- Replacing a Tesla drive unit, which is also found in other vehicles besides Teslas, can come with a hefty price tag. It usually involves installing a complete new or re-manufactured unit. However, in many cases, they can be repaired.
Join us in this video as we bring you the firsthand experience of a step-by-step Tesla drive unit removal and repair demonstration conducted by Precision Auto Service, a reputable repair shop in Langley, B.C., renowned for their expertise in hybrid and EV repairs.
The background music is incredibly annoying
Came here to say this
And similar to that whining noise😂
I bailed out of the video at the 6:00 mark because of the "music".
Yep!
Yep. Garbage misic.
good video
remove the music and you will be happier.
Good video pity about the background noise.
Interesting video but terribly annoying music, Shame!
I loved the video, and all of the content as shown. It was really clear (to me) that the Bearings that are under the most arduous conditions, are those which are situated inside the Motor, which carries the Rotor. I was alarmed to see the condition of these Bearings, and it didn't surprise me how the EV would "squeal" whilst driving it. As the narrator said: "The Bearings are subjected to very high rotational speeds", and he is referring to the Rotor Bearings. The Rotor Bearings are the Sealed Type, which means that the only lubrication these Bearings get, is when they are loaded by SKF during manufacture. Usually, these Bearings are filled with a medium - type grease. Under these loads of heat and speed, the miniscule - amount of medium grease will escape through the Bearing Seals, and then the Bearing is in trouble....... I have seen this (fretting) many times before in Industry. I used to carefully 'pick out' the steel Seal at just one side of a new Bearing. I would then wash-out all of the medium grease from the new bearing, and then blow-dry. I would then re-fill the Bearing with a specialized High Temperature Grease, placing 2X the amount that the Bearing Manufacturer originally placed inside. Then refit the Bearing Seal. Those Motor Bearings will reach high temperatures when operating the EV at full speed for lengthy periods. By replacing the grease, with a Hi- Temp variety, could keep that Motor operating much longer, before failure. I used to get up to 4X Bearing Life by doing this. Greetings from Australia.
Thanks
That music is hideous! Video is good, please just let original audio shop background play instead!
So we can hear the 80's rock radio station?
@@jhfl188180s rock is great.
Great video, but the background music is difficult to indure.
PLEASE CAN THE ANNOYING FOREGROUND MUSIC
I agree that the music during most of the video is annoying but hearing Kim Wilde at the end was nice.
Great video. Horrible music. Super annoying. Please avoid using it 🙏
This is an educational video. You do not need the music.
worst background music ever
The music is intrusive and not needed
Sorry, the loud obnoxious music made it unwatchable.
Great video, awful music. This same drive unit, with the same problem, was used in the Mercedes B Class Electric (aka B250). Fix is for Mercedes to order new drive unit from Tesla. With installation this is a $17,000 repair. Problem appears between 35-40k miles. A real shame as car is great otherwise.
look`s like a backyard mechanic could do it
So the design uses bearings NOT rated for the speed that the gears are designed for? Go to Pratt and Whitney and get some Jet engine bearings that go to 100000 rpm and use those.
I agree with you, lots of bullshit comments to sound knowledgeable. Lots of wrong assessment. Looking at the oil there is absolutely no cross contamination with coolant. They should have pressurized the oil section to 5 psi via the drain plugs. I feel so sorry for the car owner. The bearing might of been gone but this technician was only guessing stuff. No need to go for a road test a simple 8$ stethoscope would of help finding if the bearing that he change in this video was at fault. Keep on the good work but don't lie to your customers. Assume your bad assessment, assume the time the shop lost due to lack of knowledge. Keep on the good work.
I rather hear the screw, bolt, warehouse noises rather then this absurb song..!!!
It is crazy that someone could design a motor / inverter unit where it was possible for coolant to get into the motor windings or the inverter electronics if a seal failed. As an electrical and electronics engineer I can think of many ways to avoid this.
You arent thinking like a corporate sales person who wants things to die a premature death to sell either new parts or new cars.
@@stephenw2992 Correct. I have ethics and I believe things should be designed to last - much as they were years ago. I realize if I ran a manufacturing business that way I would probably do myself out of future sales, so I am fortunate I don't!
@@sw6188 You would have great brand loyalty though and some customers for life. Most people think too short term these days and have moved to the next employer by the time people realise they design crap.
@@stephenw2992 Yes, I would have brand loyalty for sure, but I wouldn't want to be a manufacturer these days. The first thing that would happen is china would copy my designs and produce my products for a tenth of the cost and with bad quality. I'm quite happy doing what I do which is on the service/repair/custom design side of electronics.
Really nice video on the removal and teardown of a Toyota EV motor trans axle. It makes the job look easy as long as you have the equipment. My diesel truck engine is a lot more difficult to remove and teardown especially the transmission rebuild.
Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺 very clear and concise.
Well explained and interesting throughout. New electronic technology combined with the same old fluids and bearings. Fascinating stuff….
Great showing…thank you very much
You Sir just earned a new subscriber. Much appreciated insight 👍
His hat is well protected by his safety glasses. His eyes, they’re on their own.
Safety contact lenses.
Great video, very informative !! Would like to know the cost of repair though.
Great DIY tutorial 👍
So how much does this repair cost vs. a new or used drive unit? Where are you located if someone wants to ship a unit to you for repair?
"Safety disconnect buried under the front seat?????" Why wouldin't it be a GREAT BIG FRICKIN RED KNOB IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DASH??
It's just for service
Great video and I LOVE the music!
very informative. Thank you
Teslas never go wrong we were all told which made them better than ICE cars which do and require far more maintenance.
They haven't been on the road long enough to go wrong yet, duh.
Yup what about all the soy wiring in Mercedes that ALL failed for many years with no warranty. $5000 repair and the car just dies
Looks straightforward.
It doesn't look like the failure mode you describe was this drive units problem. There didn't look like there was any coolant contamination in the transaxle. From what I saw in the video it looks like a motor bearing failure that appears to have happened due to lack of lubrication (loss of factory lubricant). Great video! 🙂
What is the mileage on this failed unit
A friend of mine has rewinded a Tesla motor a couple of years ago, the car still runs perfectly
I wonder how much the bearings change will cost. When this all started the electric car companies said they had many fewer parts than a gasoline car and that there was no maintenance. I had my doubts from the start. No EV for me....
With all of the work to get to the bad bearings, why wouldn't replace all of the bearings when you have it apart?
Nice video!
Can you please tell me where to buy the upgraded cooling seal piece? Can this be ussed on a classic rear large unit of a Tesla Model S P85+?
If one tiny cap or mosfet on any one of the boards running the inverter crap the bed, this thing is toast.. I did lol too at the "UpGraded cooling manifold". It works by not doing any cooling. "Yoou don't need to worry about cooling..." New roller-skate grade bearings and she's mint again.
6:07 When verifying if there’s high voltage one should assume that there is. This method is dangerous. Just imaging that there’s 400V on these poles and you’d connect the chassis with them via the unshielded probes.
The gloves will keep your hands clean but they won’t isolate you from high voltages.
These are just some of very basic precautions to be taken imo.
I do appreciate that you repair these drivetrains though!
There not connected to the chassis they are floating from the chassis which is why he must test for DC across the leads. It any voltage leaks to chassis it creats a Ground Fault and the car is shut down automatically so no one gets killed.
@@PlymouthVT Ok but my point is about the lack of proper isolating gloves and test equipment.
When probing the leads (or anything for that matter) one must assume that there’s high voltage on the test object.
@@Conservator. I agree. But it seems these guys have been in these motors many times.
@@PlymouthVT So far everything went well. It only takes one time if it doesn’t go well and they wouldn’t share a video such an event.
400V should be respected and imo they didn’t.
Had to stop watching. Unbearable music !
You can mute
Yeah well then you miss the commentary. Music was very annoying. I’d rather hear the wrenching.
@@cmarshall2211mute and subtitle lol
Great video, but how much the labor and parts ?
I'm curious how the bearings bathed in oil could be destroyed by a coolant leak if the oil drained appears to be uncontaminated by coolant. And the bearings that the tech suspected of being the culprit had no oil at all, hence the rust/dust in that area.
Hellish music..good vid
I often comment on stupid or loud music myself when viewing videos. But [ WEIRD ] I was so engaged, I did not notice what so many others had commented on wrt to the background/foreground presence of music.
So interesting by comparison to see that removing that drive unit was still fiddly but SO MUCH easier than dropping an ICE plant.
Hopefully the auto engineers can make it all even more simple in the future because cost of repair is in the front of my mind right now.
I am a regular viewer of "rainman ray's repairs", and the pain and grief he goes through to change even a timing belt or coolant pump on some cars makes me wonder if there are any sane and practical design engineers remaining in the ICE car OEM industry.
that upright uncovered inverter reminds me of the trash can mac pro. does tesla make the schematics available?
Single point failure and you have water in the inverter? Yikes.
That looked very expensive.
Much cheaper than Tesla
A friend who owns a Tesla S needed to replace one of the drive motors for a similar reason......cost $8000
Very nice, but please remove background music.
Amazing, hardworking and professional. Can somebody figure out how much money a work like that would cost, please?
So even the one part moving object needs to be removed like the engine we are running away from?
I agree about the music!
How much did that repair cost to the customer?
5000 USD, I guess...
Music only 😂😂
@@roafelix8198 and some !
Bearings are not in grease gearbox is full with OIL
I agree - music is horrible
I know this music, this is bass music from 30 years ago! It's also one of my least favorite bass tracks because it is obnoxious! 😄😄
How many miles on the vehicle?
Coolant leaking into the oil was mentioned several times, but the cause of this failure (dry sealed motor bearings) was not mentioned? At least now we know Tesla drive units won’t last 100k miles.
People will complain about nonsense stuff music is better then just hearing electric tool running
Why do we need an IDT (idiot drum track)?
How many miles did this vehicle have?

Turn down that annoying music, didn't even reach the end of the video
I don’t get why creators put shitty music over their videos. I immediately hit the do not recommend channel button for those that do. Unwatchable
Gutes Video. Wo kann ich das Ersatzteil kaufen?
Ear plugs are a great way to eliminate any annoying noises!
is that considered to be a defect in design?
Why are they claiming this is an electric Rav4 when Toyota is against electric cars and doesn't make them?
Very interesting I thing the tech could have said more and less voice over. Would have brought even more to the video
I wish part numbers and tool sizes were included
How many miles or kilometres has this motor done?
24:46 Why is the coolant originally directed through that pipe?
It seems like Tesla has designed that for some purpose.
Does anyone know (or has a guess)?
Cooling under heavy loads/high rpm
@@NicholasLittlejohn
My question was not intended to ask why coolant is used but why it was directed through that pipe?
The fix shown in the video deletes the pipe so why was it there in the first place?
Point of failure, everything is designed to go wrong at some point.
Everyone complaining about the music clearly has never spent any time in an auto shop. As you can see, Even the music in the background of the actual video, where he's explaining about the inverter is on and loud. Many real car guys listen to music as we work on our cars. Those of you who are bothered by the music clearly can't think or focus. It's a very minor distraction
One thing in common between E.V. and Internal combustion they still have the same oil leaks. It seems odd that they are using bearings in the unit that are not rated for the RPM speed range.
P.S. Awful music
I have no leaks from either of my Teslas. They are not japcrap.
planned obsolescence.
Lesson to all - don't choose bad background music and most of all a Tesla.
The music is an insult to the music industry.
I’m not sure what the point of blurring out the serial number on the Toyota badge was for at 9:03 when you have the QR code clearly visible and reveals its 2261010R012145013476
Haha, good find. I would imagine whoever was in charge of that also had something to do with that god-awful background music!
How much miles or kilometers has this car done before this?
Re post without the shitty music I'll come back
All the rust around the output end of the rotor probably means the rotor shaft is worn inside the rotor core
327 Nubian! (Also good idea putting that music in there, so many comments that trigger the algorithm!)
The background music was fine. I could hear you perfectly when needed to. The music kept the video flowing. Good video.
I also want to take training in electric vehicle repair, so where should I take the training?
I'm from India
I always wanted to fix a transmission.
SKF...are the ball bearings from Schweinfurt Germany....???
Or Sweden
Great job, BUT how much did that cost the customer ?...A LOT !
Had to watch it on quarter volume.
So now the rotor is not liquid cooled? doesn't that cause it to get too hot during high loads???
Better than coolant damage under normal use is the theory
I've red that rotor gets blue from heat. Also bearing grease melts out causing premature bearing failure. The QC Charge manifold used does allow for conversion to oil cooling as it is done in the Tesla SDU.
The rotor doesn't get hot its just magnets spinning like any other rotor. Whats gets hot is the windings they get extremely hot as they are carry the load.
@@PlymouthVT The Tesla SDU and LDU are asynchronous squirrel cage motors, no magnets involved. The shaft gets very hot without cooling it actually turns blue.
@@PlymouthVT ermmm maybe educate yourself before commenting. Its an AC induction motor, so the rotor is a large cylinder of copper with associated resistance losses...
Never mind the music, this video permanently takes Tesla and Toyota off my car wish list. Looks like the mechanical part of this drive train was designed by marketing department and accountants with minimal help from engineers. Planned obsolescence at its worst!!!
This was the LDU in very few cars compared to the millions Tesla sells. Keep paying $5 a gallon and polluting the earth
So much easier to work on EVs than on ICEs...
What is the price for a job like this?
This job should cost a few million $$.
As a Do It Yourself mechanic, I need to buy a forklift?
Seems like keeping a safety release plug under a bolted plate is not a good idea, maybe I’m wrong.
How much does it cost to repair precision?
Music sounds like 1970 porn I was told!
Parabéns melhore aperfeiçoe o trabalho da indústria para o povo parar de ser explorado, chega perpetuar a maldade dessas indústrias queremos um mundo perfeito é como se baixássemos os sete Céus ok... Paz invulnerável irmãos do Norte...
Why video is not showing how to disconnect high voltage cables from the motor and this music is very annoying
Left video after 3 mins of the annoying music
Excellent video, but the background music is terrible.
The background music is terrible. Why would you ruin a good video??
Thats so nice, that they try to make us the e-mobility liking - but - nobody wants to drive that cars ^^
How much does that repair cost 😳
