I do that sometimes; I think you need to ask yourself why you do that and what you really want. I read an article recently about binge eating disorder-even if you don't have binge eating disorder I think this point is helpful- that when you "want" to eat but you're not hungry YOU don't actually want to eat. just like anger is a response to other emotions and anger itself is not a true feeling (it's often masking sadness, disappointment, loneliness etc.) non physical hunger is all in your mind and is probably a learned response to a stressful situation or a negative emotion such as boredom. I think sometimes we accept that we will always have problems with food or be unhappy due to an underlying belief that we will never quite be good enough. your eating habits don't make you. if you want to have a different relationship with food/eating- you can. Always remember you are worth fighting for and that what you want is within your grasp. good luck(: ( you can consult a GP or therapist as well if needed)- Also it will take time and becoming more aware of your behaviour- this is what I'm trying to do too x again; best of luck
I didn´t know this was a trick made up by another person, because I always do that, when I hesitate to do something. I count to 5 and then I DO IT, no matter what.
I love Mel Robbins and the 5 Second Rule. She talks about how your brain is so comfortable with repudiation that when you want to change an old habit it just takes 5 seconds to do that. Any longer you wait, the harder it will be. Count backwards from 5 to 1 and just DO IT. If you want that bagel for breakfast, count down from 5 and just do it. Don’t talk yourself out of it. Mel also gives the example of hitting the snooze button before getting out of bed. Don’t do it. Count down from 5 and just wake up. Dimish old habits or be stuck in the same cycle. Only you can change. It doesn’t mean your counting all day just do it internally for things that are important to you.
Elena, your channel is the BEST and most informative one i have ever seen in regards to eating disorders and all im going through. I have been watching your videos for the last 4 days since my sister discovered them and I am HOOKED! I strongly believe with all my heart that I can overcome my ED with your help. I am ABUNDANTLY Grateful to you. You deserve to have 1 million subscribers and views for the impeccable content you put out. Thank you!
Thank you, this is the first time I've heard someone speak about this very brief moment of clarity that changes back into the ed ideas. This helps me understand that it can be fought.
But how can this technique be used when your desired behaviour is to do nothing? e.g. I feel I'm on the edge of a binge/purge. I find it hard to not do anything when my brain and nerves are driving me to do something (i.e. overeat).
Your videos helps me a lot. This trick is very good, sometimes I think and I think but it’s always in my head. I want to improve my relationship with food, be positive with myself and live my life for once.
you talk about things that you should do, but what if its something you should avoid? like stuck in that you have to walk a certain rout every day? Should i sit and count down the hole day? :(
I get how this can prompt you to do something i.e go eat the thing you really want to eat, but how can it STOP you from doing something such as compulsive exercise?
Hi Elisa! Could you give an example on how to use this when it comes to exercising in recovery? I haven't had a period in 6 years and know I need to stop exercise (I don't go to the gym or anything, just long walks) in order to help me get that back, but I always fall back into it. How could I use this to help me change this habit?
Hi! what is your ritual before the actual exercise? for example, do you get into exercise clothing before? so maybe you could then catch that moment and count 5 4 3 2 1 and instead get into comfy clothes that are not suited for exercise and continue with whatever else you need to do that day (study, cleaning up, call a friend etc)
Follow the Intuition Yes, that is definitely helpful! I'm not sure that I really have a routine when it comes to it. It is just a habit I don't even think about. I'll just be outside and think, "well I need to go to such and such a place so I'll just walk there". Even if it is quite far. I tell myself it's not really exercise and I'm just doing it because I enjoy it (which I really do!) , but I think sometimes I just do it because I feel I need to be active and moving and as a compensation.
so maybe at first you can just notice these things more and become more aware of what you are doing when you are doing it. so next time it's easier to catch this moment BEFORE you start and rethink it and take a bus. and I can really say from my experience the walking for compensation of calories does NOT make a difference on your body, you won't even lose or "maintain" weight by walking, so its only an illusion, but it DOES effect your mental state by keeping the ED mindset alive. So there is really no point to do it or overdo it. I used to exercise so much, now I only walk sometimes, not big distances or by forcing myself, and there is no difference in terms of my body.
Follow the Intuition Thanks so much Elisa! That is really helpful, and I appreciate you sharing your experience as well. I know for me I walk all the time, and often fear that if I am not constantly moving I will balloon up lol I am eating at or above 3500 calories a day, and worry that if I stop ALL exercise something bad will happen. Even though I know I need to gain some weight, get period back, etc. So you sharing your experience really helps!
I just can't stop eating my favorite foods. I almost eat them till it's hurts. I know I'm not hungry but I still eat. What do I do?
