Honestly, I can't help but think that after the first part of the song he is singing this from the perspective of a man that is loosing his daughter to drugs or mental illness. His voice seems to be filled to the brim with extreme pain, desperation, anger, and self hatred. He feels like he failed her. He keeps wondering how he could have let this happen, convincing himself he could have prevented it if he had done things differently or seen the signs earlier. He doesn't know how to fix the situation and feels completely and utterly powerless to change things. He just hopes and prays that someway, somehow, she finds the strength within herself to overcome it. Just my take on his cover. The original by Sara Bareilles is one of my favorite songs of all time. Caleb Hyles definitely does it justice. Absolutely beautiful.
My take on this: The original context of this song was about a woman describing herself, but when sung by a man, the context completely changes. It becomes poignant, powerful. A man reflecting on a relationship with a woman he took for granted. Regret on a scale so unfathomable, not even the music nor the words of this song would ever encompass the gravity of the misuse and abuse the man imparted upon his woman. As time passed, so did the window of opportunity he had to fix his mistakes. With all the chances gone, all he had left was a sense of nothingness and self-reflection on how and why things went wrong. There's nothing left but sorrow, misery, and pain beyond measure. He will not find forgiveness anywhere, much less inside his conscience and his soul. She's gone and she used to be his.
This hurts a lot on a personal level, during a summer holiday a while back my dad had forced me into getting a summer job, back then i was very afraid to talk to him. he pressured me so much that i ended up getting a job without thinking if its one i actually wanted, i ended up in a shoe store, and with people shouting at me, kids kicking me in the face and basically all around stress from coworkers etc I ended up developing Crohns disease after i quit, my dad completely blames himself for what happened and is really suffering from seeing me in so much pain with my disease, part of it may have been his fault but of course i forgive him, he just doesn't forgive himself
Maybe it's because I'm sick and emotional. But I, a 28 year old man, cried like a baby to this... it resonated with me in a way few things have ever. Caleb, I want you to know that I truly enjoy every video you put out. You're an amazing singer and when I get the guts to start singing on TH-cam, I hope that I can add up to a fraction of the talent that you have. I'm a 65 year old guy who can't stop playing this version over and over and still can't make it thru without crying. I've heard all the major stars of Waitress sign this and by far this is the best version.

I've heard a bunch of versions of this song. And out of all the male covers, I always end up coming back to this one. I'm not going to say I know all about singing (i dont), but none of them feel...right. And then there's this version. The pacing of it. The range, the pitches, the high's and the lows. The way it seems like a whisper as if it's a song not meant to be heard. Like the voice is going to crack from holding back the tears. Those final notes on the chorus, holding on at the last few "She used to be mine" verses, wavering the voice. As i said, I've heard a number of them. And all of them are great. But this, in my opinion, is top quality. If people ask me for any songs to recommend from your repertoire, I'd put this one down as the first one to listen to without a doubt. I’m open and ready. You have a good solid sound that’s hard to find in singers today not saying that there aren’t people like you, but you’re unique. You don’t need any auto tune you have that beautiful raw voice that you just want to replay over an over. Just resonating pure emotion is in his voice. It's so raw and it makes even the least sensitive people feel a massive beat in they're chest, it makes us feel the lyrics and suddenly start contemplating the meaning and connecting them to our own lives.

This song reminds me so much of my daughter, Eithne, especially your version. I lost her to Acute Myelogenous Leukemia in 2016 "She's imperfect but she tries: fighting her disease/trying to stay strong for me. She is good, but she lies: Her physical pain/chemo pain. She is hard on herself, broken, and won't ask for help: Her body failing to meet treatment goals and the mental/emotional toll taken on her. She is lonely most of the time: having to be in hospital the alone for hours at a time whilst I was required to work to pay for her treatments. She is gone but she used to be mine: self explanatory." Those lyrics hit me the hardest. I raised her as a single father, since she was 18 months old. She would be turning 14 in April of this year(2019).
This hits me strongly. When I was eight my mother died after years of abuse at a man's hands. I watched from the safety of my grandmothers home with my sister and even then the abuse was evident when id spend time at my mother's. She stayed with him and fought back against him when my half brother came into the picture. I lost my mother to this man and I hate him for it, but I owe him for my baby brother. My brothers not what I asked for but he's here and I love him more than life its self. I regret to this day that my brother was the one who had to see the abuse on a day by day basis. This may not fit the song quite right but every time I listen it brings back those memories good and bad. It makes me feel closer to her.

It made it hard for me to enjoy the actual performance from the actress in the musical because nothing could match the first time I'd heard it. I definitely resonate with this as a trans guy. The girl I used to be, how she's slowly fading from mine and other's memories. She tried so so hard to be accepted and loved. I know I *am* her, but she was so different from me now. She died, and now Kris has taken her place. But we're both okay with it. yknow when I feel isolated and when I start losing the friends I used to be very attached with, I listen to this song cover. It has been a while ever since I listen to caleb's cover. His style of singing in songs like these are just gut wrenching... It felt painful yet comforting. It's something I'm trying to fix as a grow up. Learning to grow up while slowly seeing people change, yourself changing, is a harder process than I thought. It was hard to the point that Im starting to lose who I originally was. It reminds me a lot of this song cover. Caleb have some good and maybe not so good covers but when he sings an intense song, it felt so powerful and impactful. I'm not a casual listener but when I return to an old song cover out of spite, I define that as something legendary and beautiful.

When I first heard this I was confused if it was like ... a breakup .. and a guy who used to have her etc. I'm pretty sure now .... that it is a girl ... that doesnt recognize herself and how life has made her .... she isnt the same full of life girl ... maybe life hit her hard. She doesn't see the person she was and thought she would be ... and would give it up to go back and fix things etc ... Even though she wasn't perfect .... it was truly her.

I'm a bit too late to this, but I still NEED to comment on this absolutely AMAZING performance. I am literally shaking, god damn Caleb. I know you're S class, but these heartfelt covers just convey so much emotion - they kill me, and I love every single nuance, every second of it. It doesn't get better than this. It's minimalistic, but strong and powerful at the same time. PERFECT!

The sweetness and sincerity at the beginning is beautiful, but when you got to the second half, my heart melted from the power and passion in your voice. When you sang the words, "Give it all back for a chance to start over" and on, I could tell the song meant something to you. Your voice is inspirational; thank you for covering this song.
I’m open and ready. You have a good solid sound that’s hard to find in singers today not saying that there aren’t people like you, but you’re unique. You don’t need any auto tune you have that beautiful raw voice that you just want to replay over an over. I look to your songs to help me because you use so much emotion you feel the music and you let it flow through you instead of blurting out words in a rhythmic tone. I can feel your sadness through your voice and that’s what makes it so much better. I inspire to be just like you, but I can’t sing for crap. Just resonating pure emotion is in his voice. It's so raw and it makes even the least sensitive people feel a massive beat in they're chest, it makes us feel the lyrics and suddenly start contemplating the meaning and connecting them to our own lives.
I love the fact that your covers feel so powerful. Your words ring with so many emotions that your covers are some of the few that can bring tears to my eyes. I asked my sister why/ how you can sing in a way that echoes the sadness and longing for a time that can no longer be.

Hey I have a question, do you make yourself cry sometimes while singing a really emotional song? I could just feel so much emotions listening to this, you’re voice is truly amazing. You truly have a gift.
This song reminds me so much of my daughter, Eithne, especially your version. I lost her to Acute Myelogenous Leukemia in 2016 "She's imperfect but she tries: fighting her disease/trying to stay strong for me. She is good, but she lies: Her physical pain/chemo pain. She is hard on herself, broken, and won't ask for help: Her body failing to meet treatment goals and the mental/emotional toll taken on her. She is lonely most of the time: having to be in hospital the alone for hours at a time whilst I was required to work to pay for her treatments. She is gone but she used to be mine: self explanatory." Those lyrics hit me the hardest. I raised her as a single father, since she was 18 months old. She would be turning 14 in April of this year(2019).
This hits me strongly. When I was eight my mother died after years of abuse at a man's hands. I watched from the safety of my grandmothers home with my sister and even then the abuse was evident when id spend time at my mother's. She stayed with him and fought back against him when my half brother came into the picture. I lost my mother to this man and I hate him for it, but I owe him for my baby brother. My brothers not what I asked for but he's here and I love him more than life its self. I regret to this day that my brother was the one who had to see the abuse on a day by day basis. This may not fit the song quite right but every time I listen it brings back those memories good and bad. It makes me feel closer to her.

I remember seeing Sara Bareilles perform this song live. It made it hard for me to enjoy the actual performance from the actress in the musical because nothing could match the first time I'd heard it. I definitely resonate with this as a trans guy. The girl I used to be, how she's slowly fading from mine and other's memories. She tried so so hard to be accepted and loved. I know I *am* her, but she was so different from me now. She died, and now Kris has taken her place. But we're both okay with it. I vow to be the person she needed when she was young, maybe a father, or a brother, or simply a friend she could've looked up to.

I have to say when I first heard this song here in Tampa with Desi Oakey doing the lead I was instantly in love with this Musical, but when I heard "She Used to Be Mine" I was completely blow out of the water. I can't get enough of this tune. But, until now I had never heard a guy do this and you gave it so much amazing emotion and style it left me in Awe. I don't know how anyone could even get thru this song as it's so powerful and emotional. You rocked it and I hope you come to The Straz here in Tampa to perform. WOW...!

yknow when I feel isolated and when I start losing the friends I used to be very attached with, I listen to this song cover. It has been a while ever since I listen to caleb's cover. His style of singing in songs like these are just gut wrenching... It felt painful yet comforting. It's something I'm trying to fix as a grow up. Learning to grow up while slowly seeing people change, yourself changing, is a harder process than I thought. It was hard to the point that Im starting to lose who I originally was. It reminds me a lot of this song cover. Caleb have some good and maybe not so good covers but when he sings an intense song, it felt so powerful and impactful. I'm not a casual listener but when I return to an old song cover out of spite, I define that as something legendary and beautiful.
