- Fans of the Beatles and Paul McCartney can be forever grateful the greatest musical talent of the 20th century remained open to interviews and candid in his responses, barely a year after John Lennon's devastating assassination. McCartney seen here in his late 30's remains stoic, answering difficult questions, including his own drug bust in Japan, and as always Paul the epitome of cool.

In 1982 I was 13 years old and becoming obsessed with The Beatles. Paul was almost 40 during this interview and I hung on every word he said! Fast forward to 2023 and I’ve just secured my ticket to see him play in Melbourne on October 21 this year. Paul is now 81 and I am 54. Where have the years gone! “Maybe I’m amazed”.
Oh my gosh I’m so happy for you!! I’ve never gotten to see him in concert and I probably never will 😢 But I hope you enjoy yourself!

Have fun! I'm seeing Ring💍 in Milwaukee in a month...and I'm 60. I remember when their last 6 albums came out, but I had much older siblings who introduced me to the music. I remember having a Hello Goodbye 45 I'd play on my record player in my room. Now I can finally say I've see a Beatle live. 🙂
I saw him at Knebworth in the UK with his wife Linda and many other top world rock stars in 1990 who played that day, and I was thinking he is old then, now he is 80, wow. I hope you have a great show!

The interviewer was Bryant Gumbel, he hosted NBC's Today show from 1982.
Music is how Paul copes with life and keeps (relatively) sane. When his mother died he dove into music hardcore to deal with the grief he wasn’t allowed to show (“Northern boys don’t cry”) and so music has been how he deals with emotions/anxieties ever since. That’s why he’s so prolific, it’s like breathing.
While a lot of his music seems happy & optimistic on the surface, if you really dig deeper a lot of it has a subtle melancholy. “Here, There and Everywhere” sounds innocent and sweet but it’s actually one of the saddest love songs because the girl he loves actually is NOT here there and everywhere with him like he needs. Even his vocal tone sounds sad.

He knows his worth and he knows he’s a legend-he also knows he doesn’t have to go around bragging about it. Kanye could learn a thing or two from him!

A decade has passed but I'll bet you'll be astonished at how energetic he is and what a superb show he still puts on. He did almost 3 hours for us. No intermissions. No breaks. Just 3 hours of killer, killer music with bunches of Beatles tunes. All the great hits. Get excited. You're going to see a legend.
He shows us that talent and genius does not have to be accompanied with depression, drug addiction, or any of the destructive behaviors that are too common among the gifted few.
he says he had an utterly horrendous 6 months or more after the Beatles ended...but survived it
McCartney has handled fame and success throughout his life without any major hiccups, always remaining grounded. I do believe being a real family man helped keep him sane through the years and of course with the love and support of Linda McCartney

I think out of all the beatles, Paul is exceptional at all aspects of music and the showbiz world. There are two aspects of being a musician the actual making the music which can be solitary and projecting it to an audience and handling everything that goes with that. Paul is a master on all fronts.

You don’t see this kind of natural self assuredness from a guy who has been to the top. He was well brought up.
How straight forward and honest. While living on Long Island, a friend of mine in eastern Long Island (NY) met him in a restaurant. he said he was very very approachable and very very nice! As he was walking out of the restaurant, Paul came up to him and said, "(his name - recalled what did you wind up having? ", "How was it? ". Amazingly down to earth not full of himself in anyway. This was about 15 years ago.
I always thought all of the Beatles were ordinary blokes who became megastars, but still remained nice friendly ordinary blokes.
I'm both elated and saddened by this interview. Paul McCartney comes across as an authentic, original, gifted artist and person. He has given us so much over the years, to be happy about. Every interview I've seen over the years gives off the same impression. I feel so lucky to have lived during this era, and been to so many of his concerts.
And I'm saddened because there are so few like him in this world.
Sure there are other accomplished artists that are also nice people.
But all the best things in this universe sure came together in this one, didn't it.
Thank you, Paul McCartney, for all you have done for us. I hope to live long enough to see you perform one of them future ballads, as a 98 year old.

God, this was a great interview. He’s always been a charmer but you can really see his emotional pain in some parts. He’s a fascinating human with genius talent (and many of the eccentricities that come with genius) but he’s still pretty damn grounded for being such a legend.

He was presenting a photo of Paul's Stage IEM as a prosthetic ear (and not to mention forced perspective illusion photos which happen every day as proof of Paul being shorter. Take a photography course sometime. Lol.)
And he was comparing a 22 year old baby fat faced pictures of Paul to a mid to late 20s Paul with no baby fat and wondering how he changed so much slightly in 3 years. Lol.
Not even to mention that everything and everyone under 30 changed in 1967. Music, fashion, attitudes, facial hair, etc. The hippie movement arrived and changed everything. By the 70s everyone looked like this. Even 1973 Ed Sullivan had longer hair and crazy sideburns.

I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964 at age 5. I cannot really separate John and Paul in my mind. Two greatest song writers of all time. I rank them as equal.

The best thing about the Beatles, is how down to earth they were and how much perspective they give things. Obviously they had ego’s who wouldn’t with the heights they hit but they still were also down to earth they didn’t completely lose themselves were others have
Linda McCartney is way underrated. She has the coolest backing vocals! She was perfect in the Wings’ songs, and the few she sang on her own, like Cook of the House, are great. I’ve always loved her plaintive, matter-of-fact singing. She was fine as a musician as well. She did her part. She really had to put up with a lot of petty and unfair criticism. I thought she was great!
She couldn't sing live on pitch at all. She was not a musician either.

She is the reason I never followed Paul's music after the Beatles. It was a joke to have her there. Not quite as bad as Joko but close. It was his choice.

And being an artist, no matter the medium, when you put something of yourself out in the public domain, you 'bare your soul' a bit and you will always be a bit anxious about how its received. That's why so many artists seem to have split personalities with a dark side or why they appear vain or shy. Each work of art is like one of your children... you hope for the best, but there's always a chance it will flop. Paul is confident, without being arrogant; a rare gem.

Paul is music! Hes the most musical man we have ever had. If you told him to go away and write a punk album he could do it, same as any genre, he could do. But his music is simply McCartney music its so eccentric and no one else writes music like him. Ram is one of the best albums of all time. And that confidence came from his collaboration with John.
John was at first the confident one.
He passed it on to the other lads.
The original Paul died in 1966 at age 24. He was replaced by Billy, who became the second Paul in the Beatles.

What a life this man has lived. Went to Hamburg with the Silver Beatles 😉 in 1960 at the age of 18. His group the Beatles became the biggest band in Britain and Europe just 3 years later in 1963 at the age of 21. Then just early the next year in February 1964 came to America with the Beatles and they became the biggest band in America and then the whole world still at the age of 21 years old!!! Paul then wrote one of the most classic songs and most covered songs of the twentieth century just a year later writing Yesterday at the age of 22. Then did all his work with the Beatles helping them produce one of the greatest....if not the greatest album of all time......Seargen Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album in 1967 at the age of only 25 years old. Writing all those classic number 1 songs with John Lennon and many by himself until the Bestles officially broke up in April 1970 when Paul was only 27 years old. He then went on to do the group Wings in the 1970s and had many successes with them touring the whole world successfully breaking attendance records and writing many more #1 hit songs. Then went on to do his solo career throughout the 80's , 90's , 2000's , 2010''s and is still going strong in the 2020's just announcing a new Tour in Australia in 2023 at the age of 81 years old???? This man is amazing! I don't think Paul McCartney has ever been through a dry phase or writers block when it comes to his songwriting ability. Except for maybe a very short period in the mid 1980's but that could well be from Paul spending more time raising his children with his late first wife Linda McCartney. By the way...I think Linda McCartney is a big reason why Paul remained so strong after the Beatles broke up in 1970 and up until Linda's untimely passing in 1998. I think Linda deserves alot of credit for the way she supported Paul throughout her life being a loving wife to him and loving mother to their children. She gave Paul strength and made him a home and family. But back to Paul's songwriting....it is exactly like Bob Dylan has said recently about Paul McCartney that he is in awe of Paul and it seems that Paul's songwriting is just effortless. For a guy who was never classicaly trained in music or who was never taught as a child to ever read music and who still to this day never learned to read or notate music....Paul McCartney is a master songwriter and tunesmith writing all of his songs and melodies completely by ear. I hope Paul lives another 20 to 30 years making more music for himself and for maybe young new artists in the future. The day Paul McCartney passes on it will be truly a huge loss for music.

"There were better musicians than Linda, but that wasn't the point." But it was the point that everyone who, pretty cruelly, criticized Linda for being up there missed. They were a couple and got to go out on adventures and do fun things together. I mean, that's a pretty decent, admirable, loving thing to do. And heck, it's really not Wings without Linda anyway.
He's always been so down to earth. He truly is a living legend.

I met Paul McCartney in 1972.
My Uncle Peter Heine was director of advertising for Billboard Magazine. Paul and Linda had come to 9000 sunset in Los Angeles California to sign the advertising agreement for Wings first album. The album contained the soundtrack for the 007 movie Live and Let Die. I was introduced to them in the southern conference room.
After Peter had introduced us he asked if the three of us could keep each other company while he went down the hall and made a change to the contract. We said sure and I was left alone with Paul and Linda. Paul had the album with him and he was showing it to me and told me he was really happy to have it. I asked him why. He said he needed the work. I asked him why. He said he needed the money. I replied you're a Beatle how can you possibly need money. He explained that that was in the 60s and this was the first real work he had since he was a Beatle. Living as a Beatle was expensive and this was the first real money to cross his thresholds since he was a Beatle. This was amazing to me. Paul went on to explain that no matter who you are and money has a way of running in one side of your life and out the other. Paul needed to stay relevant. I turned to Linda I asked her if she was related to Eastman Kodak.
She said no everybody always asks that. I said I'm sorry. She said and then they apologize. I felt kind of awkward so I said okay let's just enjoy each other's company and look out the window. We sit on the top floor of 9000 Sunset looking out the southern conference room window. We each started to comment on what a spectacle LA is. I said it looks like somebody went completely crazy with concrete and asphalt as far as you can see. Paul replied completely crazy. I said it was like an ocean of concrete and asphalt.
Linda said it's like an ocean of concrete and asphalt with islands of big buildings sticking up out of it. My Uncle returned with the contract and Paul signed it. We said our goodbyes and Paul and Linda headed for the elevator. On our way home from Billboard Magazine my Uncle asked me what I thought of Paul and Linda. I said they seem like regular people to me. Peter responded "they are regular people with exceptional jobs."
In 1973 Paul McCartney sent me a copy of the McCartney family calendar via my Uncle with a special hello from Paul.
Paul is the kind of guy who remembers a 13 year old kid.

They were exciting times I was a Beatle nut in the sixties, I remember my mum taking me and my sister to see A Hard days night at the Cinema in 1964

Being a musical genius and your job is creating is a painful life. You can tell Paul tried his best not to suffer for his art. Its almost like the real Paul is down, introspective, insecure, loner, ruminative, soulful deep thinking person that worries alot and he seems to fight against that so he normally cones across as super happy, silly,no worries, everything's great, lifes good, be positive but anyone who acts like that is not usually that way especially the man who has written all them songs! Them songs have cone from a very complex ,mixed up ,trying to be positive person who just wants to be happy and is genuinely grateful! Him and John changed the world snd it must of been a burden!

True fan of Paul Mcartney since quite young. Say 8 or 9 years old. Saw them on tv first time landed in US. Saw on Ed Sullivan show. Followed whole life up to now at 68. Still enjoy interviews and songs. Love his and Linda’s documentary. So rare. They were so normal. Loving couple and family. Hit it high and hit it low. Always practical and creative. Precious family. Good example to all other musicians and pop folks. Teach your children well. Love them every day.
There will never be a perfect two as Lennon and McCartney! There relationship was to intense to last. They were both leaders of the band but had to pretend they wasn't so imagine the uneasyness! They both loved each other in a bro way and both knew that themselves and eachother were genuis
Just watched the film yesterday and hearing all the beatles songs he wrote gave me goosebumps. Seeing what hes actually done for music is astonishing and to think hes still going now, what an icon. ❤

I love Paul’s honesty in this interview. I still believe that it’s not easy being Paul 60 years of adoration of fans but he has managed to remain a normal guy.
Saw him in early 90s at Soldier Field in Chicago. Saw him again in 2017 in Wichita, KS. Awesome. I've loved the Beatles since I was 3 and they were on Ed Sullivan.

I remember these interviews. They were spread-out over three days on the Today Show in April of 1982 promoting "Tug Of War". I set the hernia-making $1000 1981 RCA VCR to record and watched 'em when I got home from school.

I saw him live in St. Louis in 2016...he was brilliant and played 2 1/2 hours non stop!
His performance of Blackbird practically was like he was lip sinking it and slipped the actual recording on...he was that good!

John Lennon in his 1970 Playboy interview said he took Paul into his band because [1] Paul could play 20 Flight Rock on guitar, and [2] he had a bit of Elvis's good looks that girls would like.....

That's funny he said when he was 40 he wanted to be a musician forever and now I think he's 70 something and he's still doing it and he's damn good at it. I think I always liked Paul the best because he's pretty straight up.

8:28 He makes a really interesting point here about creativity being killed by (premature) judgement of the art. McCartney definitely seems to be at his best when he has people around him who help with quality control - either the other Beatles or his better producers (e.g. Nigel Godrich on Chaos And Creation In The Backyard)
