    I know this likely isn't to be read on a 2 year old video, but, I can say this: This show truly feels like a gift to Trek fans. This show, THIS episode, a friend of mine new to the Trek world laughed so hard, he had to pause and get air...BEFORE he got the all the references! Now, between this, Strange New Worlds and Season 3 of Picard, he gets as excited as I have been for ever new episode! And it isn't just that he likes new Trek, he has been loving the original, TNG, absolutely LOVES DS9, he enjoyed the TNG movies and is loving the new shows. And, it helps that he understands the scientific theory behind the tech, now that he sees the tie in to real life. And this show, as much as I have been loving the darker Trek, is a breath of fresh air, with a hint of its own darkness I am enjoying as well.

    Watching it with my wife, I literally paused it at one point and mentioned how this show is going to probably make fun of a lot of lesser known stuff, and I used cetacean ops as the example, which she had never heard of so I had to elaborate.
    Then I pressed play, and within seconds there was a cetacean ops joke. I couldn't have been happier.

It's still fairly classic Trek paradigm: Main characters facing moral dilemmas while attempting to serve the Federation... only this time, as civilians. It is well grounded in the prior series' ethics.

    I liked this a lot! I only had two minor complaints: [1] At times it felt a bit like a parody. Thankfully, those times were few, but when it happened, it pulled me out of the story. [2] As much as I loved the references, there were a couple of times where they seemed kind of shoehorned in. I’m hoping as the series goes on, it gets better. In spite of those two things, I still enjoyed it a lot, and I’ll definitely be watching the rest of the series.

    Finally someone who enjoyed this show as much as I did. There's so much hate for this show on the internet, it's refreshing to see someone not hating. I mostly agree with everyone not liking what Kutzman is doing with Star Trek. Like using it to rub PC culture in etc. instead of providing entertainment. But this show is exactly the fan service everyone missed and was complaining about in the other shows. It`s fun to watch, has so many little references, stays true to the "old" kind of Star Trek, has the TNG font, the uniforms, the ship design and so much more. It really provides a nice throwback to the good old TNG days. This is easily one of the best Star Trek shows, that has come out lately, too bad all these haters cannot enjoy it. I can't wait to see more of it.

    I was pleasantly surprised by this first episode. The trailer had me a bit worried. I don't know though, it's still got a long distance to go if it's gonna beat The Orville, which has been an absolute delight, going from loving 90s trek homage to a thought-provoking 21st century sci-fi show in its own right. I'm sad to hear the delayed 3rd series is to be its last. Lower Decks has got to be about more than the gags and the nostalgia if it's going to compete in my eyes.

I like the opening with the Romulans fighting the BORG, IF it is tied to Picard and why the cub is in Romulan possession, NO WAY five BORG cubs would have destroyed the Romulan fleet easy, One Borg cub destroyed a Federation Armada. Plus the Romulans lost the Tal Shiar fleet in the failed attack on the Dominion home world, and they took massive loses in the alpha quadrant Dominion war So they would have no real fleet left. The BORG are the Star Trek most dangerous enemy, OK maybe Species 8472.

I liked TOS, TNG, DS9, was so so on Voyager though thought Kate Mulgrew was a great captain, couldn't finish the 1st season of Discovery, like most of Picard, though thought it had a lot of wasted potential and lacked a lot of it's source material (No mention of Lore). I thought this show had great potential and loved the premise of the lower deck crew getting the spotlight for a change. Therefore, I went into this show with a very open mind. Agreed, Mariner surprised me with her complexity. She comes across as a goofball slacker, but scratch that surface and you have the perfect living example of the ideals that Starfleet should uphold - sure, she knows all the rules and regulations inside out, but she's willing to bend them when they don't serve the greater good, she's got her hands dirty and got properly involved, and she's got integrity by the bucketful - check out the way she spoke up to try to get Boimler acknowledged, shortly after he'd told her he was going to report her for breaking regulations! As you can tell, I'm a bit late to these videos, mainly driven by curiosity (no, not the rover) after starting a rewatch of Lower Decks. My main point for this is for Adam. Don't worry mate, I think we can all say that 2020 was the year everyone was doing everything in their pyjamas, or at least the pants. :D
    One thing I will add it that, particular for that subset of the Trek fandom who is also into Dr Who, we have been blessed by our dual nature to accept changes in our favourite shows. If we could not, we would never have made it past our favourite Doctor/companion leaving, making the rest of the last 60 years rather redundant. :D Besides, people swore TNG would never take off, and we all know what happened there. :P

      I'll have to go back to check, but that really was the gag, wasn't it? They just left it with "she went from a jumpsuit...", like there was no second part to it, "she went from a jumpsuit to a [INSERT JOKE]". I'm not sure even what that joke could have been if completed. From a jumpsuit to a uniform was what happened, but that's not a joke. Seriously, if all we're doing is listing a character and remarking on said character's outfit, is this not just super lazy writing?

      Some of us don't want Star Trek to be this frivolous and silly. But I mean, if it has an audience and isn't universally reviled, I guess that's not a bad thing. I feel the way about this show that many felt about ds9 when it came out. I don't care for the tone or content really at all.
      I would have rather had a serious and meaningful show or cartoon depicting the lower deck lives. But this show is what it is. It's just not something I wished or wish it to be.
      It depends on what you want the show to be. It's clearly chosen to be something that not all of us wanted.
      Which is fine. Like ds9 before it, it may have a more limited audience than something like TNG. Time will tell

    I really hope this series has a “couch gag” style opening where one scene (like when the Cerritos backs away from the Borg/Romulan space battle) is different every week.
    I could picture short funny moments like the ship taking out a pylon on DS9, running into the sword of Kahless and having it stick out of it’s hull like a bug getting stuck on the windshield of a car, or having a buggy run over one of those small aliens from the TNG episode Conspiracy... just small Easter eggs in the opening credits each week. Would make 2020 that much less shitty.

    Looks like the premise will be that the bridge crew is largely incompetent and only interested in glory (Very StarTrek like). Ensign Mariner, the protagonist, will work outside the chain of command to ultimately accomplish her objectives as to what she believes is the greater good. Her protege, Ensign Boimier, will come to realize that Star Fleet regulations and protocols are all just a system of control and should be circumvented to achieve one's ends. Ultimately no improvements will be made to the system. How this fits within Roddenberry's vision of the future where the crew works in harmony to help others is unclear.
    Oh come on, this is a comedy! Yes, a lazy comedy. If you are going to create a comedy StarTrek, work within the premise of StarTrek. You can't just put characters in Star Fleet uniforms and put them on a ship and then label it StarTrek.

    • @gildor8866
      @gildor8866 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also my fear that they will make the bridge-crew incompetent so the main characters can save the day. But at least here the bridge crew appeared to handle the crisis on their own and the lower decks were barely involved (the XO should have reported to sickbay immediately upon returning to the ship, but thats the only screw-up)

    • @bomcabedal
      @bomcabedal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously, come on though. It's so obvious that this is intended as a reversal of ST's usual premise of a super-competent bridge crew lording it over regular staff that are borderline mentally deficient.
      Also, there's a good reason Roddenberry got (de facto) kicked off TNG. While he should always be remembered and lauded for creating ST, it's also clear that his vision of the future was quite restrictive to creating drama (and in other ways too, I might add).

    • @jonshellmusic

      @@bomcabedal The majority of StarTrek episodes managed work within the Roddenberry framework and generate plenty of drama. The problem is when you have writers that aren't familiar with StarTrek and are used to creating soap operator level content where the drama is the interpersonal conflict of the characters. That kind of writing is easy.

    • @grokwhy
      @grokwhy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bomcabedal Do you have a specific crew character in mind (other than Barkley) you feel was borderline mentally deficient? The Enterprise was a top choice for assignment and I always had the impression anyone assigned to the Enterprise was the best of those available.
