Love your point on just ignoring ways to "optimize the process". Sometimes optimized is just less fun, less painterly even and you just paint slower because it sucks. Sometimes "ineffecient" keeps the brush moving.
great video so important to play around and not be to strict. i find basing pulls an army together so much that you can have that freedom to play around.
Absolutely. The whole “stick to a uniform color scheme” idea is not just overrated but sometimes outright bad. If the army is a strictly regimented professional force, then sure, it makes sense for them to mostly look alike. Even so, taking an ornamental spot color and applying it on a unit’s glowing magical flame just raises questions. Did they coordinate those back at the HQ? Which came first? A lot can be done to tie the army together with a) basing theme, and b) general painting style. A) basing doesn’t have to be identical. As long as it’s on theme. They can be the same texture paste and the same grass tufts for every mini, but units that might have more of a urban warfare look can be staining on slate with rubble while regular infantry is on the texture past. You can tie it together more with the same color dust for instance. A forest theme can have bases varying from ancient temple to bushy undergrowth and still work to pull the army together into a cohesive whole. B) if the styles matches no one will bat an eye at one unit being bright red while another is khaki camouflage. You’ll just assume the units have different history and purpose. After all they are all edge highlighted in the eavy metal style, or all look very painterly, etc. And you should still feel free to break these guidelines if there’s a good reason for it. Just paining the base rim the same color does a lot of heavy lifting.
Huh, I would have imagined Vince's office to be as clean as Hannibal Lecter's kitchen. Also, always cool to see your gaming armies grow, I think they are my favourite of your videos.
Good job there,Scott! I like how they pop out! Probably would have gone for khaki hair but in the end they look exactly right for your army abf fit in perfectly.... you rule breaking savage!
Hey man. It’s actually a wonderful technique to dry brush and glaze over it. It does result in a smooth finish. It’s actually my preferred method for flesh tones.
12:50 the beauty of art…aah, yes! I loved this ! I’ve been implementing more artistic approaches when painting minis versus “painting minis to make them look badass” so my pink and teal space marines successor chapter will prevail!
3:02 Because it conforms to the mini more easily, a sponge will take off the oil paint from the inside the details more easily than a q-tip will. You could give a q-tip a try next time to compare.
I was watching these progress on your patreon, and i wasnt sure about them, but seeing them woth the other models and in more detail i actually really like them!
Loved the trolling. Made me laugh out loud. Something I would love to see in your videos is a side by side comparison, on the pallet or on the side, of the brown/white/orange mixes. They're such small areas on the model it's hard to see clearly
Could you do a video just strictly on how you use your airbrush? Like distance to spray from, how to mix paints, inks, so on and how you have your needle and trigger adjusted? maybe also how you pull the trigger. It may seem like an odd request but im having issues using mine.
This was unexpectedly morale raising, i feel less awkward for my lack of mini painting knowledge. Thank you for that. I will consider acquiring equipment from your brand. Best regards from your dota friend!
Pretty sure I'm starting a Daughters of Khaine army and this is some good inspiration for how to tackle the idea I have for a late 80's/early 90's theme of that Jazz/various neon geometric patterns that were on all sorts of nylon clothing. Mortahi and her mall snakes roaming the battlefield and breaking/taking hearts.
I wonder if you could just contrast + the skin and then pin wash with a bright pale yellow oil wash to get a similar skin effect. I think your dry brushing actually does a good job at darkening the edges near the inner glow and that helps them pop so I don't know you could skip that step
The problem with contrast is that it does the opposite of what the oil wash is trying to do. It might be hard for an oil wash to cover up the darkness completely and be bright
They do stand out a lot, but imo with a little bit of a blue highlight on the bikers visors, and maybe just a bit more intensity in the blues of the other models, I'd reckon they'd tie in a lot better while still being the eyecatching standouts they should be. Not to backseat scott, the miniature maniac himself, of course, this is just my opinion. Always love examples of fire being painted, still trying to make how fire looks stick in my brain, and the fire here is especially impressive for the required effort!
Hey Miniac, I’m interested, in the closing of the video you show three models, the middle one with a big flame ‘cloak’ they’re casting. I’m curious why you chose to go with orange with that rather than the blue flames you did elsewhere. Looks great, just thought it was interesting!
Honestly, I should've gone with the blue flame. At the time I hadn't made a choice about what color the fire was going to be and I didn't even know that was supposed to be fire. It seemed like more skin, haha.
What book was that that showed how to paint different skin shades for the mandrakes? My apologies if that’s an obvious answer… I’m new to the Warhammer world and I’m currently working on getting my Drukhari Army together. I’ve been wanting to do my own paint scheme, but need a bit of help with direction still.
Ur kt looks dope, u made it easy to copy ur stiel/technic, just wish u made time stamps with the used colors( for trying ur thing out in the most fast/easy way)
I came to a similar conclusion with my mandrakes! The secondary colour of my army is red, so I painted them dark red like hot embers, and then did their leggings in a bone/cream (like the army primary), but with green lowlights which dont appear anywhere else to give them that ethereal vibe. That simple inversion makes them stand out as different but still clearly part of the team.
They look sensational and go with your army!!! I mean if you wanted to knit-pick you could always do the colour of the incubi tabard into the kimono pants folds of the mandrakes? But it really isn’t needed it all is so cohesive as!!
wait, where did you get that Pk-Pro brush and the bottle of Kraut-Tac from??? (I am surprised as I am located in Germany and thought they do not send/distribute world wide). Enjoy the stuff!
... couple of minutes later in the video you told it. But one thing I observed is, that I think you used the Kraut Fixer as the "glue" (and mention it is not strong enough), though actually it is intended to first use the KrautTac (which stays sticky) and then finally - after the basing material - you drop on the Fixer. cheers.
I think I’ve restarted my Horus heresy blood angels scheme 3 or 4 times now. I can relate heavily to getting stuck in the testing process - very painful lol
I freakin' loved it. It made me rewatch all the Alien movies again as well as many of the shorts. I'm super into the Alien franchise right now and it's all thanks to Romulus, although Alien and Aliens are very special movies.

hey i have that shirt, great to see another miniac fan in the wild
YOOOO, Miscast, so cool to see you on an unrelated to your channel theme video in the wild.
Yo, it's Miscast!
Smear Campaign was great, icing on the cake was dog randomly licking the chair🤣
also fantastic paint job!
Vince having reverse TP rolls is peak villain energy and I'd expect nothing less.
Never thought I'd see a group paint sesh with a bunch of dope TH-cam painters. Vince is the goat IMO and deserves more subs.
Regular uploads is going to be a great thing

Enjoying the uploads scott. Please do a video on your wood elves for the old world
Fantastic fantastic fantastic transitions and editing 3:38
I like them. I think they go along fine. I appreciate seeing your wet blending on the flames. I've always struggled with wet blending.
Its actually fitting in perfectly fine with the rest of the minis. Nice job!

7:35 Round peg…Circular hole…? I’m not seeing the problem here.
oops
@@Miniac to be clear, I enjoyed the video and I’m a long time fan. I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to razz you a bit.
I appreciate the moment of clear candor and honesty around dry brushing. Thanks for being a real human yo. Gunna be picking up your cutting mat.
Got my cutting mat! Proudly center stage on the hobby desk!
Elminiturista was my inspiration for figuring out how to paint well, really nice to see Juan get a shout out. :D
"crop dusting the white paint" made me nearly choke on my coffee. You have an incredible turn of phrase, dude.
I love the new schedule and and video type. Seems like you found a good groove to me.
Also, the Mandrake look great in the army. Really excited to see the finished project.

I'm glad I am not the only one who's paint scheme and method evolves as I paint thru the army.
Happens to me too. I figure it means I learned something, which is a good thing.

Not a bad idea, I'll toss it on my list
Hahaha that dog licking and your face got me - proper guffaw
That cut to the airbrush room and ending with that dog licking,,,,,,laughed way too hard and woke up my household.
I love the bright colours you used, it gives the clan a very "Moebius" look
Whilst I'm very much a beginner, I love seeing the skills and listening to your artistic philosophies that underpin them.

Perfect timing for sucha video I was looking at how to make glowy part on my Avatar, Thank you
Always informative videos, speeds up my trial and error / learning with miniatures
Sick edit pulling out from the video to your editing desk!

@07:27 You would think that the *round* peg of a paint scheme would fit the *circular* hole of a model like no other

Loving seeing you more often Scott! ❤
These look great! They are a nice little highlight unit and give you some freedom in the future for a leader character. :D
Exactly right!
You're right... But now I'm curious to see what the other models would look like with small neon blue flames occasionally 😅
Maybe a little basing element??
What a bad ass army concept. Thanks
I love this idea.
I plan to do this with my pathfinders in my tau army. (Paint them green instead of the red farsight enclaves colors)
Great video, love the scheme.
Love the colour scheme looking very cool. Seems like the detail on the faces is not really showing through.
.... Scott, did you play the guitar intro, and outro..
💜👍🎃
haha, sadly no
