Fun vid, thx. I am an arborist, here in Newport RI. Remove the 3 Ds….deadwood, diseased wood, and damaged wood. Be more drastic at first. Branches best not touching eachother. Think airflow. ….and when in full leaf….airflow. Lichen is not a problem. When done, give it the pretty test. Prune more if needed for attractive profile, and balance. Fruit trees…..can't hurt them.

From what I have read, beavers on your land would be so beneficial to it. Adding aquatic life and a different variety of plant and animal life. Plus they would be amazing to watch and live around. IMO they would add more than take from your land. I love how you are beautifying the waters edge and bringing it into your cabin life.

Tyler that stuff, as you call it, growing on your fruit trees, and I suspect is on other trees too, is lichen. You have at least two species there. Not bad stuff but a positive indicator of good air quality and old trees. As another viewer said you can prune them pretty radically and they will respond positively. At the same time fertilize with the appropriate food, for example bone meal.
beavers are extremely good at slowing down water, 😊thus reducing erosion and storing water for drier periods. They also remove trees and shrubs which is good for the environment while producing habitat for a variety of species. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t trap them but do it with forethought and judiciously. Trapping requires a trapping licence, so look into that.
I’m pretty sure you don’t have partridge more likely grouse.

Apple trees that have been let go need a 3 year plan. If you get carried away on one prune they will sucker like crazy. Think a vase shape, no verticals you want horizontals so picking fruit is easy. Apples are related to roses.

Barkeeper’s friend is the name of the best product to clean that old sink. It will turn it pristine white, but wear gloves. It’s tough on your hands. I bought a house with a stained porcelain tub. It made it look like a new tub. You can then reglaze it if needed.
On pruning…typically never more than a third of the branches, but google it. Sometimes with an old tree, you can do a suicide squeeze where you almost cut it all down and then let it come back from the roots. Obviously, that’s a last resort for a tree that can’t be saved any other way.

How many varied well thought out projects you have.Great investments you have made for powering the cabin. The bike should help some with the back and forth....maybe we can jury-rig a trailer of sorts coming off the rear axle.Be nice to de-stone ,flatten out that road.Maybe an old farm tractor could drag a furrow bar behind it or something.Thats Dobby's department, you have enough to do.Ice to see you enjoy your place, watch a show, put your feet up....a hot shower too ? If the beavers made you ponds or lakes out of your streams you'd have fish and frogs to eat regularly....I heard Beavers are really hard to get rid of.Once in they want to stay

Hi Tyler, Another great video! It's a privilege to witness you living your dream -- thanks for sharing! I sense that you've shifted past living on your land, to now living "into it" ... meaning, you're thinking about how you will interact with the natural ecosystem around you, and what it can offer you. As you are a thoughtful person, with appreciation and awe for nature, you might be interested in this mini documentary (very brief) about how certain kinds of animals influence the physical landscape, and how eliminating (or reintroducing) one kind of animal can have major consequences for others. As you've seen, beavers are excellent landscape engineers (no doubt about that one - we had beavers "landscaping" our streams for decades!), and at first glance as landowners, it's easy to be alarmed by their impacts and classify their presence as solely "destructive". But from a zoomed-out (ecosystem-level) perspective, we learned how the healthy habitat beavers create for other species, and the role beavers play in maintaining healthy natural ecosystems is amazing. All of this is just to say, beaver-created habitat brings in many others species, including some that may turn out to be of even greater benefit to you. See what you (and Dobby) think! Check this out. th-cam.com/video/ysa5OBhXz-Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=EWpkxc8-G4e6znAy Cheers, Lee

I agree to contact the uni about pruning those trees. But I'm in Alberta and had my Apple trees pruned by an aborist who said, keep the branches growing downwards or outwards, prune off the ones growing upwards or inwards. This promotes air circulation and reduces the risk of an apple tree growing too tall to harvest. He would also only prune back to a maximum of 1/3. My trees were quite old and unpruned when we bought the property though. Before he pruned I could pick red delicious apples from my 2nd story window, that tree was taller then my very tall house. My yard smells wonderful i the spring. I Love what you are doing to the place! Keep up the good work.

You can build a ram pump from common pipe from a hardware store. Leave a 1/4 inch nub on fruit trees, you need to find the strongest leader limbs and encourage their growth by removing weaker limbs. A few minutes on every trip chucking larger rocks and filling in ruts,in time you raod will be nice and smooth.

I don't know if I'm quite saying it correctly or successful but usually Beavers have this need to make water stop and make other places water so that way more activity comes into your land not less I would check that out and study that before you start snaring Beavers because apparently everybody's bringing the Beavers back because they're great ecosystems that they built. So check out a fruit tree pruning site. Your trees by looking at them, need the long branches, cut back by half. Any branch that crosses another, cut it out. Air circulation is vital to minimize disease. Lichen and moss on some trees is not unusual, especially in a maritime climate. BC gulf islands and Vancouver Island has lots of trees with lichens. My son is a fruit tree pruner in Victoria, BC. His advise for rehabilitation of older trees is to cut back only 50% of what needs to be remediated to reshape a tree in anyone year.

Hi Tyler, When we go Car camping, we have a limit of water. Soooooo, How we clean dishes I learned from YT channel "playing with sticks". When I saw how simple, I also realized, of course, why didn't I think of that. I already use...mix together: 1/3 white vinegar, 1/3 rubbing alcohol (99%), 1/3 water, to clean my house and floors. The healthiest, chemical free, and cheaper way to clean. I place it in a spray bottle. Maybe this will make doing dishes at your place easier too. Note: clean right away makes it easier too. Wipe them off, spray and whip. Use one of those flat 2 inch square flat scrapper things for hard stuff. I love seeing your progress, so excited for you. Wishing you all the best.

Take between 10-20% of the overall canopy off in any one winter. If you have pruned too hard, your tree is likely to produce vigorous upright branches called watershoots. This isn’t ideal as they crowd the crown. Watershoots growing in a convenient place - e.g. filling a gap - can be pruned by about third to encourage branching. Otherwise, remove watershoots from their point of origin. The majority of the fruiting wood should be quite young - one to four years old, which is the wood that fruits best. Create an open centre to your tree. This allows more light into the canopy to ripen the shoots and fruit. Improved air movement discourages diseases. Don't worry about the lichen - I think yours is mainly 'reindeer lichen'. You can take some off by hand as you steady yourself when pruning! Think twice before cutting into branches that are more than 10-12cm (4-5in) in diameter but if you need to prune them try to do so at a fork in the limb where there will be narrower branches. Once you're on top of it, you'll find that no more than 12-20 cuts a year is all that's needed. Glad you have the e-bike which may help a little - but even gladder you have the prospect of a hot shower!

As for your two apple trees, if you don’t get any advice from anyone, I’d probably prune just one tree pretty heavily in winter. (Just to see) I prune my peach and apricot trees using common sense. Looks like your plans are starting to come together. Not without graft. Not sure about the pruning so much, but if you have lichen growth on the tree could be down to poor fertilisation. I had an olive tree in a pot which had gotten a lot of algae and yellow lichen on it. Did some research which suggested the bark should renew itself if the tree is healthy. Maybe different on your apple trees. I’d neglected the soil condition for sometime, so after fertilising it with manure and some fresh compost/mulch it’s looking much better. The lichen and algae has gone.

Its good that you are looking into the ram pump idea , sch. 40 irrigation pipe works good keep it weighted down with rocks , build a little dam at the intake , you can build a ram pump yourself too very simple . keep on keeping on .

Nice video things and your plans look great. One thing I personally would like in the future is a heads up at the beginning of certain videos. I believe that any person that lives off the land or uses anything they take from it is cool. That being said I don't want to watch videos with animals or their habitat being upended. If ya need to eat animals on your land or repair or correct damage they have or are doing to the land that's living off the land. I understand and agree that it is necessary to do so, but I don't want to watch it in a video. So a heads up that a video is going to include hunting or trapping animals or destruction of their domicile would be great. I let friends hunt on my land because they use the whole animal not just for a trophy, only rule is I don't want to see it. Basically I see beavers as cute little lumberjacks with cool lake front property because they don't affect my daily life. Anyhoo video's are looking good and I'm enjoying watching them thanx.

You should really consider hydropower with that stream that runs down hill. You would have constant power.

Just a suggestion from experience, build a bit of a roof/shelter over the top. It doesn’t like you getting precipitation down the exhaust/chimney. I leave mine outside most of the time but I cover it with a garbage bag when I am away. No need to let Mother Nature wear in down unnecessarily

Tyler, since you have so much good flowing water, you should really look into micro😢hydro..
Should give you more electricity than you can use, and enough to warm water and charge your batteries, without the need for propane, summer and winter
