  • "Parkinson meets Paul McCartney" was broadcast on BBC1 at 9:30pm on Friday 3 December 1999.
Michael Parkinson and Paul McCartney go back a long way. Parkinson is one of the famous faces on the Band on the Run album cover. In exchange for appearing on the cover, Paul promised Parkinson an interview, a promise which took a very long time to fulfil!
In 1997 Paul was interviewed by Parkinson on the radio [you hear that here: • Paul McCartney sets re... ], but it's with this appearance on Parkinson's television talk show that he really fulfilled that promise.
Parkinson is a great interviewer asking intelligent well thought out questions and genuinely listening to the answers. Paul is relaxed and his rapport with Parkinson is evident. The result is a fantastic interview, one of the very best he's ever done in my opinion.
There are also a number of musical highlights, in this part you will hear:
    01:00 - Honey Hush
    16:04 - Twenty Flight Rock
23:23 - When the Wind is Blowing (whistling version)
    Enjoy!

I remember watching this when it aired. Michael Parkinson as an interviewer has never been bettered. I just love Paul.

I totally agree, Parkinson was the gold standard for this type of chat show interview. Thanks for commenting :-)

One of my favourite Macca interviews. Totally at ease and relaxed, Parky was the perfect host. Love his rapport with the audience too.

I love the chemistry between Parky (best interviewer in the business, by far) and Paul (most successful popular singer ever).
A large part of their rapport comes from the fact that they're both from working class, Northern English backgrounds and they are totally tuned into each other's sense of humour. Tremendous interview.

The possibly coolest thing about this is David Gilmour playing the rhythm guitar, almost invisibly.

I thought I saw David Gilmour and thought, It couldn't have been him, so thanks for confirming that. Didn't notice Ian Paice. I'll have to see this again. 😂 Parkinson always so excellent, so sad to hear he is no longer with us and Paul is a great storyteller. Thanks for this.

Wow man thank you for this upload! I’ve never seen it before. Every few months or so I go through a Beatles obsession where I want to see if there is anything out I haven’t heard, read or seen. This is huge! Holy crap that is a super group

You're very welcome, glad you enjoyed it. It was an amazing band that he had on the Run Devil Run album and it's great they played live on a few TV shows in this period. Here's a link to the Jools Holland appearance just in case that is of interest to you: th-cam.com/video/BfECZ8JkpqA/w-d-xo.html

When it comes to discussing Linda’s death he seems to be quite pragmatic in how he talks about it. I remember thinking the same thing about his reaction to John’s assassination. I think it’s a kind of defence mechanism, keeping up a barrier rather than letting the raw emotion burst out.

Parkinson looks like McCartney older twin brother. “Michael McCartney”

Paul McCartney doesn't have an older brother or a twin. He has a younger brother, two years younger actually but yes his name is Michael but no need to put it in quotes

Wow seeing David Gilmour be a "sideman" is so unusual.
