  • In an astonishing talk and tech demo, software researcher Doug Roble debuts "DigiDoug": a real-time, 3-D, digital rendering of his likeness that's accurate down to the scale of pores and wrinkles. Powered by an inertial motion capture suit, deep neural networks and enormous amounts of data, DigiDoug renders the real Doug's emotions (and even how his blood flows and eyelashes move) in striking detail. Learn more about how this exciting tech was built -- and its applications in movies, virtual assistants and beyond.

This level of technology warrants great concern. If we’re worried about “fake news” now, imagine the kind of chaos fake digital press conferences, interviews etc, can cause? When a political or business leader is falsely impersonated? Not good. We’re not ready.

Callie Seattle lol i don't see the connection sorry. Everyone has flaws that make them look stupid in a certain situation, i don't think that is relavant here. A lot of people on the internet doesn't have even basic education so i think its quite impossible to expect that people would use grammar correctly. I've yet to change my opinion on vr technology, AI, cashless society... as of now i think even tho what he is doing is admirable and great, i think its not a priority as we/they present it over and over again. All these things will bring great distress to probably everyone so why not start talking about the big picture rather than just obsessing over vr and the "good" side of all this.
But i was trying to say that people should rather focus on physical reality because that is what it all is and is about. And cancer, it was just random as cancer can be hehe, i don't want to talk about that as i don't think i have enough info to properly form my opinion on how are we doing on that at all.

The manufacturer of the inertial motion capture suit is the Dutch company Xsens. The technology uses gyros to measure rotations of the human body. Accelerometers are used to measure linear displacemens. Rotations and linear displacements are mapped onto that 3D human model. The limitation of it is it suffers from data drifts in the long run due to the parts' physical properties.
The manufacturer of the face capture system is the American company Faceware. Human face models in the library are called in real time to match the real person's facial expressions.
Both tools are in the genre of VR/simulation/motion capture technology.

If anyone wants to have a play with something similar to the facial part of this, Face-Over-IP (FOIP) is built into Star Citizen. It isn't perfect by any means (or even as good as this), but you can use your ordinary webcam and don't need the training or head rig this guy has, either. And yes, it maps your facial motions onto whatever character you made.
