I wish I would have learned how to sign a long time ago. I am thankful that videos like this are easily available. I've been a preschool teacher for 25 years. While I have learned basic words for my non-speaking students, or students with speech problems, I just this year got 2 deaf students. One is two years old and he has no language at all. In the past few weeks he has learned several signs from our deaf/hard of hearing teacher, his case manager, and from me. As his teacher, I spend more time with him than anyone else, so he and I are learning together. Thank you for what you do.
I got so interested in ASL thanks to you! In fact, I bought Nyle DiMarco's book Deaf Utopia, and after reading that, I signed up for ASL courses at Gallaudet University. :) So exciting ~ It's a whole new world of communication for me. Thank you for all that you do!

More church signs/religious signs please. Sometimes, not often, someone comes into my church that is deaf and needs and an interpreter. Thanks, Meredith! All of your videos help me!
Oh Lord it will take more than just learning a few religious signs to interpret a church service. ASL isn't about words so much as concepts and often many words can be signed in different ways depending on the concept or meaning behind it. Especially in religious signs. I would really encourage you to take a signing class in you are wanting to do any interpreting at all. A simple and small change in a sign can change the entire meaning and many signs are signed very similar. Especially for beginners. Or hire an interpreter.

Hey! So I work at a daycare, and there's a new kid that is deaf. I'm determined to speak his language! I found your channel and I've no joke been watching it non-stop. Is there any way you can make a video on how to sign stuff like "bathroom" or "cleanup"? you know general stuff you would teach/ask a kid? He's 9 and he's crazy fast a signing. I don't know how to say "slow down" I feel so helpless! If you can't I completely understand!

I am 65-year-old indian living in India. I want to know if there is any exams conducted by institutions, if so the procedure and details of the same. Also how to practice and interact with deaf community. Does anyone in Chennai, india. Tnks

CHAIR and SIT are a noun-verb pair in ASL, which follow the pattern of: CHAIR (noun) is a double movement, while SIT (verb) is a singular motion. (so "sit" is one large downward movement while "chair" repeats the movement smaller.) Hope that helps! For the English phrase "sit in the chair", in ASL that might be signed a few ways depending on context. Most likely, you could sign SIT and point to the chair in question. Or you could topicalize "chair" and sign CHAIR (there/point), SIT.

You'd repeat the sign! If just saying "walls" you can repeat the sign in place or move it away from you slightly. If referring to multiple walls in a room, you'd use the space to 'place' the wall where it belongs.

Close! It's actually not the sign "help". Firstly, note that the non-dominant (left) hand is palm down for "Lamp" instead of palm-up like in "help". You're correct that the right handshape is similar though -- the open "A" handshape (like that seen in HELP) is a classifier (a handshape that represents the shape/position of something) that represents a lamp-sized object on a table (the left hand is the table). Hope that makes sense!

You should point out not to get the first sign for REFRIGERATOR mixed up with READ. Very similar for someone first learning.

Yes, it's typically fingerspelled. You might use classifiers to *describe* it (eg: "COOK BOX 4-CIRCLES") but in general, it's fingerspelled.
