I think he did the audio mix because it allowed him to keep the power of the song building up through the 3rd verse, otherwise his range would have maxed out in the second verse, which isn't the climax of the song. There is absolutely no practical or artistic reason to sing female songs in the same key. Even contralto songs should be lowered at least 2 semitones.
