    I will note that pan being light and free moving will absorb some of the energy from the pellets in its movement. However, I appreciate this test. I have a story for you from 53 years ago.
    A COBRA IN MY HOUSE
    When living just outside Selma, Alabama in 1965 . I was 14. My father had married a waitress named Maude. She was a homely looking woman resembling a man more than a woman or maybe more like an ox. She was stout with a prominent mustache. We lived in an old but stable white house with an orchard in the back including a large lemon tree. Father still sold house insulation and would be gone for days or weeks at a time. Maude would always go with him along with her chihuahua dog.
    While they were away, I went to school by bus, came home, did my school work and busied myself sculpting clay into animals like cobras, elephants, dogs, gorilla head and the like. I then painted them with oil paint to look more real. But I found that the paint would never dry because of the oil in the clay. I also painted landscapes and drew caricatures of students at school which I sold for $5 each.
    Another pass time I had was watching TV and shooting the mice and much larger rats that ventured to find food in the house. I had a pump BB gun which did the job quite well.
    I could see the living room, dining room and the kitchen from my perch on the couch. So when one came sneaking in, it would stop for an instant next to a wall by the doorway, POW!! I got it. I disposed of it outside and then waited for the next. One night I decided to see what would happen if I placed my clay cobra in there. I placed it where most of the rats made a fast dash through the dining room. Then I waited. Sure nuff, a good sized rat came to the edge of the door, it looked around and made its fast dash across the room. Suddenly it ran right into the cobra. The rat leaped high in the air doing a somersault in the air as it came down and hit the floor. Its legs were moving so fast that it was sliding on the floor and it knocked the cobra over with it landing on the rat. It was on it’s back with legs running as fast as it can and squealing. Never knew a rat could squeal that loud. ……. Then silence. I went over to see the rat with paint all over it and the floor. I picked it up by the tail. It was very dead. I thought it died of fright.
    I threw it out with the others. I was pleased I had created an effective rat killer.
    So I repainted the cobra and set him up again. The next rat was frighten away by it in time. So, POW!! I got him. I killed three rats that night.
    When I went to bed I left the cobra in the same place just outside the kitchen door in the dinning room and went to bed, then fell fast asleep.
    Around 3 AM I was suddenly waken by a loud scream and a bang, bang, bang. Jumping up and running to the dinning room, I saw my stepmother standing on a chair screaming and my father with his 32 snub nose pistol pointing at my now destroyed cobra.
    I cannot forget the look on my dad’s face as he was bent over looking at the dead cobra, then turning his head to look at me, while still bent over with his mouth wide open. He was stuck between being mad at me because of the damage to the hardwood floor, the extreme fear, and the plain funniness of the situation. He finally started laughing while Maude was still standing in the chair now screaming at me.
    My father always scoffed at my art as a waste of time but still bragged to others when we had his friends over time to time. He told this story over and over while drinking with a friend at home. It was funny watching him re-enact it while somewhat drunk. I was afraid that he was going to shoot somebody during the act.
    By the way, I did get into trouble, but mostly because Maude wanted my art out of the house because it ’stunk’. The oil paint had linseed oil and turpentine in it.
    I wish I had Plaster of Paris back then.
    The BB gun even then was a fairy dangerous 'toy' that require a certain amount of knowledge and respect. Air guns of today have much more accuracy and power. I have several from cheap to $600.00

    You should add chronograph readings to the videos, in the ballistic world there is a well known saying, speed beats armour, the lightweight polymer pellet was the only one that went through

      I remember when I tried out my Beeman R1 springer in .177 cal with a pointed tip pellet on a steel warehouse roll up door.
      The pellet went clean through and revealed sunlight. The pellet was coming out of the muzzle at over 1000 fps with a crack sound.

    A bit of a long winded intro but a good informative video, worth the wait . I remember the original sabot type of pellet, they were called Prometheus. They had excellent close too mid range penetration but due to their light weight they lost energy quickly at longer ranges.

      Not in my mind. With the pan not fully secured it absorbs most of the energy when it is impacted and moves thus less penetration. Mount the pan solidly and do a test comparison. I feel there will be a definitive result in accurate tests. Just saying.

  • @freddyflintstoned913
    @freddyflintstoned913 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If you had secured the pan so its movement would not have taken energy by moving you would have better penetration. I love penetration.

    Gold Flight Rounds out of any air rifle that shoots them over 1200 FPS can be used for home protection especially the 22 Cal Red Flight Rounds that I tested on a old steel anmo can at 10 feet it went through both side of the steel ammo can and then it went a quarter of a inch into a oak wood table at around 1500 FPS, Red Flight Rounds traveling that fast and at that range would most likely stop a criminal intruder if not drop them in their tracks!

    The Crosman Goldflight are replicas of the design by Skenco. The Skenco pellets have or used to have a zinc core, they did when introduced many years ago and probably still do

    I'd like to see what happens to the frying pan. when the pan is not so loose, when it's firmly planted.
    With the pan firmly placed all the energy would be shown in the dent may or the penetration rather than the pan being thrown around

  • @harryzero1566
    @harryzero1566 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have experimented similar trials using sub 12ft lb air rifles. I found that a .177 steel bb superglued to a .22 crossman hollow point made a neat hole in a 1mm+ steel panel. The pellet itself did not pass through though. I came to the conclusion that this exercise has only ballistic benefits if you used a .25 pellet in a 20ft lb plus power air gun. Modifying .22 pellets and even adding a dieseling effect to achieve greater penetration is counterproductive. Loss of accuracy and even the remote possibility of damaging compression seals makes these modifications pointless. I have also use steel tipped polymer pellets, but found then to be disproportionately too expensive. Just choosing a pellet that suits your barrel and maybe choose a harder composition is the optimum choice.

    • @harryzero1566
      @harryzero1566 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes please to that, but also using a .177 Steel bb glued to a .22 hollow point. A nice neat hole from the BB with the pellet left behind. Then try using a little methanol behind the pellet skirt. The second methanol pellet seems to have more impact than the first. Methinks their is some vapour residue left from the first that seems to have a turbo charged effect on the second.

    Nice vid ill watch a few more I d be interested what a .22 does since air rifles aren't regulated here. When want a wolverine 303 or an Airforce Texan here you don't need any permit. Just show ur id and it's yours. Personally I won't shoot an air rifle above .22 should get a fire arm license if you want that kind of force behind the projectile. Dennis Quackenbush makes big bores up into the 500 foot-pound category those are also legal here. Abit crazy......... Anyway that's the law here.

    This is a good experiment. but now can you do an accuracy test of the above. Power is no good unless it groups well. That's why most just stick to pellets that are accurate like JSB, Air Amrs round head ect.

    • @TinyBallisticsLab
      @TinyBallisticsLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could not agree more! Even though I love marksmanship as a sport, I'm working on a rig that will hold the airguns in a consistent and repeatable way so I can start providing good objective data on pellet accuracy. Indeed I extended the ballistic test range to 13ft just the other day for upcoming accuracy tests!

    • @airgunsniper-elite7385
      @airgunsniper-elite7385 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that. You have a great channel here that is well worth a look at. Back here in the UK we have to make due with sub 12 ft/lb air rifles, and require a firearm permit for anything above that, which has to be for a good enough reason. As we are not used to the full power airguns like in America, it may be a good test to show us just what the penetration power is like, say through a standard pinewood door of 2 inches thick, at various ranges? Keep up the good work.

    • @joesurfer9754
      @joesurfer9754 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your "good reason" is the fact that your country is being turned inside out and destroyed by a Muslim invasion of rapist's from north Africa. The first step to your Tyrannical government and the coming sharia law was to disarm the population and then have the disarmed people come on the internet and brag about how great it is to be defenseless.

    • @airgunsniper-elite7385
      @airgunsniper-elite7385 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's been like this since 1968. It's a bloody joke. As far as being invaded by muslim extremists, that's just one reason that most of us voted out of the European Union, we've been ruled by an unelected dictatorship for too long. The politicians and media are shocked, because none of us decided to continue with the way things are. Apart from that though, this is a great youtube channel. keep up the good work Tiny Ballistics Lab.

    Cerebral Air-gunning, that's enough for me to subscribe. Have you considered using an airgun that will produce less velocity deviation to insure consistency within a test scenario? Would a regulated PCP will give you more reliable numbers? I haven't seen your other videos yet, so perhaps you are already using other platforms. Anyway, looking forward to more videos and if I think of any suggestions for ballistic testing I won't be too shy to chime in. Cheers and all the best!

    The softness of the pellets have nothing to do with why they didn't penetrate. The velocity does. Shoot them at a higher velocity and they will penetrate. Lead bullets go through thick steel all the time, as long as the velocity is high enough.

      @3dprintingandairguns668 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even lead core bullets don't compete with fully copper bullets when it comes to depth of penetration. I has to do with how quickly your projectile looses mass upon impact. Both deform similarly but a lead core will only retain about 60-70% of its mass in fragmentation, whereas a fully copper bullet will retain in the high 90%s. Yes both types of bullets will shoot through some steel, but how much steel? Armour piercing rounds generally have a tip or core made of a very hard material such as tungsten.
      Pellets are not bullets. They are designed to fly in the 350 to 1100 fps range, and loose energy quickly. If you shoot supersonic the pellet will generally tumble when it slows below the sound barrier. If you shoot a lead pellet at wood or similar material it will penetrate a little and retain all of its mass because the velocity is not enough to fragment the lead, like this pan where a dent was achieved, that allows the pellet to retain its mass. If you shoot lead pellets upwards of 900 fps at a target that they achieve no penetration, .25" plate steel, if you can find it, it will turn into a pancake that is much lighter than the original pellet. Just like you would if you shot your 30'06 at a tank.

      Interesting! Gold Flights don't appear very aerodynamic (shallow conical tip and low density) so I bet it slowed down considerably at the end of that 25 ft. I will be testing the drag coefficient of several pellets very soon so I will be putting that idea to the test! Thank you for watching!

    Your losing power by not holding the pan securely If all that torque is harnessed ,More penetration is gained. Cheers bto...also what is the fps of your rifle.........

    I have a small problem with the measurement in thickness of the pan. 1.35mm is the thickness of a dime. You are saying the pan is only about half of that. I think you misplaced your decimal or something. You mean 6.4 mm? Because if not, then that frying pan is nothing more than foil and your gun has no power.

    • @ColdieHU
      @ColdieHU 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      nah, that pan was no where near 6.4mm look at the footage. That is a toy pan. I wouldn't dare putting that on a stove.

    AND TRY IT WITH LEAD .22 AND .25 PLEASE
    THANKS!

    • @ATMBelgium
      @ATMBelgium 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. And what's more...
      This test is very badly executed. The one pellet that made it was aimed nearer the edge of the pan. The centre of the pan act as a spring. Nearer the edge the pan is stiffer, so there's little chance the pellets would bounce. That's the only reason that one pellet made it.
