  • Every time I have installed Xfce Debian 11, 12, testing, stable or Sid,
always have problems with Terminal or APT recommending important packages to be uninstalled.
In this video I show you what I mean and hope that someone watching this can give me the answer as to why this is happening?

I have had issues similar with Debian in the past.
I've recently used XFCE in other distros without issue; definitely not a problem with XFCE4.
Have used XFCE for over 2 decades (on and off) with numerous operating systems and distros and have only ever had the problem you discuss with Debian. It actually has something to do with the package management tools and the software database - generally not be updated due to a locking issue preventing it from being properly updated. The problem I've just pointed out may be your problem as well.
Hope you get your stuff right - TC.

Yeah its package dependencies, it really comes down to how the maintainer of the xfce4 package is built, in short if mousepad and whisker are using the same dependency somewhere then yep they will get removed at the same time. You see that part where it says Building dependency tree... that's where it figures out what it will remove...LOL the maintainer may have a reason who knows... I know here at Peppermint we deploy separate packages to avoid that.
Its not the answer you may be looking for but, that's what I found out dealing with the debian stuff .... hope that was helpful 😉

Hello Tommy thank you, yes that has helped. Doesn't do it in any other environment, apart from Xfce. Is there a way I could tell it to keep the other packages, apart from the one I want to uninstall?

@@slim_2280you will see this in other DE as well as other debian an Ubuntu forks. As Tommy days, it is a lazy coding attitude committed by individuals.
Tell me why Ubuntu 24.04 is 5.7gb in size as an iso, with nothing to show for it?
      Lazy code writing perhaps?

I'm not on Peppermint anymore, but on MX Linux Xfce💙

I spent all night getting MX Linux Xfce installed and setup to how I like it, only to switch it on this morning and all the Desktop fonts became unreadable. So back to Linux Mint Xfce I have gone. This was the new MX Linux 23.3 too. Spent two hours searching the web for answers, tried a bunch of stuff and nothing worked to resolve Font situation. Took me half an hour to reinstall and setup Linux Mint back to it's original state. Might have to try an earlier version of MX Linux, one that is proven not to break.

@@slim_2280 Very weird. Never happened to me. I like it that MX uses 10.5 instead of 10 for font size in fonts so the default Noto Sans Regular font is exactly the right size for me.

Hi ya Cyber, Yes in an Ubuntu based system and in Debian 12's Cinnamon and Mate, packages are the right packages to remove, as in the ones not needed anymore. Here in Debian 12 Xfce, it recommends important ones. It's always been like this and have never had it explained as to why?

Hello slim. A suggestion. Install "nala". It is an application that I use all the time. A supplement to 'apt' for want of a better description. It scrutinises the dependencies more thoroughly. It may well negate the issue you are seeing.
Check my last two lxqt videos and earlier ones too where I discuss "nala".
      Be safe...

@@jimacklaw Hello Jim, thank you. Will get watching your videos, as I have a lot to of Linux stuff to catch up on and learn about. Been looking at Nix OS recently, did not think I would get on with it, but miraculously I did. Be doing a video on that soon.
