    I've watched both Ken and Chillindude's commentary on the documentary and they both pretty much confirmed the Isai worship in this video.
    For example Ken told a story about how Isai showed him Shield Dropping going "you see? you see?" and Ken was like "what the hell, that's not useful"
    Basically Isai was always ahead of everyone else in tech skills at the time.
    Chillindude was watching his matches saying something like "noone played like that back then, he played like he's in 2010+"
    Crazy shit.

    I think I understand completely why Isai never tried in singles. When you're _that_ good at a game, if you go all out like Isai would when taunted or in clutch situations, nobody wants to play with you. It's not fun to play against, similar to what Wife was saying. I imagine Isai never tried because he didn't want to push people away, especially when it came to Smash, his like true passion. And considering the almost complete lack of social skills, it's not easy to counterbalance being amazing at a game with jokes and usual extrovert camaraderie. It's just frustrating for the other player, and they leave. So he throws the match, so they are enticed to keep playing. TL;DR: So he's not further isolating himself by simply having fun with potential friends.

      NOTE: THIS IS MY OPINION ON WHY ISAI NEVER TRIED -
      Isai did not need the victory, and for that reason, he had no desire to fight for it. Isai is an interesting person, and you can see that. In my opinion, Isai had a rough childhood. I might not know it, but from how closed off he is, I believe he did, as that is a symptom of being a child of divorce. (My parents are divorced as well) This, in my opinion, also explains Isai's love for 64. Smash 64 isn't as much about the mind games and competitiveness, it's about the fun, the comboes. The biggest smash 64 event is the combo contest, a fun, wild event, not a competitive tournament where everyone is tryharding.. And maybe, just maybe, buried deep within his love of the game is the nostalgia smash 64 gives him when he plays it. That game was released when he was 13 or 14, so it's completely possible. But back to his NEVER TRYING in melee.
      I simply don't think that Isai is into competition in terms of building a legacy and ego. Maybe he has slight autism, which makes you have different priorities, but if it is that, I truly believe it's from extremely high intellect and being bred differently in terms of his emotions. It's very likely that as a kid, he learned to prioritize his relationships over his ego and himself, because of the loneliness he felt with his parents distance. I suffer through things similar to this. My parents were divorced, and I became so afraid of being alone, that I quite literally do not care about competition at all, or about my image. I simply want to be around others and for them to like me. And so for that reason, I think Isai did not care about melee competitions because what he truly wanted was to be a part of the community, and becoming the best player in that community was not what he needed. He didn't need the fame or power, he simply wanted the relationships that came from travelling to tournaments, and to fill the void that had been built all his life. Sure, you could say that Isai let the people win because he didn't want them to be sad, and maybe so he could still hang with them, but I truly believe that it's much deeper.
      I hope that Isai is doing well right now, and that he has learned how to escape from the fear of rejection or being left alone, because in my opinion, it is the single thing that lead to his sand bagging and indifference to competition and putting in his all.

    I like to imagine that some day, Isai and Ken will bump into each other at a tournament (probably Apex) and start reminiscing about when they were teammates. Then Ken challenges him to a match of Melee and being in such a good mood, Isai agrees but only if they go somewhere private. So they play in an empty room and Isai 4 stocks him. Ken knew this was coming and simply laughs it off, shakes his hand and the two go their separate ways once again.

    Something about Isai's part about daydreaming and longing for friends is almost beautiful: it's so innocent and humble, you wouldn't really think it could come from a person of his skill. On the one hand, I think it's kind of difficult to not be sympathetic and sort of feel bad, but at the same time, he was able to step back from himself (deciding to retire from melee eventually, even though most others disagreed) and just sort of stick with what he did enjoy, because of his independence. It really is quite inspiring yet kind of stabbing at the same time.

    • @marcdimartino9118
      @marcdimartino9118 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +ffdp419 I totally agree with you. I think this mindset he has... ... it's just so representative of what such an innocent guy feels like in this world that's so not innocent. It's why those anime screenshots were cycling through. I think people like him can see what they want in these fictional worlds and places, but tragically that all is not attainable here... How he says he uses his imagination to imagine things... ... It's all pure people like him can really do. Yes, very emotional indeed.

    This was the best episode in my opinion. There is just is just something so admirable about the way Isai plays on a team compared to how he plays singles. I think it shows how loyal and selfless he is, kinda like a guy who would take a bullet for a close comrade in a firefight. Also the way he talks in his interview without being on camera combined with the great video editing is just really thought provoking.

    He’s the reason I main Captain Falcon primarily (I was a Sonic main at the time). His skills, matched only by Ken, put him in a league above LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE, a league he never wanted, the god with VOLUNTARY mortality. He is the people’s choice.

      At one point, or some point or on other days. Each of those top players years ago can beat one another. Ken can dominate and Isaiah can beat Ken depending on if he tries, etc.
      It don't matter really.
      At the end of the day they are all still one of the Best Smashers in history.
      And then of course there are all the other OP Japanese players in Japan that we don't really know anything about except Captin Jack and some others that could reckt the top American players for fun. But Americans don't really mention that as much. But hey. It is what it is.

    • @juliandiaz462
      @juliandiaz462 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I know, each episode really focuses on one person it seems like mainly and shows them at their prime but really Isai is just too good I think. He just never tried. When he did though he will win. In dubs he was the best cause he just didnt wanna let his teammate lose so he did his best to win. He knocked out some of the East Coasts best by himself pretty much in that FC crew battle. That shit was crazy. Ken dominated singles but if Isai wanted to play Ken wouldnt have won that much in opinion.

    • @LukeMM95
      @LukeMM95 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He's still almost untouchable in Smash 64 but yeah, I would have loved it if Isai kept playing Melee. You watch footage of Isai's Falcon back in 2005 and it's not that much different to the best Falcon players of today. If Isai had just kept playing the game, he may still be considered the best Melee player.

      Nah, I don't think so. Isai was an absolute beast back in the day, but now a days even the gods of smash aren't as dominant as they used to be.
      Im sure Isai wouldn't dominate Leffen as much as you might be thinking, or he might even be in serious danger of losing to Leffen. After Isai propelled the meta game forward, and after better training equipment like the 20XX Hack Pack came out, people are definitely more of a threat to top players now than they have ever been before. Isai would need at LEAST a 6 month grace period to get his sea legs in melee again, and might need to lose in a few tournaments before he could break top 25 again.

He's literally spent years, day after day, hours upon hours of playing with him, living with him, traveling with him, etc. He finally harnessed all that shit and predicted every fuckin move and surgically picked Ken apart, holy shit. 90% of the moves he did in the last 3 of that set, he does it because he knows what Ken's going to do in response. Damn. Super Saiyan indeed. He was watching Ken in slow motion lmao. This Smash Doc deserves to be nominated for an Oscar seriously though.

    Whoever decided to interview Isai like this, likely the producer, sculpted this episode and arguably the heart of the documentary. It doesn't matter what game it is, they're not just players but they're people, too. Instead of sticking an intimidating camera in Isai's face and pushing him further into his familiar shell, thank you for not being lazy and showing Isai on first impressions th-cam.com/video/qEibecSOTvQ/w-d-xo.htmlm36s , but for showing Isai in such a way that he's endearing and yearning to be loved and needed. It makes him, in my opinion, the most like-able of all. I'm disregarding the editing decision of anime pictures in this episode, because it's not important. Edit images of anything you want over this episode for all I care. It is the episodes like this that make this documentary more than SSB, and more enjoyable. The way the players have been befriended help make this documentary what it is.

    It seems to me that Isai just wants to be your friend. The difference between 1 vs 1 and 2 vs 2 could be in singles he wants the person across from him to be his friend, where on doubles it's like he "has" the friend and wants to maintain that friend. But of course this is just a scenario that could be false as well.
