@@jad4945 I thought I heard Boimler say he was drowned in whale piss but don't remember them ever saying what the 2 talking cetaceans were exactly. They looked dolphin to me though. Maybe whales also live in that water area but we just didn't see them.
This really has been the sexiest season. Even the Cerritos got naked.

Um .... after Discovery and Picard..... I think we all knew we needed it.
But after those disasters I don't think anyone was expecting lower decks to be good.
It's a bit like The Orville, but within canon.

Billups not getting angry until the ship was insulted is a callback to Scotty not getting angry until the Klingon insults the Enterprise in The Trouble with Tribbles.

The nice thing about animation is they've made Starfleet much more diverse, being able to add whatever aliens without breaking the production budget

@@rockdirty2228 Well, technically speaking, ships would still be animation anyway, so I'm not sure it would come under the same bracket as the aliens in star trek are usually not animated, and are usually costumes irl.

It’s genuinely so heartwarming. We’ve heard her hiss like three times and meow once, but I don’t know that we’ve heard her purr before this. Even when she got her box I don’t think we heard her purr like this

Season 3, All-whale ship?
This show is a testament to how seasons with fewer episodes can make for better episodes. This season was all killer no filler.
Discovery could do with a few more episodes to flesh out that crew.
@@wuhteva9805 What I mean is with more episodes their resources would be stretched thinner. A 21 episode season might have 10 good episodes, but they wouldn't be *this* good.
I feel given each is only 20 minutes long they could push the boat out and give us a few more...but can't deny their excellence

I feel like the writers grew up watching and loving Trek and are now binge re-watching it to come up with even more ideas for references...and that's pretty awesome.

I LOVED Captain Gomez. Look at how far she's come. She used to be really nervous about embarassing herself before her superiors, and look at her now. Even in a seemingly hopeless crisis situation she remains calm and collected. When that ensign on the Archimedes bridge tripped and fell, Sonya has nothing but sympathy for her. She remembers exactly how it was for her and is completely supportive. It's great! I also loved the little moment when she rolls up her sleeves and reactivates her old engineering training, trying to bring at least a shuttle back online. The episode shows how much she and her crew are connected. I really, really liked that and I hope we'll see her and the Archimedes again.
It's about 15 years in universe since we saw her last. That's a lot of time for someone to grow.

Bringing in the original actor is so sweet and so loving too. They didn't just want the character, they wanted _her._
She's the captain that you KNOW will be in your corner if you're in the right.
Kayshon being shouted down by the entire crew when he suggested warping around the debris field just slayed me! So funny!
When Boimler recovered from passing out in Cetacean Ops, he mentioned seeing a Koala. Tendi looks nervous after this, I think this is a callback to 1.04 when she witnesses the ascension when the "Ascendee" mentions a Koala (and we see one on screen)
Lower Decks season 2 might be the best Star Trek we've ever had. I absolutely can't wait for the next one!
I’m awake at 12 every week to watch it. They really know Trek and how to write great stories.
I love the visual callback gag that is the Obena-class - its an Excelsior that got refit so many times, that, to quote Captain Freeman: "It came out looking all Sovereign-class".

Lycia Naff, who played Sonya Gomez, also played the lady with 3 boobs in the original Total Recall movie. She later transitioned into journalism and was the one who broke the story about Bill Cosby.

the rubber ducky room is a great reference to the giant rubber ducky on the Enterprise D schematic Okudagram used throughout TNG... good work writers
I Liked from the moment Sean turned to the Downs counter and just said "nah."
It's been really hard to down this show. And perhaps some of our downs were grasping.
@@TrekCulture easily the best Trek. And I like Discovery and Picard. I am just smiling throughout the episodes. They also "feel" like 45 min, while they're half.
The one thing that I noticed with the series Ups and Downs is how much I miss watching Star Trek with someone that loves it as much as I do. I would love to sit with the Trek Culture guys and just binge watch all Trek lol.
I’m starting to think Captain Freeman served aboard the Enterprise D at one point. She knows both Sonya Gomez and Riker from “back then”
It's a theory that Mariner grew up on Enterprise D.

@@weaksignal8009 The timeline on that doesn't add up to me though given that Mariner is supposed to have been in Starfleet for around 10 years, which would mean her career started when the D was still active. Factor in time spent at the academy and there's not much time for her to have been onboard. Just my take

Lower Decks [up until that point] is 2380.
If shes been in Starfleet 10 years, means about 2370. [Though it could mean 10 years + academy, in which case leaving a few years prior. Likely is, given we know she wasn't on the Ent-D during Descent in Late 2369-Early 2370.]
So grew up on Enterprise-D, left it to attend academy, Ent-D destroyed between then and graduation. [2371 destruction].
Then she graduates and serves somewhere during Dominion War. Indications are DS9 or a ship attached to DS9's area.
I don’t know how anyone can say Lower Decks isn’t proper Star Trek. This episode would fit into any Trek show and that ending? Excellent end to the season

I don't like all the slapstick level comedy and I agree with Steve Shives who said "It's fun, but they're trying too hard to be funny"
I must say the second season was a big improvement for me in making it more serious Trek.
The Pakleds could have received the last Klingon bomb and the biggest helmet demanded to see it work. “Red Alarm! Red Alarm!”.

I *love* the reference to the rubber duck... because it actually *shows up* on the original TNG Technical Manual schematics.
The best part about animating Star Trek is that the corridors and interiors on Lower Decks have so much variety and personality. You don't need to keep redressing the same sets over and over hoping no one will notice.

The moment I saw Cetacean Ops I immediately started looking forward to this episode.
I'm sad Lower Decks has finished, but I think I'm even more sad these Ups and Downs have finished, too!

The great thing about Lower Decks is that it loves Star Trek just as much as people like Trek Culture do
Star Trek: Lower Decks is the best Trek in recent production. You can feel the love
and respect the producers have for Star Trek in every episode.
I've got to say Lower Decks is my Favorite Star Trek show, and this second season was awesome.
The only Trek series with a perfect first season follows it up as the only Trek series with a perfect second season.
The rubber ducky room is another reference to the Enterprise-D main systems display. Oh...and my shipping Beckett and Jennifer could happen!

I cant believe season 2 is over already! I need more! I loved seeing Sonya as a captain, that was a great callback.
I think the Pakleds destroyed their own planet. (Also Mariner is totally into Jennifer)
Probably detonated the spare bomb by accident then blamed it on the only Starfleet captain who'd been there (they did, after all, work out that she wasn't Captain Janeway.)

Or the klingons were bored and trapped to packled, playing the victim. Tbh a Undicoverd Country scenario is the most probable, even if it could be a section 31 job, or even a temporal alteration.

I haven't felt so good about a finale and also so depressed that it'll be so long for next season since the Orville season 2 finale. Both these shows have been so great for the 80's and 90's trek fan in me and both had good first seasons followed by incredible follow up seasons
One thing you missed was the heads up display on Ransoms helmet is a call back to Star Trek Into Darkness, when Kirk and Kahn fly through the debris field.
I just noticed how Billups only reacts when his ship is dissed is similar to how Scotty started a fight in K-7 space station when his ship got dissed, (the Tribble episodes TOS & DS9)
This show continues to amaze me, definitely my favorite Star Trek show currently airing.
It really was an excellent episode, and a capstone for a great season. I don't mind the modern live-action shows, but there's so much joy seeing young Lower Decks staff making their way.
Actual character development! So glad this didn't turn into another Rick and Morty.

The Rubber Ducky Room isn't a mystery, it's a feature on the Enterprise D (and so presumbly other Federation ships) as seen in the "The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual"
The Ceritos is so sexy stripped down like that! Magnificent episode I usually wait a few days to watch the ups and downs but came here right away to hear your opinions. So much going on so excited for season 3!
Not only did the explosion look a lot like Praxis, a ship that looked a lot like the Excelsior got caught up in the shock wave.

I have thoroughly enjoyed "Lower Decks"! it is truly a tribute to TNG and Trek Values!
I love Lower Decks so much - easily my favorite modern Trek. I was afraid it would just be a goofy comedy, but it's so much more. The comedy is great, no doubt. But there's so much more depth and story than I expect. Just hate that the seasons are so short!
I don't think they did a good job pitching it to older fans. I was really against it until it proved it wasn't going to be "family guy star trek edition ".

I believe the "Rubber Duckie room" is an Easter egg...on the MSD on the Enterprise-D there is a Classic car, a DC10 airplane, a Flux capacitor...and a rubber duck. All put there as an in-home by the Okudas and set designers.
Tendis comment is a call back to this, and it's a VERY specific joke.
Love this show - best new trek easily. Digging Jennifer’s bespoke space helmet! So much good stuff here :)

Oh Great Bird in the Sky... thank you for recommending the soundtrack. I had no idea that the score was that friggin' epic; it's wonderfully understated throughout the series, but just hearing it on its own... just sweet. By the way, anyone listening to the soundtrack should definitely comment on the bonus tracks- I'm not gonna say more. 😁

There’s a fan theory that Mariner was on the Enterprise based on how a child actress in one scene in TNG had the same haircut as her
How old was that child? Mariner served on DS9.
@@zincwing4475The episode was "When the Bough Breaks." It was Season 1 (2264). She appears to be around 10 or 11. _Lower Decks_ is in the 2280s, so the timing lines up perfectly for Mariner to be in her mid-to-late twenties.

Sometimes I feel animated TV really helps SCI-FI. Its harder to do props and costumes for aliens live-action then animated.
Agreed. If only there wasn't such a stigma about animation being "Just for kids". Animation opens so many doors for things that would be far to expensive or dangerous to do with live action.

The arrest was a surprise but it was still foreshadowed in previous episode. This is great writing.

I felt that Captain Freeman’s comment about Captain Sonia Gomez being “… an old friend …” was representative of how it seems that all Starfleet ship captains seem to be “old friends” or acquaintances.
You know, the show is definitely a comedy, but they also touch on serious issues. In my opinion, Lower Decks is more Star Trek than almost everything else produced this millennium (sorry, Enterprise. I still love you!). I honestly wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I have.
Billups' outburst echoes Scotty starting the fight with the Klingons in "The Trouble with Tribbles" after they badmouthed the Enterprise.
The obena class is now in my top 5 favourite ship designs ever
