What do you think of this tone... CRUSHING?
NASTY AF!
A bit too much for me. I wished we we could hear the blended tone with the DI.
FILTHY!!! In the rough mix, the bass sounds INSANE. Love it, love it!
I think he's in e flat standard with a low a string.
To me the bass alone sounded crappy but seems to fit well in the mix.
Changing bass strings every 2 songs!? Glenn Fricker would shed tears in the studio.
Cortny Sellers rule #2 does not exist in cattle decapitation!
Cortny Sellers James's head would explode. He'd dip flat wounds in butter and hang them up, to "season"
Lolol
Fuck Glen fricker...
Bro, I change them after each note!
I felt like the X7 felt really unnatural, really didn't like the fuzz sound to it at all... Until I heard it in context with the guitars, jaw dropped. Goes to show the hard part about engineering a record isn't getting sounds that sound great, it's about getting sounds that sound great *together*. Great mini-series, really excited for the new album, keep it coming!
I'll admit these tones were definitely more extreme than I had in mind initially, but they worked great with the music so you go with it.
I just met oli at Heavy Montreal with my buddy Hugo that ran towards him as soon as he spotted him. Very nice guy.
I had a big smile during the entire performance of Cattle decapitation. It was truly the highlight of the weekend for me.
Thanks Dave for that video. Great job
Awesome. Oli rules!
At first, the tone seems to muddy and fuzzy on its own but once it's a full mix... whoohoo! It sits so well in the mix and shapes the overall tonal vibe of the song so amazingly!
PS Damn, Dave Otero has a YT channel?!?!))) I'm subscribing!!!
Just wait until you're hear it on the actual final mixes. It absolutely slays!
That's why you need a good sound engineer that know what is doing. What is important is the end results not how each individual instruments sounds. Like wise sometimes guitara player boost too much bass when they play alone but they take to much bass space when jamming with the band.
@@DaveOteroTube i honestly think this album is by far your cleanest recording with CD. I loved your work on anthropocene extinction, but this sounds like what you really wanted in the final mix.
@@imthemetalguy1 it sounds so thick and brassy yet clear
This album has an insane mix
Great to see a finger player.
That SansAmp it's pure gold, sounds killer!
The bit at the end about Dave trying to say Pinard in the Quebec accent was great! Nice touch.
😄😄😄
As a guitar nerd who's favourite guitarist is Josh Elmore, i need this second video
Prepare thy self.
Guitar video is up! Check it out yet?
Thanks a bunch for the clean and mix samples. Really nice seeing how it comes together.
This is one of the best bass tones I’ve ever heard... completely demolishing. Thank you for the video and the inspiration!
My pleasure!
The tonepump is tricky. The bass is is pretty close to being boost only. It only has 4db of cut but 14db of boost. The treble is 12db of cut and 14db of boost
Man this content is great. Very clear descriptions of gear and paths, good A/V and good production. Keep it up!
Thanks, man!
Man this sounds killer. Can’t wait for the guitars.
Guitar video is up now! Check it out yet?
@@DaveOteroTube Yeah it was the shit. I had never noticed the copper top on his guitar. Really dug having them playing together and showing off the different tones before adding bass and drums. Please keep working with them on future albums haha
I plan to ;)
I do the SansAmp trick too, but only with my Alpha Omega Ultra. I've found that the SansAmp doesn't work well with the X7 so I don't use it with that one.
You are an inspiration to us other metal sound engineers! Love the insight and detailed sound bites that walk through the signal chain. You are the reason the last two...soon to be three Cattle albums are my favorites from them.
Thanks, man! 🍻🤘
Yes! The original Sans-Amp Bass DI's sound is unsurpassed. Glad to see you're not using one of the later models.
Def bought a Creation Audio Labs MW1 Studio Tool based on this video series (your recommendation, your experience, your sound, etc.).
Badass. It rules.
Sounds nasty as hell! Cannot wait for the album's reveal and release!
Will y'all ever release a instrumental version of the album? Huge fan of y'all btw, spotted Oli when i believe atheist was playing here in Houston. Was stoked couldn't believe it. Wish i could meet u my good sir.
These are fantastic Dave! Thank you!
Thanks for checking them out, man!
I just saw your video on the drums for this record and now bass...totally subscribed right now! Great videos Dave!
Thanks, man! 🤘🤘
Someone tag Glen to this awesome REAL bass player video
Sweet! I'm planning on grabbing the new X7 Ultra, I love darkglass units.
The ultra looks incredible!
Really nice tone, I'm currently using the tech 21 vtbass deluxe feeding into a x7 and then a b7k ultra. I'm still "getting there" with my main tone. I'm trying to chase the current tone Jared Smith uses, his latest play through of remote tumor seeker sounds INSANE, any pics of advice of how to get near that sound?
Not sure about his playthrough, but I'm sure he would tell you what he used. On the album we used a combo of the DI, his B7K, and an old ampsim plug-in called preflex.
@@DaveOteroTube thanks so much for the reply man, I'll check that amp sim, but I'll also try to reach out to him, hope he replies
I always wanted a Specter bass! ever since Jeff piston of Dokken's Cyclops Bass!
This one certainly didn't disappoint. Get one!
lol You mean Jeff PILSON
Dave this sounds awesome \m/ \m/
Thanks!
Crushing indeed. One question, and I apologize if this was already addressed in the comments by Dave or the viewers. I like the tone best 6:56, but I wonder where the grind is coming from, since the Drive level on the Sansamp is set to zero and it appears that the Sansamp is the only pedal engaged at the time. \m/
That's mostly a by-product of how the sansamp reacts with a bass with this tone and this high of output. Most instruments will definitely not sound like that with these settings. This Specter is a huge part of the tone.
@@DaveOteroTube Thanks so much Dave!
@@craigparrish7139 🤘🤘
wow, 7:04, great tone... love the sound of it.... then the X pedal hit at 7:14... to me sounds like mud. But I am a guitarist, like my bass punchy, not distorted like that. Cool vid though...
The X7 can definitely be punchy, but we're more using it for annihilation in this case. Thanks for watching!
I thought it was super punchy. Muddy yet punchy. It worked super well with the guitars and even better in the full mix IMO. Creates a really clear darkness for the song on that part
Man inject that tone directly into my veins!
🚑💉☠️⚰️
Dave O really dude great job! I can’t get enough of that heavy distorted tone - and Oli is a fuckin monster so this just sounds overall monstrous as hell.
Curious! What was the final combo for the tone on the finished album for the bass?
So, when is your studio video coming out for the new Cephalic Carnage album? I mean, they're local, you should probably get them back in the studio. PLEASE!
As soon as they WRITE SOME SONGS! (Tried to say that loud enough for them to hear)
@@DaveOteroTube I hope it penetrates the cloud of smoke surrounding them. If nothing else, at least you can say you're the only guy that has recorded mac n cheese on a studio album.
is that a mxr bass compressor next to a boss HM-2?? that is the best "gutter-sound" for bass (great for fast plucked tremmelo lines and harmonics).. it's one of my favored bass-sounds (using the merciless distortion (hm-2 clone) from airis effects and finaly true a darkglass alpha omega blending in for some depth).. thanks for posting these vids, been following this band for as long as i know!
Québec represent!!!!
If i understand it right, the SansAmp is used as the classic "Amp". It is the main sound, that gets additions from the other pedals. Is it still necessary to get the big versions of the Darkglass Pedals or can i still do the whole shenanigans without having 3 EQs intersecting with each other? Love the sound and the Album, I am just asking to maybe safe some money :D
Is that an actual Cattle track? The tone is nasty by the way!
Yep, It's a small bit of a new song.
@@DaveOteroTube well that sounded awesome! Looking forward to hear more!
Omfg! I need those pedals for my bass gear, the sound is brutal and gritty asf
Pinaaarghhhh lol Cheers Dave, Great vid, gonna have to save for the MW1.
Dooo it! It rules.
Is the sansamp going in parallell?
Looks like you hooked it up like that, B7K->X7 and Sansamp on top of that
I had to re watch to video to remember. Ha! The chain in series goes bass > B7K > X7 > Sansamp.
thanks for the insight my brother, fokk yesss!!!! \m/
Thanks for checking it out!
Jesus christ... that tone just gave me the runs.
On its own I am not really a fan... but in the mix? Perfect. The tone melds with the rest of the instrumentals wonderfully.
💩💩💩
Thanks for your informative video. It really helps. Keep it up! Cheers from Ukraine!
Thanks for checking it out!
Nice tone! really like it! the settings on the bass are all max, right? i am gonna try your chain! :)
I believe the high end and low end tone controls are pulled back just a bit. I think I mentioned that in the video.
At first the final sound felt super synthetic and the notes were hard to hear but all together it sounded fucking massive bro I love it but not a good sound on its own and that’s okay as long as it makes the band sound amazing which you definitely did
intresting and good video! what tuning did he play?
Thanks for watching! Standard five string tuning down a half step I believe.
Death metal and pinard ! 🍷
By the way in french "Pinard" is an familliar word for wine.
This is tight bass playing
"Ils mettent de l'antigel dans le pinard!" - Bart Simpson
Such a nasty tone on an active bass. I’m a passive bass pick up guy but this was nasty! Looking forward to listening to the final mix in like 5 months????? Why does Century Media gotsta tease us like that?!!
The album is coming out on metal blade, so if you're watching the century media news you'll be waiting even longer ;)
Hahahah!! Truth
Well... they say what each knob on a bass does...
Soooooooooo........Where is Derek Engemann ? :)
🤷🏻♂️ Not on this album.
@@DaveOteroTube OK, thanks!! Did he left the band ?!! :O
I was surprised to see Olivier Pinard here lol (good video btw ^^).
Background music 😋😋😋
💜💜💜💜💜💜
Word of warning. Do not listen to this on your phone. Listen to it with studio grade headphones or a good speaker system
I'm of the mind, does it sound good when you play it? Yes? OK keep going. Once you add distortion, the newness of strings goes out the window.
"Lots of stuff going on up top, and a thick bottom." Sounds like my kind of woman.
I really wanted to like this tone. You lost me at the Sansamp. Check out Glenn Fricker's video where he used (iirc) a Mesa amp for the dirty tone. Unfortunately, I think the Sansamp has turned metal bass into such an after thought, tone wise. In too many metal bands all the bass is doing is making the guitars sound heavier, instead of having their own character and groove (Cliff Burton, Jason Newstead on the black album, Alex Webster, Sky Acord, Steve Harris) that compliments the guitars, not get lost behind them.
I also like to boost the 800, 1.4, and 2.2 frequencies with a high q (5.4-6.3 to taste) on the clean channel so it cuts through more.
@Brine Ryte Dave's mixes have been second to none for YEARS now. Couldn't agree more. His "end result" is always STUNNING.
i mean im fan of glen but seriously i have never heard a record from him where i said WOW what a tone, so I would rather listen to people that made albums I absolutely enjoyed ;D
@Orb Plant your man would rather cut through like Alex Webster, not get lost in the mix, making it sounds like it's the guitars delivering the low end 💁🏻♂️
As much as I love Glenn, he's the only guy who could demo a Dingwall with Darkglass gear and make the bass sound nonexistent. When it comes to tracking bass, Glenn just hasn't got a clue.
@@EvilBlakey agreed
This hurts my ears. Thats pretty brutal,I guess
NASTY AF
Dood rips
It seems that the modern trend in modern metal bass tones is getting a squealing pig tone...No low end at all and fizzy high gain on top...
Alex Blanco Mankind's biggest unsolved problem,. how to keep the lows low while using distortion.
Put triggered white noise on the kickdrums, distort it three times, done... worst "bass sound" ever.
Fuzzzzzzy. Meh
