  • Often autistic kids get diagnosed with social anxiety. This is often an erroneous diagnosis. Here’s why.

There's a theory that Autistics are bombarded by social information and cues and so that's why we struggle - too much input. This make's sense if you think about sensory overload etc. Also that we don't look at faces as much and miss things bc of that. I grew up with extreme abuse so I have both anyway

That's why I feel like I kinda developed it to cancel out the cluelessness of autism but it's so painful in my life. Like I'm not even really aware of social clues because of it, my brain just misinterpretes and overreacts to everything and it's so fricking draining.

What if you are aware of other people's cues but don't know how to do it yourself?

🤔 Tough one, maybe seek a professional diagnosis.

This is me. I just don’t understand how to have a conversation and socially interact properly, but I am very aware of social cues and emotions. So much so that it makes me uncomfortable

YES! I feel so awkward and socially unable. So bad that I don't know where to look or where to keep my hands etc. But I notice every single cue almost better than neurotypicals, which confuses me...@@MxSae

Yep I know its definitely social anxiety for me. I am way to focused on other people's body language and even what they could be thinking.

I don’t enjoy socializing and find it painful to do. Even with people I love. I’m not really so focused on other people as much as I am myself; trying to look engaged, trying to look pleasant and happy, but I want to escape with every fiber of my being. I shut down often and feel like I can’t even get my words out, struggle to keep a back and forth conversation flowing. So exhausting :/

I was diagnosed with level 1 autism when I was 3 or 4. I can socialize normally, I’m very aware of social cues, everyone would praise me and say my social skills were above average, I also never had sensory overload before. I was also born very premature so I was delayed for the first few years of my life. I feel that was confused with autism causing the diagnosis. Currently I don’t identify as having a disability or being autistic, it just feels wrong and ignorant. Can anyone help me? Was I misdiagnosed? (I lost my symptoms around age 6)

I’m quite sure you can have your diagnosis retracted if you feel it doesn’t fit
