Oh to be 10 years or so younger and in better health. I'd snap her up in a heart beat and go by the old survey when I did it. There's just so much there to work with and not a heck of a lot that'd need doing on the hard. Go through her top to bottom, engine, through wholes, wiring, fresh paint on the decks and on the bottom a few other bits and bobs and I'd splash her doing the rest of the work on the water. Thanks for showing her to us as I think she really will make someone younger and in better health one heck of a little yacht...
You know I'm subscribed to a great number of channels. However there are very few that I give a thumbs up to before I even watch the episode. Yours is one that I do. Thank you for taking us along window shopping and giving us a bit of an education along the way.
Wow!!!! I see why Capt Q loved the pb after seeing this shorter version.. after you spent a weekend with a rag and 5 gallons of wood polish the inside of her would be breathtaking.. i just love the old traditional boats
I crewed on a sloop rigged Lecomte Northeast 38 (as an 18yo kid in 1980) from Marathon Florida to New Rochelle Ny. Her name was ‘Nepenthe’ I’d love to find her and sail on it again.
I just came into a 1968 North East 38 mk2 basically for free. The MK2 and MK3 were spade rudder configurations. I believe the MK1 (the one in this video) was a 5000lb ballast. The mk2/3 were upped to 6000lbs. Mine is in pretty rough condition. About 3-1/2 years ago she broke from her mooring in a storm and washed on some rocks. Put a hole in her side. She was towed back to the mooring left there for some time. The hole was above the water line, so would slowly take in water. The owner at the time repaired the hole, sanded the exterior (top and bottom) and put epoxy primer on the bottom. But he never finished the job. Unfortunately she sat for these last 3-1/2 years and collected water in the bilge. Since then the aft portion of the keel has crushed due to the long sit. It's going to take me a few years to get her going again, but I'm looking forward to it! Thanks for sharing! It's awesome to see what my boat could become!
Wow, another beauty. I agree with Cap'n Q that modern boats sacrifice beauty and classic design for "something" more market-able. I guess most people don't want to go without at todays prices. I would love to see a tour of a Gozzard (any) or another Island Packet (370/379). Or Estero. Thanks for all the work you put into these videos. Edit: Cabo Rico!
Absolutely one of my favorites! Rich wood...[I'm a sucker for green cushions] thoughtful, functional, spartan, yet elegant ...Wonderful boat! Thanks Captain and Ran-Day!
I saw this while scanning Craigslist and thought I need to forward this to Captain Q and Ran-day. Then I flipped over to watch your weekly episode and here you are going through it!
Captain, please please do an episode on the wood 12 metre in the opening montage every week. That is the most beautiful boat ever. We know it's not a cruiser but just one episode on a pure no holds barred race boat would be most welcome.
@@YachtHunters Thanks Captain. The 12 meter boats have always been, for me, the pinnacle of sail racing. The current Americas Cup boats hold no interest for me. I'm getting along in years so my sailing days are probably behind me, but several years ago, I was in St. Marten where they have former AC boats that tourists can crew on for a race around the bouys in the bay. I was the main sheet trimmer working in the cockpit and visiting with the professional skipper( Ernie from South Africa. Great guy.) When the race was over, he asked me if I'd like to drive the boat. He didn't have to ask twice. When I took hold of the helm, a thrill went through me that I will never forget. Anyway, the last boat I will probably ever sail was a 12 meter for about half an hour across a bay in St. Maarten. I'll spend the rest of my days being pretty OK with that.
Captain Q, In 1985 I bought a fully equipped Northeast 38; newly overhauled Volvo diesel engine / 8 bags of sails just back from being checked by a sailmaker / inflatable dinghy / galley with three burner stove & oven / pots / pans /plates /silverware / engine spare parts / boat spare parts / extra steering system cable / radio / depth sounder / log / etc. from a Hamburg Yacht Club. Since I was buying it unseen, I made an offer of DM 50K (DM 4.30 = $1.00) with a goodly allowance for the "unknowns". My wife and I picked up our new toy in Hamburg and spent 5 weeks sailing in Denmark to find out what kinds of problems I had bought. Mostly small stuff, except our final trip from Denmark, hard on the wind in heavy rain. It was a long cold, wet slog to windward to Kiel. When we tied up at the Olympic Harbor in Kiel I was coiling lines and clearing up the cockpit when my wife yelled something from down below. I asked, "what did you say...? and her answer was, "tonight we sleep in a hotel " She told me that our forward cabin mattresses were soaking wet with seawater from the leaking forward hatch. The main thing the boat lacked was TLC. Nobody (they went on 6 man cruises all summer long) had ever recaulked the railing stanchions, or the hatches, but aside from that, we had a great 5 weeks sailing and exploring the Danish Islands.
Great video and commentary by the Captain and Ran-Day on a beautiful boat. I tend to like modern newer style boats, but videos like this make me appreciate the beauty of well-done older boats like the Lecomte.

She's a bargain, a 38 footer for $24,000 is very tempting for someone looking for a decent sized boat for a great price.. She's a proper boat and down here in Australia you couldn't buy a 38 footer of any make for that price in good nick. All the above taken into account, she is also pleasing to the eye, someone will do well here
Random note I hapened upon a 2016 copy of cruising world and there was a review in there for a new 32’ Hunter For what the reviewer considers for a loaded boat that could be had for under$200,000.00. What!!! ??? Really 🙄??
I just noticed that Bill Tripp passed away at 51 years young, pity. Even in that short life he contributed a great deal to the sailing world. Tripp Sr. has to be one of the most influential and important yacht designers in history - up there with Alberg, Rhodes, Herreshoff, and Stephens - always loved his iconic designs - Block Island and Bermuda 40, Columbia 50, Coronados, Le Comtes, etc..
You are a person of impeccable insight. Sadly he lost his life on the Connecticut Expressway when another car crossed the lane and killed him in his Jaguar. He was perfect for the time and an experimenter who didn’t follow the flock of other designers rather put a unique spin of his own on his designs. The Pbu was a great find for me and I loved her dearly but when I was looking for I was actually trying to find a Columbia 50 which I had sailed on from Bermuda back to New England after the 66 race. I still think she is one of the prettiest boats that he designed or that anybody designed for production purposes. There is actually a telling me to 50 sitting on a steel cradle in Malaysia waiting to be bought and shipped to some lucky new owner. I’ve been watching her for a couple of years. I like the basic original layout of the 50s and some people have redesigned the interiors but anyway that’s a fine point. If you do win the lottery are granny leaves you something special on her mantle keep an eye out for 50 they are rarely on the market and if you find one I don’t want it please contact me lol CQ
Good afternoon. Captain q and the new captain randy I am very happy to see a classic again in the American nautical. Another home run, blessings and congratulations. Health 🇺🇸💞🇨🇺
I love the lines in this boat and can imagine how responsive undersail. There is quite a bit to update d for myself I’d like to almost completely rearrange the interior. Put the stove back in. Create a much better navigation station. Redo the bathroom as you suggested. I wouldn’t need to sleep so many people and I could make the interior more livable at anchor and underway. The price is right though. Wonderful boat this week Captain and Ran-day.
Ya know,,, best. Bang for your buck I've seen on this channel. So many I've seen are way over priced, but this I bet won't last long. Key ingredient of course is the mast, and the engine (you never talked about either), that's would be concerning, but something tells me you knew this, and it was probably a sold boat. Good luck to the next owner. Less than a year, your cruising to the Bahamas and south..
Captain Q and Ran-day thank you for showing this gem, but I think she deserves a couple more points for having what appear to be comfortable pillows for the Captain in the forward vee berth. Worth a thought. Take care and have a good weekend. Maybe get some time on the water?
You forgot the engine room ! I noticed you guys forget to say how many horses the engine is in a number of episodes also . I also have a question do you guys update your old shows letting people know if the boats are still available for purchase ?
I am so surprised I grew up playing there as a kid and being on the river inback of you and yes if I didn't have a boat now I would purchase her in a heart beat .
@@YachtHunters yes but I have my ketch and she's just about done with a total refit , maybe next time. 1968 Choey Lee off shore . But thank you for the thought. Angus
Another beautiful Tripp jr design. Our 1961 Tripp Javelin 38 built by Van Lent and Zonen is similar, though a sloop, narrower at 9 ft, lighter at 14,500 lbs and 4500 lbs of lead ballast, and we've put on a LeisureFurl boom for ease of sailing.
If possible, could the captain talk about the difference on the water between older and newer boats handling and their sea kindly-ness.?? Do they heel more or less??
Back in the early '60s my father's first sailboat was a Tripp-Lentsch 30 foot. The boat looked like a small version of this boat with the dark blue hull same cabin top/portlight look, and a very wide companion way hatch. The boat was rather tender sailing in the Solent and English Channel, which was highlighted by his next boat a Camper and Nicholson 32.
When I look at a boat. I put the condition of the bilge and engine high on the list. Both show how well a boat is cared for. That bilge needs some love and the engine? What happened to the engine here? ;)
I was just curious, on a yearly bases how many bluewater sailors pass away at sea due to accidents ? I was discussing this with my wife and was telling her that it's much more dangerous to get in a car and drive somewhere. (even though I didn't have the actual facts) thank you and Ran- day for all you do.
The Medalist 33 featured early in the video looked like a big, Columbia 26 Mk II that I used to crew on! The cabin top looked identical; one could see it was a Bill Tripp design.
she was really quite different under water and of course the Columbias were production boats with molded interiors as oppsosed to the more limited production of the Le comtes both cool boats in their own way i have been trying to interview some older columbias but owners arent selling cool
Thursday's are so anticipated and a relief for me! The end monolog never gets old,( U know instagram is not a place)!alway's cracks me up! Thanx again, guys!!
Gorgeous boat. I am surprised at the Airex foam deck coring. I did not even know they were using it that far back. This one is tugging at my heart strings. The bow chocks imbedded in the toe rail and stainless port lights make my day every time. But yes, it is a shame the fireplace was removed. That refrigeration compressor would be taken off the engine and a 12V compressor installed because,,,,,,,well because I hate wasting engine hours on that sort of thing or for even charging the batteries. THAT is why God invented portable gasoline generators IMHO. The price is totally incredible though. I can just see myself on Boston Harbor anchored for the 4th of July fireworks after a day of spanking around the harbor. I loved that compass. I would have that housing heavy plated in brass IF it did not polish up.
I've sold a couple North East 39s. A C&C design based on a C&C one ton from the 80s. Cool boats beautifully built. New Englanders seem to get together and build some awesome one design boats ala the J44. Ok Cap look up a Lindenburg 22 my personal favorite from the 70s a boat way ahead of it's time. Open transom, hard chines, plum bow, retractable rudder, dagger board. I've sailed one at 13 knots main alone. Goofy boat but I always wanted to paint it with orange metal flake stripes and purple metal flake hull like a crazy looking Bass boat. A trailable regatta boat. Back to this boat. Seems like great potential
I don't quite get the "musher" concept. It seems it would uncomfortably slam into a wave with a wide bow rather than gently slicing through. What don't I understand?
As someone whose boat has a similar bow, with it having that angle downward towards the keel rather than an abrupt turn aft, the boat "settles" into the waves and mushes the water to either side rather that the abrupt pounding boats without it have. So you're a little slower with the shorter waterline, but improve the ride in the process.
So bit out of left field gentlemen ,,,love the show by the way,,,i'm all the way over in New Zealand and wondered if I was to say want to buy one of these beautiful boats you show us would you have any contacts who would be willing to sail said boat purchase out of USA waters to an island near by where I could take over and learn to sail her back to the land of the long white cloud? just a side question would you sail this boat to New Zealand and around the world?
I would love to but I’m a little creepy these days but Anytime I hear this question I can’t help but think of james Baldwin who went around 2x with and without a motor. Read his books all 4 memorializing his efforts Short answer:why not?
Thanks for sharing but i would consider the ceiling as the non structural covering whether by wood or in new boats fabric on the inner sides of the boats as the ceiling no?

The eloquence of language by the captain, his knowledge of seemingly everything around the older boats, your excellent symbiotic partnership, the choice of boats you present, the subtle sense of humour that's interjected almost nonchalantly, ..., great show... thank you ever so much.

Health
🇺🇸💞🇨🇺
Glad you enjoyed it
Randy, you are a great sideman! from a sailor nut in Marbelehead, MA
Wow, thanks! Love the nuts in Marblehead.... last got to race there at the Corinthian Classic a few years back on a Columbia 50. Cheers!
Thanks Beverly not that much to just get her sailing and then decide what really needs to be done except the fireplace NOW!!!
Beautiful and good price :)
thank you
Ya know,,, best.
Less than a year, your cruising to the Bahamas and south..
ha ha no problem the engine has been updated with rebuilt trans and all looks great
Captain Q and Ran-day thank you for showing this gem, but I think she deserves a couple more points for having what appear to be comfortable pillows for the Captain in the forward vee berth. Worth a thought. Take care and have a good weekend. Maybe get some time on the water?
Spot on Matt It’s a fight to just get a simple pillow
Wow !! A real Sweetie!
You forgot the engine room ! I noticed you guys forget to say how many horses the engine is in a number of episodes also . I also have a question do you guys update your old shows letting people know if the boats are still available for purchase ?
I am so surprised I grew up playing there as a kid and being on the river inback of you and yes if I didn't have a boat now I would purchase her in a heart beat .
there is a cure you know for your dilemma :-)
@@YachtHunters yes but I have my ketch and she's just about done with a total refit , maybe next time. 1968 Choey Lee off shore . But thank you for the thought.
Angus
Another beautiful Tripp jr design.
Our 1961 Tripp Javelin 38 built by Van Lent and Zonen is similar, though a sloop, narrower at 9 ft, lighter at 14,500 lbs and 4500 lbs of lead ballast, and we've put on a LeisureFurl boom for ease of sailing.
she is a pretty boat what water do you sail
I'm loving this boat! Might be taking a drive that way.
You should! but not yet....wait til i have emptied my couch seat cushions and then some one shouts GO!
@@YachtHunters What I see is what I get! LOL. Besides, I have a way longer drive! 😁❤️
If possible, could the captain talk about the difference on the water between older and newer boats handling and their sea kindly-ness.?? Do they heel more or less??
good luck
I don't understand why they call the walls of a boat ceilings. I really enjoy your channel. I'm learning a lot about boats.
We don’t understand why either but we will listen for answers from the field and do a little research
What a awesome boat!
thank you
Back in the early '60s my father's first sailboat was a Tripp-Lentsch 30 foot. The boat looked like a small version of this boat with the dark blue hull same cabin top/portlight look, and a very wide companion way hatch. The boat was rather tender sailing in the Solent and English Channel, which was highlighted by his next boat a Camper and Nicholson 32.
love getting personal anecdotes
When I look at a boat. I put the condition of the bilge and engine high on the list. Both show how well a boat is cared for. That bilge needs some love and the engine? What happened to the engine here? ;)
Engine is fine. Tranny just rebuilt etc etc We were just asleep at the wheel
I was just curious, on a yearly bases how many bluewater sailors pass away at sea due to accidents ? I was discussing this with my wife and was telling her that it's much more dangerous to get in a car and drive somewhere. (even though I didn't have the actual facts) thank you and Ran- day for all you do.
my guess on the overall causes of death world wide that the sailing death numbers would be near the bottom of that list just above snowball atacks
😂😂😂 thank you Sir, I appreciate your time 👍
The Medalist 33 featured early in the video looked like a big, Columbia 26 Mk II that I used to crew on!
Another fine gem uncovered by the Q
zing
Tidy little 38footer. Another brilliant episode Gentlemen.
thank you and we thank Bill and Dolf
Nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Шикарная лодка !!!
Thursday's are so anticipated and a relief for me! The end monolog never gets old,( U know instagram is not a place)!alway's cracks me up! Thanx again, guys!!
so glad we can help you through another week lol
The problem with deck drains is that often water intrudes and cause delimitation, otherwise and properly cared for, it is a good idea.
randy has lots of thru hulls - maybe repurpose one to a salt water deck wash or attach one to a manifold
Agreed… a manifold to combine some would be great
Pretty good shape and a great price
Agreed!
I would have that housing heavy plated in brass IF it did not polish up.
you can tell true love a miile away
“Very dressy....”. Another wonderful episode... thank you!
thank you
I've sold a couple North East 39s.
Seems like great potential
she looks wild there is a lid for every pot thanks for chiming in
Rating totally not biased :)
Nice boat, incredible price. This will go quickly.
We agree! ahhhhmmmmmm
Nice and small for one. Good find
Yes it was
I’m not wild about the pega-board headliner but not a deal breaker.
Does the Captain still the PB? This is one of the cooler boats you’ve shown. A great fixer upper
the pb left town about 20years ago and now lives in the med
Ahhhhh. Thanks. We’ll then the Captain oughta buy this boat
He’ll have to find a branch of randays “Old Boat Bank”
I don't quite get the "musher" concept. It seems it would uncomfortably slam into a wave with a wide bow rather than gently slicing through. What don't I understand?
As someone whose boat has a similar bow, with it having that angle downward towards the keel rather than an abrupt turn aft, the boat "settles" into the waves and mushes the water to either side rather that the abrupt pounding boats without it have. So you're a little slower with the shorter waterline, but improve the ride in the process.
I actually think I enjoy the stories of the people behind the boats more than the boats themselves… not that I don’t enjoy the boat
oh thank you
Beautiful boat, my tastes are much the same as yours Captain Q.
What a boat. Your vids are driving me crazy. But it's a good crazy.
Haha 😂 life’s too short not to go a little crazy and get out on the water!
Hi guys l love this boat how did u find this I would like to contact seller would be sailing back to ireland
Best of luck - the seller info is located under the video (you will have to click ‘show more’)… let us know how it goes!
You missed a visit in Amesbury to Lowell's Boat Shop, oldest operating boat shop in America. (est.1793)
we will check that out when we go by again
So bit out of left field gentlemen ,,,love the show by the way,,,i'm all the way over in New Zealand and wondered if I was to say want to buy one of these beautiful boats you show us would you have any contacts who would be willing to sail said boat purchase out of USA waters to an island near by where I could take over and learn to sail her back to the land of the long white cloud? just a side question would you sail this boat to New Zealand and around the world?
I would love to but I’m a little creepy these days but
Anytime I hear this question I can’t help but think of james Baldwin who went around 2x with and without a motor. Read his books all 4 memorializing his efforts
Short answer:why not?
Hey Randy - I think we could count those thru-hulls on one hand. Jealous?!?! 😁
You got that right!
This is great although a little big! Can you find me a Siren!??
I really enjoy y our videos guys. Informative and entertaining and thanks to the ol' salt very educational too. Well done.
thanks for subscribing
@@YachtHunters Been subscribed since you started.
Minor point on nomenclature. Ceiling is the inner planking on the hull. “Walls” are called “bulkheads” aboard boats.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing but i would consider the ceiling as the non structural covering whether by wood or in new boats fabric on the inner sides of the boats as the ceiling no?
Yall seem to be North Eastern coast... can we get a review on Old Ironsides?
Aye sue matey We will fire a warning shot and gave heaven to if she tries to cross our path.
I’d love to CQ
She is pretty...thanks..
Great show. You are going overboard with the rating it deserves it. It must be a great sailing experience.
all sailing is a great experience
