    My rules on buying luxury item is always this: if I can't afford to buy 3 of them, that means I can't afford it at all. Hope that helps ☺️☺️ as it always stays on the back of my mind.

      @h_rk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      PrincessSakuno I think what she meant is: she will buy an item, only if she can afford to pay the prices of three of them. It means after paying for one of your dream item, you still own extra money as much as double price of that item. In number: pay for a bag that cost 1000£, but you still own 2000£ in your bank account (untouched)

    My rules are:
    1. Buy only what I love.
    2. Quality is worth the price tag.
    3. Practical, I can see myself using it plenty of times.

    100% agree about not getting caught up in the blogger/Instagram wish list. I'm being realistic, I wouldn't want to spend too much on a single designer item. Plus most of the bloggers hire or borrow from brands to promote.

    • @clumsywithwords
      @clumsywithwords 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree completely. People mostly forget that bloggers/instagramers don't own more than half of their pieces. They are just walking mannequins for the brands and even if they aren't borrowing, they are shopping with really big discounts.
      On the other hand, I really appreciate seeing items in more "real" environment, and on real people, than classic models and commercials.

      Pixel Inch ... also I think a lot of you tubers get in the habit of buying luxury bags at an excessive rate and then do a video on it and then return the bag. I notice that this method boosts their following as well.

    My shopping rules 1. no more high street store except I make an occasional exception for zara (the real human and environmental cost of the clothes are too high. 2. I can pick two trends per 6 months and buy one to two pieces for that trend and that's it. 3. No more "branching out" I wear black, white, grey, maroon and emerald green. That's just the way it is. Every time I try to "branch out" and buy a different color. I never wear it. So no more of that.

      @filosofis26 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Keely Nelsen We have the same rule number 1! I'm glad to find people who cares about the environment and also the humans who are making the clothes we wear!
      I buy less items but of a higher quality.... classic... and if I can I also buy from the locals wherever I am :)

    • @keely_cn8924
      @keely_cn8924 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      filosofis26 Exactly! That's what I did too! My breaking point was when I bought a high street shirt and I wore it once to an event where I sat down the whole time and it was trashed when I got home. It was literally falling apart just from sitting. I couldn't believe it and clearing out my closet to take things to the thrift store twice a year. There was so much. It just really made me think. I slowly overhauled my closet with nicer classics. I don't judge others who don't follow my philosophy, but for me personally I just needed to stop the waste and the oppression of people that goes along with it.

      Andrea, if you're interested and haven't read it already, there is a book called "Deluxe-how luxury lost it's luster" it's very well written and it goes into the general exploitation of all of us through the fashion industry. It's a bit dated now I think it's from 2009, but still really good. They briefly go into fast fashion at the very end.

    Very useful video, I bookmark anything I want to buy on my Phone, look at it constantly for a couple of months and then place a big order of all the items that I'm still in to and only choose one item from each category, works wonders because most things last a week before I get bored of them

    When it comes to designer handbags I only allow myself to buy classic ones, that never go out of style. The same when it comes to high end shoes and boots. And I need feel they are "me" and that I will be using them a lot. But i do buy less expensive shoes and boots as well. My clothing is usually high street but I allow myself to get a few more expensive pieces, because of the better quality and often better comfort. Like my coat from Acne that I will use for the 3rd fall and winter. Btw I often try to use what I already have in my closet instead of buying new all the time. :-)
    Great topic Amy, I loved watching your video. xx

      @Alvaro Ibacache S. Hello from NYC. I can tell you that contrary to popular belief, there is no Louis Vuitton "1-year guarantee" anywhere on the books -- their liability is 100% discretionary -- you are guaranteed nothing. Not a free repair and certainly not a replacement. In fact, employees are specifically trained on how to deter returns, refunds and repairs when possible. Google "Louis Vuitton customer complaints" for some very interesting and detailed accounts. Yes I do buy LV but with eyes.wide.open. LV cust svc is inconsistent and cannot be relied upon for excellence. Just sayin. 👛 xx

    I also stop myself from buying bags without long/comfortable shoulder straps. Very practical for daily use and I always regretted it when I overlooked this rule. I buy all my stockings and hosiery from Le Bourget and they are quite resistant and last a very long time. I know what to look for and never buy anything with less 40 deniers. They are expensive but I only buy from them on sale once a year or every two years. What I do is instead of going crazy and looking for good deals everywhere, I go strait to my go-to online store and buy what I actually need for a cheaper price. It's nice having you back, thanks for the video.

    Blogger-recommended skincare. Not at least without trying a sample first. I got burned so many times, and then I realised not everything they recommend they seem to use as part of their actual routines. Also eyeshadow palettes - makes no sense for me. I gave away my Naked 3 because I was only using half of it, if that.

  • @Missfrankiecat
    @Missfrankiecat 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    All great points. I try to buy less 'cheap' fashion - occasional Zara spurge is allowed to try the trends. I usually do think out and really get good value from expensive luxury purchases but buy 'cheaper' high street items on impulse without thinking and they really mount up and are frequently worn once or not at all.

    Amie, I will suggest you also buy a pair of gloves for those expensive tight (mostly you will find them in the same store). I definitely agree with all of these rules. I'm always lured in by limited edition, I've had to work on that. I'm good with cosmetics, because those will get used up, but it's still hard with handbags and shoes lol. Ted Baker is always a challenge because every season is a limited print. I pretty much allow myself only one thing from them each season lol.

    Shoes are my biggest regret too . I have so many that I still haven't worn once . Also totally agree with the blogger thing, I m so tempted to get so many items that are cool but do not fit in my life style . I would add to your list also make up , with so much bombarding on intaagram it's easy to feel pressure to buy the latest palette or product and to just use it a couple of times and then move to another trend . It all piles up . Now with Christmas it's even worse with the whole limited edition palettes .

  • @laurahills6109
    @laurahills6109 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for your thoughtful video. You offer some great ideas. I have established two additional rules that work well for me. I plan my wardrobe carefully and shop from a list. The first rule is: if I find something that I love that is not on my wardrobe shopping list, I must wait to purchase it. I give myself a mandatory cooling off period. Then, I assess whether it fits into my wardrobe and lifestyle. Often, I realize that the item, though beautiful, is not a good fit, or that it is very similar to something I already own and won't add anything new to my wardrobe. If the item is a good fit and I can afford it, then I buy it. (On occasion, I have bought something that I know won't be there if I wait too long. However, I leave it in the shopping bag or box with the tags on for at least a day or two before I take it out and consider it carefully. I return it if it turns out not to be a good fit for me.) My second rule is that I will not buy anything I have to talk myself into (or that a friend is trying to convince me to buy). That's how I avoid buying items that are uncomfortable or that are a steal but that don't work with my wardrobe and lifestyle.

  • @csikomas8910

    Good list! I do have rules but I usually break them. One item is to be more disciplined and read the list. LOL I don't know about you, or if I am in a different category, but when I want something I become obsessed and my stomach burns with anticipation. I know this is not right, not healthy, not normal, so truly, a great list would be one that I can use as a tool with helpful and supportive quotations on it to remind me of the end game. To stay away from, for me, is makeup just because. I have wasted so much money on in the moment lipstick and lip liner purchases. I need to just stay out of drugstores when I am bored. Also, no new books. I have an entire library and a credit at a used book store but out of boredom I do peruse Chapters and there I find other new books to read. No magazines. Really that is a waste if you have Pinterest. I used to also collect magazines, man that took up a lot of space. Stay out of the mall if I feel spendy or vulnerable. I used to tell myself I will just go the theatre beside the mall but I usually arrived early for the show and did a little shopping too. It can be expensive. The more often you say no, the easier it gets I find - and the more redirection of one's compulsions in less time. I'm a work in progress. LOL Great vid. Take care. c

    I can so relate to your list. I have one in my head:
    Eye shadow palettes. The look amazing, relatively inexpensive, blogger inspired but I'll use and not like my eyes with the shadow on. I think they look bruised.
    Expensive tights. I obsessed about the spotty tights too. Marks and Spencer's had some on a model dummy and never in my size. Wolford tights look amazing too, but £40 ! No m&s for me.
    SLGs. I have a few Louis Vuitton handbags and like a wallet or small purse to match, but have a joint account with my husband and am now saving for kitchen renovation. He hates my LV love.
    Impractical shoes. Again I love shoes and always try them on in the shop or around the house before sending back. Hubby gets fed up if I complain about blisters or am walking 10 meters behind him.
    Primark
    stuff. We don't have one near us but I went to Guildford with my sister and I was so excited picking up loads of stuff. She just gave me this look and said she was going to Kurt Geiger to look at shoes and it made me think her posh'o' meter was going through the roof ! I put it all back.
    The stuff does not last very well and it's nice to wear nicer stuff with a very expensive bag.
    Red lipstick, bags shoes etc... Am drawn to red but feel very self conscious wearing it so end up not wearing it.

  • @annaisapalindrome

    I love this list Amie! I can relate to a few of these like comfortable shoes and that applies to clothes too! I've definitely purchased clothing a size too small or large just because it was on sale and I "just had to buy it" or "I'll take it to a tailor to get it to fit better" when that's NEVER happened. About the special occasion dresses, is there a version of Rent the Runway in the UK? It's an absolute wallet-saver for me whenever I have to go to a formal event.

    The older I get, and the more financially independent I become, I see my list of things not to buy definitely growing! I try not to buy trendy items (if I do they are usually the cheaper alternatives). I also realize the more I learn my personal style, the less I get wrapped up in trends and what's hot right now. I'm more of an edgy prep, and I love your videos because you seem to have my style too! I also try to only buy one piece that is good quality and will last a long time, instead of buying multiple lesser quality things that seem to just clutter my closet

    Great idea for a video! I should lay some ground rules for myself in terms of shopping. Firstly, I should actually budget and stick to it. My shopping rule is only buying things if I've researched it and revisited numerous times with no change in feelings. I've stopped instant buying even though it's difficult especially if you love it and it's the last one left. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic! It's interesting you mentioned event dresses... I'm getting married next June 2017 and I already bought my wedding dress (it's beautiful and I feel great and comfortable in it but definitely not expensive and not very 'bridal' based on current standard style). The dress is from Tadashi Shoji and it's this beautiful high neck ivory gown (marketed more as a prom dress than a wedding dress). But now I'm regretting my decision... I feel like I should invest more money into THIS one dress, but I also know I cannot justify paying so much money for a dress that I only get to wear once. As you said, cost per wear is so important. I'm still undecided... but every time I ask my fiancé what his thoughts are about what I'll be wearing that day, he always tells me I'm more important than what I wear on our wedding day. When I walk down the aisle, it's me that he sees... I wish I don't feel this social pressure to spend a ton of money on the dress!

      If it is beautiful and makes you feel great, it sounds like the perfect dress. When you wear it, own it.

      First up, congratulations! How exciting! :) Secondly, I would say a wedding dress probably escapes the rule of normal shopping being a hopefully-once-in-a-lifetime thing! That said, spend what you're comfortable with! I constantly hear from just-married brides that they were surprised how quickly the day went by which might make any over-spending on a dress even more painful! Also keep in mind though, you could always sell the dress after, recouping some of your money :)

    Do you guys have Rent the Runway in the UK yet or something similar? It's definitely a saver for event dresses, though TBH, sometimes I find an excellent deal on an event dress at Nordstrom Rack or Saks Off 5th and decide to buy vs. rent. Also, totally agree on the uncomfy shoes. Sigh, been down that road many times.

    Great rules! Mine are that I have to sleep on things before making big purchases ; at least 3 or 4 days. I too get suckered in by IG and YT and suddenly have a wishlist of things I don't need 😂 so I force myself to sleep on it before adding them to cart to avoid impulse purchases. I also ask myself whether I see myself using/wearing the item at least 30 times or is it something I am likely to purge from my wardrobe in 18 months - this helps me trim down purchases to items that will really have longevity ( and is better from a sustainability point of view too!)

    Granny tip! (from someone in her 20s) I buy myself one pair of Wolford tights a year and they last me 5 yrs+. I have quite the collection of their velvet deluxe tights these days. They last soooo much longer than a cheap pair, are comfortable and wash really well. But yes they are a bit pricy (~$50).
    I get what you are saying though, for the ultra fine ones I'll turn to H&M and find a pair I won't feel bad if they break on first wear:)

    When tempted by a pricey purchase I imagine I am in a lower cost store, such as Kmart/Target/Asda; would I still purchase the item or am I getting caught up in the feel-good factor of shopping in a nice store? I like it because it's LV or Chanel etc., but would I like it just as much if it was a home brand or in the chemist/drugstore? I'd say 4 out of 5 times I leave without buying. Also I put things on 'lay-by' in my head for 3-4 days and if I really can't stop thinking about it or regret not buying it, I will go back. Most times, once I am home I am satisfied I didn't make a purchase.

    I have similar opinion about heavy tote bags. Because I have very weak arms, Having tote bags makes even putting something in my bag. So little bit annoyed carrying in small crossbags, I rather prefer that. Our shoulder is one and only thing we can never buy!

    My rule is one in- one out. If I buy something, then I have to either donate or sell an item- or gift it to someone I know would love it. I needed to radically downsize before a move and it does make you wince when there are items with tags that were bought on a whim and never worn

    I know it's on your list of things to not allow yourself to purchase, but I have had the opposite experience with tights: Wolford tights are insaaaanely beautiful. The quality is incredible, they wear beautifully, and they absolutely do not rip (I've had the same experience as you). If you can find a pair on sale, I'd urge you to test your rule once more and see what you think! :-) Perhaps I'll send you a pair if you tell me what kind of tights you like!
