    I love when I see hip older ladies that have really stylish but nice items. Sunglass, handbags etc....they are usually things they've had for many years. I always picture myself as a hip/funky old lady that will want to still wear what I buy. If I can picture that I know its a worth while investment.
    I've also noticed I never sell or get tired of any designer item I've ever bought. The higher price you pay will help you to cherish it. 😊

    I'm disappointed with luxury brands right now, Chanel I'm sorry to say has very much declined in its quality and so has Louis Vuitton. I spent over $3-thousand U.S. Dollars on an Alma Bag only 4 months into having have purchased it I've already had problems with it. Where's the quality? Where's the investment ?? More like money down the drain. The Chanel Lambskin gets so much wear in tear so easily and for the OUTRAGEOUS PRICES! And that's that I totally baby my bags. You are so right Amy we are solely paying for the brand name, these brands have NO INTEGRITY!!!

    Amie, thank you for your videos. You are so well spoken and your taste is so wonderful, that each one is a real treat! A few years back, I began buying fewer, but higher-quality bags. I sold several bags and splurged on a luxury bag that gave me joy. The next day, while getting ready for work, I laid out my outfit and the beloved new bag on the bed as usual. Acting completely out of character, my cat jumped up on the bed and eviscerated my new bag! I realized that my newly-adopted rule of "buy the best quality you can afford" needed to be revised to " buy the best quality you can afford to lose".

    I'm sorry but it's outrageous. Is it worth the money? No. If people want one, just admit the foolhardy nature of the purchase and do you. Your choice. But there's absolutely no way to rationalize the "worth" of these bags. Chanel is swindling everyone. Also, these are so ubiquitous now that they're not even legitimate collectors items. They charge these amount because THEY CAN.

      Have you bought a Chanel before? My Coach bag cost a few hundred dollars and after 2 years it's almost unusable as it looks so worn and old. My Chanel bag still looks brand new after 2 years. It is indeed an investment and I'm confident I can pass it down to my daughter when I have one.

    • @ChaseAmie
      @ChaseAmie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      I think I said pretty much the same thing in the video? Albeit in a slightly less aggressive way haha. It's not swindling, it's market value. If people are willing to pay it, then that's how much it's worth.

    • @jnnlis
      @jnnlis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +ariel ....and there's that rationalization! Chanel marketing loves you lol. Keep sharing your testimonials.

    • @jnnlis
      @jnnlis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Chase Amie I didn't comment on what you did or didn't say in the video. I simply left a comment with my own take. If it's aggressive to suggest a 6k small leather bag is swindling consumers then I'm fine with the label.

  • @BugnLVoe

    Life is too short and if someone (ahemmyself) can't stop obsessing over a bag, I just buy it. I of course don't buy a bag for investment, I buy it for lust and use it until I move unto another obsession bag then I sell. I have lost a lot of $ on doing that but . . . it's my addiction. ~ XOXO

  • @rosecolouredglasses
    @rosecolouredglasses 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Vicious self-fulfilling prophecy of investment bags: Chanel et al increase price, consumers buy bags in fear of next prince increase, Chanel sees large demand then increases price and the cycle goes on.

    • @ChaseAmie
      @ChaseAmie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      haha, pretty much! And then occasionally Chanel will 'equalize' prices like they did in Asia just to keep us on our toes... (causing mass hysteria in the meantime!). It's definitely a roller-coaster ha!

    I've been buying designer goods for well over 10 years and totally disagree when people think they are investments (I don't know why the word investment is used so much to be honest when talking about these items is it to justify the goods?) totally agree when your talking about the problems of selling designer goods as I had terrible problems selling all my collection! And mainly Chanel! And lost mega amounts of money on them people really know how to scam genuine buyers on eBay these days and I just lost so so much! I do agree it's better to spend on one item rather than many! I sold all my collection and restarted and my collection now is hardly anything in size compared to what I had but I feel better with that!! Every bag now I take so much time buying and always compare to my fav bags and if I don't love themThen don't buy them and I forget the ones I nearly bought very quick and save my money! I have learnt to just understand my bags are for me and not to worry about investment etc it's how much you enjoy it that really counts. Sorry for the long comment I do love how your more honest about designer items then many. I adore your top also. Laura X

      I've also had many bad experiences selling on eBay - they are one of the worst platforms for sellers IMO. Sounds like you have a great system for buying bags now though! I need to try comparing everything to my jumbo and mini from now on :) xx

    I love how informed and informative you are on this subject Amie. It really makes your videos so much more enjoyable to watch. As someone who studies fashion history and theory as part of my PhD I've always been fascinated by Chanel, both the woman and the brand. I'd love to have a classic flap one day for my collection. I really appreciated your thoughts on how there are gorgeous bags at every price point and people should focus on adding bags to their collections that they truly love. I've been collecting Ted Baker bags for a few years now, usually buying during the summer or winter sales. Since each collection is a limited edition print I feel I'm getting something special that won't be available again in the future. Goodness knows what Chanel will cost by time time I can afford one, but it will still be worth it to me. :)

    Hi, Amie! 4000 pounds is about 4700 euro. That's the price I got my jumbo from Germany last year(and that's the price in Italy and Spain as well).So you guys in the UK actually had it much cheaper up to this point. In the rest of Europe there was a HUGE increase last spring and it was up to 20% for the Classic bags, but that increase didn't happen in the Uk. So now I guess they are making the prices the same for all Eropean countries. Damn, I didn't know it was cheaper, I would have bought it from England. Still think is worth it though.
    Keep up the good work, love your videos!!!

    Great informative video! I've been buying and selling handbags for over 15 years and still learned something new from this. The fact of the matter is if you have a purse addiction you may as well have it with a brand that retains its value. I recently tallied up all of the bags and SLGs that I've sold and it was over 60 items, all LV. Recently though I've realized I don't need more than 10 bags in my collection to make me happy. And like you my Chanel jumbo is at the top of that list.

    The classic reissue used to hold it's value well until a few years ago. Ugh Chanel, they are going crazy with their price hikes. Is it bad that I'm thinking about buying a backup jumbo because I know that by the time I need a new one the price is going to be too high.

    @haveguccipradawonttravelye2403 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    yes i agree its just a small strip of leather from a cow and a small gold plated cc so it has no major material value thats tangible. I think thats why some people get offended by people who wear them. The price has to cease increasing at some point because people wont want to pay birkin money thats hand made for chanel thats made in a factory production line by non artisans. I think £7k max and collectors will stop collecting unless they make close to £100k a year.

    Your video title made me nervous as I have a vintage Chanel jumbo on its way to me. Ive researched, look at them in person, followed pricing. Fact is it's just a ridiculous amount of money. YET-I've been saving and was ready. My thinking is I just get it rather than continue to look for substitutes for the Chanel bag which could lead to buying several bags that "aren't quite it" and still wanting the real thing. In the long run, I just might end up saving money :-). I know-my justification skills are getting a little out of control. Keeping my fingers crossed the vintage Jumbo thrills me and I keep it. Than you for your always excellent fun honest sensible videos.

    Enjoy your videos... when I was a young woman Chanel was my holy grail and did purchase the black caviar with gold hardware in jumbo. for a monumental birthday.... only to discover it was not a comfortable bag to carry... far too cumbersome. I have since accumulated an eclectic collection of beautiful “luxury”bags. But truly.. the only bags that are investment are the Hermès... my goodness if you looked at pre loved Chanel reissue they sell for half of retail...and the other flaps sell for below retail..not as much but it leads me to wonder how many ladies are actually able to recover what they paid ....or more..for their Chanel’s... buy to enjoy.. not for investment..keep enjoying these beautiful bags💐

    Great video as always Amie. I love hearing your opinions and you're so well spoken. I bought a classic woc exactly a year ago at £1260 and now it's £1470! I thought I'd feel good that I got it before but I'm actually appalled and annoyed for other customers. I always aspired to have a Chanel classic by the time I hit mid/late 20s but by then they will cost £5k plus your first born! I love Chanel but there are other brands. Good for everyone who can afford £10k for a bag but for me personally I wouldn't be able to spend that much even if I were a millionaire without major guilt. Just my thoughts :)

    I absolutely love watching your channel, you seriously inspire me so much, I've always had an obsession with designer brands (particularly Louis Vuitton) and plan to buy the Cabas Voyage men's tote and the Brazza wallet to start off my collection ASAP, but I've also been in a deep depression for several years (I'm nearly 20) which stopped me from working, I've been living on the government for the last 18 months since I moved out of home, but these past few weeks that I've started watching you, you've made me realize having Louis Vuitton items in my possession is very much so in my reach if I just put my mind to it, I'm now currently looking for a couple part time jobs or a full time job and have a few interviews within the next week and won't stop till I find a job, so thank you so much for making videos like these :)

    I'm a great believer in investment bags. When I've bought a second choice alternative I've never been truly happy with it. Russell and Bromley make nice bags and I'm a fan of Louis Vuitton. I love Chanel but tend to just buy their cosmetics or perfume as not in my earning bracket to buy their clothes shoes or bags. Great video x

    I love the Chanel flap, and someday I will get one. I think I'll buy used though. I feel like their quality has gone down hill in terms of materials, so if I am going to plunk down that much money I'll do it on an older bag from a time where they were still using nicer leather and metals. Chanel in general has been bugging me lately. The crazy price increases, the discontinuation of the classic eau de toilettes so they can force people to buy the eau de parfumes. The things they do don't make me feel very good about giving them my hard earned dollars.

    Surely no one will buy a preloved Chanel bag for more than the cost of buying a new one? So although they do hold a good resale value, it will always sell for less than you paid for it. ( I know that Hermes bags do not follow this rule however, due to the difficulty of buying a new one.)

    Amie, love you video. Your channel review something way different with others common review. Good job and keep moving forward :)
    My personal comment related to the topic :
    Chanel price is much higher than what i rationally can spend for a handbag 😭
    I dont know why, i just feel not worthed at all since my first visit to chanel store, touch and feel the bags.
    So as of now i only love to invest LV handbags.
    I have lv alma and lv speedy b.
    But i really appreciate what other people could be have different opinion.
    I agreed with amie, back to the initial objective.
    Buy a bag that you love and makes you happy 😊✌️

    As always, you're just so lovely to listen to! I've been debating whether or not to purchase a black Mulberry medium Lily, I'm not in a position to buy a Classic Flap at the moment and the Lily might offer a look reminiscent of the Chanel at a lower price point. I agree with just go and buy your most wanted bag even if its expensive vs just buying average priced bags and than not satisfied so you keep buying more. I know I bought my first brand name tote 3 years ago and I think its worth every penny, its one of my best bag and I think I saved more money sticking with my one and only vs going through heaps that I'm just OK with.

    It was really interesting to see you talk about this. I honestly thought when people were talking about investment bags and resale prices they thought they were actual investments. On the Internet it does seem as though more people own designer collections rather than their own homes, I thought perhaps some people were just a bit silly

    Hey Aime, what do you think would happen when Chanel prices increase to the point where they are the same price/even more than Birkins? Do you think there'll be a point where demand for Chanel drops like when a housing bubble bursts?

      I honestly don't think we will ever get to the point where Chanel costs more than Hermes. I doubt that luxury houses set their prices in isolation and part of the Hermes allure is that they are the most expensive. Hermes has price increases too so my guess will be that they will continue to increase as well - although there is the chance that Chanel might close the gap slightly.

    A fairly arbitrary limit I set myself for individual bag purchase is £1500-£2000 if it's something I've wanted for a long time, but unfortunately now there are basically no classic chanels at that price 😩 that said, i agree with you that if you have your heart absolutely set on something and you work hard and save for it, then you do you and buy it. If you put away money then no one has the right to tell you what is or isn't "responsible". Yeah, you could buy a car for £4K but there is no way you'll get that back when you sell it. If some people are allowed to blow hundreds of thousands of pounds on cars why shouldn't you buy a bag?
    One question though - if you had to do it all again with your Chanel collection at today's prices, would you? Like which ones would, for you, still be worth it (personal opinion of course 😊).

    • @ChaseAmie
      @ChaseAmie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm I would buy some bags but probably not others. My Chanel 'essentials' are my jumbo and my square mini so I would definitely try and get those. Next up would be my black Boy bag and my pink M/L, both of which I use a lot but I would probably draw the line there!

However when I'm considering buying a neverfull, I'm afraid the same problem will pop up, I found myself difficult to find the thing I want from my big if I'm using a one bag tote, do you recommend any lower price but practical tote for work e.g Michael Michrael Kors jet set? Or any other good options?

      There was a rumour a little while ago that Karl Lagerfeld preferred lambskin and so was gradually phasing out caviar. Caviar is generally less seen in seasonal collections but is still present. investment bags: i have not entered into the the realm of chanel yet.(although i really really want to!!!) the classic flap, woc, the boy, deauville, or the 2.55 for me are the holy grail bags. I have invested in Louis Vuitton however. The key for investment pieces would be the classics. I have 3 Speedys and 2 neverfulls 2 pochettes accessories 3 mini pochettes, a turenne, and a few more pieces and SLGs in my collection and I use all of them all of the time! I think that the investment part is that I have always wanted these bags and will always want them so they are well worth the price to me. Additionally, if my style ever changes, I would be able to sell for a fair amount. But I just could not imagine my bag life without a speedy!!!

  • @DAVROJUNIVERSE
    @DAVROJUNIVERSE 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The bag cost IS well over 100 pounds to make at cost even with mass production when you factor beyond the materials to include shipping, tariffs, production, especially advertising in Chanel's case (for which you can thank them as to your bag's value retention), and even the cost of running the boutique, and of course to a lesser degree the international ecommerce website. Additionally, luxury brands have to make a profit when all is said and done, and they do, though not nearly as much as one might think. It's been said that even a small luxury brand with a single branch or website alone, will go under if the markups are not MINIMUM 2.25 times the cost of goods. Just saying. :) Love your video.

      I think £5,000 GBP with come fairly quickly. If you think that in 2011, it was half the price that it is now, it's definitely not out of the question that it would double again in another 5 or so years. That said, it's not just Chanel nor is it just bags. I remember when all the fancy designer shoes were around the £300 mark. Now they're all being priced at £500 - £600. Crazy stuff!

    Hi Amie, hope you are well. Since you seemed to know your Chanels quite well I wanted to ask you which is your number one Chanel choice after obviously the classic flapbag? I have the classic flapbag in medium with gold hardware and I am wondering whether I should go for the WOC or a boy next. What is your personal opinion in terms of practicality and reselling value. Thanks in advance

    • @ChaseAmie
      @ChaseAmie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to own a WOC and found it way too impractical for me. It really is the tiniest bag (it's called a wallet for a reason I guess!) and I found the chain to be bizarrely long! Both are popular but the Boy resale value is generally better I think. I rarely see these go for under retail and I suspect Chanel will keep raising the prices to be more in line with the classic flaps. I personally would go with the Boy as I really do love mine :)

  • @michelelam3584
    @michelelam3584 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Amie, lots of people saying that buying a chanel classic flap is safe as you can always resell it for the cost or even profit. However, this was not my case. I was going to sell my chanel boy and classic flap to a renowned reseller. The reseller asked me for the authentication card number. I told her the number and they pretty much could tell the year and the original purchasing price that I bought. Then the reseller was only willing to offer me half of my "initial" purchase price. I told them both bags are in pristine conditions and the market prices of these bags are much higher. But they insisted they could only pay that much because the handbag was "used" and they were purchased couple years ago. So I ended up keeping both bags. Therefore, I don't see how these bags can hold their values. Maybe you can give me some tips on how to sell my bags at higher prices. Thanks :)

    • @ChaseAmie
      @ChaseAmie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I would never go the reseller or consignment route. I find the commissions way too high. I sell my bags through my blog now as unfortunately I don't think there are too many good options for sellers out there. In the past I have used Videdressing and eBay before although I would be careful selling there - their policies are very user-friendly!

    I do love Chanel, I study A Level textiles and the Classic flap bag is part of the Iconic Design exam booklet I have to read. I do think £4000 is far too much for a bag, but along with that you're buying into the history of the brand, of Chanel herself, and along with the craftsmanship of the bag itself. The bag itself is absolutely stunning and definitely holds its value and I'm currently saving for one, however I think i'll be like 75 by the time I can afford one! Haha :D

    I have a new jumbo and new mini, I sold my cc tote to my sister, because I'm planning on sticking with the classics for now, I don't regret buying them at all, I don't spend on other things like high end jewelry, so this to me is my investment, and I'm hoping to give them to my daughter one day! Now, since I have the jumbo and mini, would you suggest I get another mini? I love the cc fashion bags too, but I think the classics are a better investment like you mentioned
