- I never use video - but on my most recent wildlife trip (India), I really wanted to capture the amazing calls of this gorgeous male tiger I was lucky enough to see in Kanha on February 21, 2013 at the Kisili gate during the am game drive. My guide, Rajan, found the tiger and we were the only vehicle watching him as he got up from laying in a pond and made his way to the road, walking along calling for a mate the whole time. It was an amazing sighting!!! Glad I was able to record it! It was so cool to hear these calls; one of the highlights of my entire month long wildlife trip! Recorded on a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX200V camera in HD.

Yep, that's what a meow sounds like coming out of 600 lbs of muscle. ;) He is indeed literally meowing. That "Waa-OOM" is just "mee-ow" in basso profundo.

It forces air out if it’s lungs through the wind pipe, the air vibrates through the larynx and pharynx, which attach to the hyoid bone. All big cats have a hyoid bone, this allows them to roar. There is a video on TH-cam of some scientists doing a post mortem autopsy on a lion, where they show how it works. It takes an incredible amount of air and force to produce the roars and bellows that big cats such as lions and tigers make.

Lions start with these low and slow roars that sounds like a wolf´s howl pitched down! Then they do the huge roars, which shake the whole place, and then they end with those quick roars!

thts the most horrific voice one can ever hear in the jungle . lions roar is loud too but this calling voice of a tiger has got some real horror into it . although he is just calling his or her mate .
Harris Khan yeah the Lions might be louder but the Tigers call is more eerie and atmospheric.

Heard that moan one time near a place called Shivthar Ghal, 90 kms south of Pune, Maharashtra, India. Bright sunny warm day a little before noon. Makes your blood freeze especially when:
1. You are exposed and on the same ground as the tiger.
2. You can hear it but cannot locate the direction because it is echoing off the nearby hillsides.

Reading the book "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" then listening to this sound.... I can imagine how horrified are the people when hearing it and knowing it came from a Man-Eater!

when i went to the zoo of my city, we were in BIG CAT section. we heard roar and i ran to that cage and i saw this majestic animal roar, i was the only one to see it roar, after some time crowd gathered there so the tiger stopped roaring

In India you experience this from Jeep Safari, I am from Nepal when I was walking with guests in Chitwan National Park we encountered Tiger calling for his partner. Fortunately it didn't attacked us.
