    Cattle Decapitation is the best extreme metal band I've ever heard. Everything they do is insanely technical and the talent is off the charts. Travis's voice is unmatched and the drums are some of the best in the world.

      agreed but travis has a soft voice and when he sings oh my lord

      I think the drum sound could do with a bit more low end TBH as It sounds like an angry typewriter most of the time. The playing is phenomenal, but the tone lacks weight.

    Professional recording engineers are so intimidating. They look like a band member but they are easily the smartest person in the room.

    The writing, performance, and sound of this album are out of this world. The breakdown in Death Atlas at 2:30 took me by surprise and was so brutal it almost made me laugh (I mean that in the best way possible). Everything about it blows my mind. You guys really knocked it out of the park. Congrats!

    Man awesome! For those of us that are drummers please think about offering a way for us to hear or purchase just the isolated recorded drum tracks themselves. Would love to hear it. I’d buy that along with the album. It would be epic and I dint know of anyone who’s offered that yet. You could do that for guitarists too who would like to hear just that instrument. Anyway you get where I’m going with this, just a suggestion! Cheers and can’t wait to hear it!

    • @DaveOteroTube
      @DaveOteroTube  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that would be cool as well! Not really up to me unfortunately. Ask the band and the label for sure though.

      Also, if that's something you're interested in check out Nail the Mix. It's more geared toward aspiring mixers and producers, but essentially offers exactly what you're asking for.

      I sure will. I’d love to see video to of Dave’s footwork, I know it’s a pipe dream but would be epic to hear nothing but the drum tracks and see what he’s doing for those of us that are drummers & simply amazed at his playing. Thanks for the response & im amazed at your knowledge on all your gear etc. they’re obviously in the right hands. Cheers

    The album sounds amazeballs. Made my top album of year and made it into my list of top 20 metal albums of all time. Cool studio and video man. It's been a long time since I've been in a modern recording studio since I don't play in bands anymore and I'm only a home studio solo guy now. Pretty cool to see what producers and engineers are working with these days. Keep on rockin' dude!

    I really enjoyed your lessons on URM academy and also of the latest releases you produced... especially the bass and drum sound on the latest nightbringer was really good. Thoroughly enjoyed this one as well. recording, mixing and producing drums is a bitch and a half, especially if you are just starting out and are just intimidated by all the options, problems and possibilites you are faced with.

    Do you still pan out your cascade room mics when they are stacked on top of one another like that?
    For someone who's about to get into recording live drums for death metal/slam type stuff would you still recommend a set of room mics? I'm getting the 7 piece Shure mic kit soon but ill have to get a set of room mics (or maybe just 1 and use a mono room) on top of that eventually.
    Edit:
    Nevermind just saw that the mics are angled in an XY type pattern. My bad XD

    Anyone knows exactly what triggers those are on the bassdrum?

  • @Grindhead_Jim
    @Grindhead_Jim 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In your perfect world, how do you *prefer* to mic/track high velocity kicks? I've experimented with micing, triggering, blending, multi mic setups, and all kinda of cool things come out of it. What's *YOUR* favorite?

    • @DaveOteroTube
      @DaveOteroTube  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What exactly do you mean by high velocity? I'm almost always using a blend of the mic kick and samples and how much I use of each varies greatly depending on the project.

    • @Grindhead_Jim
      @Grindhead_Jim 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveOteroTube I'm talking anything above, say, 180 BPM, because, that's when things can get dodgy in my experience.

    • @DaveOteroTube

    • @DaveOteroTube
      @DaveOteroTube  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do, and I have a bunch of nice gear and mics that I love, but it's a pretty small room. It gets the job done though. Most other albums I've done I've tracked drums at my studio, including the previous two cattle albums. 🤘

    so what about phase on the many overheads. also phase with overheads and spot cymbal mics. ?>

    • @DaveOteroTube
      @DaveOteroTube  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That can be a trade off on big kits like this. I'll keep phase in mind while positioning mics and move them a bit if necessary, then also use auto align after tracking to restore as much phase coherencey as possible.

    • @iAmDrigoSteel
      @iAmDrigoSteel 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaveOteroTube That's very interesting. I'm asking because when i'm recording drums - i use a very similar setup, only difference is that i like to use MS for my rooms and i'm also fighting for phase between mics. I'll try the auto align for my next project for sure. Thanks for the response dude!
