+TheImpossibleMan My friend who is just now getting into Smash watched this documentary. Knowing nothing about the game going in, he says "Wife makes the documentary". He is the highlight for sure!
+Patrick Reilly That's really what every young person is looking for. Or well.. everybody actually almost: Who am i? What makes me.. myself? Its still strange because their wil alway's be losers and winners. And right now in my life myself, i lost kinda hard in sports while i had the change to be a winner. (Broke my leg and other stuff). So... Whats the point of winning you think Patrick? Whats the point, or rather whats the difference between: A chance for us to be somebody, and a chance to... be?
He really was fantastic. He has an amazing ability to breakdown and analyze people's playstyles and eloquently express all of it. And not just playstyles, he put everything into context and really highlights what makes it significant. Makes me wish Smash had become the giant he wants it to be. Professional gaming has such a hard time blooming simply because there are so many different games and so many different communities. But I would love to see Smash tournaments on the same level as the Dota2 International, with Wife and Prog, etc. doing commentary. JV3X3 would probably be organizing behing the scenes, seems like a very capable dude with an ability to see the big picture.
More than anyone else, Wife seems to really understand the community and the magnitude and depth and significance of everything that's happened over the years.
Holy shit I spent my entire day watching this. It's seriously the best documentary I've ever seen. I'm new in the Melee community (just because my friends really like it) but I really hope to buy another copy to get more practice so that I can go to an event and not get 4 stocked by everyone. :']
if you havent got to that point of playing events yet 2 years later lol. you can always get some practice with melee online atleast lol. the lag compensation is actually pretty decent.
This documentary was amazing... but it also makes me very sad. I missed out on all of this. I didn't even know a community like this existed for most of my life (I'm 20), and I wish I could have been there for most of its existence up to this point. It's 2015 and the number of Apex entrants still looks good, so maybe there's still time for me to give it a shot.
Actually... Smash is bigger than ever right now as I understand it XP I'm new to the community (one of those pesky post-evo suckers) but thing is people like us, who weren't around the first 13 years, we're not late for the party, it just got started!
I feel the same, been smashin with my friends for years since it came out, played hours of 64 and was totally stoked for melee, but had no idea about this whole scene. But Im glad at least i was in a small part of it! Playing smash on 3ds but the lack of matchmaking is outright deplorable.
The Melee scene is bigger now than ever. The S4 scene is also taking off...Apex 2015 at the end of this month will be the largest Melee tournament ever. Get involved and find your local scene...check /r/smashbros/wiki/facebook for a start.
I have only played against level 9 CPU'S so I don't know play styles of true competitive players, but I really want to go to tournaments but they are so far away. But by watching this documentary I feel like I really have to go to a tournament.
It still pisses me off to this day that Sakurai didn't see the beauty in Melee. Even if he just sees it as a party game, he should at least acknowledge how awesome it was that it could be taken to a professional level. Anywho, this documentary is now my favorite. And I've seen A LOT of documentaries.
It's his game and he designed it to be played a certain way. You can disagree with it all you want and play it however you want but in Sakurai's mind, people who play smash bros "competitively" are playing his game wrong.
***** They're sacrificing the competitive scene. Sakurai has said he hates the competitive side to smash. Sm4sh and Brawl were literally designed to not be competitive.
I've now watched this WHOLE documentary 5 times and still find it amazing, and beautiful, and just perfect in every single way. It was never boring at any point and was made flawlessly, and had a beautiful ending
+SMALLSandJOE Just finished my 8th time xD I put this on my secondary monitor every time I practice on dolphin or sometimes when I eat and have nothing else to watch :')
Fantastic Documentary. The production value wasn't all that high, but thats fine. I think it had more than enough heart to fill in all the gaps. One of the best docs i've ever seen! I will definitely be keeping up with the competitive smash community more, and watching more streams! Thanks so much for this!
I'm so thankful that East Point Pictures has taken the time and spent the energy and man hours necessary to tell this beautiful story of friendship, competition, and passion. I agree fully that this documentary really captures the spirit and heart of Smash and its community. In regards to the production value, I am actually pretty impressed. Given the resources and budget available, I think it looks great and flows very well. However, in general I think "lower budgets" are a beautiful part of documentaries. It is a constant reminder that ANYONE can tell a moving story about nearly ANYTHING given a camera and editing tools. The human element is always the centerpiece and driving force in a documentary, whereas that is somewhat less clear in other formats. Long live Smash. :]
When I started the 1st episode of this I was like, "You can't be serious, a whole documentary series on Smash Bros?" I'm incredibly happy to say I loved every minute!!! This is wonderfully well done, and it really made me appreciate Smash Bros. (a game I never liked), but more than that it made me appreciate the people who love it! I applaud everyone involved in making this. Thank you for sharing your passion with the rest of us!
7:15 I laughed my ass off out loud in my living room! Guile's Theme goes with anything, including, apparently, the whole world making Nintendo back down!
I just sat through the entire documentary. So well directed and edited! I remember playing smash melee in recess, we had just half an hour, and a friend of us had melee and 4 controllers 5 minutes away from school, and we would literally run just to play a couple games. that was like 2002-3. Oh man what good memories...
Yeah but I've never would have played that much and so pro, just the usual 4-5 same friends. That pro level is above anything I'd imagined at the moment!
Watching the credits was bittersweet. At 21:22 you can see my name appear. It's weird though to get credit because I don't feel like I did anything. I just made videos because I saw Punch Crew do videos, and it looked fun, so I started doing it. But I never thought those videos would be noteworthy. But people always remind me that they got into smash because of some videos I made. The more I think about it, the more I realize I somehow became a part of something big. I guess wife was right. "It was our chance to be somebody." Even if we didn't try to be.
6:48 even in olden times they said "How can we piss off our community?" Good shit to smashers for shutting down their cease and desist bullshit in the same day same night. You people are fucking beautiful. Amazing piece of history here and I cant wait to run it back.
Amazing research, stock footage, interviews, professionalism. It was all great and the smashers were amazing. All down-to-earth guys. Changed my view on a lot of things and definitely will inspire new-comers like me to do their best, and most importantly, to have fun in this awesome community. 10/10 Makes me feel like I need to pay someone by just watching it.
I only just realized this upon like probably my fourth rewatch, but in the credits, each players tag has a color for their region. Such a little but amazing touch! My favorite part is seeing Chudat go from blue (East coast) to red (west coast) and back to blue again.
SO worth watching all of this, it really was inspiring. Enough for me to want to see this game as MORE than just a game, Prog had it right. it really is just like Jazz.
Alexander Vincent It is Jazz, not so broad as music my friend. Prog explains it well in this video, rewatch Prog and you'll understand that Smash is Jazz :)
Got into the community with this doc, i watched this doc like 20+ times when i was 13, im 20 now and hearing some of the music and hearing these last interviews bring tears to my eyes, even on a small scale (i was never very good) the rivalrys i made and friends i have bonds with because of this game are so precious to me,. Thank you so much samox, you gave me something to be happy about in one of the hardest times of my life, if it were not for you i dont know where or who i would be as a person now, the credits song makes me feel this intense nostalgia i cannot even describe, melee is the most beautiful thing that ever happened to me. I know you’ll probably never see this, but THANK YOU SO MUCH
prob because it had to do with 2 players that no one gave two fucks about lol. also its just an old meme from the late 2000s that has no real relevance to competitive melee so there's that. also incoming 4 year late comment.
Watching this in 2022 makes me feel the same type of way I felt when I watched this back in 2013. Just an incredible documentary. Probably my favourite documentary of all time.
I'm French and I discover what is melee ! This "documentary" is just awesome ;) I wish one day I gonna play smash bros melee with my favorite charachter (Jigglypuff and Fox) ! Sorry I'm not very good in english ! This was 5 hours of pleasure 😍
I expected this documentary to be good, but what I got literally blew me away. This was so beautifully put together, I actually got emotional during some parts like the personalities of Isai and M2K. The game as a whole is incredible and the community is ten times better than that. The fact that this game has given people of so many backgrounds life changing experiences is insane to think about. I don't know anyone in this series yet I feel connected to them now. Truly amazing job in putting this together, I loved it.
As a man in my mid 20's, this documentary series triggers so much nostalgia for the mid 2000s and my own middle school / high school life. Although i only played Melee casually those years, and had never even heard of competitive smash brothers, it reminds me of what was so great about that time. And i grew up in Southern California just hours from guys like Mang0 and the Norwalk crew so i can relate to their lives on some level. Building relationships in my own endevours' be it sports, and music, and school clubs it was similar to the lives these kids lived in their own community of smash. The way this video documentary throws in little clips from the 90s and early 2000s, along with the smash related imagery, makes it easy to connect with for someone my age.
Chillin 2013: "I really like the fact that it really brings together people from every walk of life, really. ... except girls. - We'll work on that too." Chillin 2019: gets engaged to Chelly, a girl Smasher from the UK. Times have changed, and for the better. Another congrats to Chellen!
@@erickfernando18 It attracts men but also turns women away in some respects. Ever been in a CS game and one player speaks and it turns out she's a girl? The entire dynamic is changed for the rest of the match. I've been in one or two games where people just behave normally but I'd have to say it's the minority of the time. Maybe things are different with a game like Smash where you're there in person.
@@UserName-dt3kc For sure, due in large part to what I wrote above. There's no physical/strength discrepancy at play with these huge games (-I understand they can get physical but there are plenty of female elite pianists, violinists etc). Less women play games probably mainly due to public perception of gamers typically being a boys thing. Of course it's been changing recently but I think for any girls that are getting into CS or LoL or whatever and getting harassed constantly, the likelihood of them sticking with it and reaching the top level is low. Combine that with a lower percentage of players and it's no wonder there aren't that many elite female players.
If I could describe Smash in 1 word it's: "Together" Nintendo brought all their best characters together so they could fight Smash brought all our best friends together so we could fight
“Smash brings people together that otherwise would not have been brought together.” This is so true. I have smash nights where anyone who likes the game can come play and have made great friends because of it.
I'm 18 now and I've been playing Melee since I was like 6. Didn't even know the competitive community existed until last year because I never had internet access. I wish I could have been apart of it from the day I got the game.
Drew ZG Same here. I have old replays of me playing Brawl back when I was a casual, I was trash. Now I have been playing competitve smash as whole for the past 2 years, and still have not gone to a tournament...
This was one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time. Did not even know this world existed. What a wonderful ride and the last episodes were hard to take, knowing there were no more. Yet, there are new chapters being created and I do wish I had the time to game competitively to be included in such an amazing group of people. Keep up the good work to everyone involved with this. I will be sharing this with everyone I know.
I love how down to earth pc chris is. He's like everything I wish I was. He lives in the moment, and enjoys life to the fullest. I understand why people would house him in his travels. I would be so down to house him if he came to Vegas for evo next year.
As a competitive smasher, this is amazing to see. I have a lot to relate with M2K in terms of in-game psyche. It's really eye opening to see just how the smash community operates on an in-depth level. I feel like I've just been born again, seeing how the modern competitive SSBM community has "EVOlved".... That finale was a great closure to a great, great series. Amazing. Just amazing. This doc. should be a staple for any new competitive player. Thats EPP. Thanks a lot. I know I speak for Smashers everywhere when I say this: "Thanks."
Incredible was this series, just incredible. It spoke to me on a very deep and emotional level and when I saw the credits roll I was both saddened and elated to have been able to experience this complilation. Thank you very much.
As someone who was part of this community in it's infancy I regret leaving it when I figured it was over. My outmost respect goes to all who stuck with this game through it all. I wasn't ever amazing at this game, but, I loved it and I'm glad it finally got the recognition it deserved.
Watched this close to a decade ago, and realized what I'd missed out on being in the Halo scene. I picked up the game, got destroyed by everyone I knew. My first friendly tournament, I was sent to losers my first game.. and then I beat everyone in losers, and climbed out to grand finals where even though I lost, I couldn't believe what I had done. That was almost a year ago, and I didn't know tech. Last night, I got 100% L cancelling for the first time! Hoping to be one of the best some day.
man, you know i used to be one of those people who hated competitive smash players as I just thought that they all uptight about rules and stages and other stuff of the sort. After watching this amazing series though I now don't only realize just how wrong i was but i have also have gained a crap ton amount of respect for these people and the community as a whole. their devotion and enthusiasm for this simple fighting game meant to be played at a casual level is just awe-inspiring. Now i wish that i was born at least a decade earlier now so that i could have experienced this for myself from the start.
Seen this doc about 7 times makes me sad when it ends 😭 was only 4 when the game came out I'm 23 and still play it such a great game and memories from that time
Glad to see Nintendo is doing that SSB4 tournament at E3 this year, I think they are going to start giving the competitive smashers more support now. Or at least ones who play SSB4
I'm hoping the great players listed in this documentary are invited to the Invitational. To watch them play in a SSB4 tournament for the first time... that would be SO EPIC! I hope they try out new characters like Mega Man and Little Mac. Also, to have great commentators from CLASH tournaments or EVO would be also EPIC.
This is a masterpiece. This documentary is amazing. The ending really touched me and has inspired me to join the competitive scene of smash. You truly are amazing
Imagine the alternate timeline where skullgirls, a game nobody has ever heard of, beat out melee and the scene slowly died out while competitive skullgirls swept the nation lmfao.
The picture of Mango throwing his shirt into the crowd during his pop off to Guile’s Theme is the raddest fucking thing, manly tears of pride were shed.
As a 30 year old dude this makes me happy and sad, Wife said it perfectly, it gave them a chance to be somebody - I've been part of online communities for a long time but never felt like I was somebody, I wish I knew about this community growing up so I could have been a part of it. I'm happy and loved watching this, and seeing the scene in a strong place now, but sad that I wasn't part of it, like really sad. Amazing documentary, so so so well done!

You can still be part of the community If you want 😁
So much respect to all of the creators who worked to create this beautiful docuseries masterpiece! Excellent work editing, interviewing and capturing some truly unique and amazing nostalgic footage. I know everybody who watched feels the same. You all deserve awards for your hard work. Although I was nowhere near a competitive level at Melee it'll always hold a special place in my heart. Sincerely, thank you.
This episode just makes me more proud of being in such an awesome community. I have made many awesome friends and meet many new people after playing SSBM for the first time last year. My dad thinks that when i go to a tournament it's pretty pointless and no one is a friend. But this episode hell this whole documentary just proves that the whole smash community is one big family and i am grateful to be apart of it. I love you all my fellow smashers :,)
The greatest shame is that Ultimate will likely never have this kind of documentary. Ultimate doesn't have the anime plot appeal that Melee had; Ultimate is a mainstream game that still has ongoing support, and it's nothing like the underdog Melee that these scrappy gamers had to pull out of the tar and keep alive with all of their will. There are inspiring moments in the careers of MKLeo, ZeRo and others, sure, but nothing that can compare to the likes of Ken, M2K, Mang0, Leffen, Armada, Hungrybox, PC Chris, Chillindude, and all the others who made this game the legendary icon that it is.
I hope Sakurai has had the opportunity to watch this series just so that he could understand how much his game has had a major influence on so many people from so many different backgrounds. Smash bros is truly a work of art.
What an endearing experience, to my surprise. I didn't cry at all. But it sure hit me hard, now just wanna. Get good, and see how far i can go. But never losing myself, never stop being humble and legit. And also, Don't Get Hit
Spectacular documentary, this is really something special, and I truly appreciate the game even more after learning the stories of these people. Thank you very much to everyone involved creating the film.
Just finished watching the series. Fantastic job. I don't even know what words to use to describe it. Compelling. Emotional. Exciting. All wrapped in a human story of just wanting to play Smash. Excellent doc!
This is a doc for melee cuz it shows there is.literally no other game like melee and its history of competitive gaming. Greatest competitive game there will ever be.
I just wanna say that I seriously don't even know how many times I've finished this whole documentary, but I CAN'T STOP REWATCHING IT. This documentary is nothing short of amazing. East Point Pictures really created a spectacle against all odds. Seriously, there's just no reason for this documentary to be as good as it is considering how much money went into it and how much material there was to work with, but it is AMAZING. Seriously, this documentary was just so well-written and well edited to succinctly tell a fascinating and emotional story. Sure, it could've been better, but maybe if a sequel comes out ten years from now, people will know to donate and the sequel will just blow us out of the water. Until then, I'm going to do my part to keep this game alive so we can have the possibility for a sequel. Thanks to everybody involved with this documentary!
This was just incredible, makes me really wish i'd been a part of it, even though i live in the uk :( i might actually tune in to stream whenever there's an event on in the future, i never knew it was still going strong :)
Just finished rewatching. Time to start again. This documentary needs to be on DVD so I can have it on my tv while I play other games. It has shown me what smash is like and who these legends are and what it's like to enjoy a game again. I know want to be better because of this, so THANK YOU
I really would like to know what Sakurai would say if he saw this (through a translator though I guess because I don't think he speaks English...). Affecting so many lives on this kind of scale really is something very special.
From what I've found. Sakurai knows English, and he basically stalks this community when he isn't working several days at a time on Sm4sh. I think he just is doing the Japanese thing where the most respectful thing is to say nothing at all. But you can see in Sm4sh that he's trying to bridge the gap between competitive and casual. It's evident in the gameplay from Sm4sh trailers already appearing faster than Brawl.
I only played Smash very (very very) casually and never properly understood the beauty and depth of it. This is one of the best gaming documentaries I've seen. Thank you for this, it was beautiful!
ChillinDude was the unsung hero of this doc, he was the gatekeeper to greatness, he was never the one to win these tournaments, but if you beat him it means you're one of the great players.
2021, I just watch this documentary. 2021, I just starting to play Melee hard. 2021, I'm crying when I think of all those magical years that I missed. 2021, Melee is alive, 20 years later. Thank you Melee Community, you are incredible. Continue to be 20 years more please.
What a great, feel-good story. Really felt attached to these guys and their excellent talent at such a niche thing. I grew up with Smash Bros and loved it but never considered just how much of an impact a simple game can have on so many people. It really opened up my eyes to what a creative outlet and an art it is. Hoping it continues into the future and I'll have to check out the tournaments now.
I am a PC gamer, yet I still love playing Smash after all these years. Started with SSB64, Melee, and even Brawl, and now, I enjoy trying to play Melee and Project M at a more serious level. It's a great escape from college drainage.
Thank you so much for making this. It was insanely well done and really expressed how the Smash community sees the game...not just a game, but as a means of expression and personal growth. A sort of extension of their own self, where each individual overcomes bias towards being a Smasher, and a "hardcore" gamer, and pulls through as a community, stronger than ever.
Has anyone noticed that when they show the names of the people interviewed at the end, that he colours of their names represent from what coast they come from lol. Like Chudat's name goes from blue to red to blue again to signify when he was apart of Ken's team.
Just finished the whole doc from front to back for the third time - and the second time this week. Thank you so much for making The Smash Brothers, Samox. It is by far the most moving documentary (series or movie) I’ve ever seen. Thank you for memorializing this exciting time that so many of us didn’t get to experience firsthand.
I loved this so much. It made me feel like a part of the community, even though I never played Melee much at all. Then I get a little sad that I missed out on it all. Such an awesome series. It's too bad I live in Newfoundland, so far away from it all. But I will be throwing smash into my gamecube to relive the memories.
This was my second time watching this doc and speaking as an outsider (I'm a "traditional" FG player), it really was a touching doc. It speaks so much about the community and gave me a new respect for your game and history. The donation drive and EVO2k13 really showed how dedicated your community really is. 12 years later, you showed up in force and brought the hype. Amazing stuff. As for the doc itself, super super high quality stuff guys. Incredible production value, amazing music, editing and story telling. I will be donating to Kickstarter for that upcoming Armada doc. I really feel like I should be paying someone for this. EDIT: also Wife is amazing. Moar Wife interviews!
This documentary really hit me. Getting to know the backstory of everyone who made the game what it is... Getting to know what's in their heads... It gives me hope. I never knew why I was so drawn to melee out of every game I've played, but after watching this I think I finally pinned it down. It's because I love the competition. I love meeting people without the stress of wondering if they'll like me. I get to leave my life behind and become someone totally new when I play and I feel like I finally have a chance to be someone instead of just being a wallflower like usual. Smash gives everyone an equal opportunity and it makes every individual who plays it feel like they mean something. Whether it is in your own play group or the entire world. And that's a good feeling. Especially when you've never felt it anywhere else.
+aestheticstorm that's the big thing I took away from this documentary. these things apply to every competitive community, from Smash to Counter-Strike. Dota to Street Fighter. These sentiments encompass the entire concept of competitive gaming. If you've ever played a game competitively, you'll see the parallels.
Thanks a lot for this documentary. It's shown me the progression of Melee as a competitive game, as well as introducing how the playstyles have transformed and evolved as people competed and learnt different things. Great documentary!
This was an absolutely amazing documentary. The transitions, the humour, the sound bytes, the interviews, all the timing and directing. Absolutely fantastic.
It's probably the first time I watch and watch again and again and again a documentary about video games and cry every god damn time... Thanks for that
Heartfelt, and leaving me with a feeling of sadness to leave this community behind. Thanks for the sneak-peek! Will play Melee with different eyes next time, even if I won't be able to do any of the advanced moves in this series. :)
Wow this is a great documentary, seriously watched it in one sitting and came out knowing so much about a whole community I was absolutely alien to before. Great job
What an amazing documentary. I really appreciate what the people who made this did to make the story of Smash come to life. Just, wow. Smash Bros. has been a part of many of our lives since we were young (I started playing when I was about 4 and am 19 now, still playing with my buddies occasionally). All I can say is it's amazing what this game has done to bring people together throughout the years, and this documentary demonstrates that perfectly.
If this documentary came out in DVD form i would buy it One of the most entertaining things i've watched and its great for non-gamers and gamers to watch.
I think wife summed up the entire gaming community in one sentence "It gave us a chance to be someone" it's so simple yet beautiful in so many ways. Games have defined me as a human being and shaped every aspect of my personality. They let me be who I want to be when I want to be. They let me leave the world and visit a new one oven for a brief moment. Gamers fight all the time but really we are one people all united by the love of games. I'd never change who I was for anything, thank you so much for making this series, it has inspired me to my very core
Wife is awesome, and his candor and professionalism legitimizes this entire documentary series.
Agreed. Wife's commentary and everything was spot on, and honest. He gave this entire series a monster boost in awesomeness.
+aquagrunty101 the way he describes anything in this documentary is really well done
+TheImpossibleMan My friend who is just now getting into Smash watched this documentary. Knowing nothing about the game going in, he says "Wife makes the documentary". He is the highlight for sure!
Wife, is that you?
that man really has a passion for the game he loves.
such a great series enjoyed every bit
wtf dyrus wth are u doing here , this comment is 2 years old .... im glad i was able to scope you out in this list of comments, its crazy!!!
My boy dyrone
Didnt know U Loved Smash!! Now i love you even more!!!!
You still my favorite league player of all time
bet
the part where wife describes all of smash as "a chance for us to be somebody" made me cry a bit. He was so good in this documentary.
wife was amazing is this doc
+Patrick Reilly That's really what every young person is looking for. Or well.. everybody actually almost: Who am i? What makes me.. myself? Its still strange because their wil alway's be losers and winners. And right now in my life myself, i lost kinda hard in sports while i had the change to be a winner. (Broke my leg and other stuff). So... Whats the point of winning you think Patrick? Whats the point, or rather whats the difference between: A chance for us to be somebody, and a chance to... be?
Me too ill gonna buy his book
He really was fantastic. He has an amazing ability to breakdown and analyze people's playstyles and eloquently express all of it. And not just playstyles, he put everything into context and really highlights what makes it significant. Makes me wish Smash had become the giant he wants it to be. Professional gaming has such a hard time blooming simply because there are so many different games and so many different communities. But I would love to see Smash tournaments on the same level as the Dota2 International, with Wife and Prog, etc. doing commentary. JV3X3 would probably be organizing behing the scenes, seems like a very capable dude with an ability to see the big picture.
his book drove me to tears, very well put
More than anyone else, Wife seems to really understand the community and the magnitude and depth and significance of everything that's happened over the years.
Who did a quick re-watch before metagame?
HYPE!
Rewatched 2 episodes a day until today
Had to finish my first watch before metagame of course
Real quick
i'm literally finishing this the minute metagame starts
PC Chris: " I hope I'm still playing when I'm really old... like 35"
Me watching this at 35: "Fuck"
Right in the feels! This documentary was fantastic, probably the most interesting one I've ever watched in my life.
+Nathaniel Bandy I know right?
+Nathaniel Bandy it was amazingly done :)
+Nathaniel Bandy If this is the most interesting documentary you've ever seen you haven't seen many docos.
+Nathaniel Bandy NB watches competitive melee?
+Hugh oh i watched so so many documentaries and this is still one of the best ones.
Hey, now that you are quitting league wouldn't mind some melee content :^)
This documentary was amazing... but it also makes me very sad.
I missed out on all of this.
I didn't even know a community like this existed for most of my life (I'm 20), and I wish I could have been there for most of its existence up to this point. It's 2015 and the number of Apex entrants still looks good, so maybe there's still time for me to give it a shot.
Dude. It's not too late for us! Smash will always be here! Let's kick ass for another 13 years!
Actually... Smash is bigger than ever right now as I understand it XP
I'm new to the community (one of those pesky post-evo suckers) but thing is people like us, who weren't around the first 13 years, we're not late for the party, it just got started!
What this dude said ^
I never played Melee but I watched this entire documentary. It makes me want to be the best I can possibly be... so many feels.
Dude, you should really get into it competitively. I swear you won't regret it!
I started last year when i was 11. Now I'm 12 and woop college kids asses in this game. Its really fun trust me!
You will never regret starting melee, I've only discovered it a year ago and I intend playing it forever.
Randomchallenger fuck man i wish i started when i was that young, now i feel so far behind lmao
I have only played against level 9 CPU'S so I don't know play styles of true competitive players, but I really want to go to tournaments but they are so far away. But by watching this documentary I feel like I really have to go to a tournament.
Anyone else here, years later, binging this amazing documentary once again after countless rewatches?
It still pisses me off to this day that Sakurai didn't see the beauty in Melee. Even if he just sees it as a party game, he should at least acknowledge how awesome it was that it could be taken to a professional level.
Anywho, this documentary is now my favorite. And I've seen A LOT of documentaries.
It's his game and he designed it to be played a certain way. You can disagree with it all you want and play it however you want but in Sakurai's mind, people who play smash bros "competitively" are playing his game wrong.
@@GSync13Do you truly think there’s a “wrong” way to play a game?
I hope Sakurai and the smash dev team see this documentary and realize what they're sacrificing.
Random Man Sacrificing? They're supporting Melee :)
Cedstick No. They definitely are not.
***** Where, when, and by what means?
*****
"When and by what means?"
***** They're sacrificing the competitive scene. Sakurai has said he hates the competitive side to smash. Sm4sh and Brawl were literally designed to not be competitive.
wife is so good at speeches/interviews.
yeah i wonder what he works as. should be like a speech teacher or something lol
@@HKBoba he was a commentator in melee for awhile actually, but i mean prob a speech teacher now or something lol.
@@HKBoba He's a professor in Criminology or something in a University on Baltimore.
I've now watched this WHOLE documentary 5 times and still find it amazing, and beautiful, and just perfect in every single way. It was never boring at any point and was made flawlessly, and had a beautiful ending
;_; Wifes expression
+SMALLSandJOE Just finished my 8th time xD I put this on my secondary monitor every time I practice on dolphin or sometimes when I eat and have nothing else to watch :')
SMALLSandJOE facts cuz
Fantastic Documentary.
The production value wasn't all that high, but thats fine. I think it had more than enough heart to fill in all the gaps. One of the best docs i've ever seen! I will definitely be keeping up with the competitive smash community more, and watching more streams!
Thanks so much for this!
Couldn't agree more. Too bad Sons of Starcraft is nowhere near as good.
I think the production value was pretty good, this could easily be on television.
Download the HD versions of it and you'll see a complete difference.
I feel exactly the same except for what you said about the production value. I was extremely impressed by how well it was put together.
Matt Howard no no noooo.... why did you have to go there? Sons of Starcraft... just... forget that ever happened (or not happened).
When I started the 1st episode of this I was like, "You can't be serious, a whole documentary series on Smash Bros?"
I'm incredibly happy to say I loved every minute!!!
Guile's Theme goes with anything, including, apparently, the whole world making Nintendo back down!
bahahahhaa for real that shit was priceless
My sides were dead after that part, the power of the smash community is real!! XD
I just sat through the entire documentary. So well directed and edited! I remember playing smash melee in recess, we had just half an hour, and a friend of us had melee and 4 controllers 5 minutes away from school, and we would literally run just to play a couple games. that was like 2002-3. Oh man what good memories...
***** spanish educational system, it was like 2 last years of high school.
juampan I'm from Spain too, how I wish I could've found a community like USA's when I was the only one of my friends that maniac abot the game.
Yeah but I've never would have played that much and so pro, just the usual 4-5 same friends. That pro level is above anything I'd imagined at the moment!
I've re-watched this 3 times now I need to stop.

"Hey guys, can you hear me?"
I just happened to join that chat right before that moment.
6:48 even in olden times they said "How can we piss off our community?"
Good shit to smashers for shutting down their cease and desist bullshit in the same day same night.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who teared up at how touching this episode was (and the series as a whole).
Smash Bros isn't Jazz, it's music.
I know you’ll probably never see this, but THANK YOU SO MUCH
Great documentary, but I'm extremely disappointed that Wombo Combo wasn't mentioned.
prob because it had to do with 2 players that no one gave two fucks about lol. also its just an old meme from the late 2000s that has no real relevance to competitive melee so there's that. also incoming 4 year late comment.
@@NVE it was a joke comment my guy
not even joking i am too
Watching this in 2022 makes me feel the same type of way I felt when I watched this back in 2013.
This was 5 hours of pleasure 😍
oh god this episode made me cry.
Tears of Joy, too see that our community as a whole, is full of beautiful people, who really just love these game and get together to enjoy them
I expected this documentary to be good, but what I got literally blew me away.
AfroNoMo This comment sumarized exactly how I felt after watching this doc.
- We'll work on that too."
Chillin 2019: gets engaged to Chelly, a girl Smasher from the UK. Times have changed, and for the better. Another congrats to Chellen!
Lol the thing is, competitive games atracts mostly men
@@erickfernando18 It attracts men but also turns women away in some respects. Ever been in a CS game and one player speaks and it turns out she's a girl? The entire dynamic is changed for the rest of the match. I've been in one or two games where people just behave normally but I'd have to say it's the minority of the time. Maybe things are different with a game like Smash where you're there in person.
Maddolis well yeah but typically any game’s top player at a competitive scene will always be a guy.
Keyword - typically
Maddolis I’m just gonna say I disagree with parts and agreement with others. Don’t feel like debating
If I could describe Smash in 1 word it's: "Together"
Nintendo brought all their best characters together so they could fight
Smash brought all our best friends together so we could fight
this comment didnt age well
“It’s not just because we play Smash Bros, it’s actually because we’re just friends.”
Wife is incredibly well spoken, props to him for being so down-to-earth and professional at the same time. You sir have acquired a new fan
6 Years later this still holds up impeccably. Thank you so much for all of this.
I wish I could have been apart of it from the day I got the game.
exactly :(
SAME!!!!
Drew ZG Same here. I have old replays of me playing Brawl back when I was a casual, I was trash. Now I have been playing competitve smash as whole for the past 2 years, and still have not gone to a tournament...
smash is love. smash is life. this is probably the best documentary i've ever seen.
18:31 Mew2Kings expression, he's like, wtf are you guys doing touching me!
When you watch this 7 years later and see how things have changed since then, its crazy
This was an amazing series
Incredible was this series, just incredible. It spoke to me on a very deep and emotional level and when I saw the credits roll I was both saddened and elated to have been able to experience this complilation. Thank you very much.
As someone who was part of this community in it's infancy I regret leaving it when I figured it was over. My outmost respect goes to all who stuck with this game through it all. I wasn't ever amazing at this game, but, I loved it and I'm glad it finally got the recognition it deserved.
that moment when you realize you have been watching you tube for 4 hours strait
+ComputerEaterOne oh my sweet summer child
Watched this close to a decade ago, and realized what I'd missed out on being in the Halo scene. I picked up the game, got destroyed by everyone I knew. My first friendly tournament, I was sent to losers my first game.. and then I beat everyone in losers, and climbed out to grand finals where even though I lost, I couldn't believe what I had done. That was almost a year ago, and I didn't know tech. Last night, I got 100% L cancelling for the first time! Hoping to be one of the best some day.
update? :)
man, you know i used to be one of those people who hated competitive smash players as I just thought that they all uptight about rules and stages and other stuff of the sort. After watching this amazing series though I now don't only realize just how wrong i was but i have also have gained a crap ton amount of respect for these people and the community as a whole. their devotion and enthusiasm for this simple fighting game meant to be played at a casual level is just awe-inspiring.
Now i wish that i was born at least a decade earlier now so that i could have experienced this for myself from the start.
its never too late :)
Believeit8
probably what there going to do because who else would the invite?
Nintendo is an Apex 2015 sponsor too. We may be looking at another "revival" soon.
I come from the future. Oh no
This aged like a literal corpse
This is a masterpiece. This documentary is amazing. The ending really touched me and has inspired me to join the competitive scene of smash. You truly are amazing
Imagine the alternate timeline where skullgirls, a game nobody has ever heard of, beat out melee and the scene slowly died out while competitive skullgirls swept the nation lmfao.
that would be so weird
The picture of Mango throwing his shirt into the crowd during his pop off to Guile’s Theme is the raddest fucking thing, manly tears of pride were shed.
Fucking goosebumps when Guile's Theme kicks in until the end of the EVO sequence EVERY. DAMN. TIME.
Mang0 the way he won... Was too legit.
SPAM
Prog, Wife, please stop making me cry. It's too beautiful.
This documentary is the fucking best
I could not have said it better, Thebuzz76.
Especially with what just happened in the last couple days with the smash community
Yeah they're bout to get a different kind of documentary :(
Ultimate is a joke.
I hope Sakurai has had the opportunity to watch this series just so that he could understand how much his game has had a major influence on so many people from so many different backgrounds. Smash bros is truly a work of art.
This is one of the greatest documentaries ever made. Period.
What an endearing experience,
to my surprise. I didn't cry at all.
But it sure hit me hard, now just wanna.
Get good, and see how far i can go.
But never losing myself, never stop being humble and legit.
And also, Don't Get Hit
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the series. I had no idea that such a great community existed. Thank you.
It was the great series. Would love to see this kind of documentary about Quake or CS.
/watch?v=PBncjnPP-ts
Not nearly as good as the smash doc, but still pretty good
This is a doc for melee cuz it shows there is.literally no other game like melee and its history of competitive gaming. Greatest competitive game there will ever be.
Steve arteaga Starcraft
At the end they did jot put azen
I meant not put ASEAN when naming the people in doumentray
That's really good to hear :) I want Smash 4 to be a huge hit and see everyone playing it at tournaments, as do most other people I'm sure.
worldsboss I think the Little Mac trailer shows all you need to know about the fixing of the pace.
i heard that nintendo as a whole was aware of it
I only played Smash very (very very) casually and never properly understood the beauty and depth of it. This is one of the best gaming documentaries I've seen. Thank you for this, it was beautiful!
ChillinDude was the unsung hero of this doc, he was the gatekeeper to greatness, he was never the one to win these tournaments, but if you beat him it means you're one of the great players.
That's my dog!!!
13:40 lol that song is Sunset Theme from the Home Movies soundtrack. Beautiful
+Ryan Wilson Your viewpoint is not exclusive to Smash.
This documentary makes me want to cry. It just hits you on such a personal level
This was an absolutely amazing documentary. The transitions, the humour, the sound bytes, the interviews, all the timing and directing. Absolutely fantastic.
16:32
"Producer's friend who got bodied by KDJ" what a nice thing to be known by xD
It's probably the first time I watch and watch again and again and again a documentary about video games and cry every god damn time... Thanks for that
Heartfelt, and leaving me with a feeling of sadness to leave this community behind. Thanks for the sneak-peek! Will play Melee with different eyes next time, even if I won't be able to do any of the advanced moves in this series. :)
Wow this is a great documentary, seriously watched it in one sitting and came out knowing so much about a whole community I was absolutely alien to before. Great job
Wife for president
Hugs can be his speechwriter, if need be
What an amazing documentary.
If this documentary came out in DVD form i would buy it
One of the most entertaining things i've watched and its great for non-gamers and gamers to watch.
