I am in a wheelchair and can only be up in the wheelchair for about an hour and a half a day. I make all my own food because I like to cook. It's so nice to be able to cook 4 days worth of food at a time. I try to cook one meal a day to last 3 or 4 days. It helps out with my health to do it this way and give me a reason to get up. I am really enjoying your channel.
The cost of labor and transport is in the 30p for the shop bought soup; the people who picked the crops, drove it to the processor, processed it, drove it to the shop, people in the shop, etc. plus the people who made the cans and the labels and boxes. The cost of labor is not in your 3p per serving for your home grown. It helps me to keep that in mind when I run out of what I’ve grown and need to go buy canned food, that I need to respect those people.
There are a lot of soups in the grocery stores (UK) that have modified corn starch, we never buy them! We always check labels. We're getting better at growing our own veg. so this year I was throwing gallon bags of cut up veg into the freezer (we invested in a huge freezer from Curries, its been a Godsend!), so I tried an experiment. I took one day in autumn, pulled all the bags out and had an assembly line to fill new gallon bags with a handful of each veg, not all the way full, zip it up and back into the freezer. When I want to make soup, I take one bag, throw it in the instant pot (fills about to halfway mark), add 8c water, two low or no salt boullion cubes, 1c red lentils, black pepper, 2 bay leaves, 1 tsp rosemary, 1 tsp thyme, 1 tsp basil, 2 tsp parsley or dried carrot greens. If my bag was lacking certain veg I add it now, fresh or frozen. Cook High Pressure 10 min. Natural release or release at 20-30 min. Take out bay leaves, blitz with stick blender just a bit. Now if I have pre cooked homegrown beans in the freezer, I thaw while ipot is cooking, and add them at the end or heat a drained tin of beans and add before blending. This makes 6 deep, big bowls of soup! We eat one now and the rest go in the freezer. Non of the veg are blanched first, I even put potatoes in, all veg are washed, trimmed and cut ready to use. I use potatoes, carrots, celery, leeks, onion, garlic, squash, zucchini (courgette), parsnips, whatever you have going. I can't tell you how great it feels to eat a good tasting healthy soup, all organic because you grew it yourself!! All the herbs but the basil we grew, no polytunnel or greenhouse for any of it either, in the Scottish Borders. If you've got kale or cabbage or brassica leaves, throw them in too. I also dry lots of greens, especially brassicas, in mesh bags over the radiator, then grind to powder and keep in jars. This stuff is great to add 1-2 T to soups. I hope this inspires someone to try it, so easy!
Very helpful information on how to combine your harvest with soup making. This kind on detailed concrete information will be so helpful to me as I work at making healthy meals on a slim budget.
Mashing the tomatoes with a potato masher really works if no blender and adding a sprinkle of thyme is lovely. Also a bay leaf while cooking. French onion soup is lovely too and cheap. Make your own crutons to add.
I used to be a fan of Campbell's condensed tomato soup but then I began making my own and cannot stand the commercial stuff now. So many chemicals, too salty and a metallic taste. It is amazing to hear the cost differences! Thank you for taking the time to work all that out for our education.

My favorite! Give it a try Vivi, two slices of bread with 2-3 thin slice of cheese, toast it in the pan until the cheese is melted. This is one of my meals for dinner. Oh to have the energy to make my own soup more often. It’s taken me three days to make a stock tomato sauce for the freezer. Still I have 12 portions of basic sauce now that can be adapted for chilli or bolognese sauce. It’s lovely knowing what’s in the food, the worst part of buying pre-made is all the additives. Yay for gluts leading to lovely soups! It was a glut of courgette that first got me making courgette soup.....it's now one of my fave soups so I grow extra courgettes on purpose! 😊
Thank-you for your deep dive on how you manage to make healthy meals on so little money. I am changing my relationship with the grocery store and will focus more on basic staples to create my meals. It is a difficult time for me and looking at this from a different perspective makes me hopeful that I can trim my budget and still eat well.
Very interesting, and the homemade soup is the best I assume. I just make some easy dinners during the week, if I dont have leftovers, or premade dinners to heat up. I recently bought an airfryer, was sceptical if i was going to use it much. Now it is a really good help. Today I seasoned 2 chicken breasts, put them in the airfryer, and added it to a salad kit from the super market. Feeds 3 of us. It is so good, and my more healthy fast food. 🙂
This is excellent. I'll be making this soon. I may add: a potato for creaminess, cooked beens, cooked chopped bacon/cooked crumbled sausage, cooked cut green beans, etc. It will still be cheaper and far tastier than any tinned soup!!
I recently bought can condensed Campbell's tomato soup for 60 cents. Here in massachusetts that would generally cost $1.39. I finely diced carrots, celery and onion in a bit of olive oil. When soft I added 2 cups water and some thyme. Then I added the condensed soup. Two good size servings for about $1 to $1.50. Most of our soups are homemade but I occasionally use soups ive bought on sale for convenience or emergencies (too sick to cook much). Sometimes I make Greek lemon soup starting with canned chicken and rice. I add a can and a half to two cans of rice, bit of leftover chicken or rice if ive got it, some lemon juice and then a beaten egg after its been heated awhile.
❤❤❤ This video is truly an eye opener. That's why, since I've had my allotment, I've been using a lot of my own vegetables to make soups. What almost no one around me can or wants to understand: “Soups, how boring!” But luckily they are my soups, not hers. And so far I've never thrown any of it away. Which makes me very proud. Nothing beats hot soup on a cold winter day. Just don't forget to get them out of the freezer in good time. Thank you for this video. 😊

Great video, Vivi 👏🏻 re the can of soup portions and serving 2, this is how they (Heinz) get around the salt, E number content etc in the tin ie the amount of these in a tin are over the "recommended " amounts for 1 person so they say it's for two, thus halving the numbers. Hope that puts it into more perspective - because I don't know anyone who splits a tin of soup 😉😄❤

Thank you for this Vivi, it's so encouraging for those of us who are shocked at rising prices on a weekly basis and struggle to come up with empowering solutions. I used to run a cafe and always had a good selection of 'from scrattch' meals, including soups. I say you'd make a successful cafe proprietor. I do make tomato soup. Anything tomato wins me over. I grow a years supply of tomatoes for sauce and generally just turn a basic pasta sauce into soup. As I finished the video I made the soup as you instructed although I like my Italian herbs and extra thyme in mine. It's really lovely with the carrots, onion and celery and so much more nourishing. A good and cheap addition would be to have cooked lentils in the freezer for padding it out with extra nutrients. I soak a big batch over night then rinse really well, cook off and then freeze for ease when I'm feeling a bit rushed. I gave up on tinned soups years ago and having bought some recently they will only ever be in storage for emergencies as they all taste awful really and have lots of unnecessary 'fillers'. It would be great to have a monthly soup video Vivi, I'm certain this could really catch on. You could make the soup according to the veg in season or what is on offer. I was disappointed to find nowhere had pumpkins the day after Halloween as I had planned to make up cheap pumpkin soups for the freezer. My home grown didn't go as well this year.
I'm all for a bit of padding and have certainly added lentils from time-to-time to make a more substantial meal. Hahaha......a soup a month.....funny you should say that s I am planning another comparison soup next month! 😉
Hi Vivi, if you didn't want to eat the canned tomato soup you could make a pasta sauce with it. My Mother used to make home made spaghetti with it. We preferred her to store bought.
I bought an electric soup kettle/maker for a few quid in a charity soup. It was unused. But wow, what wonderful soups can be made in less than 30 minutes, chunky or smooth or in between. As I grow loads of veggies and freeze them in the winter I can live almost for free. Just use anything in the fridge or freezer, so no soup is the same. There is enough for 4 generous portions in each batch.
It was minus 45 here this past weekend (Alberta, Canada) THIS soup and nearly hugging my woodstove is how I survived, lol. I did add in red lentils which I hate with a passion but once blitzed in couldn't taste them tg, thought the added energy to fight the cold couldn't hurt, lol. HUGS.
Vivi, I do the same thing. I will figure up my cost per meal. I too, live alone so I generally make a meal for a family of four often and divide it to 4 servings. Then eat for 4 days. Tomato soup is so comforting and I love the little tomato chunks left in the soup 😋

It’s lunchtime now and you have inspired me to open a CAN ( I’m embarrassed to say 🫣🫣) of Campbells tomato soup . It’s all I have in an Emergent pinch !! Found you, subbed you! I like to do all my cooking from scratch. I cook in bulk so as to make freezer meals and large batches of veg, pastries ect. And I do watch those pennies so, you are right up my street do to say! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Love my soup maker, it makes 6 portions for me, put the chopped veg in with stock and 19 mins later its done and it can either be smooth or chunky yum yum
I agree how much less expensive and much better for you to make food from scratch. I love this time of year especially because you can put anything in soup. I also shop sales and eat seasonally for what we do not grow. I do find the more I make the harder it is to purchase ready made. I can't justify spending the money. Also I find concentrating on using every bit of food saves me money too. I buy less this way and no waste.
This is so true Vivi. Thank you for this video. I grow all my veg in 10x10m garden space. It is more than enough for the whole year for two people. I do go to the supermarket every 2-3 months.... maybe... If you eat seasonally, with a bit of practice, planning, and experience anyone can do it. Thanks for showing it is possible.
Wow,, this is an eye opener,, thanks for taking the time to make this video Vivi, I made a big pan of parsnip soup the other day from all my own ingredients grown on the allotment, apart from the stock cube and the grated cheese when it was cooked, it was really amazing, I’m retired and have the time to peel, chop and cook the veggies and I could probably afford to buy a tin of soup, but it boils down to the taste (pardon the pun), and knowing what’s inside it, people who are busy with work and children could bung all the ingredients into a slow cooker before they go to bed then switch it on in the morning and come home in the evening to a delicious soup that just needs blending, My hubbie said it was the best soup he’d ever tasted, result, lol, best wishes, Lisa
What an eye-opener! So many people say that its too expensive to eat whole - good food. Well you just proved them wrong. No preservatives, no color, no chemicals and so much cheaper too. All that's different is a little more time and a little more effort. Thank you for such a wonderful video.

When you think soups now are really pricey! Average price range is 68p for the cheapest soups?! I never purchase any Heinz products ever! I always shake tinned beans to know how much sauce is in them as I want beans not half tins but full tins of beans! Also I have always have kept a pantry store for bargain bulk buying items and dried good. 👍👍👍👍

Hi Vivi - your soup looks divine.....what I can't get my head around is from what you grow and the little you buy, how do you get enough calories? "What I eat in a day" would be a great video. With spouses and kids (especially teens), you cannot control how much they eat....my hubby and I would polish that soup off in one meal and wonder what the next course is....lol We are not overweight. Maybe high metabolisms or active. It would be a great video and maybe put off the naysayers who say you cannot buy so little and survive.
By the time I've added beans to this soup....plus a piece of bread and butter it's enough for me for lunch......I eat a larger meal in the evening......plus porridge in the morning with milled seeds.

Ach, so sorry you're going through this stress......I'm sure it's been a big shock for you. All of my recipes (in the 'In the Kitchen' playlist) can be made relatively cheaply.......plus I'll be doing a few more like this one with all the costings worked out. In the meantime do look into any help you might qualify for....I don't know where you are in the world but in the UK, for example, you may qualify for 'social tariffs' on some bills (water, internet etc), unemployment benefit etc......get an appointment with Citizens Advice (UK) and they can help you through the processes.

I make a small pot of tomato soup by mixing 1/2 can of tomato paste with about 2-3 cups of water, add some salt and basil, heat it up it's done. Much cheaper and better than canned soup. Or I blend a can of diced tomatoes, add salt and basil, done. You could add milk or cream if you like.
Hi Vi. Totally off topic…Couldn’t help noticing that lovely silverplate soup ladle. Do you collect vintage serving pieces? I can’t say no to a fancy Victorian spoon, fork or pie server. Usually VERY inexpensive because folk are afraid of the tarnish. Once found a heavily tarnished Geo Jensen 925 ladle for $1 (sold it on). I always keep a loupe in my purse now. WOW! What an eye opener in favor of even a small garden! Love your suggestions for tom soup additions. It’s now on my list to try this month. 🍅🍅 🍅💕
I don't collect vintage pieces per se.......but......I prefer a vintage piece (second hand = cheaper) made from a metal over anything plastic. Nearly all my kitchen stuff is vintage....hand-me-downs, gifts, flea market finds, charity shop finds etc.......I love that they have a story..... 💖
Great advice re Best Before Dates and Use By Dates - I have frozen the Marigold bouillon powder before when I saw a big tub on offer at a HUGE discount, and just used it direct from the freezer, and all was fine with it. 👍 Portion sizes are so odd in the UK - based on nutrition and calories rather than appetite and hunger... though even then they are ridiculous. I go for 650ml serving two of us, and they are the containers I have for the freezer. 👍 Those costings really show how much money people cane save... 3p!!!! 👍😊👍 Def will try the soup - was any water added? I may have missed that. 😁
I did think about getting that massive tub and putting it in the freezer.....but now I'm down to just one freezer there's no room. 😉 Yes, I added a litre of stock but for a thicker soup either add just 1/2 a litre....or a spud....or half a tin of chickpeas before whizzing up.

Great video for those who haven’t seen the difference home made can make. Of course so many variables but this shows if there’s a need, it can be done. That need may be financial, medical, anything - just like you say. Really enjoyed it. I’m making a (nice!) cabbage soup today but also a scotch broth (meat eater) which will help through this cold snap. We’re back to double figures next week 🤦🏼♀️

Thanks for the recipe. I am going to give it a try. Tomato soup is my favorite especially with a grilled cheese sandwich. :) Soups come either way in the States. Ready to eat is more expensive than the condensed. A serving of either is usually 1 cup, roughly 240 milliliters.
Honestly, I don’t particularly care for tomato soup. Probably because of the milk/cream in it. I don’t think they got together. But your recipe without it, sounds delicious. I like the simplicity. And adding the beans sounds wonderful. I think I will try it.
Love this Vivi. We are eating our own veg soup this week for lunches from leftover veg in the fridge. Little bit of chilli flakes home baked bread and it’s so delicious. Plus we know exactly what is in it. Love to see your evening meal costings so interesting lovely xx

I love making soup. As you say, such a good thing to have in the freezer, and so easy. I currently have a wonderful squash and ginger soup in the freezer, along with veg soup made with homemade turkey stock after Christmas (I'm not a veggie). They will soon be joined by some Jerusalem artichoke soup when I get round to making it.
Really interesting video 👍 I hope to get to a point growing my own stuff that I can harvest enough veggies to start making savings like this. Growing up, a midweek dinner when we didn’t have much in was something we called ‘pasta concoction’ own brand tin of soup, with cooked pasta and chopped tinned hotdogs in it, a little cheese grated on top sometimes too 🥰 it felt really special and comforting. I’ve since made a similar vegan version for my nephews, beans instead of hot dogs 😋. I just love beans added to soups 😍
Loved this video and recipe. I could eat soup all the time but my husband would want something a little more substantial. I did just have a bowl of delicious chili my husband made on Sunday. I love Heinz tomato soup…but the price now is beyond a joke. So i will be trying to make my own. I used to use a slimming world recipe for tomato soup which contained a tin of baked beans which was pretty good i must say
3p is amazing! £1.85 for the Heinz is shocking. I loved Heinz tomato soup as a child. Tried it as an adult after a gap and it was so thin and watery. Even with shop bought ingredients if you can't grow your own veg it is definitely worthwhile doing.
In eastern Europe it is still (I think... perhaps I am not up to date with latest trends...:-) quite normal to cook from scratch. At least we do it - I grow vegies, and my husband cooks every meal. I even bake our own bread. Not only cost-effective, but also no packaging, which is a lovely bonus in our garbage-covered world. I believe the answer to all of our modern world problems is in simplicity and quiet home-work, be it veg growing, sewing, cooking... It is such a wide topic. From "Nah, I do not feel like cooking today, lets buy a sryto-plate of ready meal" (and not only spend a lot of money, but also contribute to styro-garbage) to "Nah, I do not feel like mending old jeans, lets buy a new pair". And so the problem grows. Both financially and in so many other ways. I so much love what you talk about and how you talk about, Vivi :-) You are a star :-)
Lots of parsnip soup references in the comments, I had a parsnip crop failure this year😉. In my local supermarket yesterday, parsnips were 70p/kg, 20p more than carrots! The sweet potatoes were cheaper (about 60p/kg), I was amazed, all that travel and still cheaper than parsnips! The parsnips were were pretty spindly, perhaps the farmers didn't have a great year for parsnips either! Now a recipe for sweet potato soup perhaps🤔. Thanks for the video.

Hiya Vivi, oh ironically my fave comfort soup is Tomatoe orTomato lol. My choice Hienz it’s what I grew up with I’m guessing that may have something to do with the thought. Soo I did a wee bit of math btw most hate re the weekly cost my sums in Canadian monies would cost approximately $11. 03 ? Wow but if you choose not to add the can of water etc it would be double? . I make my own soup (not tomato .. I’m that weirdo that while I love tomatoes in every other way tomato soup gives me the ick ) but like to have a couple of tins for back up in the larder …. I’ve found Aldi to be the nicest and the cheapest … carrot and coriander and chicken noodle soup are my favs … obviously I realise that not everyone has an Aldi close and chicken noodle a no-no for veggies 😀😀 the price of branded soup horrifies me!! …. also you don’t want me ranting about the cost of corned beef (again not for vegetarians… sorry 😮)
My plot costs £2 per week......that is for rent, a few seeds and a bit of compost for seeds starts.....done. 😊 I don't purchase fertiliser or any other shop/manufactured chemicals.
@@WhatVivididnext Ah, I see. I thought you used chicken manure pellets. On my plot, I couldn’t get fertility levels up after the first two years production. Even with liquid & calcified seaweed and home made compost. I don’t know how other people do it. I was lucky that I didn’t suffer from many pests and diseases, but soil fertility was not good. I’m off the plot now. I might veg garden in the future but I’m off it for now.
@@AtheistEve Ah, yes, I forgot....I bought a big pot of pellets about three years ago........I still have loads left so forgot to include in the costs. Fortunately London clay soil is very fertile!
@@WhatVivididnext I gardened on clay too. The county is very productive, but I still couldn’t get nutrient/fertility levels up even with the seaweed, and the drought made everything worse. It was very disheartening. Meanwhile, the weeds had no problem. The other year the obvious culprit was the seed compost - which was abysmal. Nothing grew in it. This year I’ve not gardened. I miss it but also feel relieved not to be doing it (odd feeling).
Aldi do cream of tomato soup for 67p which isn’t to bad but my favorite is the Sainsbury’s one I find Heinz a bit sour tasting,Sainsbury’s is a bit thinner but I add rice to it,so tasty,I love how you live I couldn’t do it personally but I try to eat cheap and healthy,got a veg stew cooking this evening,with dumplings yum,big hugs to you Vivi ❤
I love this tomato soup! Beautiful. Question: shouldn’t you include the cost (proportionally) of the cost of growing your veg? Seeds, allotment rent, fertilizer? Don’t they also figure into the cost of your own veg? Just wondering..🙂
The seeds cost nothing as I save my own, I fertilise using my own urine so zero cost there but.......in terms of rent and a bit of compost it averages out at 14p per lunch and 14p per supper.
Oh I absolutely love soup! Anytime of year. I can’t imagine not making it myself…..more than no canned products have preservatives not to mention a bunch of sodium. P.S. the sound I so much better even with the freezer motor….😁…did you get a new microphone?
Tomato soup, my childhood soup for lunch. 😋❤️ Wish I could have more of them, unfortunately my reflux post cancer don’t admit me to have them anymore. Other soups go down easier, so I go for other vegetables. 😊 still a lot of good seasonal veggies to choose from, luckily! Had pasta with broccoli today.

Nicely done. Curious if you calculated the cost of growing the tomatoes: seed, compost (most of us have to buy), water (also cost in back yards/patios)? Probably too granular and fussy. 😊
Yes, I have calculated that too.......it works out at 14p per meal so I'll be factoring that in the next time I do a cooking video. BUT.........how many people pay 14p for their social club, their gym, their relaxation time etc........ne could exclude the cost on those grounds......
On the cans here it says best if used by whatever date,that doesn't mean that it won't be any good after that date.Actually the products are good for a few months after that date.

Home made is far better anyway! I do have two allotments also and I do grow a large variety of toms that I prep to flat bag and freeze. French onion soup is another cheap but great meal too! Easiest soup to make also. 🤘👍🤘🤘
Once the onion soup is almost ready cut some French stick thinly a little olive oil brush then grill lightly, place on top of you soup add grated cheese over the bread, then grill..Heaven in a bowl…👍👍👍👍
Tomato soup, piping hot with a sprinkling of grated cheese on top melting slowly into the hot soup and a chunk of dippy bread..then day 2 add aome red lentils and serve with a sprinkle of chilli flakes and a squeeze of lemon juice.... my tomorrow soup will be broccoli and a bit of Stilton left over from Christmas.... proper soup weather... brrrrrr...

I am in a wheelchair and can only be up in the wheelchair for about an hour and a half a day. I make all my own food because I like to cook. It's so nice to be able to cook 4 days worth of food at a time. I try to cook one meal a day to last 3 or 4 days. It helps out with my health to do it this way and give me a reason to get up. I am really enjoying your channel.

The cost of labor and transport is in the 30p for the shop bought soup; the people who picked the crops, drove it to the processor, processed it, drove it to the shop, people in the shop, etc. plus the people who made the cans and the labels and boxes. The cost of labor is not in your 3p per serving for your home grown. It helps me to keep that in mind when I run out of what I’ve grown and need to go buy canned food, that I need to respect those people.
There are a lot of soups in the grocery stores (UK) that have modified corn starch, we never buy them! We always check labels. We're getting better at growing our own veg. so this year I was throwing gallon bags of cut up veg into the freezer (we invested in a huge freezer from Curries, its been a Godsend!), so I tried an experiment. I took one day in autumn, pulled all the bags out and had an assembly line to fill new gallon bags with a handful of each veg, not all the way full, zip it up and back into the freezer. When I want to make soup, I take one bag, throw it in the instant pot (fills about to halfway mark), add 8c water, two low or no salt boullion cubes, 1c red lentils, black pepper, 2 bay leaves, 1 tsp rosemary, 1 tsp thyme, 1 tsp basil, 2 tsp parsley or dried carrot greens. If my bag was lacking certain veg I add it now, fresh or frozen. Cook High Pressure 10 min. Natural release or release at 20-30 min. Take out bay leaves, blitz with stick blender just a bit. Now if I have pre cooked homegrown beans in the freezer, I thaw while ipot is cooking, and add them at the end or heat a drained tin of beans and add before blending. This makes 6 deep, big bowls of soup! We eat one now and the rest go in the freezer. Non of the veg are blanched first, I even put potatoes in, all veg are washed, trimmed and cut ready to use. I use potatoes, carrots, celery, leeks, onion, garlic, squash, zucchini (courgette), parsnips, whatever you have going. I can't tell you how great it feels to eat a good tasting healthy soup, all organic because you grew it yourself!! All the herbs but the basil we grew, no polytunnel or greenhouse for any of it either, in the Scottish Borders. If you've got kale or cabbage or brassica leaves, throw them in too. I also dry lots of greens, especially brassicas, in mesh bags over the radiator, then grind to powder and keep in jars. This stuff is great to add 1-2 T to soups. I hope this inspires someone to try it, so easy!

Very helpful information on how to combine your harvest with soup making. This kind on detailed concrete information will be so helpful to me as I work at making healthy meals on a slim budget.
Mashing the tomatoes with a potato masher really works if no blender and adding a sprinkle of thyme is lovely. Also a bay leaf while cooking. French onion soup is lovely too and cheap. Make your own crutons to add.

I used to be a fan of Campbell's condensed tomato soup but then I began making my own and cannot stand the commercial stuff now. So many chemicals, too salty and a metallic taste. It is amazing to hear the cost differences! Thank you for taking the time to work all that out for our education.

My favorite! Give it a try Vivi, two slices of bread with 2-3 thin slice of cheese, toast it in the pan until the cheese is melted. This is one of my meals for dinner. Oh to have the energy to make my own soup more often. It’s taken me three days to make a stock tomato sauce for the freezer. Still I have 12 portions of basic sauce now that can be adapted for chilli or bolognese sauce. It’s lovely knowing what’s in the food, the worst part of buying pre-made is all the additives. Very interesting, and the homemade soup is the best I assume. I just make some easy dinners during the week, if I dont have leftovers, or premade dinners to heat up. I recently bought an airfryer, was sceptical if i was going to use it much. Now it is a really good help. Today I seasoned 2 chicken breasts, put them in the airfryer, and added it to a salad kit from the super market. Feeds 3 of us. It is so good, and my more healthy fast food. 🙂
I’d never be without my air fryer. In fact,I shelled out and bought another one to use alongside it over Christmas. Saving so much on fuel.

This is excellent. I'll be making this soon. I may add: a potato for creaminess, cooked beens, cooked chopped bacon/cooked crumbled sausage, cooked cut green beans, etc. It will still be cheaper and far tastier than any tinned soup!!
I recently bought can condensed Campbell's tomato soup for 60 cents. Here in massachusetts that would generally cost $1.39. I finely diced carrots, celery and onion in a bit of olive oil. When soft I added 2 cups water and some thyme. Then I added the condensed soup. Two good size servings for about $1 to $1.50. Most of our soups are homemade but I occasionally use soups ive bought on sale for convenience or emergencies (too sick to cook much). Sometimes I make Greek lemon soup starting with canned chicken and rice. I add a can and a half to two cans of rice, bit of leftover chicken or rice if ive got it, some lemon juice and then a beaten egg after its been heated awhile.

❤❤❤ This video is truly an eye opener. That's why, since I've had my allotment, I've been using a lot of my own vegetables to make soups. What almost no one around me can or wants to understand: “Soups, how boring!” But luckily they are my soups, not hers. And so far I've never thrown any of it away. Which makes me very proud. Nothing beats hot soup on a cold winter day. Just don't forget to get them out of the freezer in good time.

Great video, Vivi 👏🏻 re the can of soup portions and serving 2, this is how they (Heinz) get around the salt, E number content etc in the tin ie the amount of these in a tin are over the "recommended " amounts for 1 person so they say it's for two, thus halving the numbers. Hope that puts it into more perspective - because I don't know anyone who splits a tin of soup 😉😄❤

I used to run a cafe and always had a good selection of 'from scrattch' meals, including soups. I say you'd make a successful cafe proprietor.
I do make tomato soup. Anything tomato wins me over. I grow a years supply of tomatoes for sauce and generally just turn a basic pasta sauce into soup. As I finished the video I made the soup as you instructed although I like my Italian herbs and extra thyme in mine. It's really lovely with the carrots, onion and celery and so much more nourishing.
A good and cheap addition would be to have cooked lentils in the freezer for padding it out with extra nutrients. I soak a big batch over night then rinse really well, cook off and then freeze for ease when I'm feeling a bit rushed.
I gave up on tinned soups years ago and having bought some recently they will only ever be in storage for emergencies as they all taste awful really and have lots of unnecessary 'fillers'.
It would be great to have a monthly soup video Vivi, I'm certain this could really catch on.
You could make the soup according to the veg in season or what is on offer. I was disappointed to find nowhere had pumpkins the day after Halloween as I had planned to make up cheap pumpkin soups for the freezer. My home grown didn't go as well this year.
I'm all for a bit of padding and have certainly added lentils from time-to-time to make a more substantial meal. Hahaha......a soup a month.....funny you should say that s I am planning another comparison soup next month! 😉

Hi Vivi, if you didn't want to eat the canned tomato soup you could make a pasta sauce with it. My Mother used to make home made spaghetti with it. We preferred her to store bought.
I bought an electric soup kettle/maker for a few quid in a charity soup. It was unused. But wow, what wonderful soups can be made in less than 30 minutes, chunky or smooth or in between. As I grow loads of veggies and freeze them in the winter I can live almost for free. Just use anything in the fridge or freezer, so no soup is the same. There is enough for 4 generous portions in each batch.

It was minus 45 here this past weekend (Alberta, Canada) THIS soup and nearly hugging my woodstove is how I survived, lol. I did add in red lentils which I hate with a passion but once blitzed in couldn't taste them tg, thought the added energy to fight the cold couldn't hurt, lol. HUGS.

I agree how much less expensive and much better for you to make food from scratch. I love this time of year especially because you can put anything in soup. I also shop sales and eat seasonally for what we do not grow. I do find the more I make the harder it is to purchase ready made. I can't justify spending the money. Also I find concentrating on using every bit of food saves me money too. I buy less this way and no waste.

I do go to the supermarket every 2-3 months.... maybe... If you eat seasonally, with a bit of practice, planning, and experience anyone can do it. Thanks for showing it is possible.

Wow,, this is an eye opener,, thanks for taking the time to make this video Vivi, I made a big pan of parsnip soup the other day from all my own ingredients grown on the allotment, apart from the stock cube and the grated cheese when it was cooked, it was really amazing, I’m retired and have the time to peel, chop and cook the veggies and I could probably afford to buy a tin of soup, but it boils down to the taste (pardon the pun), and knowing what’s inside it, people who are busy with work and children could bung all the ingredients into a slow cooker before they go to bed then switch it on in the morning and come home in the evening to a delicious soup that just needs blending,
My hubbie said it was the best soup he’d ever tasted, result, lol,

When you think soups now are really pricey! Average price range is 68p for the cheapest soups?! I never purchase any Heinz products ever! I always shake tinned beans to know how much sauce is in them as I want beans not half tins but full tins of beans! Also I have always have kept a pantry store for bargain bulk buying items and dried good. 👍👍👍👍

Hi Vivi - your soup looks divine.....what I can't get my head around is from what you grow and the little you buy, how do you get enough calories? "What I eat in a day" would be a great video. With spouses and kids (especially teens), you cannot control how much they eat....my hubby and I would polish that soup off in one meal and wonder what the next course is....lol We are not overweight. Maybe high metabolisms or active. It would be a great video and maybe put off the naysayers who say you cannot buy so little and survive.
By the time I've added beans to this soup....plus a piece of bread and butter it's enough for me for lunch......I eat a larger meal in the evening......plus porridge in the morning with milled seeds.

Ach, so sorry you're going through this stress......I'm sure it's been a big shock for you. All of my recipes (in the 'In the Kitchen' playlist) can be made relatively cheaply.......plus I'll be doing a few more like this one with all the costings worked out. In the meantime do look into any help you might qualify for....I don't know where you are in the world but in the UK, for example, you may qualify for 'social tariffs' on some bills (water, internet etc), unemployment benefit etc......get an appointment with Citizens Advice (UK) and they can help you through the processes.

Can’t stand tomato soup, but made a great beetroot soup this week. Added some parsnips too as was given them. Yummy!
I make a small pot of tomato soup by mixing 1/2 can of tomato paste with about 2-3 cups of water, add some salt and basil, heat it up it's done. Much cheaper and better than canned soup. Or I blend a can of diced tomatoes, add salt and basil, done. You could add milk or cream if you like.
Hi Vi. Totally off topic…Couldn’t help noticing that lovely silverplate soup ladle. Do you collect vintage serving pieces? I can’t say no to a fancy Victorian spoon, fork or pie server. Usually VERY inexpensive because folk are afraid of the tarnish. Once found a heavily tarnished Geo Jensen 925 ladle for $1 (sold it on). I always keep a loupe in my purse now.

I don't collect vintage pieces per se.......but......I prefer a vintage piece (second hand = cheaper) made from a metal over anything plastic. Nearly all my kitchen stuff is vintage....hand-me-downs, gifts, flea market finds, charity shop finds etc.......I love that they have a story..... 💖
Great advice re Best Before Dates and Use By Dates - I have frozen the Marigold bouillon powder before when I saw a big tub on offer at a HUGE discount, and just used it direct from the freezer, and all was fine with it. 👍 Portion sizes are so odd in the UK - based on nutrition and calories rather than appetite and hunger... though even then they are ridiculous. I go for 650ml serving two of us, and they are the containers I have for the freezer. 👍 Those costings really show how much money people cane save... 3p!!!! 👍😊👍 Def will try the soup - was any water added? I may have missed that. 😁
I did think about getting that massive tub and putting it in the freezer.....but now I'm down to just one freezer there's no room. 😉 Yes, I added a litre of stock but for a thicker soup either add just 1/2 a litre....or a spud....or half a tin of chickpeas before whizzing up.

Great video for those who haven’t seen the difference home made can make. Of course so many variables but this shows if there’s a need, it can be done. That need may be financial, medical, anything - just like you say. Really enjoyed it. I’m making a (nice!) cabbage soup today but also a scotch broth (meat eater) which will help through this cold snap. We’re back to double figures next week 🤦🏼♀️

Soups come either way in the States. Ready to eat is more expensive than the condensed. A serving of either is usually 1 cup, roughly 240 milliliters.

I love making soup. As you say, such a good thing to have in the freezer, and so easy. I currently have a wonderful squash and ginger soup in the freezer, along with veg soup made with homemade turkey stock after Christmas (I'm not a veggie). They will soon be joined by some Jerusalem artichoke soup when I get round to making it.

Growing up, a midweek dinner when we didn’t have much in was something we called ‘pasta concoction’ own brand tin of soup, with cooked pasta and chopped tinned hotdogs in it, a little cheese grated on top sometimes too 🥰 it felt really special and comforting. I’ve since made a similar vegan version for my nephews, beans instead of hot dogs 😋. I just love beans added to soups 😍
Ooooh, that does sound comforting! My version of comfort food from the shops is beans on toast with grated cheese on top.......heaven! 😉

Loved this video and recipe. I could eat soup all the time but my husband would want something a little more substantial. I did just have a bowl of delicious chili my husband made on Sunday. We are really cold here in North

Here in the Netherlands my allotment costs include rent, seeds etc. are €12,50 per month.. What are your costs? Delicious soup! 😊
The whole year, for rent, sees and a bit of compost is £100.....about £8.50 per month.

I love Heinz tomato soup…but the price now is beyond a joke. So i will be trying to make my own. I used to use a slimming world recipe for tomato soup which contained a tin of baked beans which was pretty good i must say
Beans as an addition to tomato soup is one of my go-to meals.....I love it!
3p is amazing! £1.85 for the Heinz is shocking. I loved Heinz tomato soup as a child. Tried it as an adult after a gap and it was so thin and watery. Even with shop bought ingredients if you can't grow your own veg it is definitely worthwhile doing.

In eastern Europe it is still (I think... perhaps I am not up to date with latest trends...:-) quite normal to cook from scratch. At least we do it - I grow vegies, and my husband cooks every meal. I even bake our own bread. Not only cost-effective, but also no packaging, which is a lovely bonus in our garbage-covered world. I believe the answer to all of our modern world problems is in simplicity and quiet home-work, be it veg growing, sewing, cooking... It is such a wide topic. From "Nah, I do not feel like cooking today, lets buy a sryto-plate of ready meal" (and not only spend a lot of money, but also contribute to styro-garbage) to "Nah, I do not feel like mending old jeans, lets buy a new pair". And so the problem grows. Both financially and in so many other ways. I so much love what you talk about and how you talk about, Vivi :-) You are a star :-)

Lots of parsnip soup references in the comments, I had a parsnip crop failure this year😉. In my local supermarket yesterday, parsnips were 70p/kg, 20p more than carrots! The sweet potatoes were cheaper (about 60p/kg), I was amazed, all that travel and still cheaper than parsnips! The parsnips were were pretty spindly, perhaps the farmers didn't have a great year for parsnips either! Now a recipe for sweet potato soup perhaps🤔.

Hiya Vivi, oh ironically my fave comfort soup is Tomatoe orTomato lol. My choice Hienz it’s what I grew up with I’m guessing that may have something to do with the thought. Soo I did a wee bit of math btw most hate re the weekly cost my sums in Canadian monies would cost approximately $11. 03 ? Wow but if you choose not to add the can of water etc it would be double? . I make my own soup (not tomato .. I’m that weirdo that while I love tomatoes in every other way tomato soup gives me the ick ) but like to have a couple of tins for back up in the larder …. I’ve found Aldi to be the nicest and the cheapest … carrot and coriander and chicken noodle soup are my favs … obviously I realise that not everyone has an Aldi close and chicken noodle a no-no for veggies 😀😀 the price of branded soup horrifies me!! …. also you don’t want me ranting about the cost of corned beef (again not for vegetarians… sorry 😮)
The only extras to add for the home grown would be fertilizer, compost and rent for an allotment, if no garden.
My plot costs £2 per week......that is for rent, a few seeds and a bit of compost for seeds starts.....done. 😊 I don't purchase fertiliser or any other shop/manufactured chemicals.
@@WhatVivididnext Ah, I see. I thought you used chicken manure pellets. On my plot, I couldn’t get fertility levels up after the first two years production. Even with liquid & calcified seaweed and home made compost. I don’t know how other people do it. I was lucky that I didn’t suffer from many pests and diseases, but soil fertility was not good. I’m off the plot now. I might veg garden in the future but I’m off it for now.
@@AtheistEve Ah, yes, I forgot....I bought a big pot of pellets about three years ago........I still have loads left so forgot to include in the costs. Fortunately London clay soil is very fertile!
@@WhatVivididnext I gardened on clay too. The county is very productive, but I still couldn’t get nutrient/fertility levels up even with the seaweed, and the drought made everything worse. It was very disheartening. Meanwhile, the weeds had no problem. The other year the obvious culprit was the seed compost - which was abysmal. Nothing grew in it. This year I’ve not gardened. I miss it but also feel relieved not to be doing it (odd feeling).

Aldi do cream of tomato soup for 67p which isn’t to bad but my favorite is the Sainsbury’s one I find Heinz a bit sour tasting,Sainsbury’s is a bit thinner but I add rice to it,so tasty,I love how you live I couldn’t do it personally but I try to eat cheap and healthy,got a veg stew cooking this evening,with dumplings yum,big hugs to you Vivi ❤

I love this tomato soup! Beautiful. Question: shouldn’t you include the cost (proportionally) of the cost of growing your veg? Seeds, allotment rent, fertilizer? Don’t they also figure into the cost of your own veg? Just wondering..🙂
The seeds cost nothing as I save my own, I fertilise using my own urine so zero cost there but.......in terms of rent and a bit of compost it averages out at 14p per lunch and 14p per supper.
Oh I absolutely love soup! Anytime of year. I can’t imagine not making it myself…..more than no canned products have preservatives not to mention a bunch of sodium. P.S. the sound I so much better even with the freezer motor….😁…did you get a new microphone?

Wish I could have more of them, unfortunately my reflux post cancer don’t admit me to have them anymore. Other soups go down easier, so I go for other vegetables. 😊 still a lot of good seasonal veggies to choose from, luckily! Had pasta with broccoli today.

Nicely done. Curious if you calculated the cost of growing the tomatoes: seed, compost (most of us have to buy), water (also cost in back yards/patios)? Probably too granular and fussy. 😊
Yes, I have calculated that too.......it works out at 14p per meal so I'll be factoring that in the next time I do a cooking video. BUT.........how many people pay 14p for their social club, their gym, their relaxation time etc........ne could exclude the cost on those grounds......
On the cans here it says best if used by whatever date,that doesn't mean that it won't be any good after that date.Actually the products are good for a few months after that date.

Awww, I love my little butter dish......it was a gift from a friend (it's Danish, like her) 20 years ago as a house warming gift for this flat. 😊
Home made is far better anyway! I do have two allotments also and I do grow a large variety of toms that I prep to flat bag and freeze. French onion soup is another cheap but great meal too! Easiest soup to make also. 🤘👍🤘🤘

Once the onion soup is almost ready cut some French stick thinly a little olive oil brush then grill lightly, place on top of you soup
add grated cheese over the bread, then grill..Heaven in a bowl…👍👍👍👍

Love fresh tomato soup!
Tomato soup, piping hot with a sprinkling of grated cheese on top melting slowly into the hot soup and a chunk of dippy bread..then day 2 add aome red lentils and serve with a sprinkle of chilli flakes and a squeeze of lemon juice.... my tomorrow soup will be broccoli and a bit of Stilton left over from Christmas.... proper soup weather... brrrrrr...
