This is the best guide I have found. I saw some people complaining about the depth of your explanations, but I love it. That's why I'm here on the EASY (idiot's) guide. If anyone is upset at the effort and time you have put into this one, they should be directed to the QUICK video, which you have also provided.

Mark, This is a great video. There is a big demand out there for step by step tutorials like this. Many like myself have just a basic understanding of Raspberry Pi's, Arduino's, ESP32's etc. We want to do more with the hobby but require simple to follow Tutorials like this. I have many simple projects at home nearly all accomplished by following video tutorials and copying other 'wiser' individuals sketches and components.
    Thank you.

works with Raspberry Pi 3b+ - intel ssd 600p series 256gb and LC-M2-C-NVME-2X2 (External USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 aluminium enclosure for a NVMe M.2 SSD)
you just need to make Imag with "Raspberry Pi Images" ,restart windows to see it on ssd,pik it in Raspberry Pi 3b+ wait for 10 min. and it works

Hey Mark. Just wanted to say that this is a great video. I've been wanting to start a smart house for a while now, and your tutorials are helping quite a lot. I just wanted to note that recently raspberry changed the way you log into pi. The user/password is no longer "pi/raspberry". Now you have to change it when installing it with pi imager. There's a config button on the bottom right corner (there's even an option to allow ssh now). Hope it helps :)

I followed this guide, but just to make sure my USB3 to SATA adapter is compatible I am using 2.5inch hdd to boot up hassio. It went perfect!
After few days of use, and has no issues running it I decided to purchase 256GB SSD, and this time Im having issues booting to it.
Same USB to sata enclosure, only swapping the HDD to SSD my rpi4 having hard time booting up from SSD. What did I do wrong? Swapping back to HDD then I can boot hassio fine. I re downloading the hassio install image twice, reinstalling balena etcher, reflashing the image to SSD multiple times, all no luck.
    What did I missed? hmmm

    • @MarkWattTech
      @MarkWattTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey Peter. You can yes, to do this you would need to use a different home assistant installation method. In his video I use the Home Assistant OS install. You could use the Home Assistant Supervised method which would allow you to say run Pi OS and do all your normal desktopy bits and have HA run in the background.
I currently don’t have a video out for this install but it is on my todo list.

I ran into a couple of problems though: using the CMD.exe to create a blank ssh file would not work unless I ran it in administrator mode. Also, trying to restore a snapshot from the Home Assistant setup screen wouldn’t work so I configured a minimum Home Assistant install then used the Snapshot section of the Supervisor to restore the system. That worked great. By the way, I used an Inland 2.5” case containing an Intel 240GB SSD with a USB 3.0 interface and it worked without any hassle at all.

Great video Mark. I did notice that you are installing the 32-bit OS, but the 64-bit HA image. Have you been running this way successfully or was this an oversight? I I recall, not that long ago the 32-bit version of HA was recommended because some addons has issues under the 64-bit.... has that been resolved?
Also, can you provide some deals on setting up a static IP? I have no issue getting this working on the SD card, but I have not been successful with the version on the SSD.

    • @MarkWattTech

So we use the 32bit Pi OS just to make changes to the Pi before we load on the 64bit HA image. There are a few different ways to make changes to the Pi’s epRom but this is just the method I chose for the video. The Pi image is only used for this step (you could use any).
Since the big 1.0 update HA now recommend the 64bit image. There is details about this on the image installation page :)

I ended up using balenaEtcher in the end. I am still struggling to understand one thing though. We flash the SD card with the Rp OS, then we flash the SSD drive with HA plus the OS. However, we then go through all the trouble of updating the OS on the SD card only to stop using it. I suspect at some point I will need to update the OS on the SSD card. Is there a separate procedure for updating the OS on the SSD or does that happen with HA updates?
Also. I am having a problem with my Nortek z-wave USB stick and maybe you know the answer to this..... why do people talk about doing a factory reset on their z-wave USB sticks? Is the z-wave database or other information actually stored on the sticks or is it to bring better support for z-wave devices?
Lastly, my main concern right now is that my HA instance is using DHCP. I am going to want to set up a static IP, but I just haven't got that far yet. Maybe this is something you could consider walking through in future videos?
      Cheers!

@@MarkWattTech Well, I think I found a solution by adjusting the /boot/config.txt (which in Home Assistant OS is located in /mnt/boot/config.txt). This was actually a lot of trial and error and it seems that a combination of specifying a framebuffer width and height, use hdmi_force_hotplug=1 and enable_uart=1 did the job. Important thing to note is, that this only works when you can ssh into the home assistant command line. It seems to be a known problem with Raspbian, and I found a lot of useful stuff in Raspberry forums. However as Homeassistant OS is quite different, there's not too much info out there. I really wonder, why it worked for you out of the box...

@@MarkWattTech I have the Argon M.2 case with a SATA M.2 SSD in there. Can't I just clone the SD Card to the SSD and it should work?

hi. I went through your way in mobaxtreme followed all the steps except (i didnt have sd card so i used a USB for raspberry image and flashed it) and then i powered up Rasberry pi and inserted the USB connected the ethernet to my router to Pi, but in mobaxtreme it says connection refused when i start an ssh client. For the Pi you will first need to enable USB booting else it wont work. If you check out some of my newer videos I show you how to do this is a simpler way. You will need an SD card to update the Pi’s boot loader order though.
