I'm probably way outside your demographic (41 yr old British woman who's not super outdoorsy and has never tackled a major DIY project) but I have to say, I find videos like this fascinating. It's amazing what a bit of good old human ingenuity and elbow grease can accomplish!
Old woman who loves to learn things, even though I'd never use a saw mill, or do half the things you and Brooke do. You are so smart and clever and a joy to listen to! America needs more Dave Whipples!!!
Most guys would start by beefing up a trailer. Not Dave. He starts out radical and has to 'beef down' his trailer! Awesome stuff, looking forward to seeing it in action on another video!
Recycling, this is what it's all about. I would imagine the 70's former boat trailer even in it's purchased state was better made than anything today. Very cool!
If you had asked me twenty one-ish minutes ago, "What do you think the odds are of you not only watching but truly enjoying it while you do a video about a guy who is refurbishing a boat trailer into a sawmill trailer?"... I'd have laughed and said, "Not very good.". But... he we are twenty minutes-ish later and I not only watched that video but I truly enjoyed it while I did. Will I ever do anything even remotely like it? At this moment I'm going to say "chances are not very good" but... start back at the beginning of my comment to see how much weight that actually holds. Thanks again for another truly entertaining and informative video Dave. You always make my day brighter whenever I see you have a new one out.
Not a surprise to me. Dave makes excellent videos but ONLY when he feels like he has something worthwhile to share. I wish he made more of 'em but I have to respect his personal standards. Best wishes to you BobAshmore6422 !
Can't stop watching this channel, it's sort of simple but sophisticated at the same time but most importantly down to earth In a sense. Love seeing your work Dave
Your hat from Magnetwan, Ontario! Been there many times. Love this build and cant wait to see you cut and review the saw mill. As a forester I sure miss the bush and the work. Hello from Ontario, Canada.
I remember those trailers VERY well growing up! I doubt you could have done this project with what's made today! Great video, and of course, a great idea. I'll be very interested in seeing the review of the 2 different mills. I've got about 10 acres of trees I want to mill on my farm to build a couple homes and a new barn. REAL 2x6's are so much better than stuff we see in the Home Depot, and pay thru the nose for!
Dave, you're killing it known as "the master of repurposing products." I'm always told, "Throw that away!" I don't live in a throw-away society. But, I did smirk when you mentioned those clouds. It couldn't be a more perfect day! We thought we would see Brooke painting in the back since you mentioned the pretty Bob Ross type clouds! 😂 Keep on, keeping on!!! 👍💯
The weather “note” of the tornados tells me exactly when you were filming…just a week and a half before my wife and I came through your neck of the woods en route to the Soo on vacation. Glad you all were north of that mess….as for repurposing that old tandem-axle boat trailer as a sawmill trailer, that’s a stroke of frugal genius that would make Red Green burst with pride! Far more solid than just about anything that could be bought ready-made, and for mere pennies by comparison…..
Hey Dave I'm a professional fabricator welder I've been in the business for 15 years and I learned the most amazing tip of your video. I freaking love the way you used the magnet to hold your drill bits on the side of the trailer 🤯 absolute genius move. A little tip I can give you in return is trying to tighten up your arch length a tad aim for 1/4" to 3/8" max stick out also just be mindful of the old saying if it's got slag you need to drag i.e always weld with your torch pulling the weld along never pushing in front of you this should help you get a flatter more uniform profile👍
I just love this sort of stuff. Repurposing and re-machining what many would throw away for lack of knowledge and no lack of funds. Ingenuity comes from necessity without unlimited funds. Thank you.
I was especially interested in this video because my grandfather, my mom's dad, was a traveling lumberjack. He had a sawmill on wheels and a flatbed truck. Now I don't know if he made the sawmill himself or not, but he would lease wooded property for 1-2 years, cut trees, saw them into lumber, then move on. He did this in the 1930s and 1940s. Great job on your sawmill.
Who would have ever thought turning a boat trailer into a sawmill ingenious it sure looks fantastic will be useful in so many projects . great accomplishment .
I knew you had something cooking when you bought that welder and did the review. Awesome as always! Keep it up Dave. You are truly an inspiration to me and I’m sure so many others!
It’s nice to have the Michigan representation. There’s plenty of opportunities outdoors here for projects like this for someone willing to take the time. Thank you for your videos and passing on what you know and learned.
If some one told me yesterday, that tomorrow I would learn how to turn a boat trailer into a sawmill trailer - I never would have believed it! Your ingenuity never ceases to amaze. Thanks Bushy! ❤😁
Dave, I have this exact welder, as a certified welder from years ago, this welder is OUTSTANDING for the price, and is very light to move around. First time I used it, I was blown away at how well it worked. An absolutely terrific welder for about $200. I also bought the small welding cart as well, I think they're about $40 and a cheap self dimming hood from HF. Can't beat the setup for the $$.
Dave, love the stories you tell here. As an old welding instructor once told me - if you're new to welding, the best investment you can make is in a quality grinder and lots of discs. :)
Thanks Dave for another video. This old gal wont be doing a project like this, but im glad some might. Ive been enjoying Brook and Bella getting the coffee shop ready for business. And also Mick and his adventures and Brook's and your brothers channels. You all are just exciting to watch and learn. Thanks from Central Oklahoma
‘I don’t need to paint this bolt, it’s already green and rusty.’ 😂 Great video as always Dave. Since I’ve been following your channel I’ve taken my projects much more slowly and been much more forgiving of my progress. I buy less too. No out of stinginess but to see if I can do something with less or my existing tools. A lot of times I go to the hardware store and walk out without buying anything as I get the idea of how to do the job with less while there.
I've worked on vehicles, driven a 1930 tractor, raked winrows working on a ranch. I'm 73 soon. Love watching all the amazing and wonderful projects you two do. Thanks so much.
Dave, as a musician I have to say. The tracks you put on your video’s bring me to a mindset of John Denver. Whether you are trying to or not, you come as close as possible as re-creating the vibe Denver had with his season suite. I think it is beautiful and fabulous. If he is an inspiration of yours, please book some studio time and record this and publish it on your channel. Thank you for all you do. Peace.
You have the patience of Job, and insight of Solomon... I have never seen a portable band saw before. At 78, I am a bit old to handle one now, but wish I had known about them earlier. I will never use or do what you do, but I watch all your videos for the education and entertainment of each and every one...
Not too bad for shooting from the hip. Not too bad at all! Excellent work. Kinda broke my heart to see you taking apart an easy loader trailer because they work so well, but your end result is great.
As the world falls apart around me, I am shifting into a lifestyle more and more like you and your wife live. Make do and mend, buy used and on the cheap, and do for myself. Whether I look at it from a financial perspective, an environmental and sustainability perspective, or from a self-sufficiency perspective, it makes sense.
Thank you for teaching the ways of our or rather my own past. Growing up with wise as you are in a really simple lifestyle and making life work. Thanks for bringing me and all of us home to our childhood history. 😊💛😊
Hi Dave. I sure love your video's. I like the way you use what you already have to make your projects. Looking forward to see the finished product. Take care my friend.
I'm in plumbing school right now (ontario) and I did my first arc & fusion welding today in class. Ive been watching your videos for a while and it feels good to be around the same skill level as you for once LOL
My dad has had the same Wood Mizer saw mill for as long as I can remember. He uses the living hell out of it but also takes good care of it. It's still going strong.
Another great video. I love it when you show new videos about new stuff. It reminds me of my childhood sitting back and watching Bob Vila with my father.
Nice job on the trailer . One tip for ya is to keep the hand crank that was on the tongue of the trailer and make a bracket for the side of the mill (so it's taller than the log) and use the hand crank to help flip the log while milling the log. I used a can't hook for a while and the wench makes it so much easier with big logs.
This is a testament to the well practiced standards of yesterday. To have that quality of workmanship, which is still usable today, and repurpose the materials is amazing.
Your video kept me interested all the way to the end...even though I will never use anything of this nature. I always watch your work because you make it enjoyable and instructive no matter the subject. Your commentary though out the video is easy to follow and informative. Thanks.
Feel free to drag that puppy over to my new lot, south of Munising. I'll have tons of cedar. How can you guys survive without Ryan. Dude is everywhere.
Love it! Had this type of project in mind for a while now. I bought a HUD-Son Forest Equipment “Sawyer” bandmill a couple of years ago. Would like to make some changes. You’ve inspired me! Thanks for sharing Dave!
Dave has gotta be one of the best narrators there is, that voice is soothing kinda like Morgan freeman! Great build Dave! Looking forward to seeing the mill in action! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
Dave, been watching your videos for a few years, you inspired my wife and I to build our own off grid cabin here in northern Colorado. We bought the same saw mill and made our own lumber, paneling (from beetle kill lodge pole) and are now starting on the cabinets (aspen). Thanks for the inspiration! Jim
Always enjoy your videos.... good example of hard work and just figuring out how to make things work for you... look forward to seeing the sawmill in action.
A small fabrication tip: especially on custom builds like this it’s often best to get everything (or as much as possible) in place and tacked before actually welding. As the welds cool they can pull considerably and throw your square/flat way out of wack
2 years in the crate…I don’t feel so bad, I ordered a new Woodland Mills last June and it’s still in the crate in my shed too. I have collected all the steel to make a trailer, just clearing up other projects before building it. Thanks for the inspiration.
Loved this video! Loved the recyling of boat trailer and figuring out how to make the sawmill work. You are a Genius! Always love your videos~~from a 74 y/oGrama from S. California (Ohio born) 💚
Great video! One thing that will probably be an all together separate video will be going through inspecting (or replacing) the bearings, repacking them, and getting it ready for road service. You know how old boat trailers get abused for the season and parked for the rest of the year. Maybe you did this but I'd hate to see a bearing lock up and cause you issues! Dave just another fabulous video ideas You are truly a permaculture genius ie one of the permaculture principles is no waste I always thought of same idea I think you should write a book I will add to my library collection Need to see lot more videos please I wait eagerly Thanks
A video I particularly didn't care if I saw. No interest in a sawmill. But it's a video I needed to see. Perfect work lunch video to bring down the chaos and bring some peace. Dave if you picked stickers from a lawn I'd watch. Your story telling ability, the calm quiet of it just brings me joy. Mick and Belle have it to and I also enjoy their adventures as well. Thanks ❤

I got about 15 years on you @oldglamour and I love this too… so many ideas…. I need to learn to weld….
Well kids, I'm 66...lol...and I just enjoy watching how he fixes stuff and listening to his storytelling voice...which Mick definitely inherited ❤
Sorry, I don't speak "tea and crumpets"
Same!
@@Jeff-jg7jh you're 103? How was the depression?
Dave your voice over is the best. I can listen to you all day. Another great build, and a massive boost for your homestead.

This is going to be valuable to your family. I wouldn’t have had the vision to look at an old boat trailer and see a sawmill. Kudos.
Nice job. Folks probably don't realize all the edit time you had to put in for this, so here's to you for creating a smooth, easy watch.
Skootch……a DIY technical term…..only used by Master DIY’rs. 🤣😂 Thanks Dave, great content as usual.
thanks
I also like when he moves or cuts things, "just a fuzz." 😂

Your hat from Magnetwan, Ontario! Been there many times. Love this build and cant wait to see you cut and review the saw mill. As a forester I sure miss the bush and the work. Hello from Ontario, Canada.

This is going to be a good series. Looking forward to more episodes. We miss you, Dave. And I'm not alone.
Your welding talk sure did help me to go ahead and try welding and get my front gate up! Thanks..
A.ways good to see you Dave, you give us interesting videos along with great ideas.👍🇺🇲

You are such a handy man! I watch everything you put out.
I've wanted a welder for years to add to the shop.
Once it's wired up I'm getting one. You convinced me 100% I need one.
You are fearless. You figure out what you want to do and just do it. Very admirable.
thanks

I've really enjoyed it so far. I'm amazed at how well it works .....especially for someone with zero experience
Dave always enjoy your videos.
Thanks
I love retro fitting an old boat trailer....they always have a long tongue and tow, back up like a dream.
You're no dummy, but you are an intuitive genius! You have a great voice as well! 😊❤🙏

Thanks Dave. I always enjoy your videos. Your voice over style is really good.
I appreciate that!
Your welding has come along great. Getting better at it.
Very entertaining video! I’m always impressed with the content and quality of your videos. I can’t wait to see more content on the sawmill.

Hi Dave. I sure love your video's. I like the way you use what you already have to make your projects. Looking forward to see the finished product. Take care my friend.
Awesome video as usual. Couldn't agree more with what you said about welding. Just do it!! You'll get it in no time! So true!! Thanks for sharing.
I just got and assembled an lx 50 super along with a few friends. I love the idea of a trailer. Im gonna start lookin for one.
I'm in plumbing school right now (ontario) and I did my first arc & fusion welding today in class. Ive been watching your videos for a while and it feels good to be around the same skill level as you for once LOL
Dave , I just love the way you explain everything and make it so easy. ❤
My dad has had the same Wood Mizer saw mill for as long as I can remember. He uses the living hell out of it but also takes good care of it. It's still going strong.
I work for Wood-Mizer! Love to hear this!
Good job Dave that will work long as you can move it around to place to place love it from Steve c from the state of Oregon USA
Another great video. I love it when you show new videos about new stuff. It reminds me of my childhood sitting back and watching Bob Vila with my father.
Love your recycle/reuse videos, we think alike.
Nice job on the trailer . I actually PUT that crank on the trailer but didnt film it
You are so awesome 👍😎 and incredible. I appreciate everything you do. Your hard work and dedication is outstanding 💪👍
You look EXACTLY like a guy who knows what he’s doing! Great build! 😍🇨🇦
Love watching your videos. You are so talented. Amazing taking an old trailer and making a sawmill. Wow what an art.
Another fantastic video. Keep them rolling!
As always, thank you for the informative and entertaining video. You rock!
This is a testament to the well practiced standards of yesterday. To have that quality of workmanship, which is still usable today, and repurpose the materials is amazing.

Great idea using an old boat trailer there eh! Thanks for sharing
"I don't have to paint it to match, it is already green and rusty". I quite enjoy your videos thank you!
Can wait to see next video . Great job.
Welding needs to sound like bacon looking.
Combination of water to cool drill bits and oil to lubricant.
Another great video, Dave!! Thanks.
Jim
Good job Dave, happy sawing….😊
Outstanding Video. Look forward to the sawmill review. Keep up the great work.
Hey Dave, my goodness it is good to see you again! hope to see you more in the near future!
Always enjoy your videos.... good example of hard work and just figuring out how to make things work for you... look forward to seeing the sawmill in action.
You could probably cut grass with scissors and I would still watch.
Always a great time hanging out with narrator Dave. And Dave.
Cheers
LOL, thanks
I watch Off Grid Living an they are always using the mill. Can't wait to see yours in use. Thanks for sharing 🙏.
Great use of the old trailer. I've watched several bandsaw mills videos. But your portable is so cool.
That trailer is awesome Dave.. good job. Looks Tough..
Modifying something into something else you need is rewarding.
A small fabrication tip: especially on custom builds like this it’s often best to get everything (or as much as possible) in place and tacked before actually welding. As the welds cool they can pull considerably and throw your square/flat way out of wack
Amazing job and video
Cheers
you somehow make anything you do so captivating. love your stuff
2 years in the crate…I don’t feel so bad, I ordered a new Woodland Mills last June and it’s still in the crate in my shed too. I have collected all the steel to make a trailer, just clearing up other projects before building it. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'm still dealing with the PSTD of dealing with a boat trailer bearing issue last year...not to mention the IOU to my brother for the parts.
Great video .... again ;) thank you
Dave just another fabulous video ideas
You are truly a permaculture genius ie one of the permaculture principles is no waste
I always thought of same idea
I think you should write a book I will add to my library collection
Need to see lot more videos please I wait eagerly
Thanks
Fabulous idea - portable sawmill!! Great way to get it done for cheap!! Thanks Dave!
Nice build.
That will serve you well for years.
A video I particularly didn't care if I saw. No interest in a sawmill. But it's a video I needed to see. Perfect work lunch video to bring down the chaos and bring some peace.
