    About Us
    We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
    However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
    We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

    HI Guys I just wanted to say how much I have been loving your videos, I have been watching other sailing channels for 10 + years and yours is becoming one of my favourites. It really feels like I an travelling with you, your story telling is brilliant. I also love your play lists as I can click play all and work my way through in order. Orca attacks seems to be a lot more common elsewhere but not here. I've sailed in the Salish Sea here (north of Seattle) with Orca. I've never had any problems or concerns. I've just been happy to have them alongside while under sail. It never even occurred to me that they attack boats until I saw all the videos of attacks in the Atlantic Ocean and elsewhere. Not sure why this is happening but it sounds downright scary. Love your videos. You sure have come a long ways in your sailing abilities! Fun to watch. Happy Holidays you two.

    Just heard that Sir Robin Knox Johnson’s boat was attacked by orcas off the Spanish coast 24th November. Disabled the rudder (which they managed to repair) 😮 On November 24 at 0835 GMT off the Spanish coast of Cape Finisterre (Lat 42 53.6N Long 009 30.3W), a pod of 7-10 Orcas surrounded his Farr 56 sailboat Sanjula and then began to barge into its rudder.
    The orcas butting into the rudder eventually broke a steering connecting rod. The engine was switched off and the boat lay hove-to whilst the emergency steering was rigged. After ten minutes the orcas moved away, no longer finding a hove-to yacht interesting … but that is only an assumption. The boat sailed to Vigo for repairs.

      Paul - you need to know that the orcas are NOT attacking humans. They are going after the rudders on sailboats along the Iberian coastline. The sinkings were the result of damage to the hulls when the orcas pulled off the rudders (somehow). So, fear not! The orcas are still gracious enough to let us humans visit their ocean habitat unmolested... unfortunately, some of them are a little less accepting of our boats. Truth be told, I think they are going to eventually find out that this is a game to the orcas. One or two accidentally discovered a sailboat's rudder was lots of fun to play with, they passed on the word to the rest of the pod, who shared it with another local pod, and now all the orcas are having all the fun with all the rudders. 🙂

    Hello from🇭🇷 As far as I know the life of orcas, they are only looking for food. They are able to attack fish much larger than themselves, so the perfectly rounded hull of the sailboat with the addition of a separate keel and separate rudder looks like a bigger fish with fins to orcas. Fins are the weakest point of all large fish, whales, sharks,... and they attack the fins first to disable the fish from escaping. When they bite into the rudder, they see that it is not really edible and search further. As their natural food is getting less and less, the rudder or narrow keel can easily be fin replaced by a smaller blue whale, a smaller porpoise...
    Happy new year.

    @Teulu Tribe your 1-2 gallons of deisel into the water is negligible. Remember the rule "dilution is the solution". so while you may see the streak initially, it'll go away after a few hours. Besides, it's better than your entire tank, plus whatever spare fuel you have on board, plus whatever other refuse there is: oils, plastics, etc etc.

    I've been following these interactions for 3-4 years across different websites and blogs as I'm thinking of cruising to the Med down the coast of Spain and Portugal. It's more than a single pod behind these encounters as there have been reported interactions off both Galicia and Trafalgar on the same day. It's a learned behaviour that now includes leisure craft. Anecdotally the earliest interactions were with the commercial tuna fisherman perhaps driven by a scarcity of tuna which is the principal food for the orca population in this area. Again anecdotally, the response from some fisherman to orcas taking catches was robust, perhaps encouraging orcas to view all craft with antipathy. I'm not sure how this can be changed now. Either you trade up to a size and build of craft that will be safe in an encounter or you have to rethink your destination. For me, this limits cruising enormously to northern Europe or forcing the significant step of a trans-atlantic. I'm still processing this one.

    • @4kays160
      @4kays160 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The size of a boat weakens its strength to the power of 4, everytime it doubles in length... double the size of your yacht and it can handle 4 times less force in an impact, thats why all the yachts the orcas are sinking are 40ft and above..

      A very specific resident pod in a specific part of the coast near Spain/Portugal/Gibraltar started doing it only a few years ago. The issue is that the orcas that do “attack” appear to be teaching other orcas how to do it. Or at the very least, the young orcas see it as playful fun and imitate it. Nobody quite knows the fundamental reason why they do it or what their motivations might be. But they do know that it only started in this local area about 3 or 4 years ago. And the behaviour is spreading.

It's basically a long stick that holds a shotgun shell usually filled with rock salt or something benign. The concussion effect will scare them away as it's goes off. It works every time. So help me, I can't understand why someone has not built a stainless steel cage around their rudders to protect them from the Orcas, when sailing in that area. You just have to build it to give plenty of room for a 360 degree turning of the rudder or lock-to-lock and too big for the Orcas to bite down on it, you know, kind of like a big bird cage around the rudder.

    Animals as intelligent as Orcas will have individual cultures within their groups, and within their sub species. Most Orca sub types don't eat or attack large animals, living mostly on fish. However, it sounds like this group may well be a type (North Atlantic Type 2) that feeds on marine mammals, and also has a rather delinquent culture. Once the leaders have started targetting rudders, it's lilely they'll pass it on to the juveniles. That means the problem's probably here to stay for many years to come

    This is a controversial subject with a lot of speculation from all sides. I'm not going to weigh in for or on any side but as one apex predator to another. I won't roll over and play dead. I wouldn't do it for a man, a lion or an orca.
    Having said that I see no reason why something bumping into me or my boat would be automatic grounds for a no holds bar brawl. It has more to do with what we both do next that matters. If I go dead in the water and they are happy with just being curious, it won't be my first staring contest. If on the other hand they persist with the aggression then I to am a apex predator with a brain and a fair number of resources at my disposal.
    Just in case anyone wants to argue about the resources. There is one thing that any boat with a radio can generate an very large supply of. Feedback.
    If you can't give every mammal in the area a headache with that then you're doing it wrong. 😂

    Knowing that whales communicate with sound I think the answer will be some sort of sonic device maybe mounted to the inside of the hull that would emit a danger or threatening sound. I'm surprised marine biologists are stumped by this behavior and not aware of a warning/danger sounds that they exhibit in the wild that could be reproduced to scare them away IDK,, but, if it came down to me and my family or the whale - the whale will lose.

    You could have two sticks you stick in the water when they attack, or fix wires permenantly to the rudder ,and just attach the other end to a power source when the Orcas attack.The authorities should be actually setting up some dummy boats to change the behaviour of the Orcas

  • @tomriley5790
    @tomriley5790 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be honest I think it's just another thing to put on the list, I'm pretty sure the boats that sank sank becasue they were flimsy poorly built boats with poorly built rudders. My understanding is that most (if not all) of the boats that have had their rudders attacked have been under engine. Boats that are purely sailing seem to be left alone. When you consider the number of boats going through the waters it's very few that get attacked, unless of course you stay in the area. If it's you obviously it's crap but that's just bad luck, plenty of other things could also mess up your rudder. The best theory is the orca's are basically just having fun and quite impressed that they can make a boat do funny things by messing with their rudders.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      From the Cruising Association data, it seemed 40.2% of boats were just under sails at the time, 26% were motor sailing and 31% motoring, so it’s really split, which was really quite frustrating when weighing up our options 🤣
