Let me tell you something. I am familiar with pretty much every Fantine and every version of this song. My favorite lyric is "But there are dreams that cannot be..." because it basically sums up my past with a certain person who could never love me back and how it destroyed my life, hence my attraction to "I Dreamed a Dream". Anne Hathaway's performance is the only one that could make me cry, because of how she sang that line, all of the raw emotion behind it. She was the only one who could make me sob. Until today. I was pretty nonchalant listening to this song until you sang that line, and it was like feeling my heart wrenched out a second time. I immediately doubled over crying. And it is because of your emotion, your power and understanding of this song. And I have to give you the biggest bravo I have ever given, because you have captured the soul of a song, which is a very rare gift. So thank you for your talent, and truly, well done. This is the highest compliment I could ever give.
hansi6119 Wow! I am truly honored and humbled by your response. Thank you for the wonderful critique and taking the time to encourage me in this way :) Anne Hathaway completely OWNS this song! In a way no one else has. It took everything in me to NOT think of her performance while singing. Even still, I was heavily inspired by her performance, and I hope it captures that spirit. Thank you again for the support, and I sincerely hope that you are in a better place then you were before :)
Watching this you looked like you needed a hug. Dude that was so meaningful and you could actually grasp on the feeling when sang that. I mean I've watch Les Miserables and fell in love with the song but omg dude you slayed the song \(^o^)/
No problem and hey just saying i'd love to see you sing If i can't love her from Beauty and the Beast and/or Mamma Mia from none other than Mamma Mia ^-^
I just shadowed a drama class today and we were talking about the tools of an actor and I saw every one of them modeled in your song. Vocal expression, facial expression, gestures, stance....all of it. Please, take that talent as far as you can. It is a gift. I have grown up in theater and you have got one of the most gorgeous voice I've heard. Josh Groban who?
Caleb Hyles Your range is just so impressive :) I love when you sing in the higher part of your range though. You definitely captured the emotion of this song. Nice work!
I love how you didn't just sing the song; you performed it. In a lot of covers I've seen, people just focus on hitting the right notes and sounding good but you conveyed the emotions behind the song excellently. You captured Fantine's bitterness perfectly- which made me cry like a baby- and I also love that you didn't change any of the pronouns. An excellent cover :)
Memento Mori Thank you for all those kind words :) I love this song, it definitely brings out some very real thoughts and feelings and I am glad I was able to do this song justice~
OMG! I just found his cover today. 2018! He was conveying the parts in his heart that are still unhealed! Anne did that in the movie. And she did it live in front of the camera!
How the frick frack patty wack does this not have more views? I like cried it's so beautiful. Caleb, your voice is one of the most amazing things I've heard, and I can't wait to hear more!!!! :)
I've been listening to this song over and over for a week now sense I found it and the words have had meaning everyday I've heard it... Today they had a different meaning.... Today my beat friend has lost someone very dear to her (again for the 3rd time this year) and right now I'm waiting in the rain listening to it again as I wait for our friend to pick me up and take me to her, so that we can listen to this song together... I hope that anyone who took the time to read this will stay warm in this cold winter, stay dry in this rainy weather, and have no tears shed for unnecessary loss. May whatever god you believe in be with you and whatever angels you knew behold you
I'm literally speechless after all that. There were so many moments where I couldn't even make a noise to try and articulate how powerful this performance was. The sheer amount of raw emotion, not even in your voice, but on your face, is extraordinary. You just took my breath away with this video. I love Caleb Hyles. Thank you for being so amazing.
I motion for a gender-bent full-length Les Mis production. No changing of characters, names, or lyrics. We'll worry about costumes later. Mr. Hyles, you're hired as Fantine, and for the love of god please don't shave. Now we need to find a chick who can play Javert at a Norm Lewis level and we're golden. Last verse/finale: Chills. In a nice warm room, mind you.
Masterpiece, as soon as i saw you upload this i went "o thats gonna be real good gonna save that for later" such expectations are the making of a star, we already expect lots from you, because we can, we believe in your talent man, i even tried to be a tough judge on this one and not get chills, but they came regardless, can't fight the chills! one of the best versions ive heard, pure disney voice too.
I know what Les Misérables is about but the way you sing it makes me imagine someone losing their best childhood friend, remembering sweet moments while they walk up to their dead body while shaking and crying. Man. The feels.
This cover is so emotionally draining to listen to. I just absolutely love it! You give it so much justice. Hell, you do it even better than the original! Better than Susan Boyle's version as well. You have an opera singer's voice. You drag me in and make me feel amazing, complete. This song fills me inside, giving me shivers! I am absolutely in love with your voice! (Plus you're extremely handsome to boot, so it makes watching the video nice also. ;) ) You have the voice of an angel; keep singing man with the golden voice. 💖💖💖
I was listening to this while doing homework and I suddenly got goosebumps towards the end when he started singing with that embittered emotion about what they had lost. Just found out about Caleb today but I already subscribed.
For what is worth, a translation three years too late: "I hope you speak a little french, to understand this comment I truly love this music a lot. And I really wanted to hear it sung by a man, so I made my research. I really hoped to find you among the first ones on the list, because I find that this song really matches your voice. I was right, this cover is magnificent. Keep it up"
I commented about this in another one of your cover videos, but I'll restate myself. You are absolutely amazing. So much feeling and devotion and commitment to what you do. Everyone who listens can feel whatever you sing, whether it be despair, hope, hatred, love...not many people can do that now, but you do, and for that, I applaud you.
I really appreciate you not changing the lyrics, little things like singing "And still I dream *she'll* come to me" changes the entire context of the song, AND SO MANY MAN WHO COVER THIS SONG DO IT! Insulting such a beautiful song in the process. Great work.
You should probably do more Les Miserables covers. Also, you should do a cover from Doctor Horrible's sing-a-long blog :) you could make it sound great! Ps. You should also do Rocky Horror picture show. And Sweeny Todd and and pretty much every musical would be good. K thanks

as a seventeen year old, this is my first time feeling emotional over hearing a cover. i'm touched and i feel now that it is truly more important to resonate the essence of song with the listeners

"Still I dream he'll come to me!" Good Lord, Caleb! This gave me chills! The last line also broke my heart. The raw pain and hopelessness in your voice there just killed me!
This song, sang by Anne, was played at my nanas funeral, it was her favourite song. I showed this version to my mum and she held it together until you sang "He took my childhood in his stride" and cried right through to the end. She and I love this cover so much. Thank you🖤
Acting is spot on, broadway worthy if you ask me. The song was a tiny but pitchy in some parts but I think it helped add to the emotional levels of the song. Honestly really love this cover ^_^ the last les mis song i remember you doing was "bring him home" a few years back, and I'm glad you've done another! I hope the calories for covers is going well! Peace, love, metal~! ;)
This is honestly probably the greatest cover for I Dreamed a Dream that I've ever heard. I actually started crying towards the end. Absolutely amazing!
My compatriot. How, ...why would you put so much emotion into this? Did you truly want me to weep? Lost love, memories, years ago. I blamed myself for it all, the fights, the cold nights, her abrupt departure. It took me years to understand that she had her own demons and that it was her fault for leaving and nothing I could have done would have kept her in my arms....Took me a long time to accept that, even now it stings as years feel as days since she gave me a smile and left. Be careful with that voice, such a gift should never be wasted. Thank you.
just found this gem, probably one of your most compelling performances.

I lost the love of my life...in the autumn they were gone. The emotion and pain that comes through in this voice is how I still feel...over 4 years later.
Usually this song is sung with just sadness and melancholy throughout, but the bitterness and anger at life that you brought to this song really made this cover for me. Straight-up sadness can be heartwrenching but it feels much more real for Fantine and people in her position to have some anger in them over what fate has dealt them.
Didn't think I could enjoy this song as much as when I saw Anne Hathaway in the film adaptation, but this is just amazing. Both the singing and the emotion were incredible. Such respect. You're like, my idol.
I'm very, very impressed by this. Always enjoying your videos a lot, but this one is just amazing. One of my favourite videos of yours and one of my favourite versions of "I dreamed a dream". I've enjoyed it as much as the performance of the wonderful Lea Salonga (who is my favourite Fantine). I got extrenely excited when I noticed that you had uploaded a cover of this song and it turned out to be even better than I had anticipated.
The one thing I have always liked about your videos is the simplicity. It's just you with a camera and the mic. That way our focus is on you and your voice. With this song, I just have one word, OUTSTANDING! To be able to give the raw emotion both visibly and vocally, you truly have a gifted talent!
OH MY FUCKING GOD why i've been whatching yout channel for so long and i've never seen this cover i literally got got goosebumps Caleb you are such an inspiration i practice singing everyday and i hope to be as good as you one day

Holy crap this is amazing, ESPECIALLY since you added emotion. I did not expect that my good sir, I did not. 1000 likes! 1000 more! You are very talented :D
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for doing it the way it was meant to be. This is NOT a happy song. It is gut wrenchingly raw emotion and you absolutely nailed it .

"I Dreamed A Dream"
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong
I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed
Gasped out load? Nice little Freudian slip, there.

Misael V. Means a lot, man - thanks for all those kind words, keeps me going :)
I know what Les Misérables is about but the way you sing it makes me imagine someone losing their best childhood friend, remembering sweet moments while they walk up to their dead body while shaking and crying. Man. The feels.
You broke my heart. Beautiful.
Usagi Hime thank you :)
I'm crying. This was amazing. Just how I sing. Everything or nothing. Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
(Plus you're extremely handsome to boot, so it makes watching the video nice also. ;) )
You have the voice of an angel; keep singing man with the golden voice. 💖💖💖
***** Thanks for all that man :) I greatly appreciate that and I hope you enjoy the rest of my channel!
Caleb Hyles 💖💖💖 I plan to ☺
how r u not more famous? music is not music until u make someone feel the emotion. you brought the masterpiece to life.
this song make me cry every time
I was listening to this while doing homework and I suddenly got goosebumps towards the end when he started singing with that embittered emotion about what they had lost. Just found out about Caleb today but I already subscribed.
Nailed it! And from 3:10 I DIE!
I cried ~
simply amazing. i was like holy shit.
For what is worth, a translation three years too late:
"I hope you speak a little french, to understand this comment
I truly love this music a lot.
All that talent just shot me full force in the feels...
K thanks
Michelle Joy I've done Bring Him Home and Empty Chairs - but more to come I am sure ;) Thanks for the support! And Stick around for October for Horror For Hyles for some more villainous covers :D
Caleb Hyles Oh hell yes! I expect to see you go Full Javert. :P
+Caleb Hyles If you cover 'Slipping' I may genuinely explode ^^
Matt Wilson yes, yes, yes!!! Do slipping, please!!! Or My Eyes :D. Please? I subscribed (A)
He had all the feeling put into it. I teared up from the beauty.
Holy Hell! This is even better then some of the stage preformances! So much emotion put into it! Chills and tears!
as a seventeen year old, this is my first time feeling emotional over hearing a cover. i'm touched and i feel now that it is truly more important to resonate the essence of song with the listeners
I love your voice, your range and your theatricality if their is a male Eponine you will be my choice your AMAZING!
***** This is Fantine's song, not Eponine's. Easy mistake, though, they both have very emotional songs.
Yolonda Miller Oh my bad... thanks for correcting me.
Eponine's biggest song is on my own, but I think lots of people get them confused, ha ha.
What!!!!??
I was soooo surprised.
I really love you from Japan!
thanks so much! I will be in Japan in December! :D
Hello Caleb! I have a request from my sister - could you do Too Little Too Late from Star vs The Forces of Evil? Thank you if you do! :)
Please, please, please,do Bohemian Rhapsody! ♥♥♥

+Selina Kyle YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Literally tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat by the end. Wow. Caleb you should be truly and justifiably very proud of this.
You made me cry, and I haven't cried in a long time...thank you

WOW!! Those emotions and how it was sung......simply amazing. Hats off
Caleb, just beautiful.
"Still I dream he'll come to me!" Good Lord, Caleb! This gave me chills! The last line also broke my heart. The raw pain and hopelessness in your voice there just killed me!
First time hearing you sing this, I felt it. You gave me chills and made my eyes tear up. 10/10
This song, sang by Anne, was played at my nanas funeral, it was her favourite song. I showed this version to my mum and she held it together until you sang "He took my childhood in his stride" and cried right through to the end. She and I love this cover so much. Thank you🖤
This deserves a standing ovation!
That's right
The amount emotion he put into this is breathtaking!
That legitimately made me start crying.
The emotion and pain that comes through in this voice is how I still feel...over 4 years later.
its harder to cry in public than it may seem.
this is emotional. it hits you right there *points to feels*
You've made a guy all the way from 🇿🇦South Africa🇿🇦 cry buddy. Your voice and the emotion was next level. And the drama. Thank you. Needed this today.
Amazing job. Beautifully done. Your voice never ceases to amaze me
Usually this song is sung with just sadness and melancholy throughout, but the bitterness and anger at life that you brought to this song really made this cover for me. Straight-up sadness can be heartwrenching but it feels much more real for Fantine and people in her position to have some anger in them over what fate has dealt them.
Absolutely amazing. I got chills in how emotional you sang the song. I feel like you sang it with your whole heart and you are my role model for that
Im watching this during a rain storm and right when caleb sang "there voice as soft as thunder" a huge sound of thunder struck...wow
Didn't think I could enjoy this song as much as when I saw Anne Hathaway in the film adaptation, but this is just amazing. Both the singing and the emotion were incredible.
Such respect. You're like, my idol.
Several years after hearing this, it's just brought a tear to my eye again. What talent you have dude, just phenomenal
WHY ISNT THIS ON SPOTIFY OR ITUNES PLS PLS ADD IT
No matter how many times I try not to the whole thing makes me burst out in tears
i love that you dont change pronouns! its really sweet

Im crying, I truly love this song it's been my favorite for years and the emotion that he adds to it simply BEAUTIFUL!!!
Jesus Caleb...... I am crying in the club watching this again after being inspired by you years ago. Your voice is stunning.
Wow i already heard this like a billion times and yet you still managed to make me cry. Suscribed!! Dammit i already suscribed to you 2 years ago :(
MrKuveer Haha! Glad to see you're still here :) :) :)
3:25 - the way he plays with the word "be" broke my heart. Wow!
Have you ever thought about auditioning for a musical, because I think your voice is perfect for the stage.
Josh Paquette I've been in a couple of productions! All local things, and all Christmas plays :P But I'd love to do something Broadway!!
The one thing I have always liked about your videos is the simplicity. It's just you with a camera and the mic. That way our focus is on you and your voice. With this song, I just have one word, OUTSTANDING! To be able to give the raw emotion both visibly and vocally, you truly have a gifted talent!
OH MY FUCKING GOD why i've been whatching yout channel for so long and i've never seen this cover i literally got got goosebumps Caleb you are such an inspiration i practice singing everyday and i hope to be as good as you one day
The "and still i dream he'll come to me" is the heavy hitting emotional core of the song and you shredded it, bud. Incredible
IT CANT BE THIS GOOD JUST CANNTTT
This is beautiful im not sure what else to describe it as besides beautiful
This is your best cover yet (Haven't seen all of your's), and definitely among the top 5 best covers i've ever seen on youtube.
I love how your voice sounds when you get into the emotional parts of songs. It is difficult to descibe how it sounds. It is just so powerful and emotion-filled.
Holy crap this is amazing, ESPECIALLY since you added emotion. I did not expect that my good sir, I did not.
1000 likes! 1000 more! You are very talented :D
That baritone to tenor jump was PRICELESS
I'm a Broadway fan and I can see and feel the emotion as you sing. Just beautiful! I just feel like crying.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you for doing it the way it was meant to be. This is NOT a happy song. It is gut wrenchingly raw emotion and you absolutely nailed it .
absolutely nailed it Caleb! Not just from a singing perspective, but also emotional and your acting ability, well done! =D
