People often don’t know that American Sign Language is not translated English. ASL is a language of its own used by the deaf community. When you use your voice and signing ASL, you are basically speaking one language and signing another at the same time.

@@learnasl1644 Yes, I can understand. But for deaf culture, it's easier to talk to a person with no voice. I'm deaf and can talk, I tried that and take my mind to work to speak and sign at the same time. Without voice, signing smoothly. Make sense?

We have to address that Java's subtitles are the best. "It is ok, I told him to go away" cracked me up!! - This made me wonder: Does Java have different behavior with Ellen than with Ryan? Does she uses more crying and braking with Ellen, but more visual cues with Ryan? I guess that since barking won't call Ryan's attention all the time if he is not seeing her bark, she might associate that for him she needs to act differently. Does that happen?
Despite how good dogs are with verbal commands (and other sound cues, like in clicker training), they actually respond _exceedingly_ well to visual signals. That’s why it’s really common for dog trainers to use hand signals at the same time. I’ve even heard some claims that dogs respond to hand signals better than verbal commands, though IMHO they are both highly effective. My childhood dog was originally trained with commands in Spanish by my mom. Then my grandma moved in with us and simply started speaking English to the dog, so she quickly learned the English commands, too. And then we moved to Switzerland and my stepdad simply used German commands, so in the end we had a trilingual dog! 😂
I believe Ryan said he can hear her bark. Some deaf people can hear their dog barking, some can’t. I have a medic alert dog dog who is bilingual (knows her commands in in English and home signs, some of which are ASL) because I’m deaf and everyone else in the family is hearing. Side benefit, she’s smart and she figured out i can hear some things and not others so if I’m not paying attention she tells me when someone is at the front or back door, or if she wants to go for a walk she will either go to the back door and bark once then watch to see if anyone is paying attention and coming to walk her, and if not will come look at me pointedly, then look at the door or try to herd me towards her leash LOL. She communicates very clearly. Like looks at me, looks at her toy, her bowl, the door, and if I’m ignoring her visual cues she will stand in front of me and bark once to get my attention, but if i don’t hear her or see her she will come nudge me. Like i said, she’s really smart LOL their dog seems to be pretty smart too.

Not that you aren't when you sign and talk but it's just like you stated you just come off as so much more free when you're just doing the one task Also I think I'd want more videos of just the two of you signing (no voice). Love the challenge of voice off. I get excited and intimidated at the same time, just like when I used to take ASL classes. A big change with this video was once I was intensely concentrating on Ellen's signing, the noise from Ryan innocently reaching in the food basket for a tater tot was seemingly SO loud. I actually jumped. Earlier on, I also started squinting when Java was barking at the door bc I was trying so hard to concentrate on Ellen's signing. Had no clue how much I was relying on Ellen's voice all this time! I thought I was getting better. I love all your videos, but I hope you'll do more of these. As much as I vibe with Ellen's musical edits, I'm off to rewatch all your others in silence. 😊 🤟
I was talking about you guys with my sister who is hearing but she learned sign language from kindergarten to college. She told me to not watch with CC on to learn more signing so this video is perfect time lol!
Erica! Thanks for mentioning that advice that your sister shared. For years I keep the CC's on in order to learn more. But I think it is time for me to challenge myself and turn them off. Thanks again! God bless you
Oh wow!! They have hoodies with that on their! That is great. I want one😁 But wait, I'm hearing.... Would that be okay? My name is Nichole. I've been following Sign Duo for a long time. I'm learning ASL because it is the most beautiful language ever!! May I ask if you are deaf Keoni? If so would you consider getting to know me and then possibly practicing with me some time. I don't know anyone that is actually deaf. Thanks for your time.
@@learnasl1644 yea I think it’s fine if hearing people use the hoodie, that’s why there are abcs on the back. The “I’m not faking it” is more to confront that people shouldn’t judge based on just looks because a disability doesn’t always show.
As someone who is just learning ASL, having Ellen speak as she is signing really helps me identify the signs. I generally watch the video twice, focusing the second time on Ryan's signing. I am learning so much from watching both of you. Thank you.
It was so nice to see how much more comfortable and chill Ellen is when she doesn't have to focus on voicing at the same time! It's true though you guys have parts of your signing that are similar, but ellen does have her own style. What a cool video, thank you guys so much!
This was great to turn off CC's and follow along as best I could! Y'all are fast! I clearly have a ways to go ;) BUT...super cool to get as close to practical experience as I can get for now. Thank you! Also, loving the new hoodie! Soooo nice for 6am dog walks
That was a real cool treat to see your real interactions. You could tell it’s way less mentally taxing like you said. Your captions for Java always make me laugh!!! I know it takes lots of work to post content, I appreciate the effort! Keep it up! I laughed so hard when Java said “I drive” 🤣.
Watching you guys really makes me want to learn sign language! I'll surely start learning soon (at least the basics) so that I can kinda communicate if I ever come across any deaf person! You guys are a Wonderful couple and ily! ♥
Really love how comfortable Ellen looked like without using her voice. I noticed I pay more attention to facial expressions, closed captions and signs when she's not voicing and it feels great and easier to assimilate
Wow I loved watching this so much. Sign language should be talked about way more and incorporated in our society it’s an amazing skill and very helpful
I watched the whole video without captions to work on my receptive skills and both of your signing styles are so easy to understand, I would love to see more content like this! Thanks!

You guys help me improve my ASL so much! I'm in ASL class at my high school, and seeing conversational signing is so different than the deliberate signs you see in instructional videos. I love watching y'alls videos!
I much prefer this! The subtitles already convey what you're saying, so the more natural nature of this and the emotions you can now put in EASILY make up for the lack of voice! This is great. Do everything like this! Also you guys are awesome and adorable. I only just found you guys but i already love both of you. Wish you the best all the way from The Netherlands
That was so cool to see you sign as you normally do! And so nice to see u guys again, missed u! 😜 I know u guys recommend skillshare but I was wondering if u or anyone might know of any certified courses for professional use that u can recommend? I’ve always wanted to learn (hence why I started watching you) and it would also be useful in my work. Thanks in advance!
I work with someone who is deaf and I know basic signs but am really trying to learn conversational sign. I had seen Deaf social media accounts I follow talk about students learning best by not using voice. Seeing how different Ellen is when she's not doing both voice and sign is really a great representation of that. The energy you mentioned it takes to do both makes more sense now. And seeing how you were so fluid and your body language and face, it just makes me understand more that I want to turn off my voice and keep working on it. I might just need Skillshare to help me figure that out 🤣
Sign is so interesting to me because it doesn't even look like you guys are looking at the other persons hands to understand what they are saying. Does that come with practice?
I remember them saying in one vid that they can see the other’s hands using their peripheral vision? I think lol. And when signing another important thing is to read lips as well, it’s kind of strange to focus on two things at once but it gets better w practice.
I remember from another video that they said they can maintain that eye contact because they've known each other for so long and they're familiar with the way each other communicates. They said that if it's someone they don't know as well that they sometimes find themselves looking at the other persons hands as well
Hello! It does come with time! Often beginners look at lot at the hands, but then they miss part of the message that is portrayed in the facial grammar. When you are more experienced you use your peripheral and wide lens vision to take in the whole message looking at the face and hands at the same time.
I’ve been watching your videos for awhile now and this one is probably my favorite! As a hearing person who was married to a deaf guy, I learned ASL the way you did. Ryan is easy to understand (and so patient) and your signing is much better (clearer and smoother) without voice. Thanks for sharing your lives. 👍
I wonder how they call Java from far away. Do they have some sort of whistle or does she see your signs from really far away? Like in a situation where Java gets super excited and runs off to another dog or so and you have to "force" her to come back.
I loved this style of voices off video! It's really cool to see Ellen's more casual signing style and how similar it is to Ryan's. Would love if you wanted to do more voices off videos in the future!
My childhood dog ended up trilingual: my mom originally trained her using Spanish commands. Then my grandma moved in and stroke to the dog in English, so she quickly learned that. And then we moved in with my stepdad who spoke to her in German!

I love any combination of voicing and signing that’s more comfortable for you, but I honestly quite like the signing on its own :)
God bless you
Yayyyy a new video while I’m wearing my “I’m not faking it” hoodie💛
Oh wow!! They have hoodies with that on their! That is great. I want one😁
But wait, I'm hearing....
Sorry I misspelled your name. Sorry!
Hey Keiona!! That’s soo awesome! Thank you for the support! I hope you are happy with the hoodie and that it is comfy ❤️
Thank you.
You guys are so cool!!! I enjoyed going on errands with you guys 😊
It was so nice to see how much more comfortable and chill Ellen is when she doesn't have to focus on voicing at the same time! It's true though you guys have parts of your signing that are similar, but ellen does have her own style. What a cool video, thank you guys so much!
I had a Deaf client come to my dog daycare last week and I realized how much ASL I still know. I think your videos have helped me a lot in that 💕
This was great to turn off CC's and follow along as best I could! Y'all are fast! I clearly have a ways to go ;) BUT...super cool to get as close to practical experience as I can get for now. Thank you! Also, loving the new hoodie! Soooo nice for 6am dog walks
Hey Devin! Did you know that you can slow down the speed of the video in order to catch every single sign? Happy signing!
@@learnasl1644 I know that now that you told me! Thank you!!!
"bc we've been together 10 years" wow that just warmed my entire heart
the way you guys look at each otherrrr 🥺 so cute
That was a real cool treat to see your real interactions. You could tell it’s way less mentally taxing like you said. Your captions for Java always make me laugh!!! I know it takes lots of work to post content, I appreciate the effort! Keep it up! I laughed so hard when Java said “I drive” 🤣.
being able to "talk" while eating is such a big flex for ASL users XD
Watching you guys really makes me want to learn sign language! I'll surely start learning soon (at least the basics) so that I can kinda communicate if I ever come across any deaf person! You guys are a Wonderful couple and ily! ♥
when i started watching you i knew i wanted to learn sign
Really love how comfortable Ellen looked like without using her voice. I noticed I pay more attention to facial expressions, closed captions and signs when she's not voicing and it feels great and easier to assimilate
I agree with Ellen, I find myself pausing a lot mid sentence, when I speak out loud and sign simultaneously.
Also- Java is the cutest.
Literally the only couple I’d watch on TH-cam! Love your dynamic 🥺❤️
I just realized you guys have a special ability to talk with your mouths full and have it not be gross 😂. This was super interesting, thank you!
Wow I loved watching this so much. Sign language should be talked about way more and incorporated in our society it’s an amazing skill and very helpful
3:41 love how they can communicate afar without yelliing
Plus, you don't have to strain your voice by yelling, just an effortless sign...
I would be more than happy to have more videos like this! I always get so excited when I recognize a sign or can follow along with a whole sentence 😂
The outro was so cute! Need more of that. 💗😊
I watched the whole video without captions to work on my receptive skills and both of your signing styles are so easy to understand, I would love to see more content like this! Thanks!
YAY A POST I’VE BEEN WAITING!
Yayyyy hi!
My puppies loved watching this video with me. They got very excited about Java’s whines and barks 🐾🐾 So happy to see you two continuing to grow your channel! You deserve all the love and support!!! I hope you both are happy and healthy and staying safe ☺️☺️☺️ Also, Ellen, I totally agree that just signing or just speaking feels the most natural for me. Even with almost ten years of experience signing, SIMCOM is still challenging.
Just found yall. My boyfriend is deaf but has hearing aides to help him hear. His name is also Ryan so kinda cool. This will be nice to watch someone I can relate too somewhat.
I recently started to learn ASL and stumbled on your page! Love it!!
Love from Egypt!
Hello thank you for todays dose of serotonin 💜
skillshare been sponsoring you for so long but i can never skip it lmaoo love you guys!!
This needs more attention from every part of the world
I have been learning sign, and every so often I will catch a sign and know what it means and it feels so good to understand without having to rely on the subtitles 100% of the time.
totally off topic but the subtitles for java “ROO ROO ROO ROO.... RUFF ROO ROO” 😂😂😂
If you were deaf, you couldn’t hear how you talking but this girl spoke very clearly. God bless her
Definitely do this more often!!
Feel instantly in love with both of you for opening me up to the wonderful world of signing. Your amazing dog napped through lunch without begging is awesome too.
Just wanted to pop a comment in here and say my new, “I’m not faking it,” hoodie came in last week and it’s hands down my new favorite! It’s suuuuper soft and I have already received a ton of nice comments😊❤️ (I couldn’t figure out how to leave a review on the website lol)
Heyy!! In soooo glad that it’s comfy and that you like it! We tried really hard to find the best hoodies we could share ❤️ thank you for commenting and letting us know
You guys help me improve my ASL so much! I'm in ASL class at my high school, and seeing conversational signing is so different than the deliberate signs you see in instructional videos. I love watching y'alls videos!
I have never clicked faster!!!!
Love you guys so much♡
❤️
You guys are such an incredibly beautiful couple both inside and out and have an admirable sense of harmony. Love is indeed lovely!
Yay I missed your videos so much!! Thank you guys❤❤
I don't speak doggie language so I appreciate the subtitles when java speaks😆🐶
haha :)
Please keep doing this!! It helps with trying to learn sign when you both sign naturally and smoothly like that!! Awesome vid!
The sweetest couple in the world 🥰
I was wondering how Ryan goes to interviews does he request a translator? Please notice 🥺
The Deaf community takes a special interest to me and I love learning about people like you. You guys are so sweet and your dog is PRECIOUS.
Your dog is so cute ☺️😍🥰
i like when it’s voice off. it’s a lot easier to focus on y’all’s signing
Thank you Ellen for voicing your messages 🙏 I don’t understand ASL so for me it’s a blessing
i’m taking a beginner sign language class in the upcoming fall semester and i’m so excited
That was so cool to see you sign as you normally do! And so nice to see u guys again, missed u! 😜
I know u guys recommend skillshare but I was wondering if u or anyone might know of any certified courses for professional use that u can recommend? I’ve always wanted to learn (hence why I started watching you) and it would also be useful in my work. Thanks in advance!
This video came up in my recommended videos. So glad to be introduced to you two!
Hello Sign DUo! ❤️
@@savanahgleckler thank you for explaining that is very insightful:)
@@mia-saraking5479 thank you for explaining:)
They commented on someone else’s post saying that they still clap their hands to get her attention.
I loved this style of voices off video! It's really cool to see Ellen's more casual signing style and how similar it is to Ryan's. Would love if you wanted to do more voices off videos in the future!
I have a question for Ryan, is it different to lip read if the person has an accent?
Another enjoyable Sign duo (or sign trio with Java!) video. Such a sweet couple.
Java is bilingual, like her parents! 🐶😊
She is! A smart Pupper 🐶
My childhood dog ended up trilingual: my mom originally trained her using Spanish commands. Then my grandma moved in and stroke to the dog in English, so she quickly learned that. And then we moved in with my stepdad who spoke to her in German!
i was so happy when i saw a sign duo vid in my youtube notifications! Y'all are the reason I learned sign!! :)
Question: everyone knows it's rude to talk with a full mouth. Is it considered rude to sign with a full mouth, too?
This video did not have any CC when I tried to turn on CC, but I have no complaints because that forced me to pay more attention to which signs I remembered from your other videos. Thanks for allowing us a peek into your daily lives. Java is so adorable!
