Let's face it, Trent Reznor just doesn't ever give anything less than an inspiring performance. He's written and produced some of the most vital and essential music in the last 30 years. Legendary.

That hidden distorted drum part... That’s why this series is so good. Never noticed that before. It’s not a surprise knowing Reznor, but damn that’s a gem.

i think that is a Reznor reused sound. he has many sounds that he changes a bit here and there but they are in 5-10 songs each. not sure where but that one sounds like PHM.

Speaking of NIN and production standards. The Downward Spiral, after a couple of a bit more crudely perceived first listens, I began to realize I never "ever" heard a more novel and ingenious set of approaches to production in a single package. Extremes, and seemingly blatant defiances to what the average producer was telling artists what to do and what not to do. I think I absorbed it another 40 0r so times uninterrupted during my subsequent morning commutes. I get bored easily normally, but there seemed to be layers of nuances to discover that kept me interested . Pure genius, still holds surprizes to this day.

    • @jonb4145

It really is phenomenal. There are so many great interviews from the 90's where they talk about their production techniques, gear used, and so much other valuable, super interesting information. There's even a GearSlutz thread where Charlie Clouser himself (engineer / bandmate) talks about super-super-super first-hand information about many many songs and other things. Such fascinating information.

I think a thing that the Odyssey plug in is missing is how an Arp Odyssey works. It's a duophonic synth, but when you play two notes at once, the two oscillators are split to each note and play independently of each other. It is a sound that is somewhat unique to that particular synthesizer. Great video!!

I'm just new to this channel, but I really really appreciate how Rick separates out all the different parts of the song, so I can hear them clearly. Next for me is to learn enough music theory that I can understand some more of what he's saying. When he says "really cool part", I agree, and feel like I'm juuuuuuust about grasping the actual theory parts, but I'm not quite there yet.
