So yes, it may look simple, but there's a comprehensive thought in every detail of his apartment and he is taking us to understand that by explaining it very well to us. Me too. I live on the city edge of a Swiss city, 10 Min by bus or tram to the city centre, but still in a quiet place at the edge. It works for me (I am in a 3 BR apartment alone).
Same. I do best alone so I need somewhere I can find solitude. But it helps my anxiety knowing that I'm not totally alone. And that theres always somewhere to go or something to do, if I so choose. You can really feel the energy and life around you and that's comforting to me. Like he said theres a community aspect of being part of a bigger society
The way he talks about architecture throughout the times from Japanese design to 1920's & 1930's, religious sites, and the flow of the layout you can tell he is a master of his craft and is truly passionate about it.
This young architect has all my admiration. He has a deep sense of awareness of his inner and outside world. He has successfully created a space in his image; it has character, it is functional, and minimalist. Bravo. :-)
Anastassia Fowler You’re right. I’d listen to him read the phone book honestly, but also just the fact that he’s so eloquent and loves architecture so genuinely is another part that makes listening to him so wonderful.

You've done an excellent job mate. You should be specialising in small apartments and spaces. I've worked on plenty of small apartments over the years, and their cookie cutter designs are usually a terrible waste of space, and all rather boring.

I thought the same thing. My belief is he reads a lot and his use of words like monastic tells me he's into spiritual exploration and discovery which is an essential part of minimalism living. You dispense with the fluff and keep the things that are important, like the monks. That doesn't mean he doesn't indulge once in a while as evident by the two bags of chips (or crisps) in the cabinet. Here I am thinking my life isn't as great because of the housing crisis we currently experience in Toronto but you know it's all about making do with what you have. Very inspirational person.
Could Bryce interview some of this architect's other projects? He has totally captivated me, his design is pragmatic, esthetically brilliant and even spiritual! I am ready to move away from a staircase that doubles up as storage. This is substance!

The alcove for the shoes is an Asian thing. Asian people always leave their footwear before entering a house. They do this because they believe that the outside is dirty while the inside is clean, and they shouldn't be mixed. Point is, I believe that the alcove for the shoes just came to him instinctively because he's Asian. So, yeah, he really did communicate well architecturally. Damn, his design is so sharp and astounding!
@@roicipriano6016 Way to minimize a brilliantly executed design to a stupid pigeon-holing racialist "must be simply cause he's asian" statement. So dumb. Not everyone would design it so flawlessly...I'm sure you missed it but he said that was a practicality thing due to the plumbing fixtures, it's very hard to hear. Architects think of solutions to problems, and anyone designing such a tiny space would have an issue with shoe storage/a welcome mat. It's so easy to say "That's the obvious thing to do" when design is done well, but it takes actual vision to think of new solutions, not just asian blood.

Like imagine normally tiny houses ‘prepared’ for having several guests would have identical chairs hidden away and you’d have to move a lot of things around to pull them out. I like how he’s honest like “Yeah the bed stays out most of the time”, cause many tiny houses look really cool and minimalistic but you have to pull the bed in and out every night to have a living room and it doesn’t seem like much when just seeing a video, but I’d imagine it would get tiresome to have to do that every day. So yeah, it’s nice to see a tiny space like this one and his take on “People are more adaptable than things”.

As a guy that is studying architecture, it's great to see a lot of design principles we learn in class being translated so well to reality, makes me realise I still have a long way to go

The color scheme of this appartment gives me a Ying Yang feeling as the balance between light and dark is seemless. Definitely leaving a good impression
The way he explains things seems similar to that wise man from films to whom people train or learn from. He's very philosophical. I can feel that old soul vibe in him. Out of all the tiny house owners in Bryce's channel, this guy is the only one that I've heard giving meaning to things in this way. Kudos to you! You really gave yourself the best place to flow.
A great example of when a owner creates a HOME and not purchases an investment. This home suits his individual needs, tastes, and wants, and it appears as if he was not worried about resale price or others perception. Good for him! Thank you Bryce for the tour!

You can tell he reads everyday. He probably reads all sorts of genres too. The way he articulates what he’s trying to say is done in the most efficient way possible. There are no “likes” “um’s” or “literally’s”.

Seriously, I don't know which one is more incredible, if the apartment or the mind of the designer/owner. Not one word coming out of this guy is a waist, and the way he constructs his speech is as clever as his design. Humble with strong beliefs, secure enough to be willing to share his knowledge without reservations.
I love that architecture is so much more than efficiency. It's about aesthetics, sentiment, culture, philosophy, and so much more. What a beautiful example of how modern urban architecture can be used to better the world.
I loveeee how he explains his thought process and teaches us something along the way. If he had his own channel I'd watch him explain architecture concepts all day even though I have no interest in getting into the field myself lol
i really really like this architect’s consistency in explaining his design. i am sure he is expensive. i like the idea really in saving space, especially the table that pushes the boundaries of what is practical so that i don’t need to keep my piano under my bed. inspiring house design.

I watched this twice, primarily to hear him say “from the profane to the sacred”. That, the visual of his bathroom, and the flow from enclosed to open were all so intensely gratifying.
California architect and former architecture professor here . I must say, well done Douglas! Using "Sacred" and "Profane" and the relationship between them as a conceptual and organizational strategy really paid off here. I like to do the same thing, but use "Public" and "Private" as metaphors for it. The spaces are layered and interlock nicely, and you've used natural light and materials brilliantly. Your tiny home is palatial compared to mine! I live on a 30 foot (10 meter) sailboat that's a little over 10 feet (3.25 meters ) wide at it's widest. Lived with a partner for several years in the space too. It was a trade up from my previous boat / tiny home, a 20 foot (7 meter) boat I cruised down to Mexico with my partner several years ago. The same thing applies - multiple use spaces, carefully thought-out storage and in my case, a seaworthy vessel I sail over 1,000 miles per year. The best part is that I own my tiny home outright, and can take it almost anywhere if I choose to. Tiny homes are "just right" homes when designed with thought and care like yours is, and they are liberating rather than confining due to their affordability and ease of maintenance. Great job, and I wish you luck in your practice! PS - Beautiful exploded axonometric, and it's great to see a young architect like you using old fashioned tracing paper and felt tip pens to design. ;-)
Lived/sailed/cruised on a 26 ft sailboat for several years. Have kept the philosophy of multiple use spaces/things as I transitioned back to land. People think my house is tiny while I think it is palatial!

The design of his apartment is amazing. I’m really impressed by how he arranged everything so every inch of space is useful. THE PIANO DESK. The way the bed hides when guests are over is brilliant. The shifting planes are so cool. Man, I love everything about this video. Also, I might be a little in love with Douglas now.

The consideration of why we're being Invited to spend tens of thousands (if we have it) to make a 'shoebox' work for us is important to consider. This might be the most beautiful micro studio apartment I've ever seen. So brilliantly engineered, spacious, and comfortable. It doesn't feel like much is sacrificed either -- and best of all, this feels like something that could be expanded at-large (ideally affordably!) especially in larger cities. Personally, I'd try to halve the length of the platform and install a murphy bed on the other side. This is one of my all-time favorite micro studio designs. Thank you for sharing!

How is it harder than living in the countryside? I think it's super easy to be minimalist in the city where you're not far away from shops or amenities.
@@User_Happy35 I said so because when a person is living in a place where everything is available easily one might get tempted to indulge in those things and to control that temptation or indulgent buying pushes one away from the core idea of minimalism..and in countryside atleast in my country everything is not easily available hence you will be less tempted to indulge in hoarding things and having things that are not necessary for your livelihood but advertisements will make you believe that you can't live without them..I have recently started to follow minimalism and I live in metropolitan city and I personally felt this.. that's why I said what Mr. Douglas is doing might seem easy but it is tougher than people living in countryside..Hope you understand my point.😊

I thought the same thing. My belief is he reads a lot and his use of words like monastic tells me he's into spiritual exploration and discovery which is an essential part of minimalism living. You dispense with the fluff and keep the things that are important, like the monks. That doesn't mean he doesn't indulge once in a while as evident by the two bags of chips (or crisps) in the cabinet.
Here I am thinking my life isn't as great because of the housing crisis we currently experience in Toronto but you know it's all about making do with what you have. Very inspirational person.

They do this because they believe that the outside is dirty while the inside is clean, and they shouldn't be mixed. Point is, I believe that the alcove for the shoes just came to him instinctively because he's Asian.
So, yeah, he really did communicate well architecturally. Damn, his design is so sharp and astounding!

Not everyone would design it so flawlessly...I'm sure you missed it but he said that was a practicality thing due to the plumbing fixtures, it's very hard to hear. Architects think of solutions to problems, and anyone designing such a tiny space would have an issue with shoe storage/a welcome mat. It's so easy to say "That's the obvious thing to do" when design is done well, but it takes actual vision to think of new solutions, not just asian blood.
The architect is amazing. He has projected his calmness, serenity and organized persona into the design of this very peaceful space. Simplistic but grand.

9:35 I really like what he said here. Like imagine normally tiny houses ‘prepared’ for having several guests would have identical chairs hidden away and you’d have to move a lot of things around to pull them out. I like how he’s honest like “Yeah the bed stays out most of the time”, cause many tiny houses look really cool and minimalistic but you have to pull the bed in and out every night to have a living room and it doesn’t seem like much when just seeing a video, but I’d imagine it would get tiresome to have to do that every day. So yeah, it’s nice to see a tiny space like this one and his take on “People are more adaptable than things”.

California architect and former architecture professor here . I must say, well done Douglas!
Using "Sacred" and "Profane" and the relationship between them as a conceptual and organizational strategy really paid off here. I like to do the same thing, but use "Public" and "Private" as metaphors for it. The spaces are layered and interlock nicely, and you've used natural light and materials brilliantly.
Your tiny home is palatial compared to mine! I live on a 30 foot (10 meter) sailboat that's a little over 10 feet (3.25 meters ) wide at it's widest. Lived with a partner for several years in the space too. It was a trade up from my previous boat / tiny home, a 20 foot (7 meter) boat I cruised down to Mexico with my partner several years ago.
The same thing applies - multiple use spaces, carefully thought-out storage and in my case, a seaworthy vessel I sail over 1,000 miles per year. The best part is that I own my tiny home outright, and can take it almost anywhere if I choose to. Tiny homes are "just right" homes when designed with thought and care like yours is, and they are liberating rather than confining due to their affordability and ease of maintenance.

The consideration of why we're being Invited to spend tens of thousands (if we have it) to make a 'shoebox' work for us is important to consider. This might be the most beautiful micro studio apartment I've ever seen. So brilliantly engineered, spacious, and comfortable. It doesn't feel like much is sacrificed either -- and best of all, this feels like something that could be expanded at-large (ideally affordably!) especially in larger cities. Personally, I'd try to halve the length of the platform and install a murphy bed on the other side. This is one of my all-time favorite micro studio designs. Thank you for sharing!

@@User_Happy35 I said so because when a person is living in a place where everything is available easily one might get tempted to indulge in those things and to control that temptation or indulgent buying pushes one away from the core idea of minimalism..and in countryside atleast in my country everything is not easily available hence you will be less tempted to indulge in hoarding things and having things that are not necessary for your livelihood but advertisements will make you believe that you can't live without them..I have recently started to follow minimalism and I live in metropolitan city and I personally felt this.. that's why I said what Mr. Douglas is doing might seem easy but it is tougher than people living in countryside..Hope you understand my point.😊
