Good luck with George, I hope he behaves himself and doesn't put up a fight too much.

Two things: Firstly, My Dad owned this exact car, in this exact same color/trim combination (1979 Allegro 1275 SDL, 2-door in Russet Brown)! Despite him looking after it well, it was a "bad un" and ended up lunching its gearbox all over the road! I have a picture of it if interested!
Secondly: I did the exact same engine swap on an early Allegro back in the mid-80s with my mates in a weekend and were able to get the car back on the road after a long period just sitting in a garage unloved. Ended up selling it to a mate for 100 quid, who then used it for school for about 2 years before it finally met the scrappie.

As a former Allegro owner myself, (with the same coulour Interior), I DO hope for YOUR sake, that your replacent engine is the VASTLY Improved A - PLUS version!
My mother had FIRST the same engined Morris Marina, followed by the Morris Ital, which DID have the A - PLUS engine.
VAST improvement! The Ital was " not just a pretty new face"
The A - PLUS transformed the car. Into an altogether .ore refined car!
Personally, I would advise potential Allegro buyers to either go for the newest ones WITH the A - PLUS engine, OR go for the refined 1500 model, which was available from the start!
Interesting programmes - keep up the good work!

Many thanks, yes I believe it is a A plus unit.

@@AllThingsAlex I'm really happy you can upgrade your Allegro with the A PLUS unit! It will make a different car of it!
      Actually, It's just over 20 years since I sold my ( rust-free, Z I E B A R T E D ) Allegro, to change it for an immaculate Vauxhall Carlton Estate.
Both were good in their ways - but the Allegro stands out as far as having character is concerned. I miss it - and love watching your programmes, therefore, as well as the Alex's Assets ones.

Good luck with the swap. I saw the 104 and was a bit tempted, but it just wouldn't have fitted in with the rest of the fleet. Shame you weren't able to take it further but at least you didn't lose on it. You did the right thing by lifting as low as possible to the engine, hence maximising the headroom available. Just a couple of inches to the side might help miss the central support beam in the roof. Every little helps in a situation like this. I found Elbow Grease to be a reasonable degreaser. Nothing is better than petrol though. All the best for 2034. Mart in Solihull.

Thank you Mart, yes I believe clearance wont be an issue. Might try petrol.

Nice looking hoist that. Not nice of George to be so quiet about his new engine 😂
Shame about the pug, but we can't keep them all so you are being sensible, unlike me, I have 11 and really should sell some 🙈

I always wanted a crane, my engine was able to be installed from underneath the car using very sketchy methods 🙄
Seeley broke their hearts didn't they 👎 Draper have given stuff FREE to other channels. My mam had a saying "if you don't ask, you don't get" 😊

I was really looking forward to more on the 104, it's a great car, and a little different, but you have to do what you have to do. Regardless, I still enjoy the channel. Cheers, Rob.@@AllThingsAlex

Never use Gunk as it's a load of over rated expensive rubbish, best way to remove old oil / grease is to use Fairy liquid and a small stiff brush.

I use petrol and paraffin mix together and a paint brush. My gearbox had 30 years of oil leaks and crap baked into it and came up like new. A couple of old t-shirts came in handy aswell.
