    Capacitors are the Achilles heels of electronics. Interesting VCR!

    Bringing back old memories. I still remember watching my dad fine tune the tracking knobs on his high end VCR back in the day. It was an epic piece of home entertainment. It was a big thing when auto tracking 4 head stereo came out. I wanted one so bad.

    thank you for your quick response. I watch you video everyday , it's not my line of work but I fix 6 DAT decks so far from you video . I collect them because I love the Nostalgia in the 80's and that time I can't afford 'em - I'm still working with DAT walkman D8 with no success yet . More power to you and your Channel.

    No complaints here fella, not had much time to notice if there were more or less videos from you this last 6 or 8 months or so... Even if I was sat here every day waiting for an upload, still no complaints as it's not like we're forcibly paying for the content. It's always a good learning experience watching one or two of your vids. Cheers, as always, from the "democratic" republic of "United" "Kingdom"

    The choice of capacitors by the previous repairer were silly, i only go up one voltage range if i can't find the original voltage.
    Even though your e.s.r meter has payed for itself many times over, it would be a real shame to damage it.
    I think the original design was created by bob parker, very good but not cheap :-(
    The micro controller code would be next to impossible to get if the controller died.

    11:26 Thank you so much for this info. I always wanted to know is any cons when I'm using higher voltage rate capacitors in replace of original lower ones. Because a lot of people were assure me, that there is no difference. Now I know that E.S.R will increase, so it is bad for sensitive electronic/logic boards.
    Greetings from Poland :-)

      The higher the voltage ratiion the higher the ESR. This is usually not an issue except the cap may not last as long. We did it all the time at the shop because the boss was such a cheap son of a bitch that he would only order the higher voltage values so they could be used for everything. His favorite quote was "They will last long beyond our warranty and when they fail again we can chare to replace it again" Being a commission paid tech that was music to my ears.

    • @Radek__
      @Radek__ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@12voltvids that was good story :-) The son of the bitch you're saying? haha :-)
      OK then, on the power supplies boards the higher voltage and esr caps are not big deal. But on the logic board? Or PC motherboard or PC monitors logic? Usually there are special low esr caps because the chips are voltage-changing sensitive and higher internal cap resistance can cause issues. Maybe here I will use your advice to not use higher voltage rated caps.

    I’ve got one for you. I have one of these units on my bench right now. Beautiful unit, plays perfect. Except, when I press the REW button it fast forwards. Seems there’s something on the board that’s not switching the direction of the main drive motor. When the tape gets to the end there’s no way to rewind. And when I eject the tape it ‘eats’ the tape because again the main drive motor wont reverse and take up the slack on the supply side. Any thoughts?

    Hi there , I have a sony 87 ES DAT DECk I got it off ebay its looks pretty good if not the Head Drum not spinning , it could work like new. its trying to rotate but it hesitate. I tried to rotate by hand and I was able to undone it about 60% . it still not spinning freely . when I load the tape there is hesitancy on the head Drum . please help. is there a way to lube it?/ thanks

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They spin at 2000 rpm and if there is anything binding it will either shut down or there will be so much jitter that you can't retrieve data on the tape. I have not had much success with lubricating sticking drum bearings. They all end up failing again shortly after.

    You said capacitors pass ac not dc, how do sound signals pass through caps? Does the voltage just have to be fluctuating?

    • @dlarge6502
      @dlarge6502 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be the definition of AC. Sound is AC

    • @reacey
      @reacey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dlarge6502 it alternates but not between positive and negative like actual ac that you get from the mains? I though a sound signal was just a fluctuating voltage, but with the polarity not changing 50 times a second

      @@andy_rulz2000 But why are they so expensive? Just because they're multisystem? I live in South America and have never seen a vcr that cannot play both NTSC and PAL tapes, like, even the cheapest ones have that feature. But I guess it's different for the US.

    • @andy_rulz2000
      @andy_rulz2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@enzoperruccio I think it's because they also can be used as a Standards Converter, for example if you wanted to convert a NTSC tape to PAL etc and the fact that they are full Multisystem and not just playback of NTSC and PAL tapes like the cheaper VCRs were

    • @enzoperruccio
      @enzoperruccio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andy_rulz2000 I don't get it. All VCRs I've seen here could play and record in both systems. If you're talking about conversion units that would actually convert between signals instead of just outputting/recording whatever they got then yes, I get why they might be a tad more expensive. But still, they're pointless nowadays since modern TVs, dvd recorders and capture cards can accept pretty much any signal (then again that's my own experience, I don't know how it is in the US).
