    2:40 - Not to be nitpicky, but M.2 is the form factor and NVMe or SATA is the protocol that is used. M.2 drives come in both NVMe and SATA.

    • @biskero
      @biskero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      so it's the M.2 SATA that is showing, correct? else the NVMe speed should be much higher if it's even supported (?)

      @spr0k3t 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@biskero Keep in mind, there is also the limitation of the USB3.0. Using NVME over USB3.0 will not give you much benefit over an M.2 Sata SSD if any.

    Hey Chris. M.2 is a form factor, there’s both SATA and nvme M.2 drives. So saying m.2 drive is incorrect if you’re trying to differentiate from an nvme, it’s SATA vs nvme.

    Thanks for this video, it was very useful and nice to see some-one else using the desktop. I have upgraded 3 * pi4's to SSD and only had one problem; this was with my MarinaDB system. I was already using a USB disk to store my data and when I booted from USB the system fell over with root account locked. The problem was in /etc/fstab, a second USB device name change. I therefore recommend removing any other USD devices during the changeover adding them back after the upgrade. This is easily done by '#' the lines out of /etc/fstab.

I like seeing the "whoops" because it highlights how the little things can derail even the more seasoned folks. Looks like (from the performance and Amazon link both) the Seagate 2TB drive is a regular HDD, not an SSD, which would explain the speed difference. An external SSD would be much faster than the 108MB/sec- but that performance is in line with a 2TB HDD.
    If it was your standard non-NVME external SSD it would have been virtually the same performance as the M.2 SATA SSD, as they both would be SATA, just in different form factors.

  • @FloM03
    @FloM03 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So looking at the speeds you got with your "external USB SSD", are you sure you ment SSD for the first external drive? The speeds(especially after seeing, what is possible with the Sata M.2)look more like a HDD and you also link a hard drive in the description.
    Other than that, thanks for the great explanatory video

  • @terotahvo6849
    @terotahvo6849 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Regular SSD and M.2 SSD (not nvme) use the same protocol SATA3 (MAX about 600MB) so speed difference between ssd and m.2 here is because the disks not because the interface (SSD vs. M.2 SSD), isn't it?

    The whole install to Micro SD card first is an unnecessary step. Just connect the USB3 drive to the computer you are flashing the OS image from. It will show up under 'Choose SD Card' in Raspberry Pi Imager and just write directly to the USB drive.

      Raspberry pis have supported netboot for a long time. Add a power over ethernet hat and you don’t even need a wall wart.
      Changing what OS is netbooted is literally changing a symlink or renaming a directory on your netboot box. It’s faster than swapping and cards or usb drives.

    Hello thank you so much for the video.
    Would you also be so kind to explain or even better, create a video explaining, how we can use an SSD with ext4 (or NTFS) file format to boot and install OS on?
    As far as I know the imager currently converts the main boot partition to FAT32. I also notice that the SD CARD COPIER also doesn't give any option for file format.
    Is there a way to flash OS drives with in Raspberry Pi OS with and option to select file format?
    I really would like to set my "first" pi on an SSD which is using ext4 (or NTFS or at least ExFat at the very least). I would like to install the OS on an ext4 drive and boot from it for the most resilient setup, before I even delve into the Pi world wormhole.
    And perhaps you can also do a video of benchmarking FAT32 vs Ext4 etc?
    Would really appreciate any comment, help or guidance from you.

    All I did was update the Raspberry PI Software and use the SD Card Copier to copy the system to the M.2 SSD drive and change the boot loading options in the raspi-config file. Then shut down and removed the SD Card and re-started the PI again. It booted directly from the M.2 SSD then.

    update 08/2022:
    we can now flash the eeprom from raspi imager directly, (miscelenious -> boot priority -> usb boot), fit the SD card in the raspb, plug a sceen, boot the raspberry, green screen ? you pass the test, plug your already flash SSD (or whatever), and...... done !

    So does it look for the microSD every time? If its gonna take 20 seconds to time out every boot that seems like a downgrade......or is the intent for faster app loading and general hd use?

    • @rogerjones9984
      @rogerjones9984 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't follow how that would be considered a downgrade. Don't forget, it's not just faster boot time, the whole OS will be more responsive when running, because any disk access is at the speed of the USB-attached SSD/M.2. So even if there was a timeout looking for a non-existent SD card, I'd take that for the increase performance when running.

    • @spr0k3t
      @spr0k3t 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's 20 or so seconds to boot to the desktop environment... not to find the USB boot. The actual time to move from SDCard to USB bootable is approximately 3 seconds. The SDCard will take priority over USB if you have a bootable SDCard installed.

    please be more clear on your videos, as those it may seem simple, and followed instructions with my external hd. It is not letting my transfer over the raspbin to my external due to not having a partition. It would be easier for someone to just change their setting to recognize the external on boot and to download the pi file over to the external and then have the pi boot up without the ssd hard in it and have the external plugged in. I have done this a tone, having the same results over and over again, when in short like I said if just saving the pi on the external and then booting up, with the external plugged in and the ssd card out words fine.

      The biggest problem you were gonna face is how to place pi in a pi case😂
      Believe me😂
      In my first time.. I was too scared of that I might damage my pi.
      But everything went well 😂

    By accident the time machine sent you to the middle ages, your phone rings and you answer it in front of a witch trial:
    - Hi Mike, actually you need a USB 3.0 or a flash-drive, but a micro-SD card is more reliable. I would recommend an external 2TB SSD or an M.2 SSD. They don't work with NVMEs you need an actual M.2 SSD drive.
    .................... [that was the crowd just listened to you]
    - [the judge yelling with raised arms] The witch jumped to that man, catch him and burn him!

    Does the Argon case work with M.2 and PoE at the same time?

    • @spr0k3t
      @spr0k3t 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it won't. I have the ArgonOne case and there is a heat sink and fan inside the case that keeps the POE hat (or pretty much all other hats) from fitting in the case. Perhaps the next revision of the ArgonOne could provide something like that.

      Get PoE splitter from Amazon for $14 but yeah no PoE hat will fit this case.

    How to revert back to microsd boot?

  • @e1woqf
    @e1woqf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once USB boot is enabled, does that mean I'll always have to wait about 20 seconds for the "no sd card found" timeout to complete or is there a way to get the Pi to boot from USB immediately?

    • @spr0k3t
      @spr0k3t 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not 20 seconds really. It's more along the lines of 3 seconds for the boot eeprom to check/redirect is all. I beleive he was saying 20 seconds to boot into the desktop environment.

    • @e1woqf
      @e1woqf 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spr0k3t Meanwhile my Pi 4 together with an Argon One M.2 case and a M.2 SSD have arrived. Of course I've spent some time on it this weekend. 😀
      You're right, indeed. It takes about 20 seconds to boot into the desktop environment. Works like a charm!

      You can set the order of what devices to boot from using command line tool raspi-eeprom-config and changing the BOOT_ORDER parameter from 0xf41 to 0xf14. Then the boot code will try to boot from USB first and only try the SD card if that fails.
