working on MX Linux or Mint, change the kernel. Drivers are stored in the kernel, so either you need a newer or previous kernel. @SwitchedtoLinux - Tom I am surprised on your writing computer you are not running LMDE4? It's a work computer, not a daily driver...

Although I don't mind using a terminal now and then, what really impressed me about MX Linux, as well as Linux Mint, is that you can do just about anything you ever need to do without ever opening a terminal. That's the kind of functionality that Windows users thinking about switching to Linux will be looking for. Linux Mint is great, but I really love MX Linux. But for Windows users that know nothing about Linux, Mint is probably the better choice, largely because the package installer on Mint is more like the "Stores" that people are familiar with.

It all depends on your pallette and use. I gave other distros a try (Ubuntu, Mint, etc) on an almost 3 year old laptop with very decent specs, and MXLinux did the trick in terms of speed for an average user.
For those who mentioned Windows, the only thing I miss from MS is Outlook. Till this day I have not found an email client as robust as Outlook (or at least Outlook 2010).

If you love MX Linux, but you really like the Cinnamon Desktop on Mint, don't hesitate to try Cinnamon on MX Linux. That has become my default. Just a few issues. The XFCE Terminal doesn't work in Cinnamon, so I had to grab the Gnome Terminal and set it as the default for programs like HTOP to run, or if I need to open a terminal. Other terminals will work as well, just not XFCE Terminal. Some of the MX Tweaks are disabled when you're not running XFCE, but really no problems that matter. My thoughts about browsers... I've been a Chrome user for many years. When Chrome isn't available, such as on a 32-bit distro, Chromium works exactly the same. Firefox is fine. I just haven't been using it for a number of years.

I have been considering this combination as well - MX Linux with Cinnamon, because Cinnamon is my favourite DE & I just cannot stand XFCE. But does it actually make much sense? The best part of MX is that it's snappy, runs great on older hardware & is low on consuming system resources. XFCE helps a lot on that unlike Cinnamon. Why should I use MX with Cinnamon instead of Mint Cinnamon? This is a question I have repeatedly asked myself. Perhaps you can help me out, given that you have actually used it in a production machine. Also, I would also prefer to remove all traces of XFCE if I use Cinnamon. 1) How do I do that? 2) Is it even recommended? 3) Is MX with Cinnamon just as great as default MX with XFCE? I would really appreciate your detailed thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.

I like both of these distros a lot. With Mint XFCE the desktop works in a traditional way - you can put folders on the actual desktop. In MX-Linux I think you have to work through the files icon on the taskbar which is perfectly fine but different. However, I only used MX-Linux for a day or two so I might have missed something ...

Debian weekly XFCE is better than both of the MX linux and Linux Mint XFCE. Though Debian called it unstable but it is more stable than your imagination. In Linux Mint and XFCE, you will have some extra packages that you will never use. On the other hand, Debian is bloatware free. You can install what you want from the source.

Actually, MX Linux is built on an AntiX Linux/MEPIS base, specifically without systemd. Now, I don't like systemd, philosophically, but in comparison to snaps, I'd rather have that than snapcrap, as it's the lesser of all the evils in the Linux world right now. My favorite desktops are still KDE, Deepin, Cinnamon, XFCE, LXDE/LXQt, in that order. MX Linux, Mint XFCE, and Manjaro default are my 3 favorite XFCE builds. In comparison, everything else kinda sucks. Only ones that come close are Zorin OS Lite and Voyager Linux, but it's still only "meh." I am a man of culture, with standards. We live in a society, after all.

MX Linux for the win. Linux Mint I think is the one that has gone off the deep end by not easily giving a user a CHOICE of using Snaps or not. Sure, you do a easy hack to fix this but Mint (and Switched to Linux) have an agenda against Snaps. MX Linux doesn't block you from installing snaps if you want. Conky Manager that can't be beat, Mint makes it a real pain to install the Conky Manager. Plus the MX control center just runs rings around Linux Mint. The one thing Mint has for it, the color schemes out of the box. And yea, the taskbar on MX is pretty ugly. But with MX Linux, you also get fluxbox if you want to really get lighter. Plus if you need 32 bit, MX Linux got you covered, Mint is phasing it out since they are dependent on Ubuntu.
