Drivers are available in Manjaro settings, you were a bit too fast. I use both of them, Linux mint in the living room on TV for the family and Manjaro cinnamon on my desktop computer. Cinnamon + Nemo are the best combo I have tried. KDE and dolphin are very good too. Sorry to gnome users and nautilus but even Mate or Xfce are more productive IMHO.

As a long time on/off Linux user since the 90's and only going full time about 2 years ago now, all but 1 of my 5 main systems runs Manjaro Mate, as it just feels like going back home, but if Mate was not an option I could for sure make Cinnamon work, same for Budgie(long as the community dev does not drop the ball again, and break all my machines because they forgot to do some simple updates), but pure Gnome I just can't get down with having so much cluttered, and wasted space with toolbars. KDE for me is just too flashy, and resource heavy on some of my older machines, and XFCE while alright, I just spend way too much time ironing out all the little bugs on AMD hardware to get it where I'm happy, with Mate I just copy past a simple terminal script I keep in a Google Docs file if I ever run into things like screen tearing on some older hardware, and I'm mostly golden.

Hey I just watched some of your videos, I just want to know about some secure linux distros to use for a beginner or a new user. And what are your thoughts on PureOS, I know you did a video about it but it was 2 years ago.

    • @reoencarcelado5904
      @reoencarcelado5904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Varun-Gupta:
I dunno what you mean by " "secure" distro" but technically-speaking ALL Linux distros are , because you need " "Root"-user" priviledges to be able to do anything "Administratorly" on your computer.
(What I mean by "Administratorly" is, "anything that would require computer-user--"Administrator"-type--account on a Windows operating-system").
If you don't have this kind of access on your Linux operating-system you cannot do things like "give the computer ", for example.
("Root"-user is the Deepest level of "Administrator" rights on a Linux operating-system. It is the "Créme de la Créme", it is the "Big Cheese", the "Big Kahuna", nobody has more Authorative rights on a Linux computer than the "Root" user).
If you want (and/or are looking) to set-up someone on a Linux computer ("Linux computer" as-in, "a computer that has the-Linux-OS ("the Linux OS" as-in "a Linux distro") installed on it"), I suggest you gear them towards ("gear them towards" as-in "point them towards / install them on / set them up on") a Linux distribution ("Linux distribution" or "Linux distro" is the shortened-slang-term--version for "Linux distribution") called "Zorin OS".
It is as-close-as-humanly-possible as you will get to a Linux-distribution-that-looks-like-Microsoft-Windows on Linux.
In fact, it was made by two people who were trying to get the "feel" of a[/the] Microsoft "Windows" operating-system, on Linux.
It has many customization options [that come inside of it / that come prebuilt into it] so that you can make it look like Windows-XP if you want to, or Windows 98, or Windows Vista/7, or Windows 10 if you want to. Or heck, even MacOS (ie. Macintosh OS).
--> All Linux distros come with a built-in firewall called "I.P.-Tables", that comes with various "front-ends" ("user-interfaces"); one of them is called "U.F.W.", an acronym for "Uncomplicated Firewall". (This is the only one I know about, [but i HAVE-heard that there are other ones,] by the way. That's why I mentioned-it by name).
This one (i.e. "U.F.W.") in-turn comes with a GRAPHICAL--user-interface called "G.U.F.W.", and literally (in the Linux-distros Linux-Mint and Manjaro-Linux it's labeled as "Firewall") all you have to do [to turn it on] is switch the toggle (i.e. the "Slider" switch) to "On" and presto, the Firewall's on. ("On" as-in "Turned On").
And unlike Windows [software-]firewalls (I'm looking at you ZoneAlarm and Comodo Personal Firewall and others), it (i.e. the G.U.F.W. firewall) is-not "constantly-nagging-you" "ooo, you did . Would you like to allow it? Would you like to let it connect to the Internet?", etcetera etcetera.
It seems to automatically-*recognize* when it's been you touching something and when it's been *you* doing something on the computer and when it's NOT-been-you doing something on the computer.
(At-least this has been my Experience so-far, as a Linux newbie, and as a computer-user ever-since Apple Macintosh in 1992 (on Elementary-school computers) and Windows-3.1 (on Middle-school computers) in 1995, by the way).

During your reviews of comments a person asked whether governments know about back doors into Linux you said yes probably. Maybe they do know back doors but the opensource nature and community reliance on the operating system means that they get discovered faster and patched unlike a closed systems. Windows recently had a back door exposed that was unpatched in the operating system for 20 years. How many hackers and governments knew about that back door. But on the other hand every cpu since around 2008 (i think) has a backdoor regardless of OS because of the Intel Management Engine and AMD also has their version of IME. If you want to avoid this I recommend libiquity computers they remove the IME completely and every thing on their system is FSF certified.

Using Manjaro KDE for the last few months as IT student and never had any breaks and stuff. One thing where Manjaro/Arch really stands out for me is the AUR.
If I want to install Sonarr in Ubuntu I first have to add ppa's for Mono, mediainfo and Sonarr. Then I can install it and then I have to create a startup service file for myself.
In Manjaro. I enable the AUR. Search for Sonarr. Press install and everything is done for me.
Its all what you prefer. But can't live without the AUR anymore.

I have no idea if this is an issue with cinnamon's take on mutter but my h264/h265 videos drop frames like heavy on cinnamon manjaro even with all that gstreamer and other multimedia codec. Mint cinnamon and manjaro xfce/kde with the same codecs and mpv config does not experience this issue. The easy workaround for this issue on arch-based cinnamon was to disable interpolation on my mpv config...but I really need that to compete with my chad MPC-HC+MadVR config.

Tho I use Manjaro XFCE, I do not update as soon as they are released. Always read the forum announcement that lets you know how it went and what problems happened. Then how to fix.
Always use Timeshift just to make sure, then update a day or two later. Would never do update while working. I used Mint last year and loved the online accounts feature.
The only problem I've had was my wifi driver. Had it on both systems. AUR fixed the Majaro. Had to manually fix the kernel to get the Mint going. Not difficult, was required a bit more work.
Last month, I was missing Mint and reinstalled it. After 2 days I returned to Manjaro. It was easier for me to customize, snappier on my system, and (for me) the forum was better for researching issues.
For a new user, install, run, and forget...I'd still recommend Mint.

Mint has more third party app support than Manjaro.
      Because Ubuntu is very popular.
As an example, Teamviewer officially doesn't support Archlinux.
But they provide installer for Ubuntu which also works in Mint.
Archlinux has community version of Teamviewer which has a lot of issue.

I had been using Mint cinnamon for years, with great stability, then tried manjaro Kde just for fun..i discovered after trying different Kernels etc.. that the issues i had were KDE related and not problems with Manjaro. so i can honestly say that Manjaro in Cinnamon, or XFCE can be very stable and useable if you know what and when to update. However definately stay clear of KDE if you want stability, I do pound quite hard on distros, so if you only do basic things perhaps your experience will be different.

I wanted Manjaro KDE to work so badly. I spent so much time trying to get it to work. I must have tried installing it a dozen times and I tried installing it several different ways. I tried using different kinds of flash drives, different apps for making the live USB, tried installing to a hard drive, tried installing to thumbdrive (& external HD). I tried it on my desktop, my laptop, my gf's macbook pro, and older laptop...It just doesn't work for me. I had to finally give up. No matter what I did I encountered some sort of issue that prevented me from using it. I also had 3 times the installer froze after about 20 minutes.
I downloaded Manjaro xfce first and that one worked no problem but after using it a few days I started encountering issues, then after I booted to an external drive one day I then couldn't boot back into xfce without having to go through the grub pain in the ass.
Linux mint has always worked for me on any device and it doesn't break. Linux Mint can be used daily for work. I don't want to be a Mint guy but at this point I just have to accept that it makes my life so much easier.

It could be daunting if you don't know anything about computers but if you are willing to learn, it could be a great experience.
Informational: Use DuckduckGo/Google to search for anything you don't know. Use TH-cam for videos on learning too.
      Prepare:
      1. You will need an unused USB flash drive about 4GB or larger.
      2. Know what key to press to get into your Bios and turn off Secure Boot (and turn on UEFI if your Bios supports it but not necessary).
      3. Knowing what key to press to boot from a USB flash drive.
note: for items 2 and 3 you can reference your computer manufacture for that info using Google.
      4. Download Rufis (use a search engine to look it up). This tool is used to burn Linux .ISO to a bootable USB drive (from Windows).
      5. Download Linux Mint Cinnamon from their site. 64 bit unless you have a super old computer that does not support 64bit then 32bit.
      6. Use Rufis to burn that Linux Mint to a USB flash drive.
      7. Swap out your hard drive with your SSD drive
      8. Boot into LM from your USB flash drive. If your computer supports UEFI, choose that otherwise choose Legacy.
      9. Once in LM, Install to the new SSD drive. Just click on all the defaults.
If you are confused by any of the steps above then you are not ready and need to reference what they mean before you start. There's a lot of information readily available out there and if you are interested in learning then it could be a fun experience but if you more interested in just getting a system up and going then I'd suggest you inquire the help from someone that knows about computers.

This is one of the best review/comparison videos I was able to find on TH-cam regarding Mint vs. Manjaro.
As a gamer that's in the process of switching from Win7 to Linux because of a combination of new hardware and Win10/11 having unacceptable levels of bloat & spyware, I value long-term stability and full control over my system. As such, I'm about 65% sold on Mint after watching this video.
That said, I do prefer Manjaro's look and it being based on Arch is rather beneficial in terms of troubleshooting, but if the UX changes every few months... that's just not what I'm looking for (I could ignore updates, ofc... hmm). Perhaps a tad more research is in order before I install both and check how each feels for myself.
    Cheers from Romania.

One thing I didn't consider at the time was the benefit of getting a new ultra-wide monitor, as my setup involves having two graphics cards, with one being passed over to Win7's VM, thus resulting in two video feeds.
You can get FOSS software that switches the feeds fairly seamlessly, but I wanted the ability to display both Windows 7 and Mint simultaneously on the same monitor (3/4 one and 1/4 the other). There are hardware accessories that can allow you to do this, but a good one can cost thousands of EUR and thus I set out to find a monitor that natively supported multiple feed scaling options. This turned out to be a fairly lengthy process, but I eventually found the LG 34WN80C to be well-suited to the task.

I’ve been using Manjaro for about two years. But recently I very very much wanted to switch to mint. Unfortunately, Mint runs much much hotter on my Dell XPS 15 than Manjaro. It would regularly hit the mid 50 degrees Celsius in light work, where Manjaro would do the same tasks at no more than 40-42 degrees. I actually set up a consistent test suite to compare and Mint cinnamon, Mint XFCE, and even Ubuntu 20.04 all showed this excessive temperature characteristics vs. Manjaro. I’d still love to switch to Mint (keeping up with a rolling release is exhausting), but until I solve this issue I will keep rolling with Manjaro (which still rocks).

You should try a newer kernel. LM uses a much older kernel so your hardware may need a newer driver from that newer kernel.

  • @riseabove3082

    1. I have no interest in Snaps or Flatpak so the fact that Manjaro Cinnamon doesn't have that out-of-the-box is a PLUS to me.
    2. Out-of-the box theme in Manjaro is hands down way better looking and more modern than LM. Linux Mint needs to seriously re-consider their dated themes. Although, you could just copy their themes and put them on LM and be perfectly happy.
    3. Manjaro uses a more up-to-date kernel.
    4. Manjaro uses AUR - more software available for the obscure stuff.
My favorite music apps are Spotify, Deadbeef, and Audacious - don't really care for the other ones out there. Wish Deadbeef was packaged but it's an easy appimage to copy over.

      @RockawayCCW:
I see your point, but that is literally one-of-*the-POINTS* of a different desktop-environment. To have a different graphical-[user-]interface of the "Desktop"-environment.
In this case it's like saying, "compare Windows 3.1 to Windows-95-&-98 & XP & Vista-&-7". They are ALL going to have *different* Desktop-environments, aren't they?
(The Desktop-environment in Windows-95 & Windows-98 was the-same but the file-manager was different (in terms of its Graphical-user-interface).
      The Desktop-environment changed in Windows-XP,
      and it CHANGED-*AGAIN* for Windows-Vista,
      and it changed-AGAIN for Windows-8,
      and it *changed-AGAIN* for Windows-10).
The same thing with Linux: the Desktop-environments are all gonna-*be*-"Different".
Gnome is gonna be different from Cinnamon, & each of them are gonna be different from Máte, & each of them are gonna *be*-different from XFCE, & each of those is gonna be different from KDE, & so and so forth.
Every "Desktop"-environment is gonna be different in some way.
(The individual Linux-distro--developer can choose to configure it so that it looks the-same as another Desktop-environment, but all in all, each Desktop-environment is[-]different from all the others).
--> P.S. This information comes AFTER i took the free "Introduction to Linux"-course from The-Linux-Foundation.
      Before-that i was literally_thinking_--the-same-thing-you-were-thinking ("why do we need so many desktop-environments when there's like, at-most, a 1%-difference between them. -emoji." ).

If you have new hardware Manjaro is the way to go. I want to run Debian or fedora, but can’t because of my hardware. The live usb will not boot with anything other than Arch, Opensuse, and Sparky Linux.
I have a RTX270 gpu in my gaming laptop. Also the killer Wi-Fi card in my laptop have issues with the 5.7 kernel. Hence my Arch install is useless now. Only Manjaro support my newish hardware.

Great Video, Manjaro impose all the latest update and Linux Mint 20 based on Ubuntu will probably impose Snapd so I switched from Linux Mint Xfce 18.3 to LMDE4, I installed Xfce4 desktop environnement instead of Cinnamon. LMDE4 because I don't want Snapd imposed by Ubuntu if we install Chromium. I swithed to Linux because I hate Windows 10 automatic update and all scheduled tasks in the background. Snapd check automatically in background 4 times per day for update and will download update for all snapd softwares installed, all silently in background like "Windows" and for me it's more than unacceptable in the Linux world to impose scheduled task and impose snapd if we install Chromium. With LMDE we can install Chromium without Snapd imposed! I'am so happy with LMDE4/Xfce and I hope Debian will never impose Snapd!
