    I think the overall story is that this is the second tier ship, with a second tier crew, that tries so hard to become first tier frontier ship. Trying to prove that they are fit to go on away missions and explore.

    Something I thought about that I thought would be interesting would be going into Tendi's Orion heritage. They've never addressed how the Orion Pheromone ability completely works. Can only some do it? Can they control it? Does Tendi have to take meds to keep it under control? If so what happens when they run out? Could they run into some problem that prevents them from replicating it, or have a bunch of stuff destroyed, and now Tendi has to try and do her job as a zombie apocalypse of men are throwing themselves at her? Maybe her problem with wanting to be liked is she's trying to suppress what that ability does so that people like her for her. Feels like there's a lot of things you can do.

      To be fair, just trying to get a job done while men throw themselves at her could be relatable for a lot of women...

    I am a real life New Age spiritual junkie myself and the "ascension" plot really killed me! There are a lot of real life New Age spiritual techniques references. And of course Q and Traveller references, and "Lucy". I love it so much!
    Also, the Picard show also had a Romulan meditation, which is also similar to some sort of real life techniques. I bet these different Trek shows writers did exchange notes. 😂

    The moment when Boimler did the sarcastic Vulcan salute to Mariner was laugh out loud funny, and the ascension was also laugh out loud funny for me, but not in the moment. That bit hit me and made me laugh out loud later in the day while doing the dishes 😆.

      I think that’s generally a sign of a good television show or movie - that you’re left with something to think about and rewatch - I find this show is very rewatchable and I’m finding I appreciate the shows more the more I watch it - it’s very layered - story wise and visually
      I’m finding I’m watching each episode multiple times and finding new things each time I watch it

  • @Gangerworld
    @Gangerworld 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    The consensus seems to be (which I agree this) that this was the least "ha-ha funny" episode and yet it was still a good episode especially in the 2nd half, with some good character story in it.
    I was actually pretty worried in the 1st half but when I found that I had a big goofy smile on my face during the 2nd half I realized ok, this was good. I never laughed out loud but didn't need to.
    Favourite joke: "Executive Poker." Also the Ascension scene was a lot of fun. "THE UNIVERSE EXISTS ON THE BACK OF A GIANT KOALA! WHY IS IT SMILING WHAT DOES IT KNOW???!!!"
    Ransom's *****-filled *****-tanks bit was great.
    Mariner saving the day not because she had some Mary-Sue type knowledge or ability that nobody else does, but because she read the Captain's mission brief was a really nice and smart touch.

      She's in starfleet. She can't just use her orion pheromones to be liked, it would be unprofessional. But i suppose part of her must crave it. Heck, humans crave it, orions just have a shortcut. That she can't use.

    • @kirkdarling4120
      @kirkdarling4120 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@amy27ro Certainly. Having her pheromones surpressed might have been a prerequisite for joining Starfleet. But it's also possible that being an Orion, she's never developed the social skills to be likeable without using pheromones, and so that makes her inordinately anxious about being liked. And so, the sight of an Orion woman clinging desperately to a man's leg is a big WTF moment...that scene should have been the other way around. I don't know if that's something the writers expect us to just "get" as Trek fans, another inside reference, or if they're going to go somewhere with it in later episodes.

    I've got to be honest in that the lack of a "story arc" is a major plus for me in this show. Everything is going to that whole "if you miss one episode your screwed" approach. That just isn't the way I watch television. (The fact that I just turned 50 might have something to do with this.) That format definitely has no place in a half hour animated show. That has been the downfall of Young Justice, in my opinion, for whatever that is worth.

    • @Bastion90
      @Bastion90 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Just turning 30 and I feel the same way. I grew up watching episodic TV, and I much prefer that style. DS9 did an excellent job of having an overall story arc but at the same time keeping the series episodic, but even that would be a bit much for a 20-30 minute animated show. I think it is the right decision for each episode to be a self-contained story and just have the 'arc' based more on character development.

    I felt like they really defined Lower Decks when they “promoted” Mariner. They showed in a parody sort of way how being part of the bridge crew is not where the excitement is but instead it is in the Lower Decks with all their individual concerns of being recognized for their accomplishments or those just taking a laid back approach. It’s awesome to see this humorous side of Trek!

    • @BritneyLaZonga
      @BritneyLaZonga 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For me the interesting thing is, we see other aspects of the daily bridge crew life and get a sense of how it goes when "we don't tune in" so to speak. In the most cases, we only visit the characters when something big is happening (ok, and sometimes, when they are on the holodeck ;)

    I think that you're both perhaps a bit mistaken about the lack of character development for Tendi in this episode. Yes, before this we already knew that she was nieve, eager and wanted to be liked, but she also seemed to be a total pushover. Here, we see some real steal in Tendi's backbone when she's pursuing an important goal ... you know, her desire to be liked. Tendi was so fixated on this that I think that she may need to see the ship's counselor.

    I like how they did something similar to Mariner when they promoted her, as they did with Geordi LaForge in TNG, where Geordi and Mariner both went from those command uniforms to Engineering uniforms. I thought that was a nice touch. The sarcastic Vulcan salute of Mariner's was also amusing. I felt this fourth episode felt the MOST like TNG. Also, Mariner wasn't putting Boimler down, like in all the previous 3 episodes. That's something that, for me, was getting old. I like when the comedy is created from situations, not from making fun at someone else's expense. So, I would say this is my personal favourite episode so far, even if they didn't deal a whole lot with Tendi (who I also want to see more of). They did a wonderful job with the writing and story-telling. More like this please.

    I have to say that this was my favourite episode, _because_ it didn't throw the humour at us constantly. It felt more like a TNG episode with the comedy turned up.
    Also, lots of character development for Mariner - it really shows why she is happy being an ensign, rather than being promoted somewhere she doesn't want to be, and why there's so much friction between her and her mother.
    I agree that we need more character development for Tendi, but it is always a joy to see more of her.

    I have to disagree on not learning enough about Tendi, because in the first episode, all we saw of her was just pure excitement, that she's this capable cool excitable young ensign. There was nothing in those first episodes that said she desired to be liked and that she must be liked, this was a new layer to her introduced in this episode, where we actually see Tendi's excitability as a flaw that leads her into overdoing things simply because she wants people to like her and she can't stand it if people don't. This is an expansion on the character and in fact makes her less one note, it shows her with flaws of her own.

      Yeah, that was my thought about Mariner's promotion as well. She's command division, so she should have stayed in a red uniform. And it should have been a hollow or black second pip, not a gold one. For a show that gets so much minutia correct (more than *I'd* get correct if I were writing the show), that was a strange thing to miss.
      That brings me to my other though: maybe the uniform change and the full bird lieutenant promotion were part of the captain's scheme to really stick it to Mariner. That may have been all part of the plan.

      I guess that was the intention. As a junior lieutenant, she would not be able to attend the senior staff meetings and everything. As the OPS senior officer, she would have to go through crew roster schedule and other managing roles she hates. All part of the punishment.

    Has anyone clicked to the idea that Beckett and Boimler are the 'odd couple'? Their berths on the ship are 'A12001' (Beckett) and 'A12003' (Boimler). The 'even couple' (Tendi and Rutherford) are asssigned to 'A12002' and 'A12004'. This seems kind of fitting to me as Beckett and Boimler are unmatched, or odd, personality types while Tendi and Rutherford seem like very similar, matched or even, personality types.

    Merced (pron. mer-sed) is a fairly boring farm town in the Central Valley. It recently gained a University of California campus, which gives it something. It’s insanely hot in the summer, and has low lying fog in the winter. It can be a bit meth-y in spots. Yeah, that’s Merced. More surprised to see a Tellerite with a name like Durango. And I lost it with the filters in the holodeck.

    I don't know anything about the show's production, but I think it's worth considering that they are showing some of the episodes out of production order. If true, the show may have been built without a season arc so they would have that option. There can be problems with animation delivery, dialog changes, and marketing decisions that could all lead to that sort of scheduling switcheroo (which is very "Star Trek" if you look back on old production stories). I think it's likely that they're watching closely for what works, and I suspect there will be a bit of a cliffhanger or at least a an unanswered question in the last episode, which will lead to more sophisticated story telling. Or maybe they'll stick with slightly random funny, either way works for me. This is a great show. :-)

    I had an issue with this episode: Captain Durango of the Merced is not like any other Tellarite we've seen before in temperament (sure, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as pretty much all Tellarites have had in-your-face-belligerence as their racial Hat, and showing that not all members of a species/culture can be pigeonholed by the stereotypes is a very Star Trek thing to try, even while they blatantly feed the stereotypes of other races). If anything, it seems almost as though he was originally written as a Romulan or Vulcan- both do that quiet seethe and petty one-upmanship.
    And of course, if he was a Tellarite, he wouldn't be insulted by the disrespect Mariner showed (well, not directly. He might see it as an attempt to suck up to a senior officer though), as Tellarites culturally applaud arguments, insults, and blunt honesty.

    Tendi is misunderstood by some fans because they forget she’s an Orion, and their race are often used as slaves and the females are pheromonally seductive to multiple species and often used for pleasure. It’s ironic because she’s an Orion whom very few people show interest, appears to be monogamous, and is enamored with a man that has Vulcan cybernetics with possible mental side-effects that are seemingly Vulcan and Android.
