I have watched hundreds of UniFi Setup videos over the years. This was by far the cleanest, most concise and easy to follow (along with excellent suggestions and explanations) I have seen. Well done!
So I know nothing about networking or switches or routers (I am a MD). I found this guy who would setup a whole Unifi system in my house consisting of 11 APs (all of the cabling is already done) and was going to charge me 5000 euro just for the installation.... which was around the same amount I already paid for my devices. I said I would do it myself. Thanks to you, I was able to install this system, setup different VLANs and help me understand how all of the basics work. Now my wife can spend 5K on something else ;)
One of the BEST Unifi videos I've seen! Your security section and VLAN section was very easy to follow and understand. New subscriber! Keep up the GREAT WORK!!!
I've been watching unifi videos for the past 3 weeks non-stop and this has been the absolute best video i've come across. Thank you for putting this together. Looking forward to getting my network all setup tomorrow when my gear arrives. Perfect timing!.
I work in the computer security field so terms make sense but I was not familiar with Unifi’s environment. I bought a house that had a Unifi network already installed but it was very basic and un-configured for good security hygiene. I looked at a lot of Unifi config videos. This was by far the most comprehensive and easiest to follow. Thanks!! Props to your Apollo passion. My dad was an engineer on Apollo and designed some critical systems on the LEM and CSM
I've watched tens of Unifi complete setup, but this video is the best one by far. Thank you so much for your kind effort on making this video. Please add donation/support or whatever link so that people outside US can support you on making other great videos.
Great video of setting up unifi. Next how about a video around setting up firewall rules and best practices for securing the vlans. Firewall rules to disable vlans from talking the the Unifi gateway except on Default network as an example.
Amazing stuff!!! Please keep more content coming as I recently converted my entire network over to Unify and love it so far! Would love to see more advanced features on what the UDM pro and Switches can do!
i got fresh into the unifi world and this video was just the GOAT ! watched like 20 videos and this video just answered all my questions. thank you so much.
Great video. I would like to see more in depth videos related to how UniFi VPNs work. Also a video about how to get devices to talk across VLANs properly. I have a SONOS system on my IOT network, but my phone can’t talk to the system without getting on the same WiFi as the Sonos system.
@BruceRichwineJr, unfortunately you will find this the case with some devices like Sonos, I have the same problems with Roku streamers. There applications are "hard coded" to look on the same network as your mobile device. You can try setting up mDNS and see if you can over come this and get it to work but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Good luck....
Even without VLANs and VPNs, your device has to be on the same network as the Sonos. I have specific settings to put on my network devices to ensure the Sonos will work correctly, and I only use Ubiquiti products. I had this setup in 4 different office buildings we had.
I had the same problem with my customer’s Sonos systems, we find it best to be on the same network as the WIFI network. When I had WIFI on one VLAN and the Sonos on another VLAN with no traffic rules, Sonos system gave us trouble.😊
@@gregcandido2218 yeah, I’ve found the same issues you did. But originally I did have things working properly, but after and update to my UDM SE traffic stopped being passed between the two networks. It’s fine. I just created a new VLAN called media devices and separated it from my work and personal data devices. Only personal device that touches the media network is my phone.
Thank you for this video!! I'm getting my Dream machine Pro and U6+ and your video has helped me feel confident in setting it all up once it gets delivered. You've got a new subscriber.
Perfect timing I just received my cloud gateway ultra today. I like the basic approach to get up and running then customizing as you get more comfortable. I hope you can offer more videos on the unifi ecosystem. Thanks for this.
This video is amazing. Great explanation, not skipping anything and just great advice in general. When I get my Unifi Routing hardware, I’m going to set up the same VLANS except for the VoIP network, since I don’t need it.
3:52 - Great video! I just bought 1 access point (U6 mesh) to add to my home network with no other Unifi devices. What is the name of the Windows software I will need to set it up?
your video are very easy to understand. Outstanding!!! It would be great if you could do video on firewall configuration in the future. Thank you for taking the time to make a laymen video.😃
Great help! I just happened to have the exact same setup as you have here, but ran into one major issue. 21:40 or so you change the network to all the ports to the staff network…. Well after looking at it you only change the unused ports. When I selected all (which is what the video sounds like you intended) it cut off the 24 port switch, and it was then basically DOA. ( I know I could SSH in, but I can’t yet for other reasons)… so I have just reset all my devices for the third time, and think I finally understand what I am doing (changing the network of the switch, so it can’t connect, and as I cut it off I can’t change it back. Judy want to let others know if they have the same issue as their switch suddenly is just offline, but working! Thanks for really great help in setting up my network!
This is exactly what happened to me as well. Everything was going well until that step, then boom...DOA. Had to reset everything and start over and now I've afraid to do this all over again. I'm not IT savvy, but your comment is helpful to avoid this happening again, so thanks.
Hands down best networking guide video I have seen. Thanks so much for creating this content. I would love to see a series of videos that provide high level details on different configuration recommendations based on the types of business you are setting the network up for. For example I am building out a network right now for a Coworking space that has high variability in devices and has a need for a in between VLAN config for clients in addition to staff but are connecting to same WiFi network. Any advice appreciated!
Two minor corrections: Your timestamp about for VPN's is incorrect. It shows 28:53 and it should be 38:53. Also, it is Virtual Private Network, not Virturial Private Network as shown in the video. Otherwise, a great video.
Great video. Clear easy understand. 1 suggestion: put your selfie video in the corner and keep the user interface visible fulltime so learning user has more time seeing the interface
I learned a lot from this, and i think what helped was the tone of the voice and detailed explanation. I would recommend if the guest speed limit is per device, set the speed to max 5mbit down and 3mbit up if it was for a coffee shop.
Very nice video! Just a small improvement is to let the dns on the vlans auto and set the DNS records in the WAN settings. In case you want to change it for any reason you don’t need to do that for every network again
Great video and I appreciate your time and effort to make this. You might consider making second video on firewall rules. My question is ..does the core network has the rules that allow access to other vlans ? What are default rules for the vlans you created ? Also note pfsense can be as an IDS and IPS. Snort and Suricata works pretty well on pfsense.
Thats actually the only thing I am missing in this Tutorial - as per default all networks are allowed to talk to each other. With the latest update to "Network 8.1.127" the Tab "Traffic Rules" has been deleted, so one has to configure this with the "Firewall Rules", but I couldnt find any video lately that covers this issue.
If you keep up this great work, your channel is about to blow up. This was the most needed thing for me to see concerning proper setup for my UDM. Thank you!
I was wondering, per your example setup. you mentioned that you dont want certain devices talking to the rest of the network so you would put them on the IoT network. so for a home network, if you have such things as alexas and appliances that can be controlled by your smart phone. how would you set that up? some of the appliances require your phone to be connected to the same network, but i would think you would want your phone to be connected to the "staff" network. sorry i may be over thinking this, but i am still learning.
Thank you for a great video! I am about to put in my first Unifi system in my home and this was a great setup tutorial! I learned some things from the information you shared. Keep the videos coming!
Wow, amazing video. Just ordered from Ubiquiti: modem, UDM Pro, 48 port Pro max and u6 Pro APs - and I've watched this video twice ahead of delivery. Very well presented, easy to follow, great coverage of the main features, and excellent editing - my confidence is high! Thank you.
This Tutorial is awesome! Very thorough explanation, absolutely love it! Could you do a follow up on specific Wifi Optimisation & Setup (Channel Settings, Band Steering, etc.)
I plan on buying UniFi gear real soon so this video was super helpful! I was wondering if you can make a video for making a VLAN local only and doesn't connect to the internet. i'm planning to put PoE cameras at my house but I want to restrict them from using internet connection. I was wondering if this is possible. Well Done on the video!
First. Brilliant tutorial. Thank you. Second. If i connect to my stuff vlan 10.xx.2. It totally buggy and not working at all to connect to my 10.xx.1 or 10.xx.5 devices. Any ideas?
Awesome video. Learned lots. I wish you would keep your computer screen live so we can digest the data while you are talking. You can be live as well but just in a small portion of the screen.
Wonderful job on this video. Simple and to the point. Thank you so much, so excited to use this at work. Note - Teleport icon reminds me of "Tie Fighter". Cool :)
Super concise video and really REALLY good for Unifi newbies like me. Makes me feel a lot more confident setting up my new home network now. Thank you so much.
I am curious about one thing, why did you set your switch to an external DNS instead of using the gateway for DNS? It would be the same outcome but you would be making sure all traffic is going over your gateway.
That was a very informative video. I setup my home network based off of that video. I have a few questions that hopefully you can help me with. I have a bunch of wired ioT devices and want to know if I need to or should do anything with Tagged Vlan Management for those ports? Also which Vlan would you recommend putting the kids gaming devices on. Thank You
Random question, I just installed dream wall using starlink for internet, put the starlink into bridge mode and had nothing but issues due to latency and constant disconnects. Finally found on a forum that apparently this happens and to add a unmanaged switch between starlink and Dreamwall. This has actually fixed it but I'm curious to know if you guys have come across this issue before?? And why would a switch miraculously fix it?
Great video. I followed along to setup my home Unifi network. FYI I believe "ultimate" is misspelled in your thumbnail. You should be able to replace that.
I am not able to change Ip and DHCP in network This mesgs appear on the window says that ∆ Ip addresses and DHCP must be configute on your third-party gateway For a full-feature experience, consider using a unfi OS console that comes with integrated gateway functionality. Please guide.
This is awesome... Do you have a video on choosing the VLAN for devices?? ie. I don't know what to do with my printer and Synology NAS. Are they IoT devices, or Main. Currently my NAS is a FileServer on the Main VLAN, but what if I want it Internet facing for a Minecraft Server and Web Server
Best Introduction Video I has seen so far for Unifi. Great Job! What would be interesting to see how to setup for me would be how to setup two separate VPNs, one for P2P activity and one to connect to internal resources from outside, as well as how to apply those VPNs application or device based. Additionally would be interesting how to set routes for app with several requirements. Like how to route traffic via a Pi-Hole in the System, route individual wifi over VPN or also even only certain applications with defined ports. Thank you!
Is zero touch possible with this gear? Like Grandstream, Engenius, Meraki, etc.? I want to cloud manage and configure the gear before it gets connected and then let it download firmware updates and configurations.
Great video, I am still a bit confused with my upcoming setup. It's a small office 1000sqft split in 3 areas but open space. I was putting together my setup and ended up over $1000 which I think is a bit overboard, I just want (3) indoor cameras, poe. I have fios gbit coming and running my lines next week, so I was curious if you can provide any suggestions. No doorbels neded just 3 cameras (was thinking 2k torrents) and thats about it, would like 24hr recording and only need 7-10 days storage, specifically the mvr option as im abit confused there, would the $99 option work in my scenario? I appreciate the help!
Amazing! I assume virtual networks can’t see devices in eachothers networks? So you connect an IoT device specifically to a wifi linked to the IoT network so it’s split from the rest to sniff the network?
thanks for the info.... I recently installed a UDM pro but have an issue every time my internet goes out, after it comes back on I have to power cycle the UDM pro to get it to start flowing traffic. Is there a setting I missed?
I didn't see it mentioned, but the individual AP settings are also important. Output power, channel selection, and RSSI all play a part in allowing your devices to achieve high throughput and seamlessly roam between APs
Amazing video, thank you! What's the reasoning for setting the switch's DNS to Cloudflare rather than 10.69.1.1 and centrally control/monitor things there (with its upstream being Cloudflare)?
Do you have to change the DNS servers at the Internet WAN settings and at the individual network settings? When it's set at the WAN is that a global setting?
I am setting this up so that it is hosted on my own computer for a residential wifi setup in my house. I absolutely cannot log into the monitoring software. I have the Unifi Network Server window up and it says 8.2.93 is started and I can manage a server in browser, but I then cannot get logged into the software no matter what. I've been working on it for hours. Does anyone have any ideas of what I'm missing? Thanks.
Im pretty new to networking, my understanding isn't that strong but im trying to learn fast. I have a question about the DNS section at 18:50. i have an inherited AD DNS (with a custom IP). The domain is only set to one particular room (30 pc's) in my network, every other device connected to the UDM is outside of the domain. What exactly does it do when i add the DNS IP in there ( in DNS Server 1)? And if i put something like Google DNS in DNS Server 2, would that act as a fail over if DNS Server one becomes unresponsive? If i left it on Auto, would i still have access to the domain? (i set the forwarders in the AD DNS to the same gateway as the UDM). Lastly if for whatever reason the DNS server dies, it should only affect the 30 pcs on the domain? I hope my questions made sense.
Great tutorial. Will love to see a part-2 for Firewall settings specially blocking Security and IoT network from landing into the UDM login gateway portal.
Im planning my network for my new house, and your video helped me a lot for the setup as i learned a lot about networking. Just ordered udm pro and 2 u6 pro ap. Can you please make a video including nas ( in my case DS224+ ) with firewall rules and how to setup vpn ( i guess) to connect to nas from outside?
ask, I have 2 unifi, one I set up a long time ago, then the other is new, when I connect to the same network with the same unifi account, why does it become mesh after adoption, so what happens so it doesn't mesh? even though I have turned off mesh in my settings.
Just sub'd for this video! I have similar setup and it seems I configed it quite good comparing it with your guide! Learned a few things as well! What I would love you see in a Future video is this: I have a server subnet with an ASUSTOR NAS in it. I want to backup my NAS over the internet (r-sync protocol) to another ASUSTOR NAS at my sister her house. So what unifi hardware is needed with my sister her house and how to configure the vpn between those 2 devices so that the backup of my NAS is encrypted while going over the internet to the other NAS at my sister. I'm Dutch speaking so excuse me trying to explain it ... 😅 Greetz from Belgium
Hey, thank you!! And that should be made relatively simple with Unifi’s site magic. It will automatically create the VPN connection and do most of the heavy work. But Ubiquiti cloud gateways also support a range of other VPN protocols so you don’t need to have Unifi gear on the other end. For a small deployment a UniFi express gateway is perfect as well as a Dream Router!
I had this rpi with pihole and wireguard setup once and use the wireguard app to get back home. But i've set it up years ago via a lot of YT vids so can't remember how i did it hehehehe 😅 Let alone installing an rpi at my sister her house and setting up that with their stock ISP modem/router... So be free to upload a vid on how to setup 2 unifi devices creating backups over internet 😊

You have 11 APs in your house? o.o Do you have a Ap per room or do you live in a mansion ? xd

We use Sophos firewall as core network, we have cloud key gen2 and 14 unifi APs?? now please suggest how can I use Unifi Gateway in this network.
Can you route multiple VLANs through the same AP?
Thanks for this great video. Helped me a lot to understand my network controller better.
This is an excellent video. Exactly what I was looking for to learn about UniFi.
This was the best video i've seen about this gear! Good Job guys!
Amazing video, thank you! What's the reasoning for setting the switch's DNS to Cloudflare rather than 10.69.1.1 and centrally control/monitor things there (with its upstream being Cloudflare)?
Awesome video, now I feel ready to set up any WLAN network.
Could you please explain how to rename the default network now that the legacy interface option is no longer available? Thanks in advance.
Gateway connects you to other networks, not necessarily the internet, right?
Great video! Thank you for making it - it certainly helps with setting up these devices!
Great tutorial.
The only part that had missing details was the selection of port on the switch.
This video is super cool! I've learned a lot, many thanks for making it!
Great Video, Just curious if you can do the same with a Cloud gateway Ultra vs a UDM Pro. Thanks
Great video! I've learned a lot from this. I would like to see a video clarifying the set inform process and how/why to use it.
great video. Do you guys work with networks that have Control4 in them for Home automation?
Do you plan on making a more in depth video on firewall rules? Including VPN firewall rules?
Great video, I feel like I really screwed up on security. What do you think about PIA as a VPN provider?
Great content and extremely easy to digest, even for an IT expert, looking to check out UniFi offer. Keep up good work.
This is an amazing video. Thank you for this excellent presentation!
Love the Apollo Saturn V rocket in the background😎.
+1 on the "Apollo was in '69, so subnet is .69" meme! :)
ask, I have 2 unifi, one I set up a long time ago, then the other is new, when I connect to the same network with the same unifi account, why does it become mesh after adoption, so what happens so it doesn't mesh? even though I have turned off mesh in my settings.
Well done, great presentation and clear instructions.
This video is so good. I wish I could like over 100 times. Thanks a lot for this.
Just sub'd for this video! I have similar setup and it seems I configed it quite good comparing it with your guide! Learned a few things as well! What I would love you see in a Future video is this:
I have a server subnet with an ASUSTOR NAS in it.
Greetz from Belgium
Hey, thank you!! And that should be made relatively simple with Unifi’s site magic. It will automatically create the VPN connection and do most of the heavy work. But Ubiquiti cloud gateways also support a range of other VPN protocols so you don’t need to have Unifi gear on the other end. For a small deployment a UniFi express gateway is perfect as well as a Dream Router!
I had this rpi with pihole and wireguard setup once and use the wireguard app to get back home. But i've set it up years ago via a lot of YT vids so can't remember how i did it hehehehe 😅
Let alone installing an rpi at my sister her house and setting up that with their stock ISP modem/router...
So be free to upload a vid on how to setup 2 unifi devices creating backups over internet 😊
