Ron Collins demonstrates 3 of his posh seam finishes - Hong Kong, flat felled and inside seams -- all of which you can do on your sewing machine. www.creativfest...
Love that you are wearing a jacket you made with a Hong Kong seam. Thank you for a very nice tutorial, easy to understand, and the stitch length tips are helpful.
I learned this technique from Sandra many years ago on See Perfect and I use it all the time As a fellow sewing teacher, this is one of my student's favorite things to do. As a matter of fact ,I'm in the process of making a jacket and I'm finishing my seams with a Hong Kong finish Absolutely love it. Please make more of these videos Ron. Your stitching is so superb. So is your teaching .
That's great! I've only seen Hong Kong finish one in my life. Most sewists I speak to don't know what it is. I'll say it now. If ever I get into garments, I'll be utilizing these techniques. Thanks!
Thank you. I am a beginner but always want projects to look good. Never like to waste even when practicing, always have a finished usable project. Learning as much as.possible makes all the difference.
Amazing! This takes me back to good ole school sewing classes. I took at a private university where a nun taught us these kind of seam finishes. Honestly, I’ve not heard about those beautiful finishes since I took sewing in college. Thank you. Just beautifully done. Jackets look very well done. 👌🏽
Hello Aspen, if I may add here the bias trims sold for quilting and finishes in fashions, totes and other decorative items use the Hong Kong finish. IF you are making any item that requires you to totally hide a seam it is a French Seam that is needed. look inside a pillow case you would find a French seam there. sewing is initially done with wrong sides together and then trimmed and stitched again encasing the first seam. there are several tube videos on this. Hope I helped. Carylanne in TX
I do too. THere aren't many channels of just good teaching. Some teachers make things so mystical, I get the feel they really don't want you to learn the technique.
Thank you 😊 I’ve watched this video several times because you are pleasant and you explain all of this wonderfully. I will be using these techniques at some point, very useful.
Really nice to add to many of my sewing projects. Huh, I had no idea that the double stitching actually had a name or knew how it was done. All this time I believed it was just done with a double needle (I tried with a double needle a few years ago.. and it just didnt turn out nice.. and Wow!! I Love-love the adding of the braided piece on top of the stitching! Would def love to learn more of your ways of sewing ❤️
Thanks Ron..I will now give all of them a go. I am new to sewing and I am always looking for hints. Your style is str8 to the point and easy to follow.
@leighlaclaiborne there is an extra fold in a binding finish, so you would fold the bias edge piece until it meets the raw edge of the fabric, then fold again so that the fold you just made will meet the original sewing. There is a video from West Valley College called Basic Seams lesson 3 part 1 at the 51:34 min mark she explains it very well.
I like the idea of decorating the lining of a jacket, either with a fancy stitch or an add on tape. There's a lot more you can do with a semi industrial machine than you can with a domestic one tho. You have to decorate things before they are complete and after any sizing alterations, or its not possible when the garment is assembled. Thx for the inspiration.
"There's a lot more you can do with a semi industrial machine than you can with a domestic one tho" Why? Such as? I was just thinking watching this that my domestic machine has a foot that would feed the braid centrally along the seam making it much easier, quicker and more accurate to follow the seam line whether straight or curved. When to add these finishes needs to be planned but again would be at the same point in the garment construction regardless of the machine used.
a HK seam does use bias binding. Well made clothing of suiting fabrics and woolens, always had a silk bias (Hong Kong seam) over the raw edges. All my straight wool skirts had a Hong Kong seam especially if the skirt lining was set into the seams. What was not shown was if and how a HK seam is actually set into or under a seam. These are great short clips. thanks.
Thank you for your help. It's impressive how you sew nonchalantly. But you make it seems as if it was easy to sew a straight line along an edge or parallel stitch when that only comes from experience. A beginner may need to change feet, am I wrong?
Very nice work I like that jacket and I like doing my seams on the inside like that on the inside of my clothing too because it’s so neat and professional I will subscribe and ring the bell because I would like to see more of your work.
@masakasama because that will cost more and they'll have to increase the price and that's a bad thing in a competitive market because the customers usually compare prices first instead of quality and they go with the cheapest option

Does it matter bias or not, it was the technique he was teaching. Jealousy is so obvious.
Beautiful finish
Thank you! I am grateful for the help and great teaching! also it is very motivational and inspires to make more effort to get a beautiful finish!

What a master seamster more video please...
Thank you for your help. It's impressive how you sew nonchalantly. But you make it seems as if it was easy to sew a straight line along an edge or parallel stitch when that only comes from experience. A beginner may need to change feet, am I wrong?
Would it make a difference if you sew the binding down on the main fabric instead of the bias binding?
He got all those done in 6 minutes where can I get more of his videos????? And it's so easy to recollect 💟💟
Wow😍, I'm amazed by the content, thank you so much for sharing your experience 🙏🌹

What an excellent teacher!
Love it can't wait to use the flat braid. In a jacket
How to make the flat braid?
This is just a bound seam finish. Taught this when I was at school, along side many other seams that don’t seem to be used today.
Really enjoy your awesome video. I was wondering what machine are you using in this video?
Thanks
Fabulous tutorial! Thank you so much, Mr Collins :)

Saludo fraterno desde Colombia.
You have some serious skills!
Ron is amazing, glad this helped!
very nicely done video. great lesson!
Thank you for sharing those beautiful tips on sewing finishes. Can that braid be used on the outside of a garment?
january 2020 and watching this. learning something new
I love your jacket... it looks posh
thank you so much for this video - lots of info and very well done - can only hope for another video showing more tricks and tips
It's not the cost of materials that adds up so much, it's the cost of the hours of labor to sew it.
Yup, Chinese villagers with tiny fingers labor is quite pricey.
@masakasama because that will cost more and they'll have to increase the price and that's a bad thing in a competitive market because the customers usually compare prices first instead of quality and they go with the cheapest option
Great explanation of a Hong Kong seam! Thank you
Cheers
Very nice! I added two new seaming techniques to my repertoire.
Excellent video
Thank you so much! Wonderful information - great presentation, I would love to purchase the trim you used for the inside of the jacket.
Thanks. I learned a few new techniques.
