      I agree, there is something majestic about a mono-hull heeled over under full sail in a rough sea.

    What a GREAT video on how to use a drone from a moving boat! I’ve seen so many “fail” drone videos where operators do it wrong, and with very expensive consequences. You guys covered the bases, and I like that whoever is the catcher wears protective gloves.
    In general though, bigger drones can handle the wind much better, and sport mode should be used only to catch up. I would suggest that you recalibrate the compass away from anything metal though, especially when you travel to different locations. It’s a pain in the neck, but will save you from one of those expensive malfunctions.
    One other suggestion. DJI drones, especially the newer ones, have pre-programmed flight programs. The one that I have in mind is “orbit”. I’ve used this program on stationary subjects and it’s great! It’ll orbit the subject and keep it centered. If it does the same thing for your boat the results would be fantastic!

    When catching anything keep your elbow bent. With your arm straight, like you were doing, you have less reaction ability. Look at base ball players catching fly balls, foot ball receivers catching passes, etc. Stay loose in the arm better reaction time etc. Stretch your arm out to judge distance for both of you, but keep it flexed for catching.

    Just heard you say "Should get one of those Palms" meaning a sailmakers' palm. I have been working on sails and rigs (not full time, but enough) to believe that having the right tools is key to a good job and making your tools all last. So why a Sailmakers Palm for pushing the needle through the many layers of webbing, using plyers to push and pull the needle through puts markings on the needle which makes it snag and harder to push through! Also as you have found can also result inbreaking the needle!
    Thoroughly enjoy your videos, and interested to see how the full electric system works on extended cruise.

    About the sliders: I had a bad experience with a friend and his Lagoon: We test set the main and couldn't get it back down.
    There came another old Lagoon owner along and told us to clean the mast rail twice a year - otherwise the sail can stuck.
    We cleaned the rail with no success - then in a second attempt we cleaned all the sliders. After that the sail went smooth again.

      Sounds like it needs a specifically designed track scraper car.... one that can be run up and down the track on its own, on a looped hallyard before having to hoist a sail.. done frequently enough it should prevent any build up inside and as it doesnt have a sail hanging on it and trying to twist it, (with a simple adjustable spring pre load) it should make it as easy to haul up and down as flag.
      So after lowering the sail a couple of trips of the scraper car to the top and back should be enough to keep any build up at bay.. felt brushes or rollers and a drip feed bottle of PTFE lube should keep things moving for most masts.
      A small gap ,port or hatch at the bottom of the cars track run should facilitate swapping and also be large enough to allow the interception of any falling detritus and enable its removal🤔.

    • @wjhann4836
      @wjhann4836 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Well that Lagoon had how is it called - cars with reels that reach from outside over the rail. So we cleaned them with a small brush without moving the sail.
      It was stunning: 2 days before a sailor was pulled up the mast and brushed all the rail - nothing. Brushing that cars - everything fine.

It seems as if the sails are the correct size and trimmed well, and the hull shape efficient so that the boat easily powers through the waves and chop without stumbling or thrashing. Perhaps some of that perception comes from the minimal wake that is created also. Watching every week from Vancouver, BC.

    To begin, I'm impressed that you have taken a '72 Pearson that was a month away from the salvage yard and turned it into a really beautiful (outside and inside) sailing yacht that has taken you to some beautiful anchorages in remote locations in the Atlantic littoral region. You obviously know the value of having overhead drone shots for your audience appreciation and with a significant WoW value! Flying them from a moving sailboat is probably the most challenging use of them for vlogging. It is always great to see it being done well and learning how to improve one's skills. Flying large and heavy aircraft from, and back to a ship is difficult but the techniques are similar, in that you launch and catch them, allbeit from opposite ends of the boat.
    Have you considered using a "plaster hawk' with a magnetic tape covering (like the signs used for advertising on the doors of cars) as a recovery platform? You could epoxy some nickel-sized neodymium magnets to the feet of the drone and it should stick pretty quickly and well to the landing platform. I would think it would be easier and safer than a hand grab, although you did that very well. I thought that making a survival vest for it out of styrofoam that could be attached to it just before it was launched out over water, would make it possible to at least recover a crashed drone to get your SD card back.

    I flew and caught my Mavic Air 2 many times, until the first time I missed something - I'd like to blame the wind, but it was me I'm sure. And it whacked the hell out of my finger. Now I do wear a glove, but I feel like a wimp. So I'll take it off soon, and catch it once more with my scarred finger. Nah... there's no scar. It's not that bad! But it really does hurt. Payment for a passion. And thanks for yet another great video.

      Yes, it does hurt and bleeds a bit too! I still feel I get a better grip with my bare hand, so haven't used a glove. But have to admit since being whacked only once by the blades, my next time catching on a moving boat, was quite an adrenaline rush!!! 😉

    i would recommend the sailor's palm for push, then the pliers for pull. the beauty of the thing is once you get it fit (mine is a little loose intentionally) your hands are still both totally free and you don't know it's on unless you need it. "let's rock and roll" HA I thought you had enough of that the day before! Sea you next week!

    Great episode - but - the drone video of the boat in full flight was stunning. Loved every second of the whole episode.

    Cool shots! Here’s a tip… It’s not advisable to tilt the drone after catching it. Simply hold the throttle stick all the way down for a few seconds or until the motors shut down. This is safer and a more gentle way of shutting down.

    Watching this, I have an idea for drone makers. It would be nice if they could develop a wrist band a drone can home in to. It would free the operator from having to use the controller. The user can press a homing button on the band to tell to drone to come to their hand. Or, it can be an app on their phone, which is strapped to their lower arm -- like closer to their wrist. It's just a thought.

      Dam just losed the phone overboard, o dear there goes the drone.

      @@robnaylor3717 Hmm...I can see if you're holding the phone in one hand while trying to catch the drone with the other, in a situation shown in the video, how it could fall overboard. I envision something like the arm strap people use for their phones when they are jogging or exercising. However, instead of high up on the arm, it should be a strap you can use to attach the phone to your wrist, like a large watch.

      Sounds like a great idea to me. Auto landing could be so accurate as to have it land in a drone dock. No hand catch necessary.

    You guys could easily install a lightweight magnetic plate to use as a landing pad instead of trying to catch it with your hands.....some intense velcro might do the trick as a landing pad too if the Mavic Air 2 is super lightweight. Awesome work on this episode. You guys rock.

    Honestly the last drones footage was the best. Maybe the lighting, maybe the edit 🤷🏻 But all were good. Phantom 3 Standard and Mavic Air 2s owner. Any way you cut it, glad drones are here.

    I've got the DJI mini 2 and so far it's been great. However, I'm always stationary. Flying from a moving platform is next level difficult. Hat's off on the catches, good job! I get nervous enough catching standing still. ha.

    Hi guys thank you very much for the videos just thinking out loud you mentioned the solar panels. I think you will be able to add one more on each side of those with hinges and deployed them when you are not in narrow spaces... At two piano hinges to the new panel brackets and two adjustable legs with quick pins release.... Don't know that's just me you think about it

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Possible? Sure. Practical not really. It’s a lot of weight to have back there when the wind a seas pick up. But more solar is on our list.

    Vinson of Antarctica is, world renowned high latitude sailor, Skip Novak’s boat. While learning drone skills from one of the crew may be valuable, spending a few hours talking to Skip would be priceless.
