Alex you are easily the funniest dry-comedy painter on this platform. I also really appreciate the slower and more considered (for lack of a better term) pace of your videos. AND there happens to be lots of very relevant painting advice. Just good job all around sir. And very nice looking works at the end of this process!
I find the cinematography of your videos incredibly satisfying. Its something hard to describe, but it just oozes quality and its clear a lot of effort went into getting this aesthetic. Its like watching a mini(pun intended)-documentary.
This is what you do best Alex, a topic to get us thinking! I paint a lot with transparent paints over a couple of base colours on the mini so this is right up my street.
Seeing those skintones in the context of the fully painted mini really does make a huge difference! I wasn't really sold on the effect until they were done, but that's pretty impressive when the final mini is complete. I wonder what kind of neat things we can do with other color skin tones....
I know.. I always find minis are difficult to paint until they are done.. What I mean is, it's difficult to get a grasp until most things are in place.
I deeply appreciate your perspective and help. Hoping to be the proud leader of an Orcish warband in Warcrow this year. Have attempted a magenta contrast paint base with thin layers of Nurgle’s Rot over it. Did not know going in that the technical paint would add a slimy gloss finish but hopefully matte varnish knocks that back a bit. Little adjustments aside: I am enamored of this approach and its results. Thank you very much.
I'm thrilled that you're painting some more Warcrow models on the channel. The Varank skin changers are some of the coolest looking minis I've seen in a skirmish game in a while and it's neat seeing them in a green>red skin tone rather than the avatar-esque teal on the box art.
I LOVE THIS, I've been using burgundy red as the base coat for green skin for a while now, building up on top of red undertones to give that blood under the skin warmth in the painting. I'm going to keep going in this direction you're talking about because these results were stellar!
i've been watching hundreds of painting videos, yet to put paint to plastic, and very few get me super motivated and in the "hey, i can do this" mindset this is one of those videos - going to give the magenta a go, cheers!
Myself being an Orc / Ork painter for over forty years have found this video very informative and entertaining. Alex I love the work you do and I always knew you were a greenskin at heart. Keep being Orky. WAAAGH da it’s Orktober.
Saved thos video, loved the principles you were showing, i find painting skin very hard but this is a great way for me to approach skins going forward. Great video and delivery as always
One of the only codex style books I've kept from older editions is the Warmachine book for the faction The Retribution of Scryah, an elf faction that has a really beautiful sort of teal and green thats made by mixing in burgundy for the shadows. The PP method is applied quite differently to this, but the idea ends up in a similar space, with those rich interesting hues. This green glazing method is another great tool for my toolbox, and the video is masterfully made as always
Another brilliant video Alex, would love to see more tutorials about your painting style. Especially with orc themed. Also, I’ve always loved your videography style, very unique, makes you stand out from the crowd. Keep up the amazing work, can’t wait for the next episode. 👍
You know what's funny. Forever I hated green and was a fan of blue. Until I started painting. Now it's probably one of my favorite colors to use when painting. Anyhow. Great video. Will certainly give me ideas for the future.
I used a similar technique like this for zombies. Started with a Vallejo Gray Green (the pale one) and went over that in patches with Warpaints pearl skin and then washing it with a mix of reikland flesh shade, wargames strong tone and lamian medium mixed in about equal parts (maybe a touch more medium) its gives a nice gradient of skin going from 'Hey that looks a bit pale to be healthy' to ' lord why is your skin going greenish translucent?'
Gotta agree with the comedy comments others are mentioning. You keep improving on each video. Lighting and video angles always on point! Excellent video, thanks! Happy Orctober!
Happy Orctober! I don’t paint Orcs (or Goblins, Trolls, Elves) but your magic with green just might work elsewhere. I’ll give it a go! Loved the video of course. A great treat on a Friday. 👍.
Well, I just stumbled on your channel and have subscribed as you are both entertaining and informative - a few painters like yourself have made me think more about colour theory and using a wider palette - loved your techniques and ideas!
In the last video the fact that Citadel paints didn't cover well, turned out to be a feature, instead of a bug, because you discovered a way of painting skin that you liked. I mean you can always thin paints to make them not cover well, but experimenting can help with discovering stuff like this.
First of all, love your work. While I don't always agree with stuff you do, there are things to be learned by watching. But I did laugh when you said back to school. In six years of high school my classes were never given instruction on colour theory or mixing colours. My Ork skin starts Rhinox Hide, Dark Angels green, Emerald green and a nice light green with a yellow tint. So as a member of the not everyone, gimme the technique, I'll choose the colours.
I’m not really understanding your comment. Are you saying I should stop explaining my techniques to people because you didn’t learn a thing about colour theory in high school? I’m not offended, I’m just not understanding the sentiment :)

@@52Miniatures Mighty kind of you. It's a curious thing, if the video's title was 'Why doesn't everyone paint Orcs like this?' then it would sound fine. 'Does not' just reads strangely despite technically being correct. The comment was meant to be tongue in cheek rather than critical. I'm glad you (hopefully) took it that way. Ps Good work, lovely stuff, keep it up.
@@paddya3304 Trying to get people to click videos is surprisingly difficult. A subculture seems to have been created that does not engage in videos that say "I found a neat way to paint orcs".
