      Biggest downgrade going from pfSense to UDM Pro, but looks like he doesn't use most of what pfSense has to offer anyways. For that matter no need for managed switches either. Everything on one subnet

      @@geoffupton works great. A hardware pfsense unit can handle the DHCP, firewall rules, vlans, routing etc and unifi controller would be configured to match. pfsense is SOOO much easier when you get down the port-forwarding and VPN rabbit hole that you need to do over CLI in unifi.

      @@sbredin82 If I had to guess Jason gave up on pfsense due to his failure to make a backup of the config file. I can understand not having a backup of your "Linux ISOs" as that can get rather huge and costly but backups of device config is a no brainer.

    As an IT Administrator, this video hurt me something REAL Good...
    The replacing of the PFSense for a Dream Machine, for the topology?!
    The 7.7.7.x comment.
    Drill down from the attic and dealing with the "eh" Placement of the AP instead of drill UP into the attic to place it where you want it.
    The whole VLAN Situation. Communication between subnets/VLANS is as easy as a firewall rule in PFSense!
    Yes the Unifi AP and Switching products are the shit, but their Routing products are trash. Yes they LOOK Nice and have a bunch of superficial features, but when it comes to functional features, nearly any other Router would have done.

      When you say that the Ubiquiti's routing is trash, you're only referring to the Unifi brand, right? If not, could you share some thoughts on it? I've been using an ER-X for a long time and it seems to be pretty good for a ~$60 router.

    • @GeorgeThaxton
      @GeorgeThaxton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JoaoRodrigoGoncalves you are correct, the edge routers are better than the unifi stuff. Granted I've not worked to much with the edge routers, but for the cheap little devices they are, they offer decent configurability. The unifi line is not great when it comes to features like VPN and IPS. Sure it all LOOKS pretty as hell, and that's why I was irked by the video. It seems like he took out the pfsense for a pretty typology layout. There are plenty of other Dockers that could have given him that interface from his unraid machine. But then again, he may have gotten the eq for the price of a video. Then at that point, I understand what he did from an influencers prospective. But not a tech prospective

      Having UniFi here (well, having EVERYTHING here), I'd suggest people who can "do," do it with UniFi or Aruba access points, decent switches, OPNSense on multi-homed hosts, and a management host with Ansible. It's so much better, allows separation of IOT, Guest, workstations/phones, set-top-boxes, and servers. Want a lab? Doable. Kids protected from using the Internet between certain hours? Doable. Keep Guest WiFi on (and secure) only when 100% needed? Lock POE Wired Gigabit security cameras to specific MAC ranges? Keep IOT from accessing the Internet but let set-top-boxes, TVs, Alexa, Google hubs, etc., do it? OPN"Sense makes it easy. UniFi routers, switches, management, and security camera gear is "meh." Blue Iris blows their security setups away.

      Most Switches, even cheap ones, can handle a shitload of Abuse over a long period of time. I think the one he has, will handle that for around another 5+ years just fine. But as we know Jason, he will get the cheapest Unifi POE switch he can find, to stick it up the attic, just for the nice tree in the Software. He should really just go and run some cable down to his Server Room. That way he doesnt need to do anything ever again. Better yet, 2 cables per device he wants to connect. Probably nothing to worry about ever again.

    • @justinhadley317

So even 50°C under full load should probably be handled just fine and that counts for almost all switches. Jason even has airflow. Man i'm kinda shook about your subnetting and vlan thesis. Configuring VLANs on a decent L3 switch should be pretty easy and once its configured it should just be good to go. You mention you have IoT device, NAS storage, I wouldn't want these on the same network if I could help it (for things like ransomware).
    I was a Unifi fanatic after seeing their airFiber product in production and bought thinking their APs would have the same heritage. They dont. I've seen alot of posts in the unifi forums where the only fix to an issue is to erase the controller configuration and start over. Sometimes Unifi changes things in a minor release (like when they decided to add _IoT to every SSID), which end up breaking the configuration.

    I love my Ubiquiti Unifi access points. I installed 2 access points in my house. My house is not that big; one floor. But Amazon had a sale back in February. 1st access point is in the ceiling 8 feet from the front door & the 2nd one is 6 inches from the back door so I have excellent coverage in my patio. The PC app is so easy to use. I have 5G wifi access speeds to all my wireless devices.
    My nephew and niece love my wifi because it's a lot faster than what they have at home. They always bring their laptops and smart phones. I just ordered a Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway which is coming in this Friday June 25th. Can't wait to set that up.
    But now after watching your video I kinda want to upgrade my NETGEAR 24-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged PoE+ Switch (GS324P) to a UniFi Switch PoE 24 US-24-250W 24-Port Managed PoE+ Gigabit Switch with SFP. That way I can have all my essential network hardware under one brand and access it all under one web app for everything.

    I have two UniFi UAC AC Pro APs that I put in to fix WiFi range, and I also have a miniPC from QOTOM running pfSENSE fork OPNsense, and it works great. I would like to eventually go full on balls to the wall(s) Unifi across my entire network like you're aiming to do, but that's money I don't want to spend right now and how I have it set up at least in terms of WiFi the coverage is usable. If/when I move into a larger apartment or potentially when my family buys a house again I'll definitely be looking into a more robust setup like what Ubuiquti offers. I can't offer much help with VLANs and whatnot since that requires something like a UDM Pro in their lineup to be present, but I'll be watching and cheering you on from here. Thanks for this video!

    1) I think the AP you mounted near your main room/kitchen has a metal plate on it that it doesn't need (not 100% sure). On the older UAP-Pro that metal is designed to go on top of a drywall/drop ceiling as an anchor essentially without using drywall anchors, then the WAP clicks onto a plastic ring that is mounted directly to the ceiling.
    2) Please stick to Classes A/B/C for private routing, anything else technically is a public IP somewhere (ie 7.7.7.7 or whatever combination you were thinking there). A = 10.x.x.x/8 (or 255.0.0.0), B = 172.16.x.x/16 (or 255.255.0.0), and C = 192.168.x.x/24 (or 255.255.255.0). Technically yes, you can use whatever IP you want but this may one day bite you in the rear when you try to access a website and local DNS resolves it to your router.
    3) Nice cabinets.

    PLEEEEASE put fans facing outward at each window in the attic. You NEED that air to move and go outside for the PoE to have the correct airflow around it. Lower-level cool air has to move upper-level hot air so having fans facing outward would really help a lot. That is why there are attic fans on the highest point of new homes. Roofers also add fans on the roof from the attic to protect roofs in order to have airflow below the roof as much as on top of it. With that said it is extremely important to put the fans in the attic or at the windows going outward because of all the extra juice in the network. I'm the person who understands the signal and how it travels, etc. Please fix the attic air flow ASAP. Easy fix if you have windows up there. I know you know what you are doing but when we do our own thing over and over again sometimes details can be blurred now and then. Yeah, I prefer to figure it out myself too. It is the best way to learn everything.

    Couldn't find anyone else with the comment yet, so here I am to rain on the SFP+ parade. One SFP+ 10g port is for LAN, one is for WAN, and right now, there is no way to re-assign. Would be nice if they let you pick the zone for each port the way more expensive routing hardware does.

    You can switch your 10G switch for this one. Not that expensive and with 8 10GB SFP+ ports. I have one myself which I also connect my NAS, Plex Server and a DELL server.
    Switch Aggregation

      UDM Pro is not that great; If you are stuck with UniFi, look at the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus and don't run it in the cloud (local only). UDM Pro is really flaky now on updates/upgrade of firmware. Read the horror stories before spending the money. I have one, and have relegated it to "side network" use. Their basic switches are okay. The CCG2+ works for local management as long as everything is UniFi. Honestly, research here on TH-cam (Lawrence Systems is a good channel) before investing money. I have had to fix a lot of local businesses which bought into UniFi-everything and haven't had the best of luck with the infrastructure.

    Cool, so finally ubiquiti got a hold of you to hand you some "free" gear as part of Ubiquiti's marketing budget and you would've preferred 2 more "free" APs, 24 more PoE ports etc. nice...

    Yes, I also just upgraded my network with Unifi devices. I wasn't able to get the enterprise stuff. I just used a USG, three flex mini's, and four AP lites. I use Raspberry Pi to host the Unifi Controller on the network, it also hosts pi-hole, and Unbound. Do you use Unbound? Look it up! Like right now! Also, you need a cable organizer on the front of your rack between the patch panel and the switch. 👍 But if you buy a flex mini for your attic I bet you'd be fine. They're pretty cheap too.

    I'm sure you will touch on it in the next video, but i am interested in a setup similar to yours eventually, minus the 10gb as i don't need that right now, but i am curious on the cameras using a different vlan so they cannot be accessed outside of Unraid. Also are you eliminating Pfsense with this new hardware?

  • @russzaccari7761
    @russzaccari7761 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, you really should use the SFP+ port on the Pro 24 PoE and UDMPro's to connect to your 10Gb switch. Yes, the switch on the UDMPro is 1Gb but the SFP+ ports are 10Gb

  • @enixsound7620
    @enixsound7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I suggest getting a USW-Aggregation for your 10Gb devices. Don't let the name confuse you, it works as a normal switch and it's reasonably priced. I have all of my 10 Gb devices plugged into it, including the UDM-Pro and USW-Enterprise-24-PoE. For your attic, Ubiquiti has the USW-Industrial switch that can withstand extreme temps. I don't have hands-on experience with it so I don't know if it'll show up on the topology.
    Ubiquiti has a pull tab on their boxes to open them. It adds to the opening experience. I cringed when you pulled out the knife. 😬

    Unifi setups are nice and I like the ability to update all the hardware from a single interface. One thing I noticed is that I need to cache the update packages for the AC Lites to update and then delete the cache afterwards. It's been great and I made the switch to unifi as I needed dual WANs and building a new pfSense box would have cost more than UDMPro.

    Just this year so far has been pretty grim for ubiquiti. There was the breach which they acted like nothing was compromised. Then people found out that they still send telemetry data back to them even when its turned off.
    2 months ago they implemented advertisements for their own products into the dashboard then a week later someone blew the whistle on the whole breach.
    Then them being completely silent about Frag Attack whilst everyone else has acknowledged, and provided a timeline for updates if they havent been released already.
    I will say at this point im glad i didnt sink my teeth in any further then i did.
    I think once Wifi6E comes out ill be selling my ubiquiti AP and switching to Ruckus. Just looking for a camera replacement.

    So you're not using any of the mesh wifi equipment that you've reviewed recently? How much will the wifi performance be degraded by running it through the switch in the attic vs. straight to the network hardware downstairs?

    • @thesmallterror
      @thesmallterror 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Highly unlikely that it matters in a home network. The bandwidth of the link from the attic to the rack downstairs is a shared trunk, but since wifi is so much slower than wired, the trunk would have to be saturated from several other devices plugged into the attic switch for wifi clients to even notice. Queue balancing on the switch will share the trunk bandwidth, and you'd have to have quite a bit of congestion for the wifi port to get less than 350mbps (which is still a ton of bandwidth. That's 7 plex Blu-ray quality 4K streams at the same time, or 14 Netflix 4K streams.).

  • @edwardgreenjr167

    It's been mentioned, but I'll repeat it - get yourself an industrial switch if you are going to have switching equipment in the attic.

  • @ctuso

    Next time strip a piece of wire (I usually use coax due to the size of the wire) back and push it up through the ceiling to mark the hole location. Go into your attic and spot the wire then drill down. Much easier. LOL I didn't watch this until today. You know, the day after I ordered a UDM Pro and picked up a non-pro 24 port POE unifi switch as well
