Finally!! a close-up in focus video. Congratulations! a wonderful explanation of how to easily sew in a zip. I hope you are a teacher. Our schools need people like you.
I'm a guy who loves to sew, but mostly has covered ATV and motorcycle seats or made cushions for furniture I have built. I have been wary of any zippering.. Your video really helped me today sew a 35" zipper into a cover on a camper bed cushion. Thanks for the help!
I watched this and paused it every few seconds and followed it through all the way to put a zipper into a skirt I am doing for a project. I have never done a zipper before and this video made it so easy to do. Thanks so much for putting this up here.
Hi I am not good at zippers the problem is wen am done it doesn't look evenly stitched either one is wider or smaller than d other n the zip head always gets in d way I don't have a zipper foot I have the regular sewing foot the machine was bought with. do you have any tips to help thank u
Wow. I’ve been self taught sewing for about 13 years (my only sewing class was Home Econonics in 1991!). I always hate putting in zippers because they were tricky and always came out messy. I don’t know why I never looked for a tutorial before today, but this was very eye opening!! Thank you!!
You are a saint. I have tried for months to sew a zipper properly and have failed and cried and given up. This video... I made the PERFECT hidden zipper for my swing skirt. I am SO THANKFUL to you. thank you thank you thank you. Keep making videos, you have a new fan!
The 3rd video I have watched on how to put in a zip. The first video I have watched that makes it clear what to do, by using good camera work and useful explaining. 10/10
So helpful! I just installed my first zipper and was so intimated, but your tutorial really made it simple. It's not perfect, but it's functional and I will do better each time. Thanks!
Thank you so much. This video is by far the best one I've found to learn how to install zippers. And I've watched enough. Now I have finished my granddaughters summer dress. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for explaining how to sew an invisible zipper into a project. I must admit how I've been a bit intimidated by the thought of sewing zippers onto a project in general. But, after watching your method here, I'm not as scared as I once was. I'll be using your advice to sew my very first zipper into a purse lining I'm making for a macrame'ed purse I've made. TY for posting this video.
I have had a fear of sewing zippers since I was a teenager learning to sew. I was inspired to try again after I got my new sewing machine and this tutorial was exactly what I needed. Zipper in and fear alleviated. thank you!
Thank you so much for this method. Nowi can sew items that I had steered away from making because of my fear of zippers. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this AWESOME method. Best wishes.
I have been struggling with zippers for years and watched several videos but you explain it much easier for me to get it finally. I'm going to try it out today. Thanks for sharing. You have a fan in me🤣😄
Thank you so much for this video. I've been sewing for years and have always struggled with zippers. Your video made the process so simple. I put in a perfect zipper the very first try. I highly recommend that everyone watch your videos for sewing tips. I will no longer dread putting in a zipper!
Very good instructions. A saw like 10 videos regarding zipper installation, but this one is the clearest and best explained, and the easiest too. Using tape is a great idea. Thanks.
Handy tip......If you turn the seam ripper upside down, you can run the side with the little red ball down the seam and seam rip without fabric ripping!
This is by far my favorite tutorial for attaching zippers, you explained things really well, and you also explained exactly why you used the techniques you used, which was very helpful. Thank you!
Great Idea , I love to see what everyone else is doing .. I been working in the fashion industry for 40-something years I've been sewing for fifty-one years. And it's always amazing to see what other people's ideas are. That's one thing I don't like doing is putting in zippers like that but you have to and you just made it easier use that tape. I'm going to take your idea honey thank you
Your video,is really good,i woken up what my parents, learned me,when I was small and forgotten, about and used the sewing machine my parents gave me,for the first time.thanks
WOW THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this video. Your technique using masking tape is GENIUS. I finally know a good way to put in a zipper, and it looks so much neater than it has before. Just subscribed, thank you again. Poo poo on the 308 people who downvoted the video, I thought it was great.
Thank you!! Sewing zippers was such a pain, but I didn't think of sewing the seam all the way up, then sewing in the zipper and separating the seams later.
Thanks for this tutorial. It's been so long since I put on a zipper and I found this way to be the easiest. The masking tape eliminates pinning. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Nice, neat zipper application! Wendy, because I seldom sew-in zippers, I refer to your tutorial repeatedly, and it serves me well! Thank you! The masking tape is a great idea! Thank you!
This is a remarkably helpful tutorial. Yes the masking tape is frowned upon but I'm definitely using it! I was so scared to sew zippers I have not done my recent home work making a dress from a pattern because there is a zipper involved. Thanks so much!
I "Pinned" this on Pinterest.... I'm just beginning at sewing but you definitely made it seem easier than it sounds, lol I always remember my aunt saying she HATED putting in zippers.... she and my Grandmother used to sew for a living. anyway. Thank you!
This is actually the BEST and easiest zipper instruction video I have EVER seen! Wendy makes it very simple! Perhaps it is your English that makes it difficult and not her instructions! I can see you don't write English very well and it is possible you do not understand it very well either. I don't mean to be harsh, but your critique seems very unfair.
I took sewing classes when I was little (6 to 8 years old) and now (I'm 24) I have gotten into cosplay. I make my own patterns or alter patterns and I know the basics, but for some reason, techniques like sewing zippers eludes me. Read the patterns and I swear they are not in English, or I have made my own pattern and therefore have no directions. I really appreciate your clear, concise and complete video. I will definitely use this technique.
You are a natural teacher, easy to follow. I wanted to add zippers to some pillow projects, thank you! Love that you used painter's tape! I appreciate that you show why using a 5/8" seam allowance makes sense when sewing in zippers; if too narrow, it would weaken the seam around the zipper. Are you using a Pfaff machine? If so, what model is it? I like the way the little black foot pushes the top along, without a walking foot.
Ingenius! thankyou- I have always had trouble getting my zips to look nice and neat like this. I just used the technique in this tutorial and it worked perfectly, though the skirt I was making was cotton velveteen and the masking tape pulled off a little of the fabric on the back which showed through slightly at the front - so just careful folks if you are using a fabric that has a pile like velvet!
For those of us who have been taught by a professional sewing teacher, we all let out a big gasp when you pulled out the painter's tape instead of the straight pins. When you can't find the tape will you be using glue? I am being facetious but it's because it's a pet peeve of mine seeing people not utilizing the basic tools created for making great garments. To be honest, I have used safety pins, paper clips, and bobby pins when I have run out of straight pins. Now, I will add painter's tape. Keep up the tutorials. :)
i did not like more than one straight stitch in my zipper and i did not like fabric that the lines are not meeting. you coud get away with the tape but that was all for me.Esther T
Omg thank you you are amazing!! I never learned how to do this properly and have been doing it my own convoluted way for ages. This is a million times easier though.
I'm glad it was helpful. I don't think I can do a video that covers the things you asked for (filling a bobbin, etc.) because those instructions would be different for different machines. I've used a lot of different machines when I teach classes - and they all have their little quirks. Your best bet for specific instructions would be to find instruction manuals for the machines you have. You can find many online now - even for older machines. Good luck!
Any masking tape will work. You can use it on fabric that frays, but be SUPER careful when you remove it. Pull in the direction that minimizes fraying.
Thank you so much i feel like i understand every thing now ... this is the best invisible zipper tutorial i have seen!!!!as soon as a i get my zipper foot i will be sewing zippers in every thing :)
Thank you SO much for this well done video! I was just gifted a “seasoned” Kenmore Ultra Stitch 8, am new to the sewing world, and have beem wanting to replace a broken zipper on a beloved skirt. This was so clear and easy. Adding to my playlist of favorites, and hoping to get that zipper added. Thank you for your help! 💕 New Subscriber!
thank you wendi..I now know how to do it. I've been having problems attaching zipper, i find it difficult but now having seen your tutorial, I think I would have a nice finish. Thanks to you.
Awesome tutorial! I've had to pick out a zipper on my seat cushion project twice. The basting stitch and masking tape is going to make all the difference. I'm coming here first next time I've got a project that requires a bit of sewing.
When I was a little girl (50 years ago) my mother used regular masking tape from Woolworths. It was 15 cents a roll Lol. It worked great. I still use tape but its painters tape from dollar store.
Thanks for the video....you helped an old fisherman make a fly reel case for his new reel. It is a zipper up model made out of canvas...Good video and thanks again!!
this was the most awesome helpful video..after watching this i feel confident i can do it too. i want to make a jumper but i need to be able to get in and out of it. so i want to put the zipper on the side of the top....thanks for your clear explanation on why you did things the way you did. that is most helpful
I've also used just a plain glue stick instead of the painter's tape. You put it on the zipper and gently iron it. It adheres well enough to get the job done and comes out in the wash. Again it's probably not sewing instructor/manufacturer approved, but it works really well!
Wendy, thank you so much. So informative, you such have a calm voice and the pace of this video was perfect. Thank so very much, by the way your nail are really pretty.
You can still sew on a zipper with a regular foot - you just can't get as close to the teeth. Try out your machine and see how close you can get. If you can't get as close as you want, you might want to just hand-sew the bit around the zipper. It usually goes pretty fast. Good luck!
it worked! I will be putting zippers in everything. thank you so so much.. It looks good and the zipper works. yahoo. I can't tell you how happy I am about this.
You don't often see a zipper and elastic in the same garment. My guess (without seeing the project) is that you'd sew it in like in the video. If there's a separate waistband in the pattern you could attach that after sewing in the zipper - as part of finishing the top raw edge.
Thank you. I have been afraid to try zippers. I think now I'll give it a shot. I do have a question I want to make a buttercup style purse. I can use this technique to put in a zipper. I just sew reg stitches before and after the zipper. I was wondering how to get fabric towards the top and bottom of the zipper. This explains it. Going to see more of your videos. Thanks again
Crank your needle down to help hold it in place everytime you stop to shift things. The dress WILL bunch up something awful - but remember you only need to get a couple of inches smooth at a time. Take a deep breath and be as patient as possible - it won't be fun. And next time - regardless of what the instructions say - put the back zipper in BEFORE you sew the sides or shoulders. You'll be working with a flat piece of fabric and it will be a dream.
Best zipper tutorial I've found! Thanks for the great instruction & video. I was curious if I could use a water soluble fabric glue stick to hold supper in place for sewing? Beth

This is by far the best zipper tutorial. Your demeanour is so welcoming and calm, yet fun. Wish you could teach me to sew in person!
Fantastic idea! I am coming back to sewing after 20+ years and you just made my first zipper sewing experience super easy. Thank you!

Using masking tape instead of pins is... pure genius! That saves sooo much time, and prevents accidental needle jam and catching. Thanks for the vid!
I have been struggling with zippers for years and watched several videos but you explain it much easier for me to get it finally. I'm going to try it out today. Thanks for sharing. You have a fan in me🤣😄

Zippers are one hardest part of sewing clothing this makes it easier will definitely try this way. Thank you. Sewing sin e I was 13 or 14 years old.
That's a great zipper application Wendy! Can't wait to try it. I have a skirt I want to do. This technique will make the job much easier.
Give it a try! I was scared of them for a long time and once I tried it I couldn't believe how easy they actually are.
You are a genius, Wendy! You saved me a ton of time and made my projects look like a professional did them! Thank you!!
i just started sewing about a month ago and this video helped me a lot! was able to put a zipper on my diy shorts :) so proud :')

Loved this video. It was so much easier than the way we learned how to add a zipper in sewing class in Junior High. Thanks for sharing!
Best tutorial. Making my first skirt and I messed the zipper up so bad... thank you!
Thank you so much i feel like i understand every thing now ... this is the best invisible zipper tutorial i have seen!!!!as soon as a i get my zipper foot i will be sewing zippers in every thing :)

Sorry. I've never actually done that. :-) I don't sew a ton of clothing and I like to stick with fairly simple styles that I can alter easily.
Thanks for the video....you helped an old fisherman make a fly reel case for his new reel. It is a zipper up model made out of canvas...Good video and thanks again!!
Thank you! I can do this.. I couldn't comprehend the directions on the pattern so this is so helpful. thank you. now we will have a skirt to wear
Great video, this is how I learned 40 yrs ago. One thing, if you don't have a zipper foot, sew it zipper side up.
this was the most awesome helpful video..after watching this i feel confident i can do it too. i want to make a jumper but i need to be able to get in and out of it. so i want to put the zipper on the side of the top....thanks for your clear explanation on why you did things the way you did. that is most helpful
Thank you for this! Attempting a Halloween costume with no zipper knowledge! This worked great...I used scotch tape and it worked wonderfully :)
Amanda Bergantino pillow beds
OMG~~~~ you have no idea how much I needed this video....now my world is shiny and happy!! :-D
Thank you for a great tutorial! The masking tape trick is brilliant!
Happy to help. :-)
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It was simple and concise enough, that I am no longer overwhelmed by trying to sew a zipper!
I've been afraid of zippers all my life... you make it so easy! Thank you!!
Thank you o wise lady for showing us the hidden secrets of the zip...my garments are forever changed...
this is one of the best videos I've seen on the topic. Well done!
I've also used just a plain glue stick instead of the painter's tape. You put it on the zipper and gently iron it. It adheres well enough to get the job done and comes out in the wash. Again it's probably not sewing instructor/manufacturer approved, but it works really well!
Thank you Wendy. Very interesting. May God continue to bless you and your channel.
Good luck!

so good ... the last video I watched really depressed me and made it looks so much harder ... this looks simple! Thank you!
this is by far the easiest way ive seen to sew a zipper. than you!
Thanks much Wendi for sharing your great trick. I'm so pleased with how easy it was to learn how to install a zipper.
One of the best zipper tutorials I'v come across. Thank you!
Wendy you won the internets with your zipper technique.
You don't often see a zipper and elastic in the same garment. My guess (without seeing the project) is that you'd sew it in like in the video. If there's a separate waistband in the pattern you could attach that after sewing in the zipper - as part of finishing the top raw edge.
Wow so great to have found you! I'm a beginner with sewing and this was so helpful and easy to understand! I'm gonna try it now.
You made this look so easy!!! I've been trying to learn it for weeks!!!
Thank you! This is the best tutorial for sewing a zipper! Clear and easy instructions :)
This is a great tutorial. Thanks for the tips Wendi. It's made stitching zips so much easier!
This woman is amazing and is very helpful in explaining things
Beth
Darling you are a wizard!! I will NEVER put in a zipper any other way.
Wow! How is it that I’ve never learned this before?? Thanks! Can’t wait to try!
