Nerd alert: I read a fanfiction story a few years ago that had Jan Mayan as a setting (Jormungandr and Loki were main characters) and while reading it, I googled and imagined what it would look like in an effort see what the author was trying to describe. There are some really good photos out there but to see it at ground level, walking with you and seeing the native vegetation makes me fill in the imaginary blanks I had when reading that story. That's so cool! A beloved story has been enriched and a favorite YT channel has given us another amazing adventure. Thank you!

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for an excellent video! The music, and audio of the birds, and the photography and editing just after that to the end of the video is amazing, and feels like you have any entire production team with you. Using the drone to follow you, and then putting the camera on the ground with Uma in the background is really breathtaking. Amazing work!!

Absolutely amazing you guys sailed to Jan Mayen on such a beautiful day. What a spectacular place.
Seagulls can definitely aim their poop. I once parked our Honda minivan in a whole line of parked cars near the Morro Bay rock on the California coast. We had a black cargo container on top that I think the seagulls must have thought looked like an elephant seal where it shouldn't be. After less than an hour It looked like about five gallons of white thickened epoxy was dumped on it. None of the other cars had anything. Cost us $14 in the 'quarter' car wash just to wash enough of it off to be able to use the car. And theh there was a two year period where the seagulls near Long Beach, California would change direction to fly towards me to try and poop on me in my sea kayak. I learned to point my paddle at them like a spear, they'd veer off and almost always let one loose. About four years ago they stopped. I think someone in a kayak must have done something mean to a seagull.

    • @ilarious5729
      @ilarious5729 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I've been a victim of seagull poop attacks on lake Saimaa back when my family had a boat there, they do that especially when they're protecting their nests. I must say it's a good defence mechanism, not once did I spend a second longer than I had to in their close proximity lol

Back when I was taking sailing lessons in Newport Beach, CA I thought owning a boat and traveling the world would be so great. Then I bought a small boat and learned that the old platitude about owning a boat was true, that the two best days of boat ownership are the day you buy it and the day you sell it. Looking at some of these videos of yours, and especially others with older couples my age (69) sailing 45-55' catamarans and trimarans make me want to go out and try that dream again.

I know that feeling that comes from incredible adventure! We were on a Geological Survey in the untouched Canadian Arctic Region of Kikerk Lake Northwest Territories.
Beside our temporary camp in the arctic tundra was a 500 meter long Glacier made of the purest water. This immaculately pure aqua blue ice fissure was beautiful beyond words. I had to explore it.
After I climbed out of it's ice cave I followed a stream cut through the ice sheet's roof and of course I laid down and drink from it just for the experience!
As I walked a few steps upstream I noticed a caribou had gone poo in the water.
But hey, I reckon its still safer than water in any city I have ever been.

A miracle! Had you sacrificed even more sleep you could have shot enough video for an hour long documentary and financed the rest of your trip off those proceeds! You should have asked those "indigenous" caretakers how often the weather was clear and calm like that! Perhaps no one has ever seen Jan Mayen in its entirely with so much beauty before. Good job! As usual! We saw some steam venting through the gravel. Are there any hot springs on the island? Is that pool heated by one? You also seemed to have some pretty good weather on Svalbaard! It looks like Uma's big arctic adventure is going to be gold plated! Can't wait to see your videos from your circumnavigation of Greenland! ;)
At the end when you were perched atop some rocks overlooking the little 'baylet', we could hear the kiss! What camera has that kind of sensitivity at that distance?

I wNt to attribute it to your zest for adventure and what I interpret as awe and gratitude for what the planet has to offer. I stated out watching quite a few video logs of sailing adventures. I have pared it down to you and Erik from NBJS. THANKS again.

Thanks for taking us with you, guys. It's not anywhere I'm ever, ever going to be so it's neat to see. Stark and beautiful! I think you should print up a companion T-shirt for Don't Buy a Couch... Don't Buy a Bed, You Can Sleep When You're Dead.

Hi Dan & Kika ! Thanks for your amazing videos, it always brings sunshine to receive a notification every time you uplaod a video !
The places you go are wonderful and the way you film and narrate them is amazing.
I was surprised to see the Fontainbleau wooden sign as it is located in France (70km - 43 miles south of Paris)...small world !
Anyway, keep enjoying your journey and keep us part of it, as wherever you go, we kind of go with you :)

I had to wait until I could watch this on my computer instead of my phone, because I love your videography. I was impressed, as always. Thank you for taking us places that are so remote....I don't want to say that I'll never go - but it's unlikely. Yet, with your beautiful videos, I am adding items to my bucket list. Thank you!

What a privilege to be among the Uma-ites viewing this beauty! A rare and strange jewel of an island. And a Host Couple equally rare and dare I say of "strange jewel caliber?" In a good way of course.

I have followed you two since the beginning with early work on Uma and Dan’s learning to sail. These two episodes, particularly the drone video is the most strikingly spectacular footage you have posted. The first drone shot of Uma ghosting along under spinnaker with the snow-capped volcano viewed against the painted northern sky is a unique and incomparably rare sequence. I have cruised and travelled to remote places and am envious of this slice of your journey. -Mike Jacker

I for the longest time had no idea what the horn sound meant in your introduction for a while.
Now studying for my captains license, I learned that it’s a sound signal for a NUC, RAM, sail, fishing, trawling, towing, or pushing vessel in restricted visibility. Very cool to know what it means now!!

I'd like to recommend a book to the two of you by Charles Hapgood. " Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings." Hapgood postulates that there existed an even more ancient mariner civilization that mapped out the world than our current understanding of what our modern history lays out. The Zeno Map of 1380 and The Ptolemaic Map of the North along with The Map of Andrea Benincasa were all sourced on older maps that run in complete contradiction to when many discoveries were made. These three maps focus mainly on the area that you are currently sailing in now. Wow, whadda adventure you're on.

According to Wikipedia that place gets around six days of sun a year... given that it was already sunny, while you were approaching, the sun spent about third of the time designated to that place, just to shine on you two continuously! One might as well say, the sun _demanded_ you to do some hiking there and you totally earned it!

How lucky you guys are, six known days of sunny weather Jan Mayan has got and there you are on one of those, it is as if it was ment to honour you with a nice weather welcome.
Your filming is amazing, so beautifully done, and the way you put it together is a marvel. It is a bit of a surprise that the hosts of Jan Mayan shied away, seems like they were too busy to share their time. Can not wait for your next adventure, stay safe and healthy.

Maybe the good weather is not so much luck as it is a side effect of the need to carefully select the weather windows they want to use.

Hi there! I’m new to the channel, actually discovered you guys couple weeks ago when I tested positive for Covid and forced to stay home. I just felt in love! You are so inspiring, I’m in my late 40s a little to late for that kind of adventure, but, I got inspired by you to leave my comfort zone and try different things. I wish you all the best and be safe on your adventures.

late 40's, lol. Bro, look around, there's folks in their 70's on similar adventures. And every single one will say go now, don't wait for "retirement". 40 isn't too old at all. Dan and Kika are babies of the cruising world.

One rock or tiny little island if you want to call it that. Is “rockall”. That’s between Iceland and northwest of Scotland. Not many people have seen this rock. I have. It’s a pinnacle that jettisons straight out of the sea. You can’t really go ashore there but it nice to see. That’s if it’s anywhere on you’re journeys. Love the videos 👍👍👍
